Here is a great script that is apparently making its way through the android world. It increases the SD card read/write by reading in larger chunks. You can get it to work on Fascinate somehow.
Many of us in the Eris world have gotten this to work and my now SLOW eris reads pictures and related SD functions twice as fast as my fascinate!! Now to start testing this on my ever godly fascinate...
sharing the wealth:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013554
This can technically be hard coded into ROMS, but im no ROM developer (hint hint)
----update-----
I didn't find anyone in the Fascinate world doing this, but apparently the Epic has this somewhat working:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1021647
----update----
And here are the Epic versions flashable files... i'll test them later today to see if they work on the fascinate:

Sounds great. I was just complaining about my pictures loading slowly yesterday, and here you are to save the day!
I'm backing up my phone now, and will flash the 2k file.
I did test this app, which essentially does the same thing, and it does work great on the fascinate. But, its an app that has to be turned on, and wont stick at boot. Although the app does have a set at boot option... thats still one more app running at boot.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/sd-increase/com.sdincrease.it
I'll post results on my flashing of the scripts shortly.
ok I can confirm the following did stick at boot.
njoy everyone:
SDCardSpeedFix2048KB.zip
I tried that app, and I'm not sure that it even worked. You probably know more than I do, but after doing the setting in SD Speed Increase i can open the file and it still says 128. i also tried it on my eris and it did change the file to 2048. Weird. Is there gonna be a link to a flashable in your post. thanx...

check my last link in the OP. All the various flashable files are in that link. I used 2k version. Thats what I used in my Eris.
the app you have to use the slider to adjust the amount (again use 2048) click on that RED/ORANGE button with the arrow and it will set it.
what it says in "Status" is what is defined in your phone. So thats how you can confirm it worked. Or just open up the gallery and compare a large folder before the flash(or app change), and then run the same gallery folder after the flash (or app change). It should be MUCH faster.
Ok, now the 2048k from that link worked great.
But just for the record, I did push that button to finalize the setting in SD Speed Increase . I don't know why it didn't change the file...oh well, thanks a lot sir!

jt1134 implemented this about a week ago, and I and several others did the same with the custom kernels that were released. If it's being set in the initramfs and not via an init.d script, you can change the values all you want and it likely isn't doing anything to change the read/write performance.

From what I can tell the flash files are writing to the init.d. So it should be sticking. This is still good to know as some people might not be using custom kernels, or might want to change from whatever defaults the kernel devs have pre-set.

If the change is applied in the initramfs, that will likely take precedence over the init.d script, but I have no idea how it works if there are two things telling it what to run at.
I'm not sure why but whenever I flash a GB ROM the widgets in overview mode jump around too much/too fast to the point where I can't even accurately choose which one I want to go to. It's smooth at first after a fresh boot/reboot but as time goes on my overview mode always starts to act crazy no matter which ROM I flash (I've been going back n forth between EWJET and WB and it happens with both of them). Is it possible to get the stock overview mode from GB with the widgets that are static and don't move round like in these custom versions? Any help would be appreciated, this is the only feature I am starting to not like.
I suspect this has to do with the fps unlock. I noticed it worked OK without it.

I didn't even think of that! That does sound like it could be a valid reason. Thanks!
Hey speig, do you know if there's a way to remove the uncap/restore the 30 or 32 (whichever it is) cap? I searched and found a solution in a thread that says to delete some line from a file in root explorer but it's not letting me edit the file, just view it even though I enable all permissions. Thanks in advance if you're able to help!
Scratch that...I was able to use ES file explorer/manager to restore the cap
Overclock too high and phone crashes? Accidentally hit set on boot and you can't get in to change the frequencies?
Throw it in the freezer for half an hour and try again, worked for me. I was set above 1.9ghz and I thought I was sol and needed to restore (haven't made any backups in a while). Figured I'd give it a shot to keep the CPU/gpu cool, and it booted. I switched the frequency down than and all is well.
I kinda wonder what quadrant scores I would have gotten cooled.

In addition, if you don't want to wipe ALL data settings and apps on the device, wipe the specific data settings for that application.
All apk data settings are stored in /data/data/<package name>. The package name formats follows as something similar to com.joeykrim.flashimagegui , or something of that sort depending on the author of the application.
Hope that helps!
Also if you use SetCPU:
There is
a "safe mode" function that prevents SetCPU from running any tasks during boot if a file called "setcpu_safemode" exists in /sdcard or /data/local. This is useful if unstable settings were saved with "set on boot" checked.

or if you dont want to wipe data you can flash a kernel that doesn't offer oc abilities and then boot your phone back up lower your clock then reflash your old kernel, happened to me before just boot into bootloader goto fastboot hook to pc use command to enter recovery and flash the none over clockable kernel if your using hboot 1.5
This flash contains an xml permissions file and the Tag.apk from the Canadian ROMs.
Once you've flashed this you will have the option to turn on NFC in Wireless Settings as well as be able to install NFC apps from the Play Market.
Obligatory Directions:
Reboot your phone into Recovery if you've already installed ClockworkMod Recovery. If you don't know if you have, you probably haven't. Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526431
Make a Backup! This doesn't do anything fancy, but I'm not responsible if you lose everything when flashing. CWM is still technically a Beta build for this phone
Choose "install zip from sdcard"
Choose either "choose zip from sdcard" or "choose zip from internal sdcard" depending on where you saved it.
Find your file and install it
Restart. You now have NFC options.
nfc?
do our phones actually have nfc
Yup, it's just disabled on the AT&T for some reason. If you take off your battery cover and look at it, the chip is built into the cover itself.
I tested transmission and receiving with a friend's Nexus. It works great.
So what can this be used for.

http://www.nfcworld.com/2011/03/30/36757/nfc-task-launcher-android-tag-application/
TLDR: Potential Uses - secure payment, data transfer, product information, location check in, task launching with personalized tags (which the phone can write to), and lots of other stuff. There is even a company developing house door locks using NFC and newer cars with push button start already use it to detect if the keys are near the car.
Will this work with google wallet?
Not yet. Google Wallet is a Nexus only app right now.
Edit: The app can be downloaded, but it does a check to see what the phone is. I'm just going to leave it installed so I can know when it updates.
Think this will cause us problems when nfc is legitimately released? And has anyone attempted a device change through build.prop?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
As in changing the phone name in the build.prop to a nexus? I'm not really sure what that would do. I'll look up the model number and report back what happens when I change it.
As for flashing this, I doubt it will cause any more problems than the root kernel and bloat removal will. Unless AT&T has some spyware buried into the phone, they shouldn't know, nor should they care.
This flash literally just tosses in the permissions XML and adds the control program from the other phones to the system apps. EVERYTHING else was already in the ROM, including the Nfc.apk and libraries. Kinda annoying, but AT&T is wanting it locked out on phones until they're proprietary NFC payment system is released.
Personally, I wanted to play with launch tags, so I figured out how to unlock it, and then made a CWM flashable that does all the heavy lifting I figured out by tearing through the Rodgers and Telus ROMs.
just installed through CWM and works perfectly. are there any apps currently out there similar to "Google Wallet" that I can use in order to pay wireless? And the NFC tags are pretty cool, i will experiment with that as well.
I know the Paypal app allows for direct phone to phone interactions using it, but I haven't tested how it works. I just got it working this morning, so I haven't done anything other than build the zip for everyone else.
Ok, so editing the build.prop to say it's a Nexus S 4G didn't work. Wallet started force closing in the background. I'll put it on my list of things to research.
I got my NFC tags from Amazon today. Using NFC Task Launcher it can trigger Tasker tasks. Pretty cool. Already got one set for putting my phone in "sleepy time mode" when I place it on my night stand. Next up is to route the audio streaming via Bluetooth to speakers in the bedroom. Will be nice for playing music in the shower.
Sent magically through the air from the mighty Note!
What tags did you buy? I'm wanting to do the same now that I have it working.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
See earlier posts. They are the mifare Ultralight ones. Really limited capacity. If you try to initiate a complex tasker task directly you won't have enough room. A work around when using tasker is to create the complex task, call it task 1. Then create another task that runs task 1. So it might be better to get the larger capacity ones. They're rewritable although you can "lock" them to make 'em read only.
You can leave NFC on all the time so you just tap your tag. Hopefully that doesn't kill the battery. But I created a simple tasker widget to easily turn it on and off when I want without having to go into settings.

Ok, I know the instructions posted are pretty cut and dry, Im wondering whether NFC can be enabled on stock & unrooted?
Im going to be making a few assumptions here, feel free to correct anything, I just purchased this phone 4 days ago and have not yet done anything 'hacky' yet, just been reading.
Im pretty sure the stock recovery (which I have not yet tried to boot into) is the 3e recovery which prevents unsigned code from being flashed (3e on the Cappy did the same thing). This would prevent just renaming this to update.zip and flashing yes?
And, 'if' you were rooted, would this affect the flash counter thing everyone has been talking about? I only ask because, coming from a Cappy, I never had to deal with this flash counter nonsense so Im a bit unsure what causes this counter to increase...

Will this work on SAUROM?
I've got the latest SAUROM and the ATT fix. Would this work on that? Is there any downside to giving it a try?
This may end up in the SHOstock2 thread but for now, since it is in very early development, I will keep it here.
Newbies: You may want to read the following posts for more information before you begin this process:
ATTENTION: AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II General Guide/Walkthrough/FAQ/hints and tips
Install Guide:
Note: If you already rooted your phone and installed (a kernel with) CWM then please do a nandroid backup before moving on. Read more about this here if you are unfamiliar.
Method 1:
If you are on an AT&T stock rom (UCKH7/KK6) first you will have to root your phone. Read through this thread to do so. Once your stock rom is rooted you will need ClockworkMod Recovery. One way to do this (without getting the dreaded yellow triangle when the phone turns on) is via Mobile ODIN. See this thread for more ideas. You can get the free lite version here or the Pro version here. You can also use Super Manager to do this. Using either of these tools you can install the latest CherryPicker kernel. After that you can reboot into recovery mode and flash this rom. Note: You should check the MD5 sum of the .zip file on your computer and your phone before flashing it. You can find the expected MD5 sum just below the download link.
Once you flash SHOstock2 you can uninstall Mobile ODIN as you probably will not use it again.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What kernel comes with this rom? And why?
As of 2.0 it comes with CherryPicker (by drowningchild). See post #3 for more details.
"Quality of entropy and the personal touch. But and tested for my ROM by himself. We don't like ex tweaks implementation of that and would rather use voltage control or set CPU." -shoman94
I used Titanium Backup to backup all my apps. Should I restore System apps and data?
No. In order to avoid causing any number of issues you should not restore system apps or data. User apps and data should be fine though.
I just flashed the latest SHOstock2 or my kernel of choice. Battery life seems bad. What should I do?
You should really wait a couple of days before you can gauge battery usage.
Okay, a couple of days have passed and I suspect something is using too much battery. Now what should I do?
A good idea is to use BetterBatteryStats to find out what is going on.
I cannot get the default messaging app to launch from the icon on the home screen or in the app drawer. What is wrong?
This happens sometimes after the initial install. Just delete and re-add the shortcuts and they should work just fine.
I use SMS Popup and I am having some weird issues with it. Is it compatible with this rom?
SMS Popup will work just fine if you keep 'Quick Reply' unchecked.
How can I get the weather on my lock screen?
First, you have to enable the Circle (and not AOSP) lockscreen. Go to Settings -> Display and uncheck 'Enable AOSP lockscreen. In the same place you should check 'Weather'.
How do I take a screenshot?
Hold Power + Volume Down for a second or so.
How do I disable the lower power alert sound?
Using a third-party file explorer (such as ES File Explorer), or via adb, delete or rename /system/media/audio/ui/TW_Low_Battery.ogg.
How do I disable the camera shutter sound (when taking a picture)?
Using a third-party file explorer (such as ES File Explorer), or via adb, delete or rename /system/media/audio/ui/Shutter_01.ogg.
I saw this rom has call recording. Is there an app to listen to those?
Yes, though you do not *need* one. Check this app out.
Apex Launcher is notifying me of an update. How do I stop this?
First of all, you can install the update. If you do not want to then go to the Apex settings and find About Apex Launcher. Click 'Automatically Check for Updates' and select 'Never'.
Can I use the TouchWiz launcher with this rom?
Thanks to LiLChris06 you can give this one a try.
Where did this app switcher come from?
It was ported from HTC Sense 4.
Does Swype work with this rom?
Yes, just install the Swype Installer.
I would like to use the Samsung keyboard. Where can I get a compatible one?
Thanks to LiLChris06 you can grab it here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20447007/Update/apps/SamsungKB.zip
Do you have any tips for increasing battery life?
Yes. Remove apps (such as Twitter, Facebook, etc) and use their mobile web sites instead.
Is there a way to turn off the wifi when the screen is off?
Sure. Go to Settings -> Wifi -> menu button -> Advanced. Set Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep to whatever you prefer.
I do not like the default messaging app. Are there any good third-party apps?
Definitely. Check out GO SMS Pro, Handcent SMS, chompSMS for example. Make sure you grab the latest version (with ICS support).
I do not like the order of the toggles. Can I rearrange them?
Yes. Go to Applications -> QuickPanel Settings
Does this rom support BLN?
Yes, though it is disabled by default. Grab BLN control - Free or BLN Control - Pro from the Google Play Store to enable BLN. Once you enable BLN you will have to enable this option in whatever apps you want.
I do not like the CRT animation when the screen turns off. Can I get rid of it?
If you want the screen to turn off right away go to Settings -> Developer options -> Window animation scale and choose 'Animation is off'.
I cannot get Samsung Kies to work with my phone. Is this a known issue?
Samsung Kies is not supported on our phone (only the international version is) and was therefore removed.
I get an error about my charger's voltage. Can you fix that?
It is a problem with your charger, not the rom. This is especially true of car chargers. You will have to try a different charger.
Can I change the CPU governor?
Sure, grab Voltage Control to do this. You can also use SetCPU.
Make sure you read one or both of the following threads for more information:
[REF] Quasar kernel governors and I/O schedulers manual
[REF][TWEAKS] Kernel Governors, Modules, I/O Schedulers, CPU Tweaks, AIO App Configs
Can I use ExTweaks with this rom?
It does not work with the default CherryPicker kernel. If you really want to use it then you can install the Siyah kernel instead and then you can use ExTweaks.
Can I use Google Wallet with this rom?
As of now, no.
Can I use init.d with this rom?
Yes, CherryPicker's supports it. Read over this thread for more information.
When my phone first turns on there is a yellow triangle. How can I get rid of that?
You can use Triangle Away. I have used it a couple of times without any issues but make sure you understand what you are doing before using it. Note: If you used Mobile ODIN as described in the install guide above you should not have the yellow triangle.
My cellular signal does not seem that great. Is there anything I can do?
Head over to the modem thread and grab a couple of older modems to try. Reboot in recovery mode to flash one.
Can I use ROM Manager with this rom for backups?
No, boot into Recovery Mode and do it from there.
What is fast dormancy, how can I toggle that setting, and should I bother?
It is recommended that you not change this setting but it seems there is a lack of clarity on whether AT&T uses it for our phones. If you really want to, first you should read more about it. This thread is a good starting place. To change the setting dial *#9900#
What kernels are compatible with this rom?
Here are three: Entropy’s - N.E.A.K. - Siyah (get WITH mic swap version)
If I want to try a different kernel do I need to clean anything first?
jivy26’s Kernel Cleaning Script can take care of this for you. Flash it before flashing the new kernel.
I would like to do some benchmarking. What do you recommend?
If you really want to do that try AnTuTu Benchmark.
Can I download a previous version of this rom?
You can look here: http://streamingfreebies.com/android_themes/SGS2/ROM/SHOstock2/
I need to return the phone to its stock state. How should I do that?
Sorry to see you go. Read this thread.

Nobody needs to download and use Mobile Odin. Flashing kernels through CWM recovery works fine and is perfectly safe. Using Mobile Odin as a special case recovery tool for flashing over a buggy/ dangerous kernel is another story, but strictly speaking, people shouldn't be led down a road that isn't totally necessary.
Wifi won't disconnect when the screen is off, even with the correct settings, I believe this has been verified by more than a few users. (I could be wrong).
CRT OFF behavior looks like slow crap when disabled, so, for a crisp shut-off, one should/ can, go into Dev Options, under Windows Animations, and select .5 for a value. (CRT Animation needs to be checked)
Last little bit, I would steer clear of saying too much about battery life, or giving advice about how long to let a ROM/Kernel settle in (more of an art than a science). Suffice to direct folks to XDA threads on the subject.
Keep up the good work, initiative is very good!

You're awesome. Regarding M.O., I wanted to ensure that noobs didn't think they HAD to do it that way. In fact, now that I think about it, I'd just assume that people are rooted and good to go, you can even say so, like, "...it's assumed you're rooted, running a kernel with CWM, and capable of either downloading vis wifi to your SD Card, or transfering the rom from your computer...". I mean, they gotta have a pulse.
OKAY AFTER A LONG DAY OF READING AND A HUGE HEAD ACHE, This is what i have come up with PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I AM MISSING ANY STEPS OR ANYTHING... THANK YOU!!!!!
how to root sg2
1. Use Odin to flash stock UCKH7 with Root, available here. Be aware that doing this will require a full wipe, so do what you can to back up your sms/mms/contacts and other data. READ EVERY STEP CAREFULLY. Do not flash a kernel with Odin.
TO USE ODEN, How to root by flashing Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package with Modem using Odin3 One-Click Downloader (Windows)
Download the "Odin3 One-Click Downloader Stock I-777 UCKH7 with Root no BL" package from MultiUpload or MegaUpload. Extract the contents of the zip file to a directory on your hard disk drive. This is a One-Click version of Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package plus stock modem from the development forum. (Contains stock zImage, factoryfs.img with root, and modem.bin.)
Start the Odin3 One-Click Downloader program by double clicking on "I777UCKH7 OCD Root No BL.exe".Now Enter Download Mode:
With the phone powered off, plug in the usb cable while holding the vol up + vol down buttons (but not the power button).
When the warning screen appears, press Volume up to continue into download mode.
In Odin, the small edit box in the upper left corner will turn yellow, and say something like [0:COM8].
Click Start. Watch the progress bar advance in green while the message box in the lower area describes the steps. When the flash is finished, the top left larger edit box will turn green and say PASS! and your phone will automatically reboot.
Unplug the usb cable from you phone after it boots up. Success. You're Rooted.
2. Now that you have root access, download Mobile Odin from the Play Store. Use it to flash either Entropy's DD or Siyah. This will install CWM Recovery. THE APP AND KERNEL,"DD-012.." ARE IN THE FOLDER ON THE DESKTOP.
3. Boot into CWM Recovery and make a nandroid backup.
4. Use CWM to flash SHOStock or CM9. SHOSTOCK IS LOCATED IN FOLDER ON DESKTOP

Correct. You generally only want to use Mobile Odin right after initial root to flash a kernel with CWM.
The only other time I can see it being useful is if you want to flash a stock firmware, but want to retain root. The everroot option works well for this.

Using mobile Odin to put cwm after touting the phone is the best way IMO and eliminates the need for triangle away. Especially when coming from stock kk6.
Crt unchecked is not a crt off animation. The screen does fade some before turning off but that's it. Doing what you state gives it an instant off. I can't believe people would be picky about a split second delay..... Crazy.
Battery after flash..... There is no doubt you need to wait a few charge cycles before studying about battery. There are way to many variables on what effects the battery but bbs can help you work finding the culprit.

Currently ex tweaks is not supported with cherry picker kernel.

Crazy like an aesthete.
Not to get into a pissing contest, but (here he goes) this Q and A is about the ROM, and Kernel, not flashing in general, or rooting.
Love ya Sho, you're a great man (or a half naked tranny in newark). I don't even care, I love this rom!

Which includes flashing my ROM from stock. So yes it pertains to installing/using the ROM.

the wifi does turn off but it doesnt show so in the battery stats
While a guide like this could be helpful, in my opinion trying to answer almost every question a person could think of just makes people not have to search. Which makes them ask dumb questions and start stupid threads. For someone brand new to flashing or coming from bone stock, definitely helpful.

This really isn't a guide. It's a faq for my ROM that has questions that are asked multiple times which become redundant. It's purpose is to lead you in the right direction for installing and using SHOstock.
Really I wanted/want this inserted into the ROM thread.

Yeah, I went back and forth on that and finally installed ExTweaks to test. Once I saw it didn't work I updated the FAQ.

And I have every intention of putting it there. I thought that filling up the (already bloated) thread with discussions about the FAQ was not useful. My hope is that I can get most of the silly Q & A's added within a week.
