So where do I start....what easy steps can I do? HD2 - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have had my HD2 a few months now and I've been happy with the stock look and feel.
Now I would like to start trying a few of the xda add ons and roms.....
However I do not wish to blindly jump...I figured I would ask the pros here.
So I would like to move up to the newer windows 6.5.x ( not sure what version were at), with the task bar at the bottom.
So I am on the Rogers Network ( Ontario Canada), with an Unlocked HD2.
I bought it on line but was unaware at the time I got wrong unit for here, as I only have edge...no 3g ( Unit from Hong Kong via Vancouver and ACEGSM).
No worries though, as I do not need 3G as I do so little on line on phone...Weather, a little FB, Yahoo mail, MSN Mail....so Edge works awesome for me.
So if I am to flash say mainly a stock look and feel to start, where should I start?
As said, phone came from Hong Kong
OS Version 5.2.21869
Manila Ver. 2.5.19211619.0
ROM Ver 1.66.707.1 WWE
Radio Ver. 2.07.51.22_2
What would my best picks be for my unit?
Is there an Oficial HTC Flash that brings me to the updated windows 6.5.x?
Is there someone who could advise me on what way is dumb guy proof ?
I can flash, as I flashed my Typhoon enough times......but a Typhoon and an HD2 are 2 different beasts.
Many Thanks in advance for any who step into the Yoda roll here!!!!

hey man, instead of flashing a new rom why not try cht first. its an easy .cab install and truely is awesome. after you installed that, you can then go on to mod your phone with new clocks, skins....well just about anything really. cht offers a quality starting block to build upon. just a thought bud........

Many Thanks !! I will try this out first.
So I still nned to find out, is there an HTC rom upgrade to move me up to Windows 6.5.3 ??? (or what ever the latest version is )
Or is that only by using a rom from XDA?
The reason I ask is it would be nice for me to have the buttons along the bottom of the screen, rather then the 2 screen buttons and the start at the top.....my thumb is rather stubby, so getting to start is a 2 hand job

There arent any official 6.5.x roms with the bottom start button, you'd have to HSPL your device and use a cooked rom for XDA.
Check the stickies in the rom development section for all the info you need on this.
Im not gonna make an assumption as to which model of HD2 you have, if it is the american model (green and red hardkeys / big fat double chin) then you need to be aware of the radio your flashing....
Seeing as you got it from HK then its probably not that one, better safe than sorry though....
As long as you read up on the subject first and make sure your reading the correct information for your device you cant really go wrong.
95% of the "bricked" phone horror stories you see on here are down to people not doing their homework first....
You mention that you'd prefer a close to stock feel for a custom rom so probably either an "artemis" or one of dutty's roms would be your best choice....
To be honest though if your happy with the performance your getting from your stock rom then it might not be worth the switch unless you really really want the 6.5.x look.....
+1 on the CHT suggestion too.
A must have (in my humble opinion) for any HD2....
Hope that helps.......

Many many many Thanks !!! Both donwhann and conantroutman !!!!!!
I will try CHT first before a flash, then when I have read, reread, understand the steps required I will try the roms named.
I have to say XDA is an awesome place to learn....it was a godsend giving my SMT 5600 (Typhoon) new life. As my friend who now uses my old phone will tell you.
Now I will be able to keep my HD2 feeling fresh and fun, thanks to XDA and it's awesome people
Thank you greatly for the advise !!!

Seriously... Is it worth upgrading?

I've got an Orange M3100 and i'm thinking of upgrading it to WM6 but I want to ask a question.
Is it really worth it?
Please answer truthfully, those of you that have done it what are the real pro's of do it.
If you can follow directions in the Wiki and are not totally retarded you will be fine upgrading to WM 6. I'm using the Cingular build here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=308378
It works flawlessly. I haven' thad any issue and battery life has been excellent.
Do you need WM6? Nope.
Is it nice? Yes
Reason enough for me are the bug fixes over WM5 and HTM email support in Poutlook. That alone is enough of a reason for me.
Enjoy.
Put me down as a "YES"
Although I agree that WM6 isn't something worth upgrading for on it's own, I have found something that is. On my original WM5 T-Mobile ROM I was resetting the phone at least once a day because of freezes. Since the second generation WM6 ROM here, I've only ever had one freeze - and that was when I was being frankly stupid with about 20 installs in one go!
Is it worth upgrading for WM6? Maybe
Is it worth upgrading to a rock solid, reliable phone? Definitely!
another pointless thread... guys why dont you read the wiki??? or use the search function...
and if you dont like WM6 you can always revert back... jesus mate... try something for yourself for once...
For the shear use of a "phone", upgrading isn't necessary or even worth it...if ya just care about using the phone for calling WM5 is fine. However, if you're like me and want to tweak your phone, then there's a ton of pros for upgrading to WM6. Speed for one, more memory, better tweaks than the stock ROM, and a more stable OS IMHO. I like being apart of a small, but growing percentage of people that take the risk to have the latest ROM released and different than your average Joe with the same phone. People that just make and take calls are boring! Those of us that can turn a cam flash into a flashlight, or integrate a Treo born thread app on a WM6 platform like to be different! I like the risk when flashing, but then again I jumped outta planes and fought in Iraq twice, so my mentality is different than "average".
Good luck in your decision! -fin

Always one prick about. I have read the wiki and and know what i'm doing I've been around here for long enough. Read the original post. I'm asking if its really worth it, i'm always messing around with my phone and i'm actually quite happy with the latest ROM from orange. I asking for people personal opinions on the matter.
If you aint got anything constructive to say get the fukk out of here [email protected]

Simple guy needs simple solution

Ok, here it is. I have a tytn (herm200) rogers provider in Canada. This part is tough to say, I'm getting old and I can't see the stupid time anymore so I would like to upgrade this thing to wm6 so I can have the larger display (ok so thats a pathetic reason) Can someone tell me what is the safest, simplest, most stable way to get that. Everything else is fine. I use for text email notes etc. I'm on the road a lot. If you make it simple, I'm glad to make a contribution. Thanks in advance and have mercy on an old man.
Eric
Maybe you could just add the htc home cab (do a search) this way you can have a GIANT clock. If you really want to upgrade to WM6 its pretty easy. Check out the WIKI and Load Hard SPL before you try to upgrade. I was a little nervous my first time but once you put hard spl on your phone changing ROMS is easy and addicting.
Thanks, I spent today reading (with glasses) and it is kind of intimidating but HTC and Rogers are no help and there seem to be so many choices in terms of roms and the danger of an expensive brick looming over my shoulder
what exactly do you mean by larger display? maybe you can just change the size of text and install the htc large start menu and large title bar. dont know if they both work in wm5 though
something like the standard wm6 screen would be great

If you want to flash you should do as indicated, and start by reading through the Wiki. Then go and read through the MrVanx guide for HardSPL. Don't flash without loading it first! Here's where you can download HardSPL. After that you just need to find yourself a good ROM. I'm currently running this one on my Hermes and so far I like really it.
But if you don't want to go to the trouble of flashing, but just want a bigger "clock" on your Today screen, then I'd recommend looking into the Pocket Digital Clock Today plugin from ProjectION. It will give you a big digital clock on your Today screen. I've attached a capture of my screen for your reference. Good luck with your flashing!
Thanks for the advice. Got brave last night (the tequila helped) and put in the hard SPL then tried Schapp 4.22. I like it but I dont have enough memory I guess, its kind of slow. Trying to find a light version now

Schaps makes excellent ROM's. But if you're going Schaps I'd recommend his latest 4.30 ROM, rather than 4.22. Or if you want to go up to Windows Mobile 6.1 then try the Faria / Dr Puttingham ROM I linked in the previous post. It's actually a little faster, and it's a Big Storage ROM so you'll get a little more breathing room for installing applications.

It's Titan Time Now!! (NOT A NOOB HERE) (TweakMan-General Questions Thread Creator)

**THIS IS NOT A NOOB QUESTION, IM NOT ASKING HOW TO INSTALL THIS, OR ANYTHING OF THAT NATURE!! SO PLEASE DON'T BLOW IT OFF LIKE IT'S A STRAIGHT NOOB ?? THAT WILL TAKE DAYS TO EXPLAIN**
Hey guys, Tweak here. Guess what. Just bought a Titan. I've been running my faithful Vogue for the past year, but with my new business opening up, I really need the WifiRouter , which I have to recommend! BUT I NEED YOU HELP!!! PLEASE!!!
I want to use the BuilOS PPCgeeks Kitchen to install a custom ROM on my new Titan (of course) , but I am so caught up in the Vogue world, that I am lost over here in Titan land.
All I need to know is where to find a good ROM , preferably Alltel ROM, but pretty much any ROM , that will upgrade my RADIO version, so I can use the BuildOS ROM's.
I guess you have to upgrade the radio in the Titan, just as you do in the Vogue to use these ROMs, correct?
Also, which build , or what ROM do you recommend me trying out first.
Thanks guys. I really hope you help a long time XDA bud out here.
I have used several of DCD's Titan ROM's and I love them. BTW, I have an Alltel PPC-6800. I just flashed mine again with DCD's newest ROM 3.2.5 and I am using radio 3.42.30, with no problems yet. Good luck and welcome to Titan world.

X2 on that
Are you dead set on using BuildOS from ppcgeeks?
I would use roms based off dcd's kitchen only. ppckitchen doesn't seem nearly as stable as dcd's roms.
I just bought my girlfriend a vogue yesterday and we were upgrading the rom and everything. Theyre basically the same in regards to upgrading
Agree with the majority
I have to agree that the DCD ROMs have treated me the best.
I have tried the ppcgeeks Kitchen and always come back.
haha thats silly. your claim to fame is creating a thread in r&d. had to point it out
but yeah, use DCD's latest, and 3.42.30 radio. you can't go wrong.
Thanks Guys!!!
Hey guys. Thanks for the info. Im gettin ready to try DCD's kitchen right now.
And hey agaus, thats not my ticket to fame. But that is how most people on this site know me is for answering things in that thread. Everyone has clicked it one time or another.
The only reason I mentioned it here is for this reason. If a noob posted a question in here , and has very little knowledge of flashing, most of the time, the thread is completley looked over. I just wanted to make it a point that I wasn't a noob, and that I just needed some guidance here in the titan world.
Also. I miss my Vogue. I loved my Vogue. But the Titan ROCKS! The only thing that actually made me keep it was the ability to use WifiRouter. I run my laptop, my iPod touch, and everything off it. I even created an app to run along side with WifiRouter, that will allow to connect to my PS3.
Get wifirouter if you do not have it.
Thanks guys.

If you were "not a NOOB" then perhaps your first two posts here in "Titan Land" would have been researched prior to posting. I'm sorry to say this, but there is plenty of information about kitchens and w/e else. And most of which is preference to the user. The DCD roms are about the best you'll find here, or anywhere else for that matter. Making more then half of your first post about how much of an un-noob you are doesn't help your case when you ask for help. Just ask it like anybody else would and I'm sure it would be answered. Even if answered before.
Try them both out....PPCGeeks kitchen and DCD......there are a lot of good chefs......try NO2Chem his tools are great and so are his ROMS......Nexvision is great and JD's ROMS which you should know if you came from the Vogue.....try em all and see what YOU like.....that is the best way....
you can always try and step outside the box of dcd and no2chem, and try out JDs rom. he just began working on the titan again about 2 weeks ago, and i think the speed of his rom alone justifies why people should atleast give it a spin.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=32990
(the latest rom on there labeled 8-4-08 has a defect with reading sd cards. but he fixed it already in his test rom and i think a solid release should be out pretty soon)
but for your radio....why not just flash the radio only via sd? its so much easier. 3.42.50 is out now, seems to be getting a good response

Neon Cooking

I don't know how to go about this, but since seth isnt goin to be making anymore roms the the Neon, I was wondering if someone could starting towards his direction. I would be the first to do this, but i haven't a clue where start. Sorry if this sounds dumb.
well first big thanx for you on taking on this task and its great appreciated im sure by the NEON community.im sure u already asked seth on how to start cooking and search this forum for some other NEON developers.ill help as much as i can.thanx
-wayne
Im learning to cook foor the Neon aswell Seth has given me soem tips and the kitchen he uses, although i don't know how we can better Seths current Rom its great
Could you show me the foundation of it? build on up?
Neon and Niki are very simulare ... i doesnt understand, why nobody try to found out, the different settings off both device, to create a OEM Pack?
An OEM pack would be great
I'm in the same boat myself. I've been reading the forums here for a while now and have a ****load of tools, but I don't know if I have the right tools to cook a ROM for the neon200.
I'm using Seth's Diamond v4 and it works very well, but I would like to cook a ROM that is stripped to the bone and build it back up over time.
If you have any hints or tips on how to cook for the neon please post them, and I'll try to post anything useful (or unsuccessful, until I brick my phone, lol)
Cheers.
starting from scratch?
I believe we should start by changing toms rom and black mary rom to be configured for the neon. it would be great to be able to have everyone benefit from they're work.
Excuse me...could you please direct me to the kitchen?
If someone has a kitchen, I'll start cooking today. I've cooked afew of my own roms, for private use, on my Kaiser. I've had my NEON 300 for about a month, and love it. If Seth has a kitchen do we know which? If someone's already obtained it from him, can you post it? I'll work on an OEM pack...this isn't really all that different from most of them floating around, it's not like most of the HTC apps haven't already been pooped out in oem fashion, ready to cook. This is how communities grow, with people willing to learn for the support and benefit of everyone.
I just cooked my first Neon200 ROM on the weekend using the Kaiser Kitchen with htcrt settings that NetrunnerAT posted:
[Neon]
Experimental=1
ModelId=NEON****
SignMaxChunkSize=64
RomSections=4, "0x200,SPL,262144,TRUE", "0x600,Splash,262144,FALSE", "0x301,Radio,17563648,TRUE", "0x400,OS,0,FALSE"
I took a vendor image and added some packages cooked it and flashed it and my phone still worked after it, lol. Not all the apps I added worked, but the process did.
I'm going to play with it some more until I get it right (my GFs new favorite saying is, "Are you playing with that f**king phone again!!!). I'd like to build an ultralite ROM with decent drivers that can be built on.
Netrunner posted in this thread that creating an OEM pack for the Neon shouldn't be too hard, but it seems that there aren't alot of knowledgeable people out there with Neons. The differences might be small but to a n00b (like me, lol) they're pretty major. I've read about as much as I can, (I saved my weekend FF session and it has 259 tabs - and on a side note it peaked @ 1,002,384K and while I know that IE would have drowned in it's own blood, 4MB per tab still seems excessive ...) Any Neon specific help and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Next I'm gonna try and take a stock WM6 ROM and port it to 6.1, we'll see what happens from there ...
Hey hey, well done. sounds good my girlfriend says the same thing haha
solution for that problem
I often hear it from my girl too... what I have done is bought her a htc dual now she's into xda too... a question though how can I know if I have a neon or a htc touch dual? from the back of the phone I have HTC dual but when I search into net NEON looks like a htc dual touch... a bit confused here

where are you from? If your in the US, most cases you have a neon. If it doesnt have it listed (on back of device), you probably have a niki. Check settings>device information>identity

I've got the Niki Kitchen, where do I change the settings so I can make the rom for a Neon200 instead of for the Niki?
I have no real idea about this stuff yet, but would like to learn and be involved...
Why is it that you can't take an existing Niki ROM and simply change a couple of settings and cook an Neon ROM?

Manilla Rom
If any one has the kitchen, and is willing to throw out a few pointers, I would be more than happy to get started on a Manilla ROM. Does anyone have any idea where to get one? I PM'd Seth, but have not gotten a reply yet. Any ideas?

Buying HTC HD2

Hey XDA users !
I'm planning on buying a new phone. HTC HD2..
I really like the huge screen and the interface so yeah...
Just a few questions ;
- I'm from Israel and I'm gonna buy the Sim Free T-Mobile version... Will I be able to install all of the regular t-mobile ROM updates ?
- Does using themes and stuff can cause problems EVEN if you do it right? What is the risk ?
Thanks in advance !
Regular rom updates, yes..
Theming.. Hmm then you would be better of with custom roms,
in order to install those, you should install HSPL, that is actually a little dangerous, but only if you don't follow the rules. everything is explained very well around here. I did it and once you done that, you can install custom roms made by developers here, or you could even go give android a try yes, with SD card you can run android.
The only real risk is flashing your phone when battery is low, always make sure you flash when around 100% full, so if you do something wrong, you can easily correct your mistake without problems. (because when you **** up HTC won't fix your device) so always read what the threads say. I flashed over 100 roms, never had any problem! so I would say, you get used to it, not really a high risk but you must follow instructions, first time read about 3 hours, after that, it goes fast
oh, welcome btw
Hehe thanks for replying
Pretty sure I got it now..
btw.. just asking.. can I disable the 3G network ?
I really don't wanna spend too much money on internet..
So I prefer using WiFi only for now..
Thanks once again !
EDIT; Oh yeah... another question... what' 'Manila'?
Yes, you can disable 3G or data altogether. I use mine as Wifi only with no problems.
Manila is another name for HTC sense or touchflo3d.
You can currently run windows mobile or android on the HD2. Explore the forum to find out more.
Indeed, I needed that too. Nodata.cab for winmo and in android you can just switch it off 3g and other data.
Manila is the userinterface htc has put over windows mobile and is way better then winmo on its own, that is what much devs modify and tweak to get better roms, customised for everyones needs
Oh wow.
So many names for just an interface lol !
Thanks
