I've been using the Skype app modified to work on 3g with my Nexus for a while now, messages and voice both work fine for it. But when trying it on my Mytouch 4g, it can't log me in. Is anyone able to log in with Skype? And are there any decent Skype alternatives?
I tried Skype but it would only let me make video calls over wifi. Not 4g. I use Tango as my alternative most of my friends have it so it works out.

You can not make any video calls using skype on anyphone other than N900. so how come you are able to make them on MT4G
skype for MT4G will work over WIFI and 3G
This version of skype will work with any android phone over wifi and 3g, there is just one flaw, make sure you call the other person on skype as receiving calls on 3g would be charged by skype

I am curious as well. In the N900 you have options to call with ot without video. I have not seen that in any Android version of Skype. BTW, I think i heard someone mentioning that the thing from the fruit company has now a version of Skype that does video.
I don't understand why is taking Skype so long to release a video call version for other OSes. My N900 is over a year old and the video works quite well even when it is not WiFi.
I use skype everyday for (skype>skype) (skype>phone) and (phone>skype) and have no issue on wifi or data. Which version are you currently running that your having this problem on?

Noticed the skype app runs ok, but doesn't like the microphone input, sounds overdriven and noisy, unusable. I have all EQ and noise reduction setting off.
This was in a quiet environment.
Hope its just a minor tweak needed, the test call receive audio was excellent.
I observed this too.
Mine too. Hope someone reports this so they will fix it.

Skype Devs... help!
Skype is unusable for me as well due to this.
Skype is absolutely not usable for me. Other party only hears noise and nothing else. Waiting for a fix ASAP coz this is one of the main features I been looking for.
Does anyone know if there are plans to fix Skype on the atrix? This is a pretty major screw up on their part...
Has anyone tried Skype with the second microphone disabled?
I just got off the phone with Motorola tech support and their answer is that they don't support Skype and suggested using Qik instead. Doesn't seem like they plan on making any fixes for it as of now.

And how can we do that?
In settings / call settings / noise suppression.

Does not help.
In fact ALL VOIP apps i tried simply do not work.
Motorola really messed this up. i tried cSipsimple, spidroid, fring, tango, Skype, line2....nothing works like it should.
Has anyone tried using a microphone through the headphone jack? This way we can find out where the error is.
have downloaded skype, pretty dumb that i am unable to make calls over hspa+, whenever i try to make a call it states:
"IN THE UNITED STATES, YOU CAN ONLY MAKE SKYPE CALLS OVER WIFI" anyway to remove this?
Did not experience any of the background noise yet, the device is fairly new, trying to find out info myself to help others out, will follow up on any info i find out.
Re: Skype audio distorted on Atrix
I have tried with the NR turned off which should stop the second mic. No difference. Interestingly the Audio Tool app has an oscilloscope that shows seriously overdriven input- noise and clipping. Mirrors what I hear in test calls to my voice mail via Skype. If Qik works, but Skype does not, it must be how the app is accessing the inputs.
no update on this post in several days. do we know of any more updates? i am assuming Skype is fixing something and will come out with an update soon?
any time frame of this update?

It is not a skype problem. it is a Motorola software problem as all VOIP apps on the market simply don't work on the Atrix.
Any application that is trying to access the sound drivers is having issues on this phone.

i guess i stand corrected. thank you for pointing this out to me.
is there an update in the future that we could be expecting?
This drives me nuts. I need skype so bad.
Not just Skype, Basically ALL VOIP apps aren't working because of how Motorola changed the api for the mic. Qik is the ONLY one that works.
Motorola acknowledge the problem and Motorola has to fix this ASAP!

Hello.. My wife has a samsung galaxy s vibrant, with a front facing camera, when she opens the dialer, she has the option to click on video call for video. I just bought a motorola atrix and it does not have the same, and they tell me to use tango or another third party app. I am confused, does the atrix not support video calling through the cell phone network ? Whe she tried to video call me it fails...
Can someone clarify please.
You would need to be over wifi on the atrix. T-mobile is the only company that let's you do video calls with out wifi. Also, she uses what's called qik. If you don't have qik on the atrixs then you would need to use a 3rd party app such as tango. I believe through that specific app you both would need to be on wifi. Hope that helps.

Use Tango, QIK is just not as stable and it doesn't work well on the Vibrant FFC
You both should have a tango account (free) then you can open Tango and just call, It will take about 15-30 secs to make video connection after it hooks up in the call (Faster if both of you are on Wi-fi). Then talk away and oogle at your wife, girlfriend, pet Aardvark...etc. (assuming the Aardvark has a tango account too).
I use it quite a bit with my wife it is kinda cool. And, I solely use it over 3G and it works in my area pretty well without lag.
Hope that helped.
Thanks guys, But what does her phone use when she clicks video call instead of call when normally dialing a number in the default dialer? thats what I am trying to use with her, video over 3g, I pay 5$/month for video calling, but i dont think my motorola supports it. im trying to avoid 3rd party so i can use it without wifi, and without running up data..
I returned my atrix already and waiting for another galaxy S, not just because of video, I did not like motoblur, and also, for some odd reason, when i try to voice dial over bluetooth, I have to unlock the phone first.. which i find very stupid, i dont want to touch my phone when im using my headset.
Just to add, I did try tango, and I think its not supported on the atrix because it all worked, but the voice was so choppy it sounded like slow motion, video did work.
I also tried qik, but for some reason, It wont call my wife, says she doesnt have it, and she cant call me, for the same reason, altho we are both signed on..
Thanks guys.

you MAY want to try and check out/ talk in the Atrix section of this forum... We vibrant users may not know as much about the phone as the people who actually have it.
Ask them if there's a rom/app that would let you do video chats.
I used Grove IP and download it on the marketplace and used my google voice account to log in. Now you can make and received call from your flyer as long as you have a wifi connection.
Just wanted to share something to the community.
can you then pair a bluetooth headset?
thanks for the find

Yes that did work. Now is there a way to receive calls from a cellphone calling you from Grove IP?
I use my Skype account and it also works well.
I know there are ROMs that enable the Bluetooth functionality, but is there a flashable zip to do the same thing for those of us who'd rather stay with the stock ROM?
Be sure to change your settings in Google voice. Don't have it forward to any number have it forward to Google talk or email that way if anyone calls your Google voice number it rungs your tablet with grooveip. Wired headsets are confirmed working. I used the standard htc headset with the inline mic that came with every android htc phone I purchased and the work perfectly for you hearing the caller and the caller hearing you.
Thankyou I was having trouble getting it to receive calls.

No, you have to root, but you can keep the stock ROM , just rooted. Just to be clear bluetooth works on totally stock, but not bluetooth headset. There is a small mod to one text file you do once rooted that enables headset profile for bluetooth
Just want to know if it uses the sim or google server to call?

Doesn't need a SIM if you have wifi its a VOIP
There is actually a very active forum thread with the developers of GrooveIP here.

I tried numerous things that I can think of but when I dial out from Google Talk, it keeps asking for Mobile Carrier...
u tried using SIPdroid?
or cisp?
or?

I'll have to look into those ones, I installed Tango video calling, and I can see the other callers video, but no mic or video on my end. I wasn't expecting it to work, and I'm ok with it not working just yet, hopefully it will get fixed when full release comes. Other than that, this thing rocks!

I used Groove IP to call my self, I could hear my first word, then it went dead. Def has potential in coming CM updates.
Same thing here
Gtalk with video - video works but no sound from to
Skyupe video - neither video nor audio work (audio seem to start OK)
Sipdroid setup with Google voice - calls go thru but no sound from tp

I used grooveIP with google voice disabling the 3g/4g option and also enabling google chat under GV settings. I was able to make a call but the sound was either delayed or not there. I can see this working with updated versions of CM. I can also receive calls but same sound issues.
I've tried sipdroid Cm7 but audio doesn't work.. Hopefully cm9 will be a different story.

just use gtalk, tango or skype. lots of options. all are great.
Not sure what you mean by "standard video call" but without an app you wont get far. Tango, Skype, Yahoo, and Gtalk. They all work over 3G but Sprint's 3G is slower than a constipated turd so its better over wifi.

Video Call service is available from any operator of 3G mobile networks (not in the U.S. in my opinion). In addition to the button "call" for 3G phones should be a button "call with video." All Win Mobile devices with a front camera, symbian nokia phones and other 3G phones with front camera has support for video calls. Please watch these videos:
On Nokia youtube.com/watch?v=yiVWtOd-vDw
On Samsung Galaxy S youtube.com/watch?v=2lbpCJE1lcY

That's all pointless in the end. We don't all have the exact same phones. That's why Skype or other popular ones are best. Giving us more options. For every user on all devices.

Your own words I can say that Skype is pointless in the end. Because not all of my friends run Skype for the day. But 3g video call is a real replacement of traditional voice calls. If the subscriber does not support video call, then video call switches to traditional voice mode. Therefore, 3G video calls and video calls via Skype is a completely different services. sorry for my english
