Buying HTC HD2 - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey XDA users !
I'm planning on buying a new phone. HTC HD2..
I really like the huge screen and the interface so yeah...
Just a few questions ;
- I'm from Israel and I'm gonna buy the Sim Free T-Mobile version... Will I be able to install all of the regular t-mobile ROM updates ?
- Does using themes and stuff can cause problems EVEN if you do it right? What is the risk ?
Thanks in advance !

Regular rom updates, yes..
Theming.. Hmm then you would be better of with custom roms,
in order to install those, you should install HSPL, that is actually a little dangerous, but only if you don't follow the rules. everything is explained very well around here. I did it and once you done that, you can install custom roms made by developers here, or you could even go give android a try yes, with SD card you can run android.
The only real risk is flashing your phone when battery is low, always make sure you flash when around 100% full, so if you do something wrong, you can easily correct your mistake without problems. (because when you **** up HTC won't fix your device) so always read what the threads say. I flashed over 100 roms, never had any problem! so I would say, you get used to it, not really a high risk but you must follow instructions, first time read about 3 hours, after that, it goes fast
oh, welcome btw

Hehe thanks for replying
Pretty sure I got it now..
btw.. just asking.. can I disable the 3G network ?
I really don't wanna spend too much money on internet..
So I prefer using WiFi only for now..
Thanks once again !
EDIT; Oh yeah... another question... what' 'Manila'?

Yes, you can disable 3G or data altogether. I use mine as Wifi only with no problems.
Manila is another name for HTC sense or touchflo3d.
You can currently run windows mobile or android on the HD2. Explore the forum to find out more.

Indeed, I needed that too. Nodata.cab for winmo and in android you can just switch it off 3g and other data.

Manila is the userinterface htc has put over windows mobile and is way better then winmo on its own, that is what much devs modify and tweak to get better roms, customised for everyones needs

Oh wow.
So many names for just an interface lol !
Thanks

Seriously... Is it worth upgrading?

I've got an Orange M3100 and i'm thinking of upgrading it to WM6 but I want to ask a question.
Is it really worth it?
Please answer truthfully, those of you that have done it what are the real pro's of do it.
If you can follow directions in the Wiki and are not totally retarded you will be fine upgrading to WM 6. I'm using the Cingular build here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=308378
It works flawlessly. I haven' thad any issue and battery life has been excellent.
Do you need WM6? Nope.
Is it nice? Yes
Reason enough for me are the bug fixes over WM5 and HTM email support in Poutlook. That alone is enough of a reason for me.
Enjoy.
Put me down as a "YES"
Although I agree that WM6 isn't something worth upgrading for on it's own, I have found something that is. On my original WM5 T-Mobile ROM I was resetting the phone at least once a day because of freezes. Since the second generation WM6 ROM here, I've only ever had one freeze - and that was when I was being frankly stupid with about 20 installs in one go!
Is it worth upgrading for WM6? Maybe
Is it worth upgrading to a rock solid, reliable phone? Definitely!
another pointless thread... guys why dont you read the wiki??? or use the search function...
and if you dont like WM6 you can always revert back... jesus mate... try something for yourself for once...
For the shear use of a "phone", upgrading isn't necessary or even worth it...if ya just care about using the phone for calling WM5 is fine. However, if you're like me and want to tweak your phone, then there's a ton of pros for upgrading to WM6. Speed for one, more memory, better tweaks than the stock ROM, and a more stable OS IMHO. I like being apart of a small, but growing percentage of people that take the risk to have the latest ROM released and different than your average Joe with the same phone. People that just make and take calls are boring! Those of us that can turn a cam flash into a flashlight, or integrate a Treo born thread app on a WM6 platform like to be different! I like the risk when flashing, but then again I jumped outta planes and fought in Iraq twice, so my mentality is different than "average".
Good luck in your decision! -fin

Always one prick about. I have read the wiki and and know what i'm doing I've been around here for long enough. Read the original post. I'm asking if its really worth it, i'm always messing around with my phone and i'm actually quite happy with the latest ROM from orange. I asking for people personal opinions on the matter.
If you aint got anything constructive to say get the fukk out of here [email protected]

noob retard needs help

ban me now.
i know i know, any hi! i'm new thread deserves beatings, and whilst i'm fully aware i'm tempting the wrath of you all by doing this....... but i don't know where else to look.
i got a htc hero 24hrs ago on orange (uk). upgrade from a sony k850i so i have never had a smartphone before. i have no idea what i'm doing with it.
i've looked but not found a RTFM page yet, or i am that retarded that i can't even find it. what i can find contradicts what i've previously read so i though i'd ask you lot....
anyway - grovelling apologies aside:
1) rooting - is there one simple way to do this, so far i have found 4 processes and don't know which ones to trust.
2) ROM's - finally found out how to get software for the phone-(shouldn't there have been a disk with the phone?) and have installed active sync. i have just downloaded:
RUU_Herrange_UK_2.73.61.5_release_signed_NoDriver
is that the best/most recent ROM? if not, what is?
i guess i dont know enough about the phone to know the differences and therefore where to start. does rooting your phone allow you to get access to other apps like cydia and icy for the iphone do for example? whats the point, apart from to enable read/write access on the SD card (whats the biggest SD Card a Hero will take by the way?)
3) radios? what difference does it make if i'm listening to queen or queens of the stone age lol. seriously, whats the score here and where do i look for noob info?
help me. people with iphones are telling me i did a bad thing getting a hero. make me wise in the ways of the droid.
please and thank you.
Hi mate,
I am no expert as I have only had my Hero a week and have come from winmo. But I have rooted my phone and installed a rom and it was dead easy.
1. Follow this video - http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-root-your-htc-hero-in-one-click/ where he says to unzip or extract the cm-hero-recovery.img file all he means is find it on your pc and just copy that file to the SDCard.
I would also recommend doing a backup after rooting your phone from that video. To do this turn ur phone off, then hold the home and power button together and that will get you into the recovery area, then just select the nandroid backup option.
2. I have used the Modaco rom and have had no problems at all with it, not sure if its better than the orange one though sorry.
3. When people talk about the radio file for the Hero they are talking about a file that enables the phone to recieve the mobile phone signal, it also enables the phone to recieve a wi fi signal etc. I even think it does GPS, basically these can be tweaked to get better reception, thus you can update them. I really hope that made sense lol and hope you get what i mean.
4. Oh and if you want to put a new ROM on ur phone then follow this video - http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-your-htc-hero/
If not just pm me lol.
brilliant - thank you.
is there a list of available ROM's for the hero anywhere and a list of what they do? ie benefits rather than a bunch of files names that have tweeked - they make no sence to me.
i dont know how you'd weigh one ROM up against another, to me it's like comparing chinese and japanese when you speak neither !
also is there an alternative marketplace, i know apple iphone has icy and cydia. i dont want warez just wondering if there's an alt. community as apple have out there (i'm thinking you guys are 'it' lol)
Don't think there is a list of ROM's as tbh the only good one around is the Modaco one. There is an Orange one out but I think people still rate the Modaco one as better, but I could be wrong in that. If you go for the Modaco one though you won't regret it.
As far as I know there is no other marketplace.
If you get into any problems in rooting and putting a ROM on ur Hero just pm me.

Newbie to flashing - Best ROM for Sprint TouchPro

Howdy Folks,
First, I apologize up front about being such a newbie to flashing phones.
I've been reading through numerous forum threads and was just wondering if someone could point me to one of the best ROMs that I should use? I saw a number of them @ ppcgeeks and on here, including Vetvito's, RSTG, etc....but I wasn't sure which one I should use; there's just too many for me to choose! ;-)
Thank-You very much for any tips, I really appreciate the help!

It is really up to personal preference. If you are looking for speed, I would go for the NRGZ roms (at PPCGeeks). I used to use his stuff in my Raphael and they are blazing fast and stable (comes with the price of extended battery drain though).
MightyRom is also a good choice as well. After that, I returned my wife's TP, so I have not had a chance to play with Vevitto's stuff.
One last one, NFSFan... his roms for the Vogue are fantastic, so you may want to take those for a spin as well.
Like I said, ultimately, it is up to you...
Happy Flashing
Thanks for the tips! I guess I'll just have to try a few and see what I like!
One question that I just thought of.... Are there any that have 'good' battery life? I notice the mention of NRGZ being a little rough on the battery; I travel for work, so I don't believe I could handle anything that hits the battery any harder than the stock ROM. LOL
NFSFAN's latest TP ROM update is by far the best out there.

Thanks, You guys are awesome!
Sorry if this question sounds completely stupid (I'm very computer literate, but not very phone literate): I've been wondering about this - I keep seeing the term "unlocked"; does that mean that once this phone is unlocked that I could use the phone on another carrier (if I have a contract with them of course)? For instance, this is a Sprint HTC Touch Pro, and I have a contract with both Sprint (for this phone) and ATT for another phone (that I really don't like); would it actually be possible to use this Touch Pro with my ATT contract?

no, when you bought your sprint touch pro it was locked..you have to unlock it in order to flash your phone.

Actually, you will not be able to use this device for any GSM carrier (GSM meaning any carrier that uses a SIM card in the phone for it to get service). Sprint is a CDMA network, which means that you will only be able to flash it to another carrier by doing two things: unlocking the device to be able to install carrier specific files (PRL and such) and asking your prospective carrier to put your device's ESN into their database and adding it to your account (linking your MIN and MDS numbers to the phone's ESN).
Unlocking for a GSM device works slightly easier. If you SIM-unlock the device, you can change it from carrier to carrier without even having to tell them that you are using a different device.
On the same note, if you do not unlock the device and try to flash a rom, your will semi-brick the device. And if you flash a rom not intended for that device altogether, you will fully brick it.
Hope this helps.
Thanks to all for the replies! I've successfully updated the ROM on my phone and it looks and runs great! Having a slight problem though, it will no longer connect up with my system (VirtualBox/WinXP Guest). Was working fine before the update, so I'll play around with it and see if I can figure out what has changed.
Thanks again guys, I definitely appreciate it.

Advice pls - new Orange Hero, software ver, root?

Hi there, I'm a Dream and Desire owner who has rooted both handsets and I'm reasonably confident I can follow instructions
A colleague at work has just ordered the Hero on Orange (UK), and she's gone online and started reading up on it - first mistake! She's come across a few complaints concerning the Orange ROM and she's asked me "the phone guy" how easy it is to load the HTC ROM onto her phone.
I was caught on the hop, having never even seen a Hero in real life, nor followed the XDA forums for this particular handset. I have a few questions for you guys, if you don't mind - will likely save me hours of reading
1. What version of Android are Orange dishing out on their Heros atm? Donut or Eclair?
2. Depending on the answer to above, please point me in the direction of a rooting guide for the thing.
3. If I can root, what's the best developer ROM around for SPEED and STABILITY? This is a one time thing, I don't want her running back to me every other week, with problems that I can't solve there and then without flashing the thing all the time.
4. If root can't be achieved, can I use a goldcard method to load up the HTC ROM instead? Show me where/how please.
5. What are the known problems with the Orange ROMs - is it even worth me going to the trouble? Will loading up the HTC ROM make a noticeable difference for her?
Finally, she hasn't even got the thing yet, and since I've never had it I can't imagine what probs she may run into. It would be nice to educate her and get on these forums reading and doing stuff herself, but I don't think that will happen tbh. With that in mind I'm looking for suggestions to optimise the thing for permanent daily use. I don't want bleeding edge, just as much performance as I can squeeze out of it without compromising reliability.
Many thanks for your replies - don't be afraid to get technical with me!

1) Should be 1.5 (can't remember codename) as I don't think they have finished customising their own 2.1 ROM.
I doubt many carriers will do 2.1 on shipped phones, as hero is at end of life tbh and likely won't be made in large enough quantities to justify using new ROM.
2) http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=375
3) VillainROM 12 or any other final GSM WWE should be fine. Just test if a little and it should be fine. Watch out for OC settings if you want it to be noob-proof. Go for safe settings.
4) That guide explains all methods
5) No idea. IMHO carrier ROMs are all crap, just like stock ones. No root is the big one for me.
Just install a decent ROM for this last point. Anything recent that's been up for a while without many updates should be fine
Thanks anon2122, that helps me out a lot

Unfortunately not right now, as the server appears to be down
But it will be back soon. When it is, go to development forum, then in the list of announcements is one for radio rom download links.
Click that, and take the second newest one iirc. Or read the later posts for people confirming which version works on which network.

thnxx alot ill try it out

So where do I start....what easy steps can I do? HD2

So I have had my HD2 a few months now and I've been happy with the stock look and feel.
Now I would like to start trying a few of the xda add ons and roms.....
However I do not wish to blindly jump...I figured I would ask the pros here.
So I would like to move up to the newer windows 6.5.x ( not sure what version were at), with the task bar at the bottom.
So I am on the Rogers Network ( Ontario Canada), with an Unlocked HD2.
I bought it on line but was unaware at the time I got wrong unit for here, as I only have edge...no 3g ( Unit from Hong Kong via Vancouver and ACEGSM).
No worries though, as I do not need 3G as I do so little on line on phone...Weather, a little FB, Yahoo mail, MSN Mail....so Edge works awesome for me.
So if I am to flash say mainly a stock look and feel to start, where should I start?
As said, phone came from Hong Kong
OS Version 5.2.21869
Manila Ver. 2.5.19211619.0
ROM Ver 1.66.707.1 WWE
Radio Ver. 2.07.51.22_2
What would my best picks be for my unit?
Is there an Oficial HTC Flash that brings me to the updated windows 6.5.x?
Is there someone who could advise me on what way is dumb guy proof ?
I can flash, as I flashed my Typhoon enough times......but a Typhoon and an HD2 are 2 different beasts.
Many Thanks in advance for any who step into the Yoda roll here!!!!

hey man, instead of flashing a new rom why not try cht first. its an easy .cab install and truely is awesome. after you installed that, you can then go on to mod your phone with new clocks, skins....well just about anything really. cht offers a quality starting block to build upon. just a thought bud........

Many Thanks !! I will try this out first.
So I still nned to find out, is there an HTC rom upgrade to move me up to Windows 6.5.3 ??? (or what ever the latest version is )
Or is that only by using a rom from XDA?
The reason I ask is it would be nice for me to have the buttons along the bottom of the screen, rather then the 2 screen buttons and the start at the top.....my thumb is rather stubby, so getting to start is a 2 hand job
There arent any official 6.5.x roms with the bottom start button, you'd have to HSPL your device and use a cooked rom for XDA.
Check the stickies in the rom development section for all the info you need on this.
Im not gonna make an assumption as to which model of HD2 you have, if it is the american model (green and red hardkeys / big fat double chin) then you need to be aware of the radio your flashing....
Seeing as you got it from HK then its probably not that one, better safe than sorry though....
As long as you read up on the subject first and make sure your reading the correct information for your device you cant really go wrong.
95% of the "bricked" phone horror stories you see on here are down to people not doing their homework first....
You mention that you'd prefer a close to stock feel for a custom rom so probably either an "artemis" or one of dutty's roms would be your best choice....
To be honest though if your happy with the performance your getting from your stock rom then it might not be worth the switch unless you really really want the 6.5.x look.....
+1 on the CHT suggestion too.
A must have (in my humble opinion) for any HD2....
Hope that helps.......
Many many many Thanks !!! Both donwhann and conantroutman !!!!!!
I will try CHT first before a flash, then when I have read, reread, understand the steps required I will try the roms named.
I have to say XDA is an awesome place to learn....it was a godsend giving my SMT 5600 (Typhoon) new life. As my friend who now uses my old phone will tell you.
Now I will be able to keep my HD2 feeling fresh and fun, thanks to XDA and it's awesome people
Thank you greatly for the advise !!!
