I think the craving for froyo will begin the zombie apocalypse I'm sticking with obsidian unless I find out froyo comes with an app that makes your phone produce gold bricks

I think Samsung will be late to their own funeral.. that said.. keep holding your breath for Froyo.
i dont see any point in waiting for froyo.....we already have it..i personally think the official one will be just like the leaked version...We should be waiting for the next Android OS (2.3+).....
Gingerbread is where it's at, JIT wasn't optimized for the Cortex anyway and there are rumors that Gingerbread will be. Fingers crossed

Do we have to wait for samsung to actually release the froyo update for this device, or can it be attained earlier?
Someone might be able to port over froyo but you won't get a good Rom until froyo officially comes

I wouldn't count on that. We had completely stable Froyo roms for the Incredible a good 2 months before the official update came out.
I have high hopes that Cyanogen will get CM6 running on the Fascinate. I'm hoping that development won't be too different from the other Galaxy S variants. Time will tell.

Why would you say that? Once the devs have the source code, they should be able to cook up some ROMs that are just as good, or better, then what Samsung releases.

Especially considering that Samsung has made all the goodies open-source. I would suspect it will be a lot easier for someone to cook up a good ROM for this phone than it was for the original Droid.
Verizon made a statement that we would get the Google search widget back with froyo. I guess its the froyo widget obviously. But at least that's a good sign that vzw acknowledges that we will get froyo

But when we get Froyo, will we also get the option to use Google as the default? It's killing me to hit the search button and get binged.

I can't speak for anyone but I heard Krylon is going to be working on some things this weekend.
No, well i hope not, but they did they before that they are working on a Gingerbread full out 100% gingerbread rom.

I know they keep talking about that Gingerbread love from TW. Cant wait till it drops..
Gb will drop when you least expect it to drop. maybe when the official drop or maybe not only time and lots of patience with tw roms cause they are next to perfect. so if you dont have patience then you are screwed for being a tw follower.

Quoted from Sombionix himself:
(speaking about bionix 1.3.1)
"This will probably be the last major update to this build as we are moving on to other builds. However, we will still provide support and necessary updates if there are bugs reported. Cheers!
Coming Soon:
We're in the process of making a lot of themes for Bionix-v and Frost. Coming soon! Annnndddd.....android 2.3 in the works."

Even if TW had left the Vibrant we still have lots of other developers. EDT continuously puts out solid work and CM7 is making slow and steady progress. We have alot.of development going on, always something new.
Here's my thoughts. I think 2.2 ROMS are nearing as good as we will see them perform. Check out the change logs for the latest releases. Theme changes, minor changes, etc. I'm not seeing huge leaps and bounds with Kernals. The improvements are still coming, but not nearly at the frequency they have before.
I'm not a developer, so I don't know if this is due to technical limitations or due to the fact that many of the groups are now focusing heavier on Gingerbread.
Team Whiskey is in my opinion the most legit development team for Vibrant. They've said repeatedly they will not release half-assed ROMS. I think they're focusing their work on Gingerbread now. When they come, they will change the game of Vibrant Gingerbread ROMs.

Really, the dev's all work their asses off. Before EDT was here we had just a few dedicated dev's They all did great work. Most people don't keep the same phone very long anymore (even the dev's) so it would be no suprise that when they get a new device they start focusing more of their attention tward that device (**** I know I would)
Thankfully we have a strong team of dev's still working on this and cranking out new stuff all the time (EDT) And we will still be seeing great things from TW. Not to mention all the new up and comers.
If you really want a straight answer about whats going on with TW go to their forum and ask them, that will get you the best response.
does anyone know roughly when we are getting the official Android 2.2 or 2.3? I am curious...if its not any time soon, then I'll probably just root it and flash it myself. let me know. thanks
I work for verizon and just got an email, it will officially launch the 77th of Nevuary...
J/k
No one knows, I do work for big red and can tell you theres been no talk that I have caught wind of. You're best off flashing yourself. Why wait for an ota update when theres a few options that are a lot faster and cool than any official release will ever be.

I really loved Samsung's hardware over every other thing out there. But their lack of updating has made HTC my next go to Android.
Better stock UI, unlocked bootloader, and by far faster at getting updates out. Plus cyanogenMod works on like every HTC device and that looks really nice.
Can't believe sammy f'ed up this bad on their galaxy s phones. Especially considering how many were sold.
Just root, there's barely a chance that we're going to see an official update.
With accessories sold that require 2.2 to fully function, of course there will be an official update. Why do people not understand that?
This really sucks...I was hoping to hear some good news. The upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 was definitely a noticeable improvement on the droid. I suppose I'll have to root it now.

Thought I'd jump in before the lock. I was running 2.3 on my eris just fine and it also never received a official 2.2 update.(thanks kaos)
To answer the ops question, no one knows when it will be released.
Just root and flash sc 2.9.1
At this point the only thing the offical release will give us is source for better kernal mods
Is it going to take a year or will we be blessed with ICS shortly after its release?

If it's anything like the Captivate, we'll get the update via Carrier after a long delay, but custom ROMs will have it not long after it appears for the international SGS2.
Go figure....lol
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
why ask when you know the answer - lol
Being that ICS hasn't even been released yet, means the manufacturers dont have the code to make it work on the phone. Which means we are probably 8-12 months away from seeing a "leaked" ICS.
Who knows. If the phone hardware is similar, we might get an early release of ICS based on the Nexus Prime version.
LOL your right but who knows ICS is designed for dual core hardware so we might get lucky lets just see.........

Looks like ICS is a 3 button lay out from what the video shows on the Galaxy Nexus.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
(dates are approximate, based solely on my fuzzy memory)
If the history of the Captivate can be a guide:
AOSP Froyo was released in about July(?) of last year, I9000 Froyo and leaked versions of Froyo for Captivate started appearing around October, official AT&T UCKB1 Froyo dropped in late February. So, about 8 months for official Froyo.
AOSP GB was released in about Feb., Samsung I9000 custom ROMs appeared around May, and official AT&T Captivate GB still has not been released nor has any definite timeline even been announced. 2011 was all that was given in a press release a few months back, but 8 months would put it around Dec/Jan.
But the I777 AT&T SGS II deviates less from the international SGSII though, which *might* make it easier/simpler for Samsung and AT&T to shorten the development cycle. Captivate had stuff like the Audience chip that the international I9000 didn't, and omittted stuff like the front-facing camera, flash, and FM radio. SGSII also has less bloat that needs to be updated.
We'll just have to see how much faster the development cycle is, if it's improved at all.

Want just gingerbread? Go cm7.
End of story, nothing else to see here. Upgrade to newer phone if you want official updates. That is all: )

Yea if you want ICS Passion V5 rom is the way to go just recently did this to my vibrant and re fell in love with my phone its like a new phone all over again
(yes i just registerd but ive been on the site for a bit just never bothered to reg)
I got fed-up with waiting for an official GB from Samsung/T-mobile and I had been running CM 7.1 since September which was good while it lasted. But I got more tired with the Vibrant's crappy GPS; mine has never worked properly since day one even with all the tweaks. Then the 911 issue and realize that this phone is the redheaded stepchild of the Galaxy S family that nobody really wants to support and I gave up.
Got an unlocked Galaxy Nexus two weeks ago and haven't looked back. I really miss the Vibrant though. I liked its size, just felt right in the hand. The GNex is a great phone but yes it is a little too large IMO. But.....updates are from Google, already got an OTA for the volume bug, and even the GPS is so much better. The GNex "just works" which is something I could never have said about the Vibrant. Never again will I get duped into buying a carrier supplied phone as long as I can help it.
