Just a quick question. Will we have to wait for samsung to release the kernal source for gingerbread before we can get some ROMs off of gingerbread? If samsung doesn't upgrade the fascinate to gingerbread will we be out of luck? Reason im askin is because we dont have any 2.2 roms until samsung releases the source so im assuming the same is for Gingerbread. I love my fascinate but if i cant get gingerbread i gonna have to return which sucks!
thanks!

I don't believe all the gingerbread details are out yet, but I'm sure we will see it.
It'll hit code.google.com shortly then samsung will release it sometime in the next 5 years.

How can you just assume they will be so prompt? Do you have an anonymous samsung source on your eta?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
five years? How rediculous. It will be at least another 15 before we see gingerbread. For God sakes Samsung has a big event November 8 and the phone is dropping with eclair

Do we have to wait for samsung to actually release the froyo update for this device, or can it be attained earlier?
Someone might be able to port over froyo but you won't get a good Rom until froyo officially comes

I wouldn't count on that. We had completely stable Froyo roms for the Incredible a good 2 months before the official update came out.
I have high hopes that Cyanogen will get CM6 running on the Fascinate. I'm hoping that development won't be too different from the other Galaxy S variants. Time will tell.

Why would you say that? Once the devs have the source code, they should be able to cook up some ROMs that are just as good, or better, then what Samsung releases.

Especially considering that Samsung has made all the goodies open-source. I would suspect it will be a lot easier for someone to cook up a good ROM for this phone than it was for the original Droid.
Verizon made a statement that we would get the Google search widget back with froyo. I guess its the froyo widget obviously. But at least that's a good sign that vzw acknowledges that we will get froyo
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
But when we get Froyo, will we also get the option to use Google as the default? It's killing me to hit the search button and get binged.

There are debinged browsers you can flash or set Google as your home page. There's some Roms that are bingless also.

I think Samsung will be late to their own funeral.. that said.. keep holding your breath for Froyo.
i dont see any point in waiting for froyo.....we already have it..i personally think the official one will be just like the leaked version...We should be waiting for the next Android OS (2.3+).....
Gingerbread is where it's at, JIT wasn't optimized for the Cortex anyway and there are rumors that Gingerbread will be. Fingers crossed

CM7 is in Alpha at the moment. It could be awhile for CM7, but rest assured, it's coming.

It turned my slow Aria into a superphone. Incredible support, nightly updates, every feature you could want, very stable. It's how android should be.
I'm looking forward to some cm7 on atrix
Dorian is working on 2.3.5 rom noticed he commented on that in his rom thread
I also noticed the source code was released so hopefully the devs can get it "De-Blured". I would love to run Stock GB. I almost traded my Atrix for a Nexus S until I saw that, now I'm waiting (im)patiently.

Back when they still supported the G1, it kept my old hardware running newer os than some new android phones. Great features and nightly builds. Always up to date and best performance.
Got it on my nook color now haha. Can't wait for it on the atrix.

Is it going to take a year or will we be blessed with ICS shortly after its release?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
If it's anything like the Captivate, we'll get the update via Carrier after a long delay, but custom ROMs will have it not long after it appears for the international SGS2.
Go figure....lol
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
why ask when you know the answer - lol
Being that ICS hasn't even been released yet, means the manufacturers dont have the code to make it work on the phone. Which means we are probably 8-12 months away from seeing a "leaked" ICS.
Who knows. If the phone hardware is similar, we might get an early release of ICS based on the Nexus Prime version.
LOL your right but who knows ICS is designed for dual core hardware so we might get lucky lets just see.........

I was actually pretty happy running cognition, Unnamed, etc, but now I'm running CM7 because I know CM will serve up ice cream sandwich months before we see it from Samsung or elsewhere.

Haha, sounds like what we all said about GB since the Nexus S is so close to the Captivate (and Galaxy S).
when google releases jellybeans, ATT will release ice cream....
i hope its not jellybeans. I dont like jellybeans. lets call it 'jalapeno'
I really hope we'll get it relatively soon... but if not I'll just leave it too the custom ROM devs to get it to us xD

Looks like ICS is a 3 button lay out from what the video shows on the Galaxy Nexus.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
(dates are approximate, based solely on my fuzzy memory)
If the history of the Captivate can be a guide:
AOSP Froyo was released in about July(?) of last year, I9000 Froyo and leaked versions of Froyo for Captivate started appearing around October, official AT&T UCKB1 Froyo dropped in late February. So, about 8 months for official Froyo.
AOSP GB was released in about Feb., Samsung I9000 custom ROMs appeared around May, and official AT&T Captivate GB still has not been released nor has any definite timeline even been announced. 2011 was all that was given in a press release a few months back, but 8 months would put it around Dec/Jan.
But the I777 AT&T SGS II deviates less from the international SGSII though, which *might* make it easier/simpler for Samsung and AT&T to shorten the development cycle. Captivate had stuff like the Audience chip that the international I9000 didn't, and omittted stuff like the front-facing camera, flash, and FM radio. SGSII also has less bloat that needs to be updated.
We'll just have to see how much faster the development cycle is, if it's improved at all.

I see people are building it themselves by taking the I9000 one and changing the build.prop and so forth, but why hasn't the OP updated? Even the Captivate has 16 officially.
Dev doesn't have vibrant. He will soon. He is currently trying to build from source instead of using i9000 rom
