[Q] failed to root and stuck - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried to root my vibrant using Galaxy_One-Click_Root.exe however I didn't get the "reinstall packages" option and was stuck in the recovery mode with only four options that I have and I can't choose any one of them when I press the power button are:
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
I can see that my computer recognizes the internal and the external sdcards by seeing an icon for both of them BUT I can't access them although the drivers are updated and I used to install roms using the odin software before without any problems.
PLEASE I'M DESPERATE FOR HELP

First boot up your phone then mount USB open the internal drive and make sure there is a file called "update.zip" then boot your phone into recovery then scroll to "apply sdcard:update.zip" from your phone. Make sure when you ran the one click root.exe you were not mounted and you have it set to usb debugging mode

Bro,
for future ref, PLEASE READ ALL DIRECTIONS before modifying system files on your phone. Failure to do so could result in a brick which is unrecoverable. Also, before you do ANYTHING within rooting or flashing to your phone, Please backup your settings in Clockwork recovery

Why are you asking people to email you?? You've posted in 2 different topics on people who are having issues with soft bricks and simply say 'Email me' in both of them... the point of these forums is to help people IN the forum so others can use someone else's mistake as a lesson.
I'm assuming you are wanting these people to email you so that you can help them... and NOT to have them send you their phone in hopes you fix it for them then never send it back!
Anyway, keep the helping within the forum so others can use it as a learning tool as much as the OP!

Some times I pm the people asking them to hit me up on AIM because Its easyer and faster. And a question like this one has been asked a ton of times and its pointless to make another thread about it.

Panic! pls help?
Hi
So i tried flashing via cwm a rom and while trying to wipe the dalvik cache i think i pressed a wrong menu item. i said something like "back menu disabled", only had the option to format a partition, i did that, and gave me otions to choose from 0m to 4G... i chose 0m. i dont know what partition got formated to that...
anyway, after that, i only got the option to "reboot to recovery". did that, and it gave me a new menu, which now appears always at the power on, with all the options that normally appear when press vol-down... bunt its not on just onle line, its a long list, where all appear. i can select them all, if i tell it to boot, it boots the rom just fine, BUT the screen is misaligned! the press appears higher than normal. for example, i cant press the last row of icons, the back/menu/etc...
any ideeas please?
is there any way to reformat those back? or to flash a fresh partitioning system, even the stock one?
thank you very much

Since your not new here ill give you the benefit of the doubt an assume you misposted this in the Dec section.
I'm on my phone so I can't be of Much help but i reccomend doing a search of both the q/a section and the general section for "partition" and see what you can find out.

1.try flash romracer's recovery from clockwormd again
2.if that work flash the rom again "do the wipes carefully this time"
3.if that work just enter to the setting and in the storage section format your sd card you can format both. "if you have something on them make a back up in your computer first"
and please buddy use the search first
happy xmas
ok just use rommanager widget
reflash cwm then flash romracers cwm
in dev section
its the pds img just use romracers cwm
and advaced restore pds.img first the reflash a rom

TF201 Big Time Noob in waaay over his head

The Good:
I used the unlocker, and installed clockworkmod from fastboot.
The Bad:
Mistake 1: I was not logged into a google account when I used the unlocker. When the device boots, it says that it is unlocked in the top left, but I can't shake the feeling that it was not done correctly,
Mistake 2: I did not make a backup. I was coming off a factory reset, and figured I had no app data to protect, so why do a backup? I followed some instructions I found on the net, did some cmd: commands on my computer, and BAM: Clockwork Mod.
Mistake 3: When I could not get a rom to load in CWM, (would not detect update.zip), I started looking for fixes all over. Root Checker said I was not rooted. I tried using an APK to root that I found in a forum, that did not work either. The exploit involving using an app backup did not go through for me.
Mistake 4: In an attempt to get rid of Mistake 1, I thought "why not do a factory data reset?". Now, my Transformer prime only boots into CWM. I am sitting here looking at v5.8.2.0.
Any time I select "reboot system now", I end up back here.
I realize that as a total noob, I do not deserve the kindness of this forum, however, any mercy/help that you give me will give you several karma points.
Please help.
Any links you can provide will not just help me, but any additional noobs that are dumb enough to do what I did.
Mistake 1: google account has nothing to do with unlocking. If you have fastboot access you're unlocked! so forget mistake 1 and 4
Mistake 2: no comment except that i don't understand what instructions you followed from the net, the cmd part... A backup is performed within CWM ... Nevertheless you're bricked so it isn't very important.
Mistake 3: a big mess in your head. If you just unlocked and flashed cwm it's logical that you are not rooted in your ROM. CWM has nothing to do or care with root !! CWM is totally independant from the ROM, it has by default root power as it runs froms a different partition and deals with /system and /data etc from 'outside'.
You gain root by either flashing a custom ROM (they are all rooted) or flashing the super user itself only (SU.zip).
Mistake 4: don't use cwm on that device.
Mistake 5: you are a monkey typer.... STOP trying every crap you find 'on the net' ! You seem to have quite blurred knowledge of what is an android device, so be extremelly carefull or you'll end with a real hard bricked prime.
Prime is very specific, don't use things that have not been designed specifically for it.
You are in recovery bootloop, see in dev section the unbrick thread (in stickies threads), option 1a.
Don't use cwm.
Use TWRP.

Okay so you messed up... slightly... no big deal... here is what you do..
From the sounds of it you have no rom atm... no big deal... download a rom.. i suggest blackbean or eos...
blackbean found here... http://rootzwiki.com/index.php?/topi...ackbean-(8-15)
eos found here.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1782413
Download and install http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426502 naked drivers.... follow the instructions...
I prefer blackbean... anyways.... now download nvflash from here http://androidroot.mobi/?p=452
Unzip the file.. put your rom where you find adb.exe shoudl be in C:\nvflash\tf201_nvflashpack if you put the file in C:
*******Now.... boot to recovery... connect tab to the pc.... with the windows open (nvflashpack) clcik in the window... press and hold shift button the right clcik mouse and select open command prompt here... this should give you the command prompt.
Now copy this adb devices right click in the command prompt window and paste... press enter... you should see your transformer...
now type adb push /name of rom you downloaded .zip/ sdcard
This should push the rom to your tab... it will take about 5 minutes be patient....
Install the zip through cwm....
Now there is a chance this does not work.. don't worry... if it doesn't work .. go here ....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1615990 this is twrp.... download then follow the fastboot install instructions
At this point you probably want to follow the nvflash instructions to install the custom bootloader since twrp says it needs it... go back here and follow instructions... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774352
start again from ******now boot to recovery....
After you accomplish this, you should complete the nvflash instructions and make your backups...
Yes it does seem like a lot... but unless you want to sell me a paper weight for $5 you need to complete this... if you need further assistance write here or pm me..... good luck Luke... may the force be with you...

The others already answered everything else, but here I'm wondering if it's not just a simple mistake.
If I remember correctly, there are 2 options in CMW to flash a zip file : either an update.zip file which has to be in a specific directory, or choose the file from the storage.
My guess is that you tried the first option which returned an error because you don't have an update.zip file.
Have you tried browsing to the ROM file manually?
Besides that, you might want to setup NVFlash on your device (be sure to ask for help in the NVFlash thread if you have any doubt about one of the steps, so you don't end up with a brick).
The NVFlash thread is here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774352
Since you don't seem to understand Android very well, having NVFlash would at least protect you from most (if not all) software bricks in case you make a bigger mistake like flash an Official Asus ROM on your unlocked device..
Hopefully this will help.

Very valid point Mithrandir007.... just to be cleear when following the nvflash instructions.... follow step by step.... all the way to the end..... from this thread http://androidroot.mobi/t3_nvflash/ dont stop until you see the statement ... coming soon... then you are actually done....
Thanks
Thank you guys for your help, and not being too hard on me...except maybe the first guy.
I will try those things when I get back from work.

I ask this next question with a scared expression on my face...what if the TF201 is not taking a charge now?
Last night it would boot into clockworkmod, and I did not plug it in, so it just sat there burning battery in clockworkmod screen.
Today, I go to plug it into the usb, and I briefly get the screen that shows the battery in the red, then it fades out.
I am going to try plugging it into the wall when I get home, but I am scared that I might not get the chance to fix my device.
It comes vaguely in my mind that I read something about cwm not supporting charging but I'm not sure.
If the battery is drained completely it will need several minutes with wall charger to come back to life.
You are really messed up. Download a Rom from development section.. put it in your Sdcard.
First plug your phone to charger.. let it charge for an hour.
When your mobile switches ON.
Enter CWM recovery or anyone you have.. go to mount option, wipe everything except sdcard. Go to advance and wipe dalvik cache.. then go to Install zip from sdcard option in it.. select the downloaded file.

Some usb connections don't charge... my pc at work is like that.... or they charge so little that it barely makes a difference. Plug it into the wall for at least a hour... preferably longer since you are going to be doing things that may not work out so well if the battery dies in the middle of things.... Also given how frail the charger socket is, unless you have it sitting on a flat surface, I wouldn't attempt doing the work while it is plugged in... Would want you to get the software fixed and you bust up the charging socket or cable...
Prime needs 15 volts to charge, USB only delivers 5, so it's discharging while plugged to an USB most of the time.
Don't know how to fix your CWM problem but I do know the Prime will charge on a USB port if it's turned off. It does take a very long time though.

Thanks for the response. On the nvflash page it says NOTE: THIS REQUIRES A NON-BRICKED AND UNLOCKED DEVICE. IT WON'T WORK ON ALREADY BRICKED DEVICES
Does that mean me? If so, I might be stuck.
I tried installing with the update.zip option, didn't work. I also tried installing by browsing, but weirdly, it does not give me the options of any of the roms I have on the SD card...when the prime was stock, it saw the files on the SD card, but now it just shows me options of several folders that do not actually exist, a couple of subfolders, but no actual files or zip files.
When I boot (holding the power and down volume button) The message basically says, The device is unlocked, Android cardhu-user bootloader. Says something about the version I was running, .28, and that it is looking for an ota update. At the bottom, it says booting recovery kernel image. Then it loads clockworkmod.
I installed the naked drivers, so I can now see the Android ADB interface on my windows device manager. I cannot see the device as one of the drives from windows explorer.
I hope that info helps. What do you think? How screwed am I still?

2 things:
1. I cannot see the sd card in the mount/unmount area of CWM. I feel like this is a big part of my problem.
2. The instructions I see for nvflash involve fastboot. I could be wrong, but if I cannot get to the fastboot screen on my prime, how can I run the fastboot command lines? I can only get to the cwm screens.

Samsung Galaxy Note II stuck at bootscreen [OS flashing?]

Well. It's my worst fear. Launched the DPI changer app, attempted to change my DPI (to a valid amount) and nothing happened, no big deal. My wireless connections stopped working and my shop stopped working. I downloaded a different DPI changer, everything was working except Google Play. I attempted everything then decided to tell it to "change" my DPI to default. Went to reboot then bam.
I get the following:
The standard splash with the Verizon 4GLite then it goes on to loop at the Samsung splash for a bit then loops from the beginning (4GLite).
I've tried getting into "recovery" mode but it won't go, I do not know why. (Vol up + home + power). Need help please, thanks.
(Noob alert, if you mention anything that I might need, if you could please supply a DL link to minimize any more mess ups I might make)
EDIT: I got into recovery mode I forgot you were able to remove the battery (I was panicking, I apologize) I am also rooted with 4.2
EDIT2: I've attempted a factory reset, nothing new happened.
EDIT3: I need to reflash an OS. I'm really freaking out. It says I don't have a bootloader (OS).
Bottom line: This problem kinda... multiplied itself most likely based on my own stupidity. I'm keeping it at the "Team Win Recovery Project v2.5.0.0" recovery menu because I don't even want to boot into anything. Awaiting instructions.

I saw you posted this in the att forums but I think I can help. Just download any ROM and flash it. Twrp has a failsafe now that will basically prevent you from bricking your phone if no os is detected. Do you have an external memory card? If you do transfer a ROM to your card, put it in your device, and flash it. Your not bricked.....your just soft bricked. Or you can always go back to stock. I'm sure your device thread has instructions on how to Odin back to stock. Hope this helps

So if I wanted to flash stock, I just need to put the stock rom on my ESD put it into my phone and flash it from the recovery menu? Is there more to it than that? Or do I need to do that all externally with "Odin"? Where would I obtain the stock rom? And thank you for your response.

I'm talking a touchwiz ROM one of your developers has made. You can find it in your forums. It sounds like you don't have much experience with this stuff. Did you make a nandroid backup at all?

Sadly, no. I didn't. You are correct, I am very new to this sort of thing, I've rooted other devices before (simple one click only, I'm good with computers, but not smart phones) but nothing has blown up this bad before. I've placed this rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261478) on my ESD however, when I put my ESD back in, it reads it as blank. I'm assuming I need to relaunch recover mode to refresh its directories. However I'm very scared to do that because I have no OS anymore.

Just navigate in your recovery back to your internal SD then back to your external. If that does not work then go to the reboot menu in TWRP and and hit recovery. It will restart your recovery only and should refresh what is sees on your external card. If that does not work go to mount and make sure external SD is ticked in the settings, if not then tick it, Reboot recovery again. If still that doesnt work then go to Advanced, file manager, and navigate to your external SD (if you can) and find the file you downloaded, pick the zip file and move it to your internal SD. Then flash it. Regardless of any of these steps if you can find the .zip file flash it. Then reboot. Hope that helps you. You should be able to reboot to recovery any time you need to regardless of no OS. Please keep your phone charging during this whole process. If this works then make a nandroid backup in Twrp.

Edit- If none of this works then you'll probably have to adb sideload your phone to transfer the rom to your internal SD card. Otherwise you can ODIN back to 100% stock which involves a huge download and you'll have to reroot your phone. If you don't know how to ODIN to stock then get on youtube and there are plenty of videos to help you along. The basis for the note 2 (att, verizon, sprint,....) should all be the same just a different file to download.

I rebooted into recovery. I only hesitated because it warned me I didn't have an OS. That worked, I saw the ROM and am now flashing it. I will edit and let you know if all works.
EDIT: It worked, thank you so much for your time and effort! I'm sure it's a pain dealing with noobies, I hope this helps people in the future since it's very friendly to beginners. I hope to not come back to this thread and say something isn't working properly.

No problem man. Not everyone here is a butthole. Its not a pain because I was there once too. Just make sure you run a backup in twrp. You can name it too! Just practice and read around. Watch YouTube videos (I learn by visual)
And I keep my backups on PC in case a memory card goes bad. If you wipe system in recovery make sure you flash a ROM because system is obviously your OS and twrp prevents it from booting and bricking your device. Good choice on the recovery.
If it will at least boot to something there's always hope. be sure to hit the thanks button. It always helps. Glad to have gotten you up and running. If you need more help just pm me.

[Q] Red Triangle with Exclamation Mark when Booting up HOX+

Rebooting after installing a custom rom, a red triangle with an exclamation mark appears with a black background. After a minute or so, it reboots showing the same screen.
Is my phone bricked?
Am I able to salvage my phone?
Edit:
After further research, I think my phone is soft-bricked?
I have tried RUU, but I cannot find the file for HTC__622.
The SD card cannot be mounted so how do I flash a rom?
Any suggestions would be helpful.
Always put it as a priority to make a NANDROID backup of your phone BEFORE any flashing.
First off, try running another custom Rom if you can access recovery.
And report back with the result whether your phone boots or not.

Well done in getting to the bootloader. and in diligently typing out everything that was displayed on the screen with no typos.
Now read through that list of various options again - which one(s) do you think might be of use to you?
Hint: ROMs are usually zip files.
Once you figure that, google for Clockworkmod, and read up to findout what those options help you do. When you find the right one, go ahead and try it out.
Good luck.

With all due respect, as a member of this community I do not like how you are treating newer members. It's his first time, so If you can try to be as nice as possible because if you are in a problem, you would like others to help you without being "sarcastic".
As for the poster. Now I understand what you mean. You have no ROM installed.
Go to recovery, do a factory wipe, Install(flash) zip, and find your rom that you have on your SD card and flash it. Then you connect your HTC to the PC, and Google the following "Fastboot and adb exe" if you don't already have them download them.
Then watch a video on how to fastboot flash boot boot.img
This should get your phone working. HOWEVER if you somehow didn't copy your rom to your SD card before doing your mistake, then you need to Google "ADB push" and read about it.
Hope you have a nice day and hope you can understand what I said . I would have posted links but I am on the phone and battery is almost out. So , best of luck again.

I honestly fail to see what is wrong in my "treatment" here. All forum members have a duty to search first - a forum is not a helpdesk, it is a self-help tool and a knowledge base. I believe my post does point the OP in the right direction, and gives him/her enough information to progress discovery of a solution. I think it helps him/her understand what they are doing instead of just pressing buttons. Sure, it doesnt spoon feed, but in my opinion, doing that only encourages incorrect use of this forum.
Of course, you are entitled to your opinion, and please do voice it. Just dont expect me to take much heed of it.
and of course, please do feel free to help others in the way you think you should. I'll contribute in the way I think I should.

I performed a factory reset and then I followed this guide:
"how-flash-roms-without-phone-storage-sd-card-partion" - Google it, I cannot post links outside of XDA
After typing in the command adb shell, I get an error "device not found" I googled it and found out that I need the drivers.
In order to get the drivers, I connected my phone to the computer and HTC Sync manager did not detect my phone.
I think my phone is still charging but the red LED is not on. Also, when I plug my phone in, the computer played a tone indicating a device was connected I'm suspecting. Under My Computer, there is a drive called Removeable Disk. As I click into this drive, it tells me to 'Please insert disk in removeable disk'
I am unsure where to go now.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thank you.
I have TWRP touch so I don't know the bugs of CWM but I can't charge my phone with my phone off or in recovery.
So, you do not have a rom on the SD card?
Try to reboot by holding down the volume down, don't go to recovery. Enter "Fastboot" and when you connect your phone the computer should install the drivers, if the computer still can't install the drivers, then you can download HTC drivers from the internet. While watching videos on YouTube on how to unlock the bootloader I found people linking a compressed file containing fastboot, adb and the HTC drivers.
Do not panic.
You can not continue with the steps until you install the phone drivers. It's easy to do so, GL.

Try to find here your solution my friend http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2066390
Twrp is the recovery for using sideload. Find a ROM that's in zip file sideload it. And the boot.img for that rom is normally in the zip file also. Copy the boot.img out of the rom and run it with the tools. Hopefully your luck is there.
Driver package is installed with HTC sync manager, there is no need for the software to detect your phone, nor will it in recovery. Check "Programs & Features" in windows and make sure "HTC Driver Package" is installed.
Also when you connect your device to the PC check device manager and report back what your phone is listed as.
When you use adb in recovery, sometimes you have to wait 5 or 10 mins before device is detected, so connect your device, go out for a walk or something then try when you get back.

Hey guys - just an update.
Thanks for the help, but I still encountered the same problems.
I sent my phone back to Taiwan for warranty, and they couldn't fix it. :crying:
I thought rooting voids the warranty, but they ended up shipping a brand new HTC One.
Again for thanks for guiding me, and sorry for the stirrup.

Samsung S3 memory full

My work colleague is an idiot - Despite warnings from his S3 that phone memory was low he continued taking videos and pictures and he has no sd card in the phone. Now the phone boots up but the pattern unlock screen is unresponsive. I offered to try to help him as he said "The last 2 years photos of my life are on there" so clearly a factory reset will lose them all so that's not an option.
So I installed Kies, thinking I'll just grab them to my PC for him - but alas no. MTP USB driver installation fails every time and yes I've googled my socks off, tried all the regedit fixes, even tried installing Win 7 32 bit on a spare hard drive.
I've checked that the ribbon connector for the screen is attached, tried linux boot disks that don't see the phone and now I'm all out of ideas. Any help would be vastly appreciated :fingers-crossed:
Hello,
Welcome to XDA.
Most of the time the screen being locked wont let PC interact with the device. There are many different models of S3, give me your model number and I'll guide you to where you can find answers.
You may can flash a custom recovery or a temporary recovery(not sure because I don't know what is available for the model you're working with and what isn't), if you can get one of those recoveries then you may can use the factory reset in recovery(it wont wipe his photos) or adb to get the phone working.
Remember to create an XDA account so you can post and reply in the forums.

Your issue is unusual because of how it got that way, I'm not certain exactly which subforum or thread you need but I will link you to the GT I9300 Main Forum linked below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3
You can check through the subforums there for anything you think applies, the Q&A and the 2 development subforums are most likely where you will find help, this thread will be moved to the GT I9300 Q&A forum linked below:

If you get replies you can check them and respond there, you might want to find some off topic threads to post in until you have at least 10 posts so that you can post in the development forums there if you need to, there is a 10 post minimum before you can post there. Good luck.

If it is stock recovery then I believe if you can get to download mode then you can flash a custom recovery and flash the superSU zip to root the device then factory reset/wipe data, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache, this will clear the lockscreen but won't erase his pictures, music, etc., it may let him back into his phone, he will just have to be careful because the device will be rooted and he could make things worse if he doesn't know what he's doing. If that works and he gets back in his phone but isn't comfortable with the risk of having a rooted device without understanding its usage then the device can be un rooted by going into the superSU settings and choosing the unroot and uninstall option. He'd still have custom recovery though. You might even be able to just flash the recovery to do the wipes and not have to root, I'm not sure about that though because I've never used recovery without root so I can't speak from personal experience.
I've never owned the i9300 so I'm not sure if you can do that or not safely from the state you are in so you may want to verify in this forum before you try it, but I don't see an issue with you doing it, its commonly used to root the S3 variants and doesn't wipe any important data or factory reset the device

Whew, most of that went right over my head lol. An idiot's guide please? Bearing in mind that my PC can't currently connect to the phone I'm guessing that I need to put the custom recovery file (where to find one?) on an SD card via a PC card reader and try it from there in download mode? I think he'll be delighted just to get his pictures and videos back even if the phone never works again, so it being rooted won't be an issue.

No, to get to download mode you need to have the phone off, then press and hold the volume down+home+power button, when you see the caution screen you press up, if you can get to this mode you may can flash a TWRP recovery through Odin from PC to phone.
But first, before we get to Odin, do you or he know what android version he had before this happened, Kit Kat? Lollipop? I need to see if there are locked bootloaders on your device builds and which ones they are and which are safe to flash TWRP, if the i9300 is like some of the other Samsung devices with certain locked bootloaders that can't be unlocked or downgraded then flashing TWRP could and probably would brick the device. I need some info so I can check for you.

I honestly have no idea which android build it is running on, as I can't get into the settings page or anything else and I very much doubt if my friend knows as he is pretty much clueless on such things, hence the problem. All I know is that its a few years old and when it starts up there is a three.co.uk white screen icon before it gets to the unresponsive lockscreen. I am also almost as clueless with android devices (I'm only a PC guy) - so far my only experience has been to set up kodi with addons for TV viewing which is why I came here to ask you expert guys
Methinks I won't try to get into download mode just yet in case it makes things worse
All your help is much appreciated, thank you!

The device was never updated, it never had stock upgrades? If not then I can narrow down what was on it, when was the device bought?
If you can boot to download mode and if it is recognized in Odin then you've got a chance, at the moment your PC isn't recognizing the phone but if it successfully connects to Odin then you've got a chance, otherwise I'm not sure what success you'll have.

I would put a spare miniSD card in, flash TWRP recovery in odin, access the storage from there and copy the files to the SD card. Easy as pie.
The international version of the S3 (GT-i9300) already has an unlocked bootloader. So no problem there.
Important to note is that if the device is not rooted the TWRP recovery won't "stick" when the device is allowed to reboot automatically after the odin flash. So in odin you have to UNTICK(!) the reboot option and after flash reboot directly to recovery via holding Vol UP + Home + Power for about 7 sec.

I showed him this thread at work earlier and although he growled somewhat at being called an idiot in my OP, he had to agree he was lol. It turns out he bought his partner the same phone around the same time so I checked and it has Automatic upgrades ticked and is on build 4.3 so we can hopefully assume the problematic one is on the same version. When I mentioned the possibility of bricking to him he became unsure as to whether I should proceed with flashing. If he was to send the phone to Samsung themselves would they be able to retrieve his data safely, albeit with some cost and waiting?
Thanks again for your input

That sounds good - all he wants is his files back safely. It certainly isn't rooted. So once that is done and I'm back in recovery mode how do I get out of there, just reboot it from there?
Thanks for the help, it is much appreciated

Yes, after you copied the files via the "File Manager" in TWRP you simply choose "reboot system". Rebooting to system will automatically restore the original recovery you are used to. Or you can choose to shutdown in TWRP, remove the SDcard "safely" first and then reboot.
Even more: After you copied all the photos/videos from internal storage (which should be under /storage/sdcard0/DCIM/camera) to SDcard you could simply delete a few of those.
If them taking up too much space is the problem for the lockscreen not working, deleting a few would of course free up some space again, which would then most likely make the lockscreen work again.
But let me make one thing clear: Flashing anything always brings with it the slight(!) possibility something could go wrong, because you are writing to the EMMC of the phone. BUT I can't imagine a samsung staff member doing anything different. He/she would also need to gain access somehow...
After all it's your choice but hundreds of people (including me) have used odin and twrp on different devices for years now without any problem whatsoever. :good:
--- Edit ---
Ah one more thing. I would definitely make a full backup (System/Data, EFS and bootloader) while I'm at it! You just choose "backup" in twrp, then the "MicroSD card" under "storage" and go from there. Pretty self explanatory. Never hurts to have a backup!

Yes indeed, all is working now as it should. The village idiot actually danced off to his car when I returned his phone - he has strict orders from me to move all his stuff to the SD card and make regular backups to his PC!
Thanks again - would never have done it without you guys
