Ok, here it is. I have a tytn (herm200) rogers provider in Canada. This part is tough to say, I'm getting old and I can't see the stupid time anymore so I would like to upgrade this thing to wm6 so I can have the larger display (ok so thats a pathetic reason) Can someone tell me what is the safest, simplest, most stable way to get that. Everything else is fine. I use for text email notes etc. I'm on the road a lot. If you make it simple, I'm glad to make a contribution. Thanks in advance and have mercy on an old man.
Eric
Maybe you could just add the htc home cab (do a search) this way you can have a GIANT clock. If you really want to upgrade to WM6 its pretty easy. Check out the WIKI and Load Hard SPL before you try to upgrade. I was a little nervous my first time but once you put hard spl on your phone changing ROMS is easy and addicting.
Thanks, I spent today reading (with glasses) and it is kind of intimidating but HTC and Rogers are no help and there seem to be so many choices in terms of roms and the danger of an expensive brick looming over my shoulder
what exactly do you mean by larger display? maybe you can just change the size of text and install the htc large start menu and large title bar. dont know if they both work in wm5 though
something like the standard wm6 screen would be great

If you want to flash you should do as indicated, and start by reading through the Wiki. Then go and read through the MrVanx guide for HardSPL. Don't flash without loading it first! Here's where you can download HardSPL. After that you just need to find yourself a good ROM. I'm currently running this one on my Hermes and so far I like really it.
But if you don't want to go to the trouble of flashing, but just want a bigger "clock" on your Today screen, then I'd recommend looking into the Pocket Digital Clock Today plugin from ProjectION. It will give you a big digital clock on your Today screen. I've attached a capture of my screen for your reference. Good luck with your flashing!
Thanks for the advice. Got brave last night (the tequila helped) and put in the hard SPL then tried Schapp 4.22. I like it but I dont have enough memory I guess, its kind of slow. Trying to find a light version now

Schaps makes excellent ROM's. But if you're going Schaps I'd recommend his latest 4.30 ROM, rather than 4.22. Or if you want to go up to Windows Mobile 6.1 then try the Faria / Dr Puttingham ROM I linked in the previous post. It's actually a little faster, and it's a Big Storage ROM so you'll get a little more breathing room for installing applications.

I've got an Orange M3100 and i'm thinking of upgrading it to WM6 but I want to ask a question.
Is it really worth it?
Please answer truthfully, those of you that have done it what are the real pro's of do it.
If you can follow directions in the Wiki and are not totally retarded you will be fine upgrading to WM 6. I'm using the Cingular build here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=308378
It works flawlessly. I haven' thad any issue and battery life has been excellent.
Do you need WM6? Nope.
Is it nice? Yes
Reason enough for me are the bug fixes over WM5 and HTM email support in Poutlook. That alone is enough of a reason for me.
Enjoy.
Put me down as a "YES"
Although I agree that WM6 isn't something worth upgrading for on it's own, I have found something that is. On my original WM5 T-Mobile ROM I was resetting the phone at least once a day because of freezes. Since the second generation WM6 ROM here, I've only ever had one freeze - and that was when I was being frankly stupid with about 20 installs in one go!
Is it worth upgrading for WM6? Maybe
Is it worth upgrading to a rock solid, reliable phone? Definitely!
another pointless thread... guys why dont you read the wiki??? or use the search function...
and if you dont like WM6 you can always revert back... jesus mate... try something for yourself for once...
For the shear use of a "phone", upgrading isn't necessary or even worth it...if ya just care about using the phone for calling WM5 is fine. However, if you're like me and want to tweak your phone, then there's a ton of pros for upgrading to WM6. Speed for one, more memory, better tweaks than the stock ROM, and a more stable OS IMHO. I like being apart of a small, but growing percentage of people that take the risk to have the latest ROM released and different than your average Joe with the same phone. People that just make and take calls are boring! Those of us that can turn a cam flash into a flashlight, or integrate a Treo born thread app on a WM6 platform like to be different! I like the risk when flashing, but then again I jumped outta planes and fought in Iraq twice, so my mentality is different than "average".
Good luck in your decision! -fin

Always one prick about. I have read the wiki and and know what i'm doing I've been around here for long enough. Read the original post. I'm asking if its really worth it, i'm always messing around with my phone and i'm actually quite happy with the latest ROM from orange. I asking for people personal opinions on the matter.

Oh god... come in sucker.
First of all, before you even start using your phone, SIM unlock it, super CID it, install Bootloader 1.11 but not 1.04 unless you have Olipro 1.02b or you have acces to KITL, then flash every ROM you can find until sleep deprivation affects your marriage your job and you forget the name of your eldest child.
Then after two months of owning a phone that almost never is in a working state, you'll get it stuck in bootloader mode just after you suffered your first white screen of death, and in desperation you will call your carrier with a string of lies and send it back for a replacement.
Then you start the whole process again...
Have fun... not.

LOL - that is funny, but a little pessimistic.
If you have hacked your Blackjack to shreads, you will have no problem.
Start with MrVanx Upgrade Guides to see the process.
Then, once you have a feel for the bits and pieces of the process, read through the wiki and forums and you will be able to sort through the threds of relavence. It is really not THAT hard once you have done a little homework.
Most important thing - the first thing you should do is upgrade the SPL to Olipro's HardSPLv7 - do that first - that way you can recover from just about anything.
Rest assured, if you have a little experience, educate yourself and follow the guides to get started, your device will work 99% of the time. Don't fret.
I am also one of those new users and my 8525 is coming in a few days but i'm a bit technical about computers so i tend to grab it quickly, i DON'T want to play around with my mobile, i just want to unlock it, then put it to some good windows mobile 6, and then forget about it till windows mobile 7 comes, does that mean i use pof's sim unlocker v3a to unlock my phone...
alternative is Hard-SPL, if thati have seen that making your phone supercid seems dangerous and the safer s true i simply apply hard-spl on my phone? (though i don't even know what it does if its a utility or a piece of code integrated into your phone or a custom bootloader ), after applying hardspl, i simply follow the legitimate official instructions to install TyTN Mobile 6 official rom as if my 8525 was a HTC TyTN?
I just want my final goal to be Mobile 6.0 Unlocked in the safest go...

How do you know that WM5 isn't good enough for you? If the only thing you want on your phone is WM6, why didn't you buy one with this pre-installed? Maybe you should spend some more time reading before you get, and break your new toy - all the best links are already posted above and if you'd read them you wouldn't be posting these questions.

Pessimistic?
That link lists no fewer than five operating systems, for one device, all WM6!!!
Which one works??? This is ridiculous!
This is worse than linux!
...head...spinning...
Thanks for the advice to everyone who gave it... I got my Hermes at 1 this afternoon and it's been sitting on my desk, charging and keeping me from really getting any work done all afternoon. I'm going to assume that all the acronyms y'all are throwing at me will be explained in the wikis...
Don't freak them out guys , get it unlock it install official go to bed happy, if you want to go crazy over installing different versions of roms all the time do so but check the safety steps first (many guides here, Mr. Vanx's is a great place to start) mind you there is no 100% safe option and most of the roms are more or less the same, you can always add cab files of things you want, it's better to stick to a clean rom. If you play with it there might be a chance you screw it... badly (even if you know what you're doing)
Me I just updated the official WM6 (which was released sooooo long later) thankfully in your case you don't have to wait.
Either way congrads on the phone and enjoy it, some small issues aside you have a great piece of hardware there.

welcome... i was like you for a while... i'm a new hermes 8525 owner too... read and learn before you really dive in... understand the terminology and jargon for a while... get used to using your phone in stock mode for a while before moving forward... being familiar with it is important... then the first thing you should install when you decide to is hardspl... good luck...
thanks again to everyone! I have to say that the MrVanx Upgrade Guides link was the best, most helpful thing anyone could have pointed me at - step-by-step instructions to flash my hermes with a new ROM. It was great. The forums also yielded CABs and all sorts of other helpful links that have set me up with a near - perfect phone.
Of course, now I'm bored. what's the next step? 'cooking' my own ROMs? where do I start with that? what are 'kitchens'? I know there's lots out there. thanks again for the help y'all have given!!!

So, I can't read your nick without thinking of the Lethal Weapon movie with Chris Rock. He was detective Butters or something. Anywa, I digress...
I think your next logical step is one of two paths:
1. Cooking and coding - either for yourself or for a new release, if you come up with something you think is different or cool for the community - home cooked customization apps are quite popular - settings backup/recover solutions too - fewer options out there for that right now
or
2. Documenting - maybe something you could work with MrVanx on if you want to pick up an area that is not well documented adn try to document it for folks
For cooking, start HERE IN THE WIKI and see what you can figure out. I am not sure if all the latest kitchen releases are in here, but it is a good start. Follow the links then do some additional searches - lot's of cool stuff... enjoy...
Hi there,
the first screen I see when I boot my PPC up is a nice picture of a mental looking Joker, with all my OS versions and other numbers at the top.
I picked this little gem up when I installed a Joker, first stage update when ROM upgrading, it was fun for a while but now the joke is wearing a bit thin.
Does anyone know how to change this first bootup image? as I've created my own which I'd like to use much more, a search around my PPC and these forums didn't turn up much, so any help would be peachy.
Thanks all
check that, but you'll need to use a prophet flash utility at last.
sweet mamma jamma, thats a long list of instructions to ditch the clown. I think it'll be a weekend job that'un
there are pre-made ones floating around. u can always get those.
thanks for the heads up, I'll see if I can drop my own graphics into another distribution.
Other solution...
... would be to use the HTC black bootscreen that Jesterz is kind enough to provide for people just like you! (and me) Just take a look at post #3 here:

That brings my to this point.
I normally flash my Prophet with my Vista laptop. There is only an official RUU that does the job, all slim and tweaked STEP1's fail. It's no problem, but this working RUU installs not so nice splash screens, and I do have nice ones in stock! But the RUU's they use are failing to. So, with my "I only have a laptop with Vista" situation, I'm stuck with not so nice splashscreens.
Does anyone knows a simple, nifty utility that can open nk.nbf files, so I can exchange the splash.nb and that wrap it up again?
I tried this with Hypercore Kitchen, but that suite doesn't work with Vista either, all the files location are different and therefore the batch files don't work as expected.
Anyway, a long story for such a minor issue. It is just a matter of restarting with my eyes closed, or even better, no restarts at all!
For the vista thing, the better (and simpliest) is to do it from another xp-based computer, since you won't do it every morning.
For creation purpose, check that.

Thanks! I sort of found such a tool already, but this one brings me to more resources.
About the Vista thing: you're absolutly right, but I'm just curious if I could get this issue solved, like an experiment. The only thing is I don't find the tools to do so!
I'm trying to get XP on a second bootpartition, so I can dual boot to the OS of my liking. This way at least the practical stuff can be done, and I expect Hypercore to work properly. Think that brings me a bit closer...
I have the leaked 3.16 rom right now and was wondering what would be the best way to go about upgrading.
want to use dcd's kitchen. I didnt unlock after the 3.16 update and that update took all i had to get it right. Im no dcd by any stretch of the imagination, in fact hes forgot more than ill ever know.
should i just run the update from the htc site and then do the dcd rom and kitchen?
seems like you have to do too much foolin around going back and installing a new radio, dotnet framework (wouldnt load on my pc) etc. just to be able to do it.
it just all gets too confusing, so if anyone out there can show me the light and how to go about this as painless as possible it sure would be appreciated. My phone is dumpster diving latley and is starting to agrovate me rebooting all the time on its own and messaging popping up etc.
Time to move on
thanks

Nice rant.
Anyways, flashing from SD is def faster and more stable as you don't need to establish a tenuous active sync connx.
So I have had my HD2 a few months now and I've been happy with the stock look and feel.
Now I would like to start trying a few of the xda add ons and roms.....
However I do not wish to blindly jump...I figured I would ask the pros here.
So I would like to move up to the newer windows 6.5.x ( not sure what version were at), with the task bar at the bottom.
So I am on the Rogers Network ( Ontario Canada), with an Unlocked HD2.
I bought it on line but was unaware at the time I got wrong unit for here, as I only have edge...no 3g ( Unit from Hong Kong via Vancouver and ACEGSM).
No worries though, as I do not need 3G as I do so little on line on phone...Weather, a little FB, Yahoo mail, MSN Mail....so Edge works awesome for me.
So if I am to flash say mainly a stock look and feel to start, where should I start?
As said, phone came from Hong Kong
OS Version 5.2.21869
Manila Ver. 2.5.19211619.0
ROM Ver 1.66.707.1 WWE
Radio Ver. 2.07.51.22_2
What would my best picks be for my unit?
Is there an Oficial HTC Flash that brings me to the updated windows 6.5.x?
Is there someone who could advise me on what way is dumb guy proof ?
I can flash, as I flashed my Typhoon enough times......but a Typhoon and an HD2 are 2 different beasts.
Many Thanks in advance for any who step into the Yoda roll here!!!!

hey man, instead of flashing a new rom why not try cht first. its an easy .cab install and truely is awesome. after you installed that, you can then go on to mod your phone with new clocks, skins....well just about anything really. cht offers a quality starting block to build upon. just a thought bud........

Many Thanks !! I will try this out first.
So I still nned to find out, is there an HTC rom upgrade to move me up to Windows 6.5.3 ??? (or what ever the latest version is )
Or is that only by using a rom from XDA?
The reason I ask is it would be nice for me to have the buttons along the bottom of the screen, rather then the 2 screen buttons and the start at the top.....my thumb is rather stubby, so getting to start is a 2 hand job
There arent any official 6.5.x roms with the bottom start button, you'd have to HSPL your device and use a cooked rom for XDA.
Check the stickies in the rom development section for all the info you need on this.
Im not gonna make an assumption as to which model of HD2 you have, if it is the american model (green and red hardkeys / big fat double chin) then you need to be aware of the radio your flashing....
Seeing as you got it from HK then its probably not that one, better safe than sorry though....
As long as you read up on the subject first and make sure your reading the correct information for your device you cant really go wrong.
95% of the "bricked" phone horror stories you see on here are down to people not doing their homework first....
You mention that you'd prefer a close to stock feel for a custom rom so probably either an "artemis" or one of dutty's roms would be your best choice....
To be honest though if your happy with the performance your getting from your stock rom then it might not be worth the switch unless you really really want the 6.5.x look.....
+1 on the CHT suggestion too.
A must have (in my humble opinion) for any HD2....
Hope that helps.......
Many many many Thanks !!! Both donwhann and conantroutman !!!!!!
I will try CHT first before a flash, then when I have read, reread, understand the steps required I will try the roms named.
I have to say XDA is an awesome place to learn....it was a godsend giving my SMT 5600 (Typhoon) new life. As my friend who now uses my old phone will tell you.
Now I will be able to keep my HD2 feeling fresh and fun, thanks to XDA and it's awesome people
Thank you greatly for the advise !!!
