Vibrant root and overclock help - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm new too the whole rooting deal, but I know I want to. I already downloaded the one touch program or whatever it is. I was really just wandering about overclocking my cpu.
I've read that I will need to install a new kernel but I don't know which one. I just don't want it to change the look or operation of my phone. I like the touchwiz and everything,i just want to speed it up. Does any one know what I should do?
Also if I root will I be able to do the 2.2 update when it comes out?
Thanks for any help I can get.

As a newb myself let me try and help. First off take some time and do alot of research on rooting, flashing roms and kernals. Read, read and read. There is alot of info here. It is possible to mess your phone up if you dont know what your doing. Now thay being said...... Using ryanza root plus lag fix is probably the easiest way to root. If your hard ware locked, well thats another story. And if you want to overclock you will need a custom kernal, remember what I said about reading. Now depending on the kernal you may or may not be able to get the 2.2 when it rolls out. Just take some time and educate yourself, and for goodness sake please make nandroid before you do anything drastic.

Like greggory said, you should check to see if you are hardware locked (cannot access download and recovery modes).
To check:
1 turn off your phone
2 Hold volume + and - and power buttons
3 Keep holding until you see the vibrant screen pop up a second time. Now release ONLY the power button, still holding volume + and -.
4 Keep holding volume buttons until you get to the recovery screen. Then release.
If your phone continues to boot normally, you are hardware locked.
If you are locked, go to the Bible thread and scroll until you see the hardware locked fix. Follow the directions there.
The Bible thread should have everything you need to know about modding your phone.

Thanks alot, I will check out the bible.
And good news for me, my phone is not hardware locked.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

Thats good its not locked. The bible is a great tool for info. I also read some of the post by bionix , involving custom roms. Check out there website. teamwhiskey.com. Just be sure you make a backup thru rom manager in case you mess something up. This is a awesome forum with alot of knowledgable people. Unfortunately Im not one of them....

Strange.. are only a select unfortunate few vibrants hardware locked?

It looks like JAC's OC/UV kernel would be the best for overclocking. Does that sound like a good assumption?
Would that change the way phone looks or functions, in terms of regular use like touch wiz?

I like the JAC kernel and no, it won't change anything about the way your phone looks. It'll just run faster

Great. Would you suggest the regular kernel or the voodoo one?
And thanks again for all the help.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

I'm still learning too, although I know I'll never really dip into programming. I use Bionix 1.9 with Jac's kernal. I did have a problem with Pandora and the media player shutting off, but after adjusting the min mhz to 400, it hasn't frozen yet. I love this stuff. I just wish I could get an asnwer on how to flash some of the mods in the other forum like the clear notification bar. I posted in Q&A and never got a response. Too bad. I can't contribute, but I would still like to learn.....

So you haven't had any of the lag problems?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

Ok, I guess I'm going with bionix 1.9 with JAC OC/UV voodoo. That sounds like a good tried and tested way to go.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

What is the difference between bionix 1.9 w/Jac's OC/UV kernel 1.1 and bionix 1.9 w/Jac's OC/UV/Voodoo kernel 1.1?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

The voodoo kernel has the voodoo lag fix already in it. If im not mistaken.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

Alright. Now I think I'm going to use bionix fusion 1.1. Do I need to flash that before or after JAC's voodoo kernel?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

so the stock kernel isn't that good?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

From what I've read the voodoo kernel just has the added lag fix to speed up your phone more.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

So is there any order to needing to flash bionix fusion and JACs OC/UV Voodoo?

Flashing bionix-v

Just odined back to jfd, rooted and used oclf lagfix. Question is can I flash from this point or do I need to remove lagfix?

Remove lagfix.

Thanks a million. I thought so but needed to be sure. P.s. I'm about to flash my FIRST custom rom any pointers.

The two top dogs around here imo are bionex or axura. Each have their own pros and cons (barely cons). I'm personal to Axura myself, although im still on nero v5. Been getting tired of redoing my homescreens over and over again. I suggest going into the release threads, found in developmet forum, for the respective roms and taking a look at screen shots and youtube search video reviews.
You really cant go wrong either way. Check out the rom bible thread for more awesome roms.
I would defantly stick with the Auxura rom or Som's Bionex rom, Ive bounced between the two, Each rom has it's own feel, while Axura's roms are ultra fast, The Bionex rom has more Gingerbread feel and smoothness, Make your own decesion, but as the previous poster said you can't go wrong with either of them.
Just a word of advice, get in the habbit of disabling Voodoo each time you flash, I made the mistake once and ended up softbricking the phone and it was a nightmare for me getting it back to stock via ODIN.
Good Luck
Actually, if you already have voodoo installed and the rom you're flashing to also has it, you don't need to disable it. I speak from experience

This is true, but new. It has only been that way for a little while. Also it ONLY is true if you are going from Voodoo 5 to Voodoo 5 (meaning the one that has the RED recovery).

Is it safe to Odin from 2.2 back to 2.1

I used the search and couldn't find a clear answer to my question which is why I decided to ask. If the vibrant is updated to official 2.2 is it safe to just use odin to go back to official 2.1 or not? I am wondering this because I'm thinking of getting an extra vibrant of of ebay but most have already been updated to 2.2 which requires a different method to achieve root access and since I have all the necessary files for rooting and moding from 2.1 I just wanted to know.

i dont see why not...
Yes, you can odin back to stock from any ver. That is actually what everyone does when they run into trouble in order to start over and fresh. Also, you can easily root 2.2 now, you don't have to waste 15-20 min.

I've been searching threads for rooting 2.2 but haven't found one as simple as the update.zip file I used to root my vibrant and family members vibrants as well. Could you at least give me the name of the app or link to the thread you are referring to? That would be very much appreciated. But if I do get a used phone I think using Odin to get back to ji6 at least would be a good thing to do anyway since you never know what could have been done to the phone by prior users. I haven't searched for odin files for 2.2, but if they are available and rooting it is as simple as you say I guess that would be an option as well.

what rom should i use?

i need a new rom. asop 1.1 is starting to get a little bit old for me. i would like 2.2.1, i NEED wifi calling, and NO voodo but the ability to use oclf lag fix. any suggestions? thanks in advance
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
If you NEED wifi calling then 2.2.1 is out of the question.
Also I would highly suggest you to use voodoo instead of OCLF. It is much more stable and even though it scores lower on quadrant it is indeed faster. Don't be scared of it .
So here are a list of suggestions
Axura
Bionix
Trigger
yea bro oclf sucks big time.. i recommend you to use trigger 2.8! ive been using trigger for a while now, and its the best rom out there in my opinion! dont be scared to use voodoo youll grow to love it =D
okay so if i stick with 2.2 are there any options for wifi calling? i looked at your suggestions and i like them but it doesnt seem they have wifi calling availiable. if they do are they built in or do i need to flash them seperately? if i need to flash it seperately how do i go around doing that?

With Trigger, I have an app called Bloater. Open it up and at the bottom you will be able to just press "Install" on Wifi Calling and done.
With Bionix I think you have to flash the wifi calling separately. You do that just like you flash a ROM except you choose the wifi calling zip instead.
alright cool thanks for the help, il think il go with trigger! does the bloater app come preinstalled?

Ironically birgertime develops trigger...great rom though kept me from my old habits of flashing multiple roms a week....go with trigger. All of the roms run great trust me but I'm pretty sure most will be happy with trigger....great theme, stable, and fast!

Shh don't let him know I was self-advertising!
As if Trigger needs advertising! Simply put, best rom out there.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Lol trigger already has enough users what's the point of self advertising? The rom advertises itself !
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Im running darkys extreme v9.3 with dead horse kernel on my vibrant and i must say is clean stable reallt fast no issues what so ever.
I to came from darkys rom with the dead horse kernel lol but I hated the call recording thing so I switched to trigger
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I've heard about trigger but haven't looked into it much. If i decided to switch over what all do i need to dowmload
All you need to do is flash it like normal ... I use the tiger blood kernel and it runs perfectly!
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
ok thanks im quite new to this does the kernel ur using boost speed to 1.2 aswell?
It overclocks to 1.2 gigahertz if that's what you mean....

that doesn't say 2.2.1 or 2.3

Most ppl put no value in Quadrant scores. Does it feel snappy to you? No lag? Then I wouldn't worry about it. Scores can be miss leading by what apps you have and what is running in the back ground. Or maybe change your kernel.

Reboot and enable Voodoo from recovery. Even if it says it's already enabled I'd be willing to bet your quadrant score goes way up.
Thank you guys ill try it

so i went and enabled the voodoo...i didnt remember it was disabled..now im on ext4 and the score went from like 960 to 1600+ somethinq
yeah on ALL EDT roms, voodoo is turned off by default.
Heathen (jellette) likes to be safe and wants to prevent anyone new from freaking out by the voice or get into a boot loop, so it auto-disables.

Yeah much easier to do it that way. And it is just as easy to go in to the voodoo menu and enable it yourself. Hopefully if a person enables it their self, they will remember later to disable it before they flash somethung else.

Lag fix?

Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda app-developers app
Are you talking about the old One Click Lagfix? I don't think you need to worry about that nowadays in your ICS ROMs, let alone those old fixes even working. I could be wrong, but the lag fixes I know about (voodoo and OCL) just changed file systems from RFS to EXT, and you don't have that problem with ICS ROMS.
PS supercurio's voodoo lagfix is better if you ever go back to Froyo, and almost every custom ROM you see will have a kernel that has it enabled by default.
He's talking about this
RyanZA's lag fix: will it work on the vibrant? **UPDATE**
I don't use it or know anything about it. When I'm on 2.2/2.3, is always use Voodoo.
Yea man, I've honestly never heard of RyanZa's lagfix lol I had to look it up also, and it seems rather....antiquated if you ask me lol
As Wood mentioned, most Froyo and GB roms run with voodoo already enabled, so you don't need to worry about running a lagfix or anything.
I'm not entirely sure about ICS roms, however I can tell you that you most certainly do not want this RyanZa thing.
I remember using oclf at the early time if the vibrant. I only used it back on rooted stock 2.1 though. After that it was voodoo. Voodoo is twice as fast anyways. Regardless I think it was only for samsung roms, not aosp based. Isn't voodoo the same way?
The last time I used it was on the onyx and obsidian roms, back when voodoo caused soft bricks if it want disabled between flashing. Once that got fixed oclf seemed to have gotten abandoned.
Wasn't this method outdated after eclair? I remember using it when the Vibrant first came out but not since.

chimera 2.2 should have very little if any lag. also, don't use ryanza lag fix; i think that only works on eclair. it will mess up your phone. you might as well flash jellybro with devil kernal
