this was an extremely stupid response...not only was it ignorant,it WASNT even "being a smartass" as this is the Q&A section.

The internal memory you're speaking of is the internal storage, of which we have about 14gigs to play with in total. This memory is formatted with the FAT32 filesystem, a filesystem which is often prone to allocation table corruption. This can lead to a filesystem reporting it's free space incorrectly.
The solution would be to backup any data on the internal storage to a known safe source (say to your PC temporarily) and then format the internal storage, which can easily be done from the phone's settings menu. Afterwards, copy all of the saved data back.
If the problem persists after this, then you will have to go on an errant file hunt, because files can also become corrupted individually and misreport their size. Such a file if found should be deleted.
Hope that was clear. Best of luck!
Just a thought....how many nandroid back ups have you saved and still have on your internal sd?

Are sure it's not the phone memory where the apps are stored. Because some people who use a lag fix like oclf don't realize it could take up to half of phone internal storage.

Thx For the input...I just did a factory reset through the dialer. Quick and painless.

only 2 gigs of space is dedicated to apps. remember our phones have a 16 gig internal sd card. and 2 gigs of rom if im not mistaken. since its an internal sd card that means apps are installed to the phones memory, not the internal sd card.
guys I just bought my X10 yesterday and right now my Free Internal Storage Capacity is only 334MB left, I haven't installed any big size Apps. well I tried to use the Backup and Restore but after upgrading to 2.3 Gingerbread the App was gone. can anyone teach me how to free up some space or is this Capacity alright?

This is normal. Google "x10 internal memory" and you'll see why.
thats because the ROM is installed on ur internal memory only so that's what is occupying ur memory and not some large apps..
Try clearing your cache with cache cleaner ng from the market. You'd be surprised how much memory you can free up
I can't seem to access all the internal storage in my Note. I know I have 16gb in total and plenty of free space left. But when I go to setting and look under storage I find two listing of internal storage. I'm not sure why I have two internal storages. This is apart from my external sd card. One of the storage is around 2 gb and the other one is 11gb. Yet under the 11gb it says I only have around 500 MB free even though I almost have nothing on my phone. Whenever I do a backup of my ROM I seem to run out of space. Can't take pictures anymore. So I can't even backup as I keep running out of space.
I thought it might have something to do with the rom so i switched from CM9 to CM10. No change. Now I'm using liquid smooth and it's still the same. Can anyone tell me why I have two internal storages? And why there's so little free space even though I barely have any data?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Please use the search feature... its has been explained quite a few times (by myself at least 3 times)....
Simple explanation:
In order to use the setup as-is (no major user changes), 2GB is set aside for /data and a few GB here and there for other partitions, the rest is for your personal storage... so data/system/cache/recovery/bleh is set aside and you get 11GB~ of usable storage space...
The end
Since everything by default of the FAULTY setup for Android phone devices these days saves to internal memory... your backup's of your phone, pictures, app cache.. app data... it all gets saved to that internal memory storage area... Use something like Solid Explorer and check it out to find out whats eating all your space and possibly clean it up or move some/most of it to your REAL /sdcard...
Thanks. That worked.
I deleted a bunch of stuff that was left over from the previous owner. Not sure why it was still there even though I formatted my memory when installing ROMs. Does this mean that it only formats the 2 GB internal storage? And not the one for my personal usage?
Also I tried searching for some more info on the split internal storage on the forums. Couldn't find anything. Would you please explain or give me a link that explains in detail the function of two internal storages?
Again, thanks for all your help.

The internal storage is not cleared by a standard wipe, IIRC, theres an option in the stock rom to wipe the internal storage but you have to chose it when performing the factory reset option!
OR when using twrp/cwm you have to manually chose to wipe the internal storage/memory...
Otherwise it all stays behind...
I cant find my good post about it... IIRC it was in the n7k forums somewhere... Ive made too many posts to sort through in the interim...
Heres a thread someone else made earlier a month or 2 ago where I posted with basically what I said above, there really isnt that much to expand upon:

Hi
I have a problem with my Android phone. I already select an option to install apps into SD card but each installed apps still consume some free space in internal memory. Example: an app size 20 would take 2-5mb in internal memory. Unfortunately, my internal memory is only 222mb.

Is it this:

Also are you rooted? my method requires root so you can get the app "link 2 sd" so you can move and uninstall boat apps.

I knew that. I tried to move or install apps in SD card but a few megabyte still increase in Internal Memory for each apps installed. So it will be full since internal memory is too low.
Did you notice that?

You need root so you can delete apps that you can't if you're not rooted. Look at the photos, I can delete google maps, but only if you are rooted. And my biggest app is only 10mb because I can move any app I want to my sd, not only some. So you need to be rooted so you can free up some space on your phone.

Yes, it's rooted. But even so, each time I install an app into sd card. internal memory still cost some space. many 1 mb will make it full. If you try for yourself to install an app in sd card and check free space before and after installing. You'll will see some space will be taken. Do you see that way?

Then get "superuser" and then get link2sd and delete apps that you don't use or apps that came with your phone that you can't remove. My phone has 220mb internal and I have plenty apps and I have like 20mb left. That's still a little bit but that's why we both need to upgrade our phones, but this way helps, but doesn't eliminate the low storage stuff.

OK, I think so. Do you know about create 2nd partition as ext3 for Link2SD? I tried it and I don't know what is the benefit to do that?

to tell you the truth, I didn't do that. I don't see the benefit in that but it's meant for moving apps to sd, if "link2sd" asks to create a partition, just tap yes. do ext 3

We can move apps to SD card. Why border creating a 2nd partition? 1 partition is not enough? Do you know that?

I don't know why, but you have to create 2 partitions. Make sure you are careful on what apps you delete.

We have too? No. At first, I can just install app to SD card. I don't have to create 2nd partition. But I did create it with my PC and insert it back to my phone. But I can't see anything different. It just waste space for 2nd partition. So nothing useful for 2nd partition in you opinion, right? I should delete it to bring space back.
U all should make 2nd partition, because some of the app wont work in sd card, plus all the data will link to the 2nd partition, it save a lot of space, but make sure u are rooted

Some apps will not work without 2nd partition? I've never seen one. Hmm, it save a lot of space? I think just moving data to sd card save a lot of space too. It's the same thing.

The application i mean is widget and chat like wechat and whatsapp(it work but hardly sync, meaning u need to open the app too view the msg). And email like k9 mail, it will not notify u new mail if u did not open it. And keyboard app u need to choose everytime u boot. And lot of thing wont work as they in internal. App in 2nd will work like they in internal. And u cannot use auto link option in the link2sd.

Phone tells me insufficient internal memory from one day to the other even though I haven't installed or downloaded anything new.
Here is a picture
You'll want to move some apps (maybe just a few of the biggest ones) to your SD card since you only have 368 MB left for apps on the device. Total space for apps on the device is limited to about 6 GB of the 16 GB total.
