The internal memory you're speaking of is the internal storage, of which we have about 14gigs to play with in total. This memory is formatted with the FAT32 filesystem, a filesystem which is often prone to allocation table corruption. This can lead to a filesystem reporting it's free space incorrectly.
The solution would be to backup any data on the internal storage to a known safe source (say to your PC temporarily) and then format the internal storage, which can easily be done from the phone's settings menu. Afterwards, copy all of the saved data back.
If the problem persists after this, then you will have to go on an errant file hunt, because files can also become corrupted individually and misreport their size. Such a file if found should be deleted.
Hope that was clear. Best of luck!
Just a thought....how many nandroid back ups have you saved and still have on your internal sd?

Are sure it's not the phone memory where the apps are stored. Because some people who use a lag fix like oclf don't realize it could take up to half of phone internal storage.

Thx For the input...I just did a factory reset through the dialer. Quick and painless.

only 2 gigs of space is dedicated to apps. remember our phones have a 16 gig internal sd card. and 2 gigs of rom if im not mistaken. since its an internal sd card that means apps are installed to the phones memory, not the internal sd card.

I have received a "internal memory full"msg yesterday, with around 40 apps installed.
After moving most apps to SD card, ive still only got 100mb left.
When i check the internal memory status from Appsmonster, ive seen the internal memory size is only 500mb instead of 1gb! How much internal memory hv u got?

I believe the specs says 512mb of ram, and 1gb of ROM. What is the difference I don't know, but I"m sure it runs out of "ram". I don't know if we have access to the "rom". Hope it helps!

um.. I'm talking about Rom, not RAM. Internal memory is Rom. It should have 1GB ROM, but only showing 550mb...
Anyway, I've solved the problem, the logservice of Dell Venue keeps creating log files up to 2mb each each time I force close the apps, and therefore has eaten up all ROM! I've got to root it to clear these useless log files.
Oh, sorry, didn't know the phone had EXTERNAL ram...my bad. You see, my Venue has 512MB INTERNAL RAM and 1GB INTERNAL ROM. Where did you get your Venue from...???
I didn't mean to offend you and thanks for your reply. Anyway i've checked my friend's Venue and it's also showing 550mb, very strange indeed.

Hi, can you tell me where log files are kept? Since I found out this issue, when Force Close happens, I choose Log to SD Card then I can delete manually. But for ones logged on ROM I don't know where.
My Venue rooted.
My application storage area in the internal memory seems to be filling up with junk data.
When I bought the phone it was completely empty. Now its 3.65 free out of 4gb
Factory reset does not help. Tried SD Maid as well, nothing!
Any suggestions guys?

Look under Manage Apps>Internel....you may have some apps there...just move to phone. Much better anyway.
I just have one app in the internal section and its not even big. I dunno why this is happening but apparently my application storage is filling up. Some how the app data is getting filled up.

totally new to partitioning my SD card, if i partition the card does the phone automatically use the space when it starts running low or what?
sorry for the newbishness, but any info/guidelines/or link to details on what its about and how to do it would be appreciated.
Thanks
I had a similar question. Is there a good reason to install something like DarkTremor to the EVO 3D? Always seems I am running out of low internal space even though I am always moving apps to sd card.
You ran out of space, even with 1.1GB and then still moving apps to sd? I find that hard to believe. What do you have installed?

I think what he's trying to say is that even with moving apps to sd he keeps filling his internal space back up before getting around to moving everything in the meantime to the SD card manually ...
and we're both looking for a better solution.
DTa2sd symlinks a partition on the sdcard to data. It does not switch over and start installing apps on the sdcard once internal memory is full. Its only good when you have a phone with a small internal memory to begin with. I will look into something that should help with what you want.
BTW: My internal memory is almost full. With the size of some apps and their data it is way to easy to fill up the internal memory. You are not looking at just apps, but also the data associated with them.

Hi all
My internal SD is about to filled up while my Ext_SD still has more than 30Gb available out of 64Gb. I have some very big file in the internal SD such as Co-Pilot navigation's map and several games' files like Asphalt 6 & 7 ect ... Those are really big though
I wonder if there is a way to move all of those big files to the Ext-SD? I've heard of something like partitioning the Ext-SD card but don't know how to do it properly so I would really appreciates any instruction / guidance from you experts in the forum
Thanks a lot
Partitioning the external sd is a good idea but not necessary for our phones. I would move pictures and music over the external sd and see if that gives you anymore room.
You can try clearing out some space using the Amaze Memory Clear app from the market or doing it manually from Settings>Storage scroll down till you find Make More Space from the internal storage. You can clear out HTC app caches and temp data and other things it ask you. You'll be surprised how much crap gets saved.
I appreciates your replied and suggestion. Yes I did all that and all of my multi-media files were always on the external SD - even my Titanium backup folder were set on the external but, still, those games from GameLoft and off-line maps that really took all the spaces.
Thank you BTW

Have you tried using app2sd I use it to free up space on my internel. Take some of the other apps or those itself and transfer them to the ext

Thanks for your input. App2SD only moved app but not it's data. Apps are not a problem in our phone since we have 2,64Gb (internal) partitioned out from the internal SD Card (16Gb) just for apps. More than enough.
It's the data from apps that took spaces and sadly we can not move 'em to the ext-SD. I've also tried the Directory Bind but it's for the SGS2 and it won't works on our phone
Perhaps some of our clever Devs might be interesting of porting the app to our phone someday and that would be great .
Link2SD would be a better option, but it requires kernel support to work.
I can't seem to access all the internal storage in my Note. I know I have 16gb in total and plenty of free space left. But when I go to setting and look under storage I find two listing of internal storage. I'm not sure why I have two internal storages. This is apart from my external sd card. One of the storage is around 2 gb and the other one is 11gb. Yet under the 11gb it says I only have around 500 MB free even though I almost have nothing on my phone. Whenever I do a backup of my ROM I seem to run out of space. Can't take pictures anymore. So I can't even backup as I keep running out of space.
I thought it might have something to do with the rom so i switched from CM9 to CM10. No change. Now I'm using liquid smooth and it's still the same. Can anyone tell me why I have two internal storages? And why there's so little free space even though I barely have any data?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Please use the search feature... its has been explained quite a few times (by myself at least 3 times)....
Simple explanation:
In order to use the setup as-is (no major user changes), 2GB is set aside for /data and a few GB here and there for other partitions, the rest is for your personal storage... so data/system/cache/recovery/bleh is set aside and you get 11GB~ of usable storage space...
The end
Since everything by default of the FAULTY setup for Android phone devices these days saves to internal memory... your backup's of your phone, pictures, app cache.. app data... it all gets saved to that internal memory storage area... Use something like Solid Explorer and check it out to find out whats eating all your space and possibly clean it up or move some/most of it to your REAL /sdcard...
Thanks. That worked.
I deleted a bunch of stuff that was left over from the previous owner. Not sure why it was still there even though I formatted my memory when installing ROMs. Does this mean that it only formats the 2 GB internal storage? And not the one for my personal usage?
Also I tried searching for some more info on the split internal storage on the forums. Couldn't find anything. Would you please explain or give me a link that explains in detail the function of two internal storages?
Again, thanks for all your help.

The internal storage is not cleared by a standard wipe, IIRC, theres an option in the stock rom to wipe the internal storage but you have to chose it when performing the factory reset option!
OR when using twrp/cwm you have to manually chose to wipe the internal storage/memory...
Otherwise it all stays behind...
I cant find my good post about it... IIRC it was in the n7k forums somewhere... Ive made too many posts to sort through in the interim...
Heres a thread someone else made earlier a month or 2 ago where I posted with basically what I said above, there really isnt that much to expand upon:
