Hi. This is the first time I will root and flash a phone. Of course I can't use my phone during the process itself, but what about after I root? I am a busy person and most likely I won't be able to root then flash in the same day.
How long does the root process, and then the flash process, take about? Estimates?
After I root, I can take and receive calls and SMS right away right? No waiting to do other things first? How about after I flash? When I get done flashing, can I start to use my phone again?
I am just nervous that it will take so long and I have to go for a meeting or my boss or student needs to talk to me, etc...
Thanks, LGnationrc
After you root and/or flash ROM. Assuming you did a full wipe, you'll have to set the phone up.
Basically the touch the Android robot and sign in to your Google account.
Phone and SMS should work right after that.

Just remember to backup your contacts or remember to sync it to Google Contacts before you start (go to sync in settings, choose your account and tap "Sync Contacts".
ok thanks guys. I can't find this "thanks" button but I give you guys one each!
I think I will just do a root first, before I get into flashing. Rooting seems easy and fast. I have everything really to go, I just want to read up and get more information before I dive in.
After I am all done, flashing too, I basically want a faster phone (no more lag!) and I want to be able to run skype (I can't with my LG Optimus X2) and I want to remove that stupid and loud shutter sound when i record once and for all. Maybe I can free up some battery life too. I only get about 10 days before she is shut off dead. I only have about 20 apps. Maybe I can remove all the build crap apps too.
When I finally have the time to do it, I will let you guys know how it went. And report any problems I have if any. Thanks, lgnationrc
Just to clarify, the rooting process itself will not change the usability of your phone afterward. Until you choose to flash a custom ROM you can run your device with it's stock ROM as long as you like. In my case, I used a clean rooting method (not a one-click method) and it took 10 minutes to complete. I did spend quite a bit of time reading up on the subject beforehand.

Ok, whats the difference between oneclick method and a "clean" root method? Why a "root" vs. a oneclick method?
That is fine. I just want to get the process started. As long as I can take this in steps and still be able to use the phone in between steps.
What is the percentage of chance that I brick my phone trying to do this?
Thanks, lgnationrc

Both are rooting methods. With some devices there are apps designed to root you at the click of a button. Sometimes this is great and sometimes it can cause problems. With my phone, HTC G2, I used a process that takes a tad bit longer, but I was able to see what was going on each step of the way. My point was simply that rooting doesn't usually take long at all. If you already have a good method in mind stick with it and don't let me confuse you. And all this said - I did use a program called z4root to root my old CLIQ and it worked great. If you do find a one click method just be sure to do your homework on it, and be sure it's not causing more harm than good.
And I can't give you a percentage in terms of bricking your phone. If I were you I would just read instructions, then re read, read the posts by other users... read as much as you can. If you don't understand something, do a Google search. And when you feel comfortable, go ahead and do it. Flashing a custom ROM is simple and really does breathe new life into your phone. Good luck.

Good news. I rooted my LG last night. No problems, went fast. I will wait to flash a few weeks before I feel really comfortable and read as much as I can.
But one problem I have right now is, I can't delete the factory apps. I have Astro file manager and I try to delete facebook but I keep getting "Error deleting" message.
And I am trying to figure out how to remove that stupid shutter sound when I record video. I guess there is a law in Hong Kong (thats where I bought the phone) that before you record there has to be a loud shutter sound. Nothing works. I can't figure it out. Any ideas?
I also haven't backed my phone up yet. I have to get the software still.

You need a root enabled file manager. Try es file explorer from the market. You have to enable it in the settings.

First thing I would do is flash Clockworkmod recovery. This will allow you to create a backup (nandroid) of your device in its current state. This way, if any of the changes you might make cause unwanted side effects, you can always restore. If you download Rom Manager in the Market, it should contain the recovery for your device.
Astro will not allow you read/write access to the system. I would install ES File Explorer. It's a free file manager app on the Market, and it will allow you access to system files, where you'll be able to do things such as remove the shutter sound.
You have to be careful deleting system applications from your ROMs. Some are necessary. Facebook is not, obviously... but you're better off leaving the stock system apps alone and flashing a custom ROM where you'll have many more options. Also, FYI, Titanium Backup is useful for creating user app/data backups, and also in that is allows you to freeze apps which essentially makes them unavailable... however, they can also be easily restored (defrosted) if need be. Happy flashing.
This may end up in the SHOstock2 thread but for now, since it is in very early development, I will keep it here.
Newbies: You may want to read the following posts for more information before you begin this process:
ATTENTION: AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II General Guide/Walkthrough/FAQ/hints and tips
Install Guide:
Note: If you already rooted your phone and installed (a kernel with) CWM then please do a nandroid backup before moving on. Read more about this here if you are unfamiliar.
Method 1:
If you are on an AT&T stock rom (UCKH7/KK6) first you will have to root your phone. Read through this thread to do so. Once your stock rom is rooted you will need ClockworkMod Recovery. One way to do this (without getting the dreaded yellow triangle when the phone turns on) is via Mobile ODIN. See this thread for more ideas. You can get the free lite version here or the Pro version here. You can also use Super Manager to do this. Using either of these tools you can install the latest CherryPicker kernel. After that you can reboot into recovery mode and flash this rom. Note: You should check the MD5 sum of the .zip file on your computer and your phone before flashing it. You can find the expected MD5 sum just below the download link.
Once you flash SHOstock2 you can uninstall Mobile ODIN as you probably will not use it again.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What kernel comes with this rom? And why?
As of 2.0 it comes with CherryPicker (by drowningchild). See post #3 for more details.
"Quality of entropy and the personal touch. But and tested for my ROM by himself. We don't like ex tweaks implementation of that and would rather use voltage control or set CPU." -shoman94
I used Titanium Backup to backup all my apps. Should I restore System apps and data?
No. In order to avoid causing any number of issues you should not restore system apps or data. User apps and data should be fine though.
I just flashed the latest SHOstock2 or my kernel of choice. Battery life seems bad. What should I do?
You should really wait a couple of days before you can gauge battery usage.
Okay, a couple of days have passed and I suspect something is using too much battery. Now what should I do?
A good idea is to use BetterBatteryStats to find out what is going on.
I cannot get the default messaging app to launch from the icon on the home screen or in the app drawer. What is wrong?
This happens sometimes after the initial install. Just delete and re-add the shortcuts and they should work just fine.
I use SMS Popup and I am having some weird issues with it. Is it compatible with this rom?
SMS Popup will work just fine if you keep 'Quick Reply' unchecked.
How can I get the weather on my lock screen?
First, you have to enable the Circle (and not AOSP) lockscreen. Go to Settings -> Display and uncheck 'Enable AOSP lockscreen. In the same place you should check 'Weather'.
How do I take a screenshot?
Hold Power + Volume Down for a second or so.
How do I disable the lower power alert sound?
Using a third-party file explorer (such as ES File Explorer), or via adb, delete or rename /system/media/audio/ui/TW_Low_Battery.ogg.
How do I disable the camera shutter sound (when taking a picture)?
Using a third-party file explorer (such as ES File Explorer), or via adb, delete or rename /system/media/audio/ui/Shutter_01.ogg.
I saw this rom has call recording. Is there an app to listen to those?
Yes, though you do not *need* one. Check this app out.
Apex Launcher is notifying me of an update. How do I stop this?
First of all, you can install the update. If you do not want to then go to the Apex settings and find About Apex Launcher. Click 'Automatically Check for Updates' and select 'Never'.
Can I use the TouchWiz launcher with this rom?
Thanks to LiLChris06 you can give this one a try.
Where did this app switcher come from?
It was ported from HTC Sense 4.
Does Swype work with this rom?
Yes, just install the Swype Installer.
I would like to use the Samsung keyboard. Where can I get a compatible one?
Thanks to LiLChris06 you can grab it here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20447007/Update/apps/SamsungKB.zip
Do you have any tips for increasing battery life?
Yes. Remove apps (such as Twitter, Facebook, etc) and use their mobile web sites instead.
Is there a way to turn off the wifi when the screen is off?
Sure. Go to Settings -> Wifi -> menu button -> Advanced. Set Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep to whatever you prefer.
I do not like the default messaging app. Are there any good third-party apps?
Definitely. Check out GO SMS Pro, Handcent SMS, chompSMS for example. Make sure you grab the latest version (with ICS support).
I do not like the order of the toggles. Can I rearrange them?
Yes. Go to Applications -> QuickPanel Settings
Does this rom support BLN?
Yes, though it is disabled by default. Grab BLN control - Free or BLN Control - Pro from the Google Play Store to enable BLN. Once you enable BLN you will have to enable this option in whatever apps you want.
I do not like the CRT animation when the screen turns off. Can I get rid of it?
If you want the screen to turn off right away go to Settings -> Developer options -> Window animation scale and choose 'Animation is off'.
I cannot get Samsung Kies to work with my phone. Is this a known issue?
Samsung Kies is not supported on our phone (only the international version is) and was therefore removed.
I get an error about my charger's voltage. Can you fix that?
It is a problem with your charger, not the rom. This is especially true of car chargers. You will have to try a different charger.
Can I change the CPU governor?
Sure, grab Voltage Control to do this. You can also use SetCPU.
Make sure you read one or both of the following threads for more information:
[REF] Quasar kernel governors and I/O schedulers manual
[REF][TWEAKS] Kernel Governors, Modules, I/O Schedulers, CPU Tweaks, AIO App Configs
Can I use ExTweaks with this rom?
It does not work with the default CherryPicker kernel. If you really want to use it then you can install the Siyah kernel instead and then you can use ExTweaks.
Can I use Google Wallet with this rom?
As of now, no.
Can I use init.d with this rom?
Yes, CherryPicker's supports it. Read over this thread for more information.
When my phone first turns on there is a yellow triangle. How can I get rid of that?
You can use Triangle Away. I have used it a couple of times without any issues but make sure you understand what you are doing before using it. Note: If you used Mobile ODIN as described in the install guide above you should not have the yellow triangle.
My cellular signal does not seem that great. Is there anything I can do?
Head over to the modem thread and grab a couple of older modems to try. Reboot in recovery mode to flash one.
Can I use ROM Manager with this rom for backups?
No, boot into Recovery Mode and do it from there.
What is fast dormancy, how can I toggle that setting, and should I bother?
It is recommended that you not change this setting but it seems there is a lack of clarity on whether AT&T uses it for our phones. If you really want to, first you should read more about it. This thread is a good starting place. To change the setting dial *#9900#
What kernels are compatible with this rom?
Here are three: Entropy’s - N.E.A.K. - Siyah (get WITH mic swap version)
If I want to try a different kernel do I need to clean anything first?
jivy26’s Kernel Cleaning Script can take care of this for you. Flash it before flashing the new kernel.
I would like to do some benchmarking. What do you recommend?
If you really want to do that try AnTuTu Benchmark.
Can I download a previous version of this rom?
You can look here: http://streamingfreebies.com/android_themes/SGS2/ROM/SHOstock2/
I need to return the phone to its stock state. How should I do that?
Sorry to see you go. Read this thread.

Nobody needs to download and use Mobile Odin. Flashing kernels through CWM recovery works fine and is perfectly safe. Using Mobile Odin as a special case recovery tool for flashing over a buggy/ dangerous kernel is another story, but strictly speaking, people shouldn't be led down a road that isn't totally necessary.
Wifi won't disconnect when the screen is off, even with the correct settings, I believe this has been verified by more than a few users. (I could be wrong).
CRT OFF behavior looks like slow crap when disabled, so, for a crisp shut-off, one should/ can, go into Dev Options, under Windows Animations, and select .5 for a value. (CRT Animation needs to be checked)
Last little bit, I would steer clear of saying too much about battery life, or giving advice about how long to let a ROM/Kernel settle in (more of an art than a science). Suffice to direct folks to XDA threads on the subject.
Keep up the good work, initiative is very good!

You're awesome. Regarding M.O., I wanted to ensure that noobs didn't think they HAD to do it that way. In fact, now that I think about it, I'd just assume that people are rooted and good to go, you can even say so, like, "...it's assumed you're rooted, running a kernel with CWM, and capable of either downloading vis wifi to your SD Card, or transfering the rom from your computer...". I mean, they gotta have a pulse.
OKAY AFTER A LONG DAY OF READING AND A HUGE HEAD ACHE, This is what i have come up with PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I AM MISSING ANY STEPS OR ANYTHING... THANK YOU!!!!!
how to root sg2
1. Use Odin to flash stock UCKH7 with Root, available here. Be aware that doing this will require a full wipe, so do what you can to back up your sms/mms/contacts and other data. READ EVERY STEP CAREFULLY. Do not flash a kernel with Odin.
TO USE ODEN, How to root by flashing Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package with Modem using Odin3 One-Click Downloader (Windows)
Download the "Odin3 One-Click Downloader Stock I-777 UCKH7 with Root no BL" package from MultiUpload or MegaUpload. Extract the contents of the zip file to a directory on your hard disk drive. This is a One-Click version of Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package plus stock modem from the development forum. (Contains stock zImage, factoryfs.img with root, and modem.bin.)
Start the Odin3 One-Click Downloader program by double clicking on "I777UCKH7 OCD Root No BL.exe".Now Enter Download Mode:
With the phone powered off, plug in the usb cable while holding the vol up + vol down buttons (but not the power button).
When the warning screen appears, press Volume up to continue into download mode.
In Odin, the small edit box in the upper left corner will turn yellow, and say something like [0:COM8].
Click Start. Watch the progress bar advance in green while the message box in the lower area describes the steps. When the flash is finished, the top left larger edit box will turn green and say PASS! and your phone will automatically reboot.
Unplug the usb cable from you phone after it boots up. Success. You're Rooted.
2. Now that you have root access, download Mobile Odin from the Play Store. Use it to flash either Entropy's DD or Siyah. This will install CWM Recovery. THE APP AND KERNEL,"DD-012.." ARE IN THE FOLDER ON THE DESKTOP.
3. Boot into CWM Recovery and make a nandroid backup.
4. Use CWM to flash SHOStock or CM9. SHOSTOCK IS LOCATED IN FOLDER ON DESKTOP

Correct. You generally only want to use Mobile Odin right after initial root to flash a kernel with CWM.
The only other time I can see it being useful is if you want to flash a stock firmware, but want to retain root. The everroot option works well for this.

Using mobile Odin to put cwm after touting the phone is the best way IMO and eliminates the need for triangle away. Especially when coming from stock kk6.
Crt unchecked is not a crt off animation. The screen does fade some before turning off but that's it. Doing what you state gives it an instant off. I can't believe people would be picky about a split second delay..... Crazy.
Battery after flash..... There is no doubt you need to wait a few charge cycles before studying about battery. There are way to many variables on what effects the battery but bbs can help you work finding the culprit.

While a guide like this could be helpful, in my opinion trying to answer almost every question a person could think of just makes people not have to search. Which makes them ask dumb questions and start stupid threads. For someone brand new to flashing or coming from bone stock, definitely helpful.

Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone has been able to get their hands on the Optical Reader APK. I would really like to use it, but haven't been able to find anywhere on the internets that someone has uploaded it. While I am competent in basic root, etc. I don't know how to pull this from any roms myself. Would really appreciate any help if someone has the time to upload it as an APK, since I'm not rooted. Thanks!
I have been searching for the program as well all week and I've come to a couple conclusions:
There is one individual from the T-Mobile forums looking to help us less fortunate (Verizon) users with the .APK file, but unfortunately there is a .odex attached and he hasn't gotten into deconstructing that yet.
A lot of users are suggesting downloading a program called 'CamCard' from the Samsung App Store (also removed from our phone but downloadable). While this seems like a nice substitution (which I haven't tried), it seems it's only for the business card aspect, and not the all in one package deal that optical offers.
Update: If you do decide to go with 'CamCard', you would also want to add Photo Reader, but you still lose out on translation. 2 out of 3 features ain't bad.
RUMOR: It seems that someone was able to get a hold of Samsung, and confirmed that Big Red did remove the program. From what some users are saying (from their contact with customer support) is that Verizon merely disabled the program and may push it out in a future update. I've attempted to go through every system file and folder but wasn't able to come up with anything, so most likely it's just gone.
I'll be sure to come back and update this if I read any more information.
Stay away from CamCard. It's a piece of ****. I bought it 3 years ago i think it was and when I requested support they gave none so I disputed the charges with my bank and got refunded, It's probably the worst program I ever used. Funny thing is, I can still use it an update it with no issues.
Some of the answers are above. Using Hyperdrive RLS 4 ROM, which got Optical Reader from the international version. However, when you open it, it tries to update on Samsung Apps, and gives you an error that the device does not support it, and shuts it down. Tried getting it on Samsung Apps, and again gives an error that the device does not support it. CamCard is really for business cards only. Google Goggles does not do as great a job either (at least the formating sucks). Until then, I will practice patience....

Same experience as you, (with the exception that I am running stock rooted) it appears that the file it is trying to download is a database, and it is just over 50 meg.
I've read the suggestions to download CamCard, but for me 1) It just looks shady (IMO) and 2) It looks to only be of use for business cards. So I plan on staying away from CamCard. I have used Google Goggles in the past, and while it works, Samsung's Optical Reader looks awesome, and I'm really itching to play with it. I appreciate the responses, really. Guess until someone has time to put it together, I will just have to patiently wait and continue to use Google Goggles.
Well, I guess as just a minor update:
I was able to find both the APK and ODEX files from somewhere in the depths that is XDA. I attempted to move both files into the system/apps folder and change the permissions to rw-r--r--, but after several restarts and do overs, I'm not having much luck on that front. There was one suggestions (via Hyper thread) that I would have to change the build.prop file device.name, but I would like to avoid making edits to the build.prop if possible.
Any suggestions?

Wonder if you can change the build prop, then get it from Samsung then change it back?

Running Hyperdrive 5.0 (before it was removed in 5.5). It works for a few seconds then, I get a black screen, then "Unfortunately, Optical Reader has stopped." .. Funny thing is it is working fine up until this point (the few seconds). Almost (just almost) feels like there is a service running in the background looking for, and killing this task. Grr Verizon.
(Crappy picture attached, could not screenshot the app)
I've got the apk and odex file pulled from an ATT GS4. Not rooted (and still not ready/willing to root. Eventually, maybe), so can't just drop them in sys/apps. Try to install and it acts like it is installing, then tells me application not installed. While I am capable of properly rooting a phone, I'm still a noob in terms of porting an app. Read somewhere on XDA that it probably needs a signed key for my Verizon GS4. So now I'm reading up on android app development and how to do that. Still learning so it will be a while before I make any progress. Anyone more skilled than I am that would like to take a stab at making a distributable APK that works on my Verizon GS4? You would be my hero. I can upload the files I have if so.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Do NOT use the odex file. It is probably used in phones that aren't verizon and has flags, so when they mismatch on app vs device it'll FC. Let the device build its own ODEX. Likely needs to be a /system app too. Try getting a build.prop from a T-Mobile user and editing a few lines from Verizon like brand, name, device, board, etc to a T-Mobile one. (installing their build.prop might work as well but idk). You could use a ROM like Synergy to block their "phone home" stuff or something.
I'm just spouting ideas here. They may or may not work.

If anyone still wants this, here's the stock NC5 Samsung optical reader apk. I just followed the directions on the main Google code page for baksmali and smali to deodex and run this on custom ROMs. I can attach the deodexed version too if needed.
im getting tired of a program on my phone called com.skymobi.lockfram.iphone, as it keeps installing junk, and i have very little free space at the moment. but attemting to find the program will result in a fail, as i cannot locate it, however, using terminal emulator, i can find it, but im unable to remove it, because its in use. so my question is, is there some way, to remove apps/stuff from the phone, while its connected to usb, and not being turned on with android IE some recovery mode, or similar.
the phone is a fake galaxy s5, and i cant remember the features in its very low level recovery menu.
as well as a "factory mode" menu, with debug functions.
Factory reset - I would be careful about which apps I install next time. There is probably some kind of app in the App Manager that looks like a system app or something which you would otherwise not remove... it's a sneaky piece of software, kind of like an Android "virus" if you will. Just err on the safe side, wipe your phone and start over. And stop installing crap, ie. read disclaimers, double check permissions, etc. A flashlight app shouldn't need access to the Internet, just sayin'.

Is there a way you could flash an image of sort? Like wiping the entire phone and reflashing the ROM or stock image... I could probably help you more if I knew the exact model of your phone as you mentioned it's a fake S5. Anyways, if the app in question installed itself in /system (/system/priv-app for instance) then a factory reset from within your phone won't cut it. You need to "reinstall the operating system", if you will, in order to get rid of it for sure.

i have asked the guy i bought it from online, for a new rom, since he states it has been updated, but the installer wont work on anything other than windows xp, which presents a problem, i have no windows xp computers. as well as the fact, the software version, it states to install, is the same as it already has(looking through factory menu) and i dont have another rom to put on it, as its a fake S5, i doubt a proper S5 rom would work. and would rather then wait, and save up enough for a real phone, not a replica of one.
i just wanted to know, if there was some way, to try to remove it without turning on the device, since i think its unable to remove, because its running the app on startup. but if i can get someone a rom to work on, could someone try to find some way for me to install it from a windows 7 or never system?
As I said in my previous post, it would help to have your exact model number. "Fake S5" isn't very helpful. You would find this in "Settings -> About". Or you can post the first 6 digits of your IMEI (not the whole thing), that might help.

model number, taken from settings: SM-G900H
Baseband Version: G900HVZNU1AND1
Kernel Version: [email protected]#1Wed Apr 02 15:17:34 KST 2014
Build Number: KOT49H.G900HSKSU1ANCE
Custom Build Version: 1409757535
it shows 2 IMEI numbers, when looking in the factory mode, so listing both and 8 digits, just for fun..
IMEI1:35523603
IMEI2:35262106
hope this helps.
if not, then just ask for whatever info, you may need.

im not really sure, but since it has 1 GB ram, and octa core cpu, and a MTK core, i doubt its real, it does have all the features, and all works, except air gestures, and NFC. so im not sure if a stock S5 rom would work, since its different CPU's. so would rather get the most compatible rom out there, and try that. not sure if one excist, that works with ANYTHING in any device.
also a real S5 would not have such bad antenna's as this one, i can hardly get a signal out on the country, but it gets full signal as i near a city, of some size. but i might be able to fix that later, after i see what antenna it has, and the price of one.
but im ready to install a custom rom, so long as it works fine after.
also a small note, its a very high quality fake, the case is allmost believable, the headphones are same look, and almost same quality. the only thing thats bad, is the functions that dont work, and the antenna quality, it can easilly multitask, with chrome, and poweramp. so it does the job it was bought for, and that job was to save up money for an actual phone, maybe a S5, but i might do a Xperia Z2 or Z3.
Its just that your device, if incompatible with S5, means that its so rare and niche that no one probably developed a way to root it and much ROMs... Anyway, your rogue app is installed as a system app and is immune to factory resets, you have to find a way to get it out of there. The way you suggested won't work, also, to clarify. You can't play with the phone's memory when its off. The problem is that the rogue app is in /system and you need root to even tinker with that. Ideally you could just flash a new image that would overwrite /system completely.
Edit -- I'm astounded by how they can almost completely replicate a phone and the intellectual property contained within it.
here is the rom, i got from the guy who sold it to me, i have NO clue how to edit it, or remove things, and add other things to it, so if someone could either teach me, or remove the items containing "com.skymobi" i would really appreciate it.

So, wait. Having in mind that you can track the app means that your phone is rooted. Or does it? The question arises: why don't you just delete the damn app, if you're already rooted, with Titanium Backup? I mean seriously. If it's a FakeS5 woth an octa core chipset, it's probably with the MTK6592. If you're not rooted, then just find a tool that can root this chipset, you don't need a device-specific root-tool to do that. I am currently on my phone so I can't currently search, but God, this is just a simple fix. Google MTK6592 root, root your phone, install TiBU, freeze or delete the pesky app. Titanium Backup doesn't care if the app is "in use or running"

Clearly you know a bit more than me about those clones, I never used one... I guess there's a thing called "droid tools" for MTK chipsets.

my phone is rooted, its the first thing i do to any new android phone. the problem is, i cant "see" the app anywhere, i can only see its folder, where it places the .apk files before installing them, and going by that name, i used terminal, to see it is an app running, but no matter what i use, other than terminal, it cannot find the program, trying to use terminal to remove or disable the app, results in a fail, since its allways running.
so its not as simple as you stated. though i wish it WAS that easy, then i would not need to go to a forum, to ask for help.
and before you ask, yes i run terminal with root acces, and SU. so thats not the problem.

just researched the droid tools, it seems straight forward, and easy to create a backup of the rom, and even easier, to select what to install from said rom. going to try and see if i can get it working, will post results here, as soon as possible.
Good. Hopefully you will have some conclusive results for us. I'm sorry I couldn't point you in a better direction, I honestly never dealt with MTK phones - nor I do I ever wish to! Hahaha

fair enough, i will say, its a decent phone, for the price, but otherwise, i would also steer clear of them. but just found out how to remove it, on the device, using root app delete. it was under system apps and OS components, hidden as something called system locker, just thought it was weird it was there, so now the task comes in, trying to remove it from the backup i have made, using mtk droid tools, and see what happens. but for now, problem solved.
now the only thing, thats not working on it, is the smart cover app, it crashes if i try to unlock it, while the smart cover is on, but i bet its just a matter of finding, and updating it, or possibly, remove it fully, and reinstall it.
You should have frozen the app first rather than removing. The former has the benefits of the latter except that it is not uninstalled. This way, you could check if the device encounters any problem.

Thank you, it took me a while to figure out what i was doing. I am super excited i finally was able to get a stable release.
After playing around a bit i noticed the autocomplete bar just above the keyboard with suggested words when typing is gone. I havent tried a third party keyboard to see if this is something to do with the samsung keyboard failing or if i removed something that prevents this from working correctly...
Haven't noticed any other bugs just yet.

I have to ask what might end up being a naive question: Why is the public offered these "Developer Edition" phones? For me, it would be in hopes that enthusiast ROMs get developed for that device. But, if the retail end is never updated and never unlocked, then what good would a Developer Edition phone be, except to the singular owner? Maybe that's all it is intended to be? Just curious. I guess the name is the misnomer. Rather than Developer Edition, just call it Unlocked... It would be a cool thing if Verizon/Samsung would offer to turn our retail phones into the Developer Edition phones for a fee.
It has the do with Verizon. They can't market it as a retail unlocked device amd since it will only work with verizon they can't really say its the "global" or "international" version. I believe if they marketed the device as "Verizon unlocked device" they would have to also offer it at a subsidized prive or "upgrade" and it would be regulated by verizon. We have seen what Verizon does to phones, I would really like if they never touched the devices.
Thay said the developer edition is to encourage developers to buy the device and make not just roms but apps as well. It would.be more so marketed towards someone who is not using this device as their daily driver but want to grab one just to tinker and make neat things specific to the device or use it to test things they've already built for compatibility so theey can update their apps to rin on this device as well.
Conaumers have never used anything with android on it strictly as planned though. If that was the case we would jave.none of this amazing developmemt, thats what I love about the android OS its so flexible.
Anyhow back on track, did you test the rom? What did you think? Should I include anything else or remove something else?

Thanks for the response. I hadn't really consider the making of apps as a reason.. LOL.
I don't have the Developer Edition yet, just the retail, so I have't run the ROM. I am seriously considering selling my retail to get the DE so that I can get onto Android 5.x. Every phone that I have ever owned was rootable (and I have had a lot of phones), but this is the first one that has no root in sight and no update in sight, so, I am considering the Note Edge DE or the Note 4 DE. (Honestly, I am hedging toward the Note 4 DE. I had the Note 4 just before this Note Edge and prefer the 4 a bit more). Anyway, that is why I am lurking in here, trying to get info on the DE.
The note 4 has more support for sure. And it is hard to find a decent note edge case. O couldn't see myself ever going back to abphone without an edge though. (not the silly s6 edges either, I need a real edge.) In any case no matter what phone you choose I am sure you'll enjoy it. These note series phones are my favorites so far. Could onot be better if they had included a physical keyboard like the droids had back in the day. Physical keyboards are boss. good luck with whichever device you pick, if that happens to be the edge let me know what you think.

Could you pm me the links to all the needed files to do the extraction of the boot and every thing needed to make a stock tar from my phone? Also the links to the kitchen and such?
Thanks in advance.
I wasn't able to make a stock tar flashable in odin.
However to get a system tar which isn't flashable but can be opened in 7zip and extracted to give you all your syatem files you just need to open the terminal emulator, type su then hit enter so you can elevate your session to root. Then type tar -c system/* >> sdcard/system.tar then you'll get system.tar on the root of your internal storage.
Then to get the boot image you need to dl some files from http://www.androidforims.com/threads/without-pc-unpack-edit-repack-boot-img.811999/ and follow his tutorial for the extract part. But our file system is a bit different so the command is different.
dd if=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/boot of=/data/local/tmp/boot.img
Then use root explorer to find the file in data/local/tmp folder.
The kitchen I used to make my custom was archi. Get it @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2597220

Cool deal, thank you. Going to get it going asap, but I just found out my dad has bone cancer so it will probably get back burner'ed for a while.
Any idea how to make a flashable?
Other than making a rom like I did I wouldn't know how to make anything flashable. I'm really new to this, this is the first time I've done anything like this. You could ask around the other developer's threads or send one a pm. But I'm sure the best we can do is a rom flashable in twrp or cwm.

Android 4.4.4 I am looking into what it would take to get a lolipop rom on our devices, and also I am looking into a full aosp build to completely remove touchwiz. For now I am happy getting the tw launchers out of here and all the junk apps. Look for more of.my.stuff in the future I am far from done with this rom or this device.

To fix the no auto complete on keyboard open your keyboard hit settings and download your language again and that should fix it.

Awesome. that's probably it I must have deleted that in the rom. I'm using a different keyboard though and the bar is there. I was just thinking for someone else using the rom and wants to use the swype feature on stock it may be a problem. Ill look into what I may have deleted that would have erased the dictionary.

That's odd. Should be able to install. Try using the method in the other thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3103782
I can only think of a few reasons TWRP would fail to install. Check the usual stuff like cables and md5 checksums, then try to see if you deleted aboot somehow.
If you lost that then you will need one of the more experienced folks here at XDA to help recover that, if even possible. The only methods I have available to offer you though would require you first have either TWRP or CWM installed.
Hope you get this resolved though. Let me know if you get through it.

Boy it'd be nice if Verizon just gave us a one-time option to convert our Note Edges to Developer Editions. Otherwise, I don't see there being much of a future for the phone.
