[Q] confused about locked and hardware locked - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I am still new to this phone and I am trying to read as much as possible. but there is a lot of terminology to absorb. And I definitely want to make sure my phone is OK before the 14-day period when I can exchange it..
So, I unlocked my phone using one of the posted methods on here. i tried it with an AT&T sim card and it works.
Now, I read that there is something like a "hardware lock" which is bad .. because.. I wont be able to root or put rom or update my phone? I tried to go to a recovery mode, but could not, is my phone hardware locked?
Thanks in advance!

Did you do the correct way to recovery?
-Phone off, both volume keys held down
-Hit and hold power button while holding down volume keys
-The word vibrant will come on, and then it will go black again and reboot (still holding down all three buttons)
-When you see the word vibrant THE SECOND TIME let go of the power button but keep the volume keys down until you boot into recovery.
If not, most likely you are hardware locked. I don't have this problem but I think there's threads around for hardware locked users for workarounds and such.

yeah, i did exactly that:
1) power phone off
2) hold both volume buttons
3) hold power button
4) vibrant comes on, wait, vibrant comes on 2nd time
5) release power button, still holding both volume buttons
6) Vibrant starts in a normal way, i do not see anything different, so I assume i am in a regular mode, not recovery mode

Make sure your Vibrant is hardware locked.
If you suspect that it is, you can read this thread HERE.
That will help you get your hardware locked phone working.
Unless you want to go get a new one.

I tied the following ways to test if my phone is hardware locked
1) vol up+ down + power
2) volu up + power
3) vol down + power
Nothing worked How would my phone would be hardware locked? I have not rooted, installed roms, nor apps.. Everything is stock, except that I unlocked the phone. that's all..
And it will be a huge pain to ship the phone back + wait for a new one, which there is no guarantee it wont be hardware locked ..?

Would I be able to install any rom if I am hardware locked? It seems like bionix mod is pretty popular..

Hardware lock is simply a boot loader issue. The phone has software the runs when you turn it out which in turn boots up the operating system. In hardware locked phones, the boot loader is not looking for the key combo to access recovery or download mode. If you go to the link provided, it tells you how to flash your phone to update the boot loader so that it is no longer hardware locked.

[Q] Is it possible my vibrant just doesnt have manual recovery???

Im about to give up. I can get recovery thru adb, quick boot app, rom manager, etc. I still have yet to boot recovery manually. I want to be ready for cm6, which means I need a manual recovery method in case my vibrant freezes up or bootloops so I can restore backup. I've tried every vol-up vol-down combo I could find. Still, after 2 weeks, no manual recovery. I don't want to go back to the unrooted life, but without a manual recovery method, I dont want to chance freezing up. Is there any other method of getting to recovery if the phone freezes up after flashing a rom?
I don't see how that's even possible... Just to make sure you are:
1. Turning off the phone
2. Holding the two volume buttons down
3. Then pressing the power button along with the volume buttons until the "vibrant" logo comes up, goes away and comes back and then letting go of all buttons...
It's pretty easy to do it... But if you did that and you are still getting nothing I suggest you do a factory reset and try again...
If not, try and take it in to a T-Mobile store... This is a function all stock phones should have, and if you can't go into it, that's a defect.
I hold my phone horizontal when powered off.
Both thumbs on the volume rocker.
Press and hold power and volume buttons.
When the Vibrant logo comes up, release power, keep holding the volume rocker.
I've never had an issue. It does seem like a lot of new posts popping up with this issue though. I use Quick Boot now that I am rooted. I also use Clockwork Recovery too.
There's definately a problem with some phones. I had one that wouldn't boot to recovery or download using the buttons. I took it in and swapped it out, and when I tried the new phone in the store I got it first try. It's just not that tricky to do.
Well, after another whole day of research and attempts, I give up. Sending the phone back and tmobile is shipping me another. Only problem is I cant try it out for recovery first. Hope this one works out.

[Q] Worthless Vibrant

Well, after spending almost 11 hours trying to boot into recovery or download, I know for sure that there is something going on with my phone re: hardware locked. The date on my box is 7-16. It is an early Vibrant. But no matter what I do, I cannot get into download or recovery which means my ****ing phone is literally worthless.
I have tried all possible thousands of combination's of buttons, batteries, and cords while booting and nothing happens.
The Vibrant logo shows, then it shows the pink, annoying as hell T-mobile logo, than goes to the Galaxy S logo which loads for a little bit and then just leads me to a black screen. Eventually the 4 buttons on the front of the phone turn on and then nothing else happens. It will just sit like this forever.
I know all I need to do is get a working ROM loaded but it is literally impossible to do so.
Can anyone offer any suggestions? Or are anyone else having the same problem?
I guess the only way I can get a working phone is to get in touch with T-mobile and do a Warranty exchange. That's a damn shame too, because I will be without a working phone for a week.
What about using adb?
adb reboot recovery -or- adb reboot download ?
I had a hw locked vibrant, never tried the adb reboot download, recovery did work.. I added another line on my account last night for somone, who got a vibrant, theirs wasn't hw locked, so I traded 'em ;P
Agree with the above poster I have been stuck on the vibrant screen or dark screen and adb still worked to save me
when i try to use adb, it just tells me that it cant find the device. i'm not able to boot into android OS at all.... screen just hangs. so my computer is never getting a chance to see my phone hence why i cant use adb to reboot it into recovery or download.
I believe your device has to go into recovery mode then check with and devices and if you see a device I THINK it is and reboot download, I am 90% certain

i do believe i have the correct drivers installed. i was able to use adb to run lagfixes before i was having this problem. when i boot my phone, i get a sound from my computer saying that it recognizes a usb device. the two drives in the vibrant show up in My Computer but i cannot access them as windows says they are not accessable at the moment.
at what point will adb be able to recognize my phone when booting? no matter what i do when i try adb shell i get error: device not found
It could be the phone not bring in debugging mode, either because it's been turned off or the os isn't getting far enough to turn it on. I think I've been able to get adb to recognize my phone even while it was booting up (at the white vibrant screen). Maybe you can try adb then?
Same problem here. I probably just have to sell it fast on ebay or something. Hopefully some kind of fix starts by the end of the week. First phone in my smartphone life to brick from a simple Voodoo lag fix. Please XDA gods find a solution.

nope, no go. adb will not recognize my device no matter what. and the device isnt loading the OS so i cannot turn debugging on. i guess this is a real "brick" then.

this isnt working either. :-(
I just fixed this on my phone. Your phone will go into download mode. Plug the phone in and wait for the battery symbol to fully load. Hold Vol + and _ and PWR until it goes black, then release the PWR button only. It will go into DL mode. Fire up Odin, and flash the "Froyo that does not brick" ROM. It will boot into the i9000 recovery mode and give you an error. Hold the Vol + and - and PWR again and release PWR when the phone goes black. It will go into DL mode again. Now with Odin, flash the factory firmware, making sure to click re-partition this time. After the phone reboots, it will fire right up into the factory ROM.

this is exactly the method i want to try. but unfortunately i cannot get the phone into recovery or download mode. i have tried at least 100 times now with many different combination's of plugging the usb cord in and pressing the volume and power buttons.
two ideas: one, is it possible that i wiped recovery and download mode from my phone on accident? the reason why i ask is that i was super tired and flashing roms and kernels to my phone. i flashed back to my original stock rom and then i flashed the kernel. for some reason, i selected wipe date/cache in Rom Manager before flashing the kernel. i have no idea why i did this. seriously. totally noob move. so im assuming i have a kernel flashed but now there is no ROM installed for the phone to boot into.
two, if above is not the issue, than im going to assume that the phone is not recognizing any button presses while its off, so when i turn it on it just recognizes that the power was pressed and ignores the volume presses, thus not booting the phone into recovery or download.
edit: i should mention again that at no time does adb recognize my device. so i cannot use adb to reboot the phone into the mode i need.
just a comment for the OP - the vibrant isnt worthless, it is something that YOU did to get the phone into its current state. So dont blame the phone for something that it didnt do on its own.

I understand what you mean. I appreciate your criticism of my original post. Let me say that I wrote it while frustrated. But I know that isn't an excuse.
The device is fantastic. I know that I did this to it myself. It's unfortunate.
Anyways, I received a replacement phone. I will be more careful this time.

HELP! bricked my vibrant

i just flashed simply honey 3.8 via odin, i did back to stock before via odin (came from cm7) but after flashed simply honey, my phone stucked at rainbow screen sayin partition partition stupid partition, so i read that to get rid that rainbow i should flash gb bootloader, then i flashed the bootloader via odin, yeah the rainbow has gone but my phone keeps bootloping in vibrant and bullet screen then sayin partition2 bla bla, i can't get to odin with 2 button combo, it's just go to charging wtf, i can't even get to cwm via 3 buttons combo, help me guys, thx in advance
Have you tried
1. Start Odin
2. Plug USB cable into pc
3. Power off the Phone.
3. Pull the Battery.
5. Plug USB cable into Phone.
6. Press and Hold: Volume UP + Volume DOWN + Power, all at the same time.
7. Re-insert the battery.
8. The phone will power now, when the screen starts a cycle of going to a BLACK screen, release ONLY the POWER button.
9. When you see the download icon release the volume buttons,
10. Odin back to stock by putting the PIT file into the appropriate area and the .tar in the PDA area.
Just checking, did you take out your battery, unplugged the usb, put the battery back in, then held vol up, vol down, and power and released all three as soon as you saw the Vibrant logo?
and if that doesnt work try all the steps above but minus one step! hold down both volume buttons except power and see if that works!

It's not bricked, I know you're mad and frustrated, trust me, I've been there a million times!
Lets try taking out the battery and leave it out for 15 minutes. Reboot your computer and unplug every usb.
Then try the above steps again.

tried it, still my phone can't see the download mode screen, i can't bring it to t-mobile since i don't live in states
If you flashed the bootloaders then the mapping is different. Try power button and volume up without the usb plugged and with the battery in. That should get you in download mode.

You are not bricked. I just had the same thing happen flashing the light version with Rom Manager. Since you flashed the Bootloaders, the key combination has changed. Hold down the volume up and power key. Release when you see the vibrant logo-that should take you into red recovery. When there, go to voodoo, choose disable. It will tell you it is 'actually enable' and will be disabled next boot. So reboot and let it do its thing. When I did it the Android in space finally showed up.
EDIT: I'm pretty sure you don't need to go into download mode to reflash with odin, just disable the lagfix. If it doesn't boot into the Android, then volume down+power will take you into download and reflash after the lagfix is finished disabling.
EDIT 2: And with the Gingerbread bootloader, you can't go into download mode if plugged in anymore. It will not go past the charger like on the Froyo Bootloaders.
EDIT 3: Sorry got the key mapping backwards, lol here it is straight from the Bootloaders site.
Gingerbread Bootloaders - No Rainbow - Fully visible Recovery on all ROMs
Benefits - No more rainbows on Gingerbread 2.3 ROMs like Simply Honey GB, LiDroid, Asgard, etc.
Convenient Key Maps for entering Recovery and Download Modes. (I personally like these mappings over the Standard Vibrant Mapping as you can enter download mode directly without needing to turn off phone or remove battery etc...)
For Recovery - Lower Volume Key + Power Button
For Download - Upper Volume Key + Power Button

I'm impressed with your risk taking capabilities man... Dont know how old you are to Android, and I'm not commenting on that, but from what I see, you are just 15 posts old, and you managed to flash Bootloaders to your phone...
Do read the OP for possible solutions before you flash anything... That said, till you have a screen, its not a brick.
Flash the bootloaders, using the new key mapping, and then flash the ROM, you should be good to go !!!
maybe one of you guys can help me here
i have the rainbow screen and i cannot get computer to recognize phone. i have to get into download mode with a dongle and odin still does not recognize my phone. i cannot boot into recover as the screen is completely rainbowed out and I cannot see what I am doing.
Are there any suggestions on what to do from here?
Thank you

SAMSUNG S6 stuck on startup, cant turn off.

Got a samsung s6 phone stuck on the startup logo, cant turn it off.
The only way i can interact with it is; volume down + power off that makes it just restart to the stuck logo.
Volume down + power button + home button - takes me to where i can download a custom firmware.
Thats pretty much it, cant do the volume up + power button for firmware reset or simply turn it off....
Haalp, tried to custome update it with a firmware to the phones version, still stuck on the startup logo..

This should make you boot into recovery and be able to factory reset your phone.

Ok, here's another 2 options you can do.
1-hold the power button only and see if that shuts it down.
2-leave it like that till the battery discharged completely, then charge it for a few minutes then try booting into recovery using the volume up with power and home buttons.

Tried the volume up + home + power... No respons at all.
The only thing i can get to work is volume down + home + power - takes me to a custome download software menu with the option to custom download or simply cancel/restart device.
Or volume down + power, for a simple restart that takes me back to the frozen samsung logo screen.
I tried to download a custom software compatible with the phones model in odin software and kias... Same result, back to frozen samsung screen.

Your only solution is to reset data, but i don't know how, even if you tried adb but you don't have USB debugging enabled, so adb won't work, you're in some deep problem, try giving it to some service center he might have a software tool that can simply wipe data without troubles.
Some users say that holding the power button for 15 seconds should shut it down which didn't work for you either, so your only solution is to give it to a service center, it should cost you nothing, it's just a reset data....i guess.
This is a old phone, and its userdamage not softwarefail. Dont think the support will take that in for "fix".
Also not my phone, so i could not deliver it for service. Got it cause the owner wanted to trash it, but i could have it if i got it to work.
Found a software for my country, some version below 5.1.1 and 1 software over. But now i get fail in odin. Why do that happen?
The new error message i get when i download firmware thats for my country: [CM] SW REV. CHECK FAIL. DEVICE:5, BINARY:4

You're trying to downgrade to an older bootloader which isn't recommended and will cause problems.
What do you mean by it's user damage, did you trip knox?
Or did you try to flash a custom recovery? Or you tried to root?
If no, and you got bootloop while the phone was upgrading, then it's not your fault, and it's a software damage.
If yes, then you should fix it anyway because if you didn't then it will be useless and the s6 isn't old like you said, it's still new, if you have an s2 like mine then you can call that old :silly:

By userdamaged, i mean... Ehm, the owner probably downloaded some custome software or tried some kind of "jailbreak" i guess. I rlly dont know.
Just as i read online, this seems to be a hard brick of some kind... If i cant fix this on my own, its prolly going in the trash. Since i got it for free cause the owner wanted to trash it as he could not fix it.

Hard brick means it's a hardware issue, so if you believe it's a hardware issue then there is nothing you can do, what i meant was you should "Ask" how much would repairing it will cost, if it's just a software problem then it should cost a little, and you will be the winner at the end because you got the phone for free and you made it work....and it's an s6 phone...Something i dream of LOL, and if it's a hardware issue and will cost you a fortune then throw it in the trash or sell it as a spare parts phone or something.
Sad news then Ill try to find out if its worth it.
I have pretty much tried everything i can at home. Anyways, thanks alot for the help

Stuck on Logo? Can't shut off?

Noticed quite a few threads re this, have had the prob myself.
Found a simple fix, while trying different things...
Hold ALL buttons down at once (vol dn + vol up + pwr button). Keep them held down for about a min or two. Phone will respond and you'll be able to shut it off. It takes a while to respond.
Cheers
Thank you!
I've added this to the US998 Pie KDZ thread. That KDZ is very wonky. It's the only Pie people have problems flashing. Probably because LG has not yet released Open Market US998 and the one we are using is technically for U.S. Cellular US998.
I had no trouble flashing it myself -- on my backup V30+(former LS998) going straight from Nougat (never updated, it was my backup phone) to Pie through Dev Patched LGUP Refurbish mode. But lots of other people seem to have problems.
On my daily phone, I'm still on rooted stock Oreo with Magisk and Xposed mods.

Found a simple fix, while trying different things...
Hold ALL buttons down at once (vol dn + vol up + pwr button). Keep them held down for about a min or two. Phone will respond and you'll be able to shut it off. It takes a while to respond.
Cheers

Hi, @AsItLies, I have tried but my phone still keeps bootloop, so could you please describe it more detailed? Can you enter fastboot or rec then? If possible, please come to see this: Help! bootloop per 5 sec, cannot enter rec, download or fastboot

I think it's pretty clear, what I did and it worked in my situation(s):
There are 3 buttons right? Vol up, Vol dwn, and pwr.
Press all 3, at the same time, keep them pressed until the phone responds. It can take quite a while.
The last time I used this was after flashing LOS17, but then flashed a 19.x version of Magisk... (that's the wrong version of Magisk for Q Roms btw), resulting in phone stuck on boot logo, wouldn't budge.
I honestly have never tested exactly 'how long' it takes to respond, just that it does eventually respond and are then able to get to recovery etc. I can say time wise, if you hold them down and no response after a few minutes, then it's probably not going to work in your situation.
good luck

Oh, I'm just a little confused if you are talking about powering off/shutting down the phone entirely or instead changing the status of logo sticking and then shutting off with extra operation. My phone was suffering automatic reboot per 5 second, so I cannot recognize any other response than that. Thanks for your patience, but I just want to know something more to see if this method works when the phone is almost bricked. It seems you could enter rec or at least download mode, so maybe you had performed force reboot.
Hope further confirmation.

Hmmm I think you may be over thinking this a bit. All that happens (for me) is the phone responds (it gets out of the loop). Then, do whatever you want (shut down, recovery, etc etc).
I wouldn't suggest trying to reboot system again, as you already know that won't work...
All I can say is, if you tried the above and held the buttons, and nothing happened, then I don't know what else you can do. Sorry. Hopefully you can find a way.
Just in case someone is having problems entering download mode while in this bootloop, I'll explain how I applied AsltLies method:
First I held all buttons at the same time, no matter how many times the phone restarted, I still held them
After a while, a white screen with the MEID or IMEI info showed up, this is when the phone stopped bootlooping and I released the buttons.
Then, I CONNECTED the phone to the pc, after that I held VOL UP+POWER BUTTON, this would make the screen go black eventually, and when that happened, I inmediately released the power button but not the VOL UP button, and the phone entered into fully working download mode.
I hope this helps someone.
