froyo is 2.2 yes so i guess that means we will be getting 2.1 in sept "with plans" to upgrade to 2.2 thereafter
At least is progress i guess

not good enough for such a high end device in my eyes. if it is a case that we wont be getting 2.2 in sept then dell should do the moral thing and release 2.2 source for us to mess about with
Dell have been saying that they wll release with 1.6 and update to 2.2.
Yet again, yesterday, they stated the same thing
Click for post --> Like I mentioned in my previous Dell Streak post, the Android 2.2 over the air update (Froyo) will come later this year. We will ship Dell Streak with Android 1.6.

we already know that, we were talking about the apparent sep update and whether it will be 2.1 or 2.2
I notice he said "Thankyou for all of your comments...." he cant have been reading the same forums and threads that i was...heh.
Yup - looks good on your screen mate.....what about getting it on to ours....there wasnt really much in that, as there was no timeline - is it really that hard to say 2.2 will be ready......"insert date here" and if you dont make it just let us know, then we a, know that its being worked on and b, know what the actual version to be released will actually be.....sheesh - is it really that hard. Personally if they'd said end of september.....adn then it rolled over and they post and say "taking a bit longer" end of oct - id be happy with that - at least i know....in a world of open and instant communication they havent actually done neither....
Am i being too harsh??

not at all, i don't think its the hardest thing in the world to narrow it down to a date... I've not bought my streak yet as I'm waiting for 2.1/2 before i take the plunge...
As far as reading comments on the web goes... god know where hes been looking, one main issue i has is with the horrific keyboard layout! there should be some option to remove that bloody numpad!
I would have bought one of these for the large screen internet browsing. Though it has been a disaster that its been released with 1.6. By the time this comes out nexus one users will have gingerbread.
There is, I have swype and touchpal working on my device and they are great. Look up the swype apk or download touchpal on the market. They work unbelievably.

Agreed Touchpal is my favourite at present.
Don't be put off that fact the main market screen is all in chinese
Just read engadget this morning......ARE YOU READING THIS SITE MR DELL....Droid x already getting 2.2.....
As of yesterday i took delivery of my Nexus One so, for the moment i have 2 phones....depending on what Dell does will depend on whether i have it over the next 6 weeks or so.
I dare say im not the only one...
I don't think Dell actually realise how much they are damaging their sales by packaging such a high end device with what is essentially year old software with no update time fram... I know they said by the end of the year but that's still anytime over the next 5 months!

I think its more to do with we don't have any bloody source to work with!
the current kernel doesn't want to play with 2.2
And so far I haven't got a cooked kernel to boot, so I may be missing something.
To help efforts maybe we should try an nd all work out what there is propriety in the current roms, and then we can include what we're missing.
I am determined to at least get a vanilla froyo kernel and system working...whether it will be any good is another matter, but I'm on holiday for another week so no linux box to play with...
new to samsung all together...
been with motorola and SonyEricsson for ever and a day. My friend has a vibrant, and its pretty sweet.. thinking about getting one. Im NOT NEW to mods and editing, scripting or anything else...I have numerous hand built mods on my milestone... just new to samsung and the "odin" deal it uses to mod things.
he has the TeamWhiskey Bionix 2.1 build... just curious as to how solid that really is, and if its worth the download.
also... any other suggested roms/mods... im not a beginner, so dont be afraid to the throw a curveball at me... just looking for fun to try, since im 100% to samsung.

Welcome, And good to see your enthusiasim. All of the roms you can pick up for this device are pretty solid. I have made it a point to flash every rom I can get my hands on, and have been plesently surprised with how polished they all are.
I would suggest picking up a 2.2 rom, macnut, axura, onyx, obsidian, aosp'ish... and letting that take root on your vibe. And once you get a hold of that take a peak at the FFC thread ( Sorry if this seems condescending, but FFC is Front Facing Camera ). You will be glad you did, because the fact that the Vibrant can be modded in such a unique way makes me glad I have it.
Lastly have some fun with the plethora of Kernels available... Play with stock, get dirty with an OC/UV, or have a little fun with Universal Lag Fix... There are so many posibilities out there
Check the stickies, they have the best links to all these options
All is required it to root Vibrant to unleash the beast hidden inside it!
ODIN isn't used for modding per se, it is for one of these moments when you go "oh snap, i might've bricked my Vibrant"
Before modding begins make sure you can reliably get into recovery and download modes with ADB and manually.
All the tools and tips are available in the bible in the dev section
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=771111
And as with most *NIX systems RTFM my friend where available
Happy modding!
The link in my signature takes care of the basics to get rooted, get a recovery, maing backups...
For roms, I suggest froyo. There is also a link to what many prefer for froyo in my signature as well.
The Vibrant is a cake-walk and a tank, VERY hard to brick if you use common sense. The one thing to remember is that a nandroid does not restore a kernel 9moving from eclair to froyo and vice versa).
well after reading up on alot of them, im interested in the new Obsidian 4.2 and the AOSP'ish rom.
Now its this similar to motorola modding, where i just flash the rom & im done? ...or is there additional stuff that needs to be done? I keep hearing about this "LagFix" thing.. and im not really sure what that is, or what it does.
Im not the hugest fan of froyo, but TeamWhiskey seems to really know their stuff, so i just want to know how to get 2.2 loaded, so i can load these roms.
I have my milestone all tricked out, and custom edits to the build.prop, ect... but our roms are based on recovery images, not kernels, since the kernel isnt FULLY unlocked.
yep... getting the phone on wednesday! pretty stoked about it!
can someone point to the things i need to load the 2.2 based Obsidian 4.2?
im new to samsung & dont understand their extensions or how to load the new kernels.

Im well aware of that. I havent had a phone that belongs to AT&T for a long time. My milestone comes from Telus in canada & the Vibe im about to get is being bought from my neighbor... Just getting a little tired of my milestone, and want a new toy to play with.
I had to post this because the only to working roms are the Gingerbread ones and thats it. Did all the developers stop working on their roms and moved on? or can we expect updates on their exsisting roms?
There are some really good roms out there and it seems as though the Eris is coming to an end.
Hmmm the only two working roms are the Gingerbread ones? I beg to differ....
It seems like most of the froyo roms have been updated around mid-late January.. I didn't know a few weeks was the end of our eris' lives! Your right though, in the sense that CM7 is now the new popular choice, and subsequently the most updated/talked about roms. Also alot of our devs have moved on to different phones and only drop by occasionally here to maintain their work and lend an expert hand
Sent from my GSBv1.5-ERIS using XDA App
xtrROM was just updated to version 5 a couple of weeks ago. CELB gets updated every few weeks. My guess is that Workshed and Tazz are concentrating on GB rather than Froyo these days, though I think Tazz is still working on the Froyo Sense build.
I think that Froyo has matured, obviously Eclair has as well, and obviously Gingerbread is getting a lot of attention right now.
Tazz is still updating his Froyo rom's, workshed is still updating his Froshedyo build, punk.kaos is still updating his froyo build as well as his GB build. New themes and complete theme roms are being built for cm7 AND cm6 constantly. Just gotta check the forums frequently and watch for updates. There's actually quite a bit of action going on in the Eris forums now a days, on the CM6 side as well as CM7. Also I am about to have a CM6 rom in the works.
Tazz and Workshed are perfecting their CM7 roms at the moment but are still dedicated to their CM6 roms too. There are some amazing devs here at the Eris forums that are working hard through sickness and all kinds of personal issues to give the people what they want. The 1st post is kind of like an insult to their work. Don't give up on them, they just have a lot on their plate right now.
Oh no don't get me wrong, I love my Eris. I do like the new GB roms its basically the same style and it makes it confusing which one to load on the phone. Zenexp, Energyexpress, tenzoRCmix those roms I wish were updated too. Especially those roms with apps2sd which makes it better for the Eris being that the Eris doesn't have lots of space.
But I understand these Dev's working hard to ensure that our phone become part of the whats new in the market on other phones. I commend their hard work.
just fyi both the gingerbread roms now have app2sd and cache2cache working. also, tazz had commented recently in his gingerbread thread about working on the camera for froyo sense.
Any of the 2.1 roms have been taken as far as they can go.
The 2.2 ROMs are almost 100% perfect... so no reason to update.
2.3 ROMs make the most sense.

He doesn't seem to be. KF last update was two months ago, and his GB ROM hasn't been updated since Jan 10. I'm not complaining about it at all, but he seems to be spending a lot of time working on his Fascinate ROMs right now.
I think Conap, Workshed, Tazz, Tenzo, and Zach.xtr are the developers most actively working on Eris ROMs right now.
Not so fast, Ranger Rick! They're developing on MANY levels. The Eris is still a big deal, okay? Okay
And now there is another new dev on here..... ME ! Put up my 2.2 rom a few days ago !

Thanks for the feedback guys. I didn't mean to sound like a jack, but you're right about the roms. I would love to create my own or better yet take a rom and change to my liking. But don't know how. These roms you guys make are awesome but its like I always want more and always love new updates or new roms.
I'm good with PSCS4 but not coding or even trying to create a rom. I would love to learn and create my own or mod someone elses rom. How?
I think that first learning app creation might be a good place to start, get the basics of programming down. Then try to go deeper with a ROM. Idk, maybe that's just my own idea. I personally am kind of in the process od learning Java coding to make apps and have a few ideas for apps. The developer of one of my favorite apps called Ethereal Dialpad is helping me learn. He suggested Processing. Seems easy enough.

Check out this post bro, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756775
As long as you follow it step by step and don't do anything wrong it's actually kind of easy. Once I got everything installed and running it took me about 2 days to get my own 2.2 rom up and working (very fast and stable if I might add lol) which is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=963722
Now I'm working on a CM7 GingerBread rom for the Eris which will hopefully be done by the end of this week. Main thing you need to do is download the Oracle Virtual Machine and install Ubuntu on it. That first link I posted tells you how to do everything ! Try it out man, gotta start somewhere ! If you need any help with making yours, just let me know and I'll help to the best of my abilities !
Great news!

this is great news and I am glad to read this! My Eris was my first Android phone and I am glad to see it is still being developed for! yeah!
The Eris is still alive according to Droid Life's article. We might get an OTA update. AWESOME. I still love my phone and love creating icons and putting ideas on it. Its just that every other phone is getting more attention and the Eris is in the back burner.
I'm still keeping mine.

What advanced knowledge of this platform, I find digging thru this forum an impossibility. I have a Samsung Vibrant with stock FroYo 2.2 and am suffering terrible lag. It's beyond me why this is allowed to continue by the vendor.
So if I want a new ROM and/or Kernel to fix the major lag problem, I'm left wondering which is the best.
Well you kinda have to decide which type of rom that you'd want to try to use. If you want the stock rom I recommend installing the Bali kernel...it's fixed a lot of issues and gives great speed and battery life which is what I'm using.
Hopefully, you have rooted your phone before doing anything.
Bali Kernel Rocks for Froyo.
You can even try CM7 or MIUI Gingerbread ROMs.
We stopped relying on Samsung ages ago for providing any further updates.
If you want the best experience from your phone, you're going to have to take risks. But its nothing since this phone is technically "brickproof". Try installing a ROM besides Froyo, like GB or maybe a ROM that's Froyo but with different themes and tweaks, I just can't use stock 2.2 anymore lol.
Stupid Samsung and TMobile don't give a rat's a$$ about our phones or the Lag, and once they announced there will be no GB release, many devs have disappeared (though there are some new ones who inherited phones showing up now too )
For your first custom ROM...I wouldn't go with GB - it's not for beginners.
For 2.2 without the lag and some extra tweaks, try Project V - but there are lots of great ROMs out there that will help you ditch the Lag + a whole lot more. I know people who are still running Nero and Axura without problems - so you can probably just find a rom - look at the release date, and start reading the forum posts after that date. There's plenty in the noob stickies about how to root, most ROMs still provide install instructions.
Though - there are things like update of the Market, etc. - that you will need to allow extra time for during your "settling" periods...
i agree with the poster above, root your device and flash the bali 1.8.6 capped kernel. that'll convert your file system to ext4 and you'll be rocking. no need for the custom roms unless you're really adventurous.
While there is no need for custom roms I still think that you should try bionix 1.3.1 or project-v by edt both froyo roms to get a taste of what we in the vibrant community have and appreciate everyday
Bionix 1.3.1 has countless themes and project-v is by far imho the best 2.2 rom with the best speed and battery life and its always been what I fall back on when gb gives me problems. Also flash the trigger theme with it, it'll look better and bali kernel for battery

When did they announce there would be no more updates for the Vibrant. I don't remember hearing anything about that. I've given up hope that there will be, but I haven't heard anything officially.

For a first rom I would suggest something form sombionix. He was the best dev ever on this platform, and the roms are pretty much stupid proof, and more reliable than stock. anything from nero v3 to bionix 1.3 are all solid. You just need to take the way back machine and look as far back as 2009 to find them. Though his last rom thread keeps getting bumped as its just amazing and everyone keeps using it.

Well...since I only have it based on what I've seen/heard here, I should rephrase:
"Once whatever event, whether official or otherwise, occurred that caused some devs and other XDA members to commonly believe that there won't ever be an official GB release for the Vibrant..."

I know that its a noobish question but i really want to know that if any 1 can port official ICS to the vibrant from s3 or any other device....i just wanted to ask this because vibrant was updated to 2.2 only but then explodingboy70 a very nice developer ported I9000 official 2.3.6 to the vibrant from galaxy s I9000 i know that they are different devices so it must be very hard for him but he did it with additional features(if interested you can read the details in the link) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1258224 so why cant we port official ICS from any device to the vibrant
Why need official? AOKP and CM9 are tons better.

these guys are building such great roms of ics vibrant then why cant they port official ics to the vibrant and vibrant can handle ics easily because we have already seen it....roms like ics passion and gummy run very smoothly on vibrant and vibrant has the capability of handling ics...but i think then its battery ill drain alilfast

I'm sorry, but are you insane?
ALL of these ICS ROMS are great. If you think Passion is smooth, think about it like this. Passion was last updated MARCH 3rd. It's June 8th right now.
Although I respect neo for his work, he abandoned that ROM.
Try something else. ICS ROMS do not have bugs, the only bug that I know of that is common is probably the 911 bug, or GPS.
Do you think Porting over an "official" version will remove those bugs?
Anyways, I give you TWO options.
1) Go flash a good ICS ROM and enjoy it.
2) get your ass on Froyo and stay there.
If you REALLY want the same damn thing we already have, go find a script its in the dev. section which will let you port I9000 ROMS with ease.
