So, I've been flashing a variety or ROMs, Bionics and Eugene's Froyos. All has been well until recently, when I noticed I was missing a bunch of my Google contacts. I normally just let them restore in the first sync. Somehow a bunch got wiped out, not found in Contacts online, nor on the Vibrant. Also noticed a bunch of Contact photos were mismatched.
Nandroid restored a flash or two back, and there they are. On the first sync, they disappear again. I had hoped that the cloud would recognize the phone contacts as newer, and save them, but no luck.
Any way to force the Google servers to let the phone overwrite what's there, so I can get my contacts back in both places?
I can hit Airplane mode after a sync and keep the contacts on the phone, and maybe back up to Kies, if that would do any good...
Thoughts, suggestions?

My friend received her Eris 2.1 OTA update from stock 1.5 today. She tells me half her contacts (previously synced from her last VZW phone, a two year old Envy) are gone, as well as a bunch of other settings, apps, etc.
Anyone else having these issues as well? She's none too happy, specifically about the losing the contacts. Any work arounds? I recall a similar thing happening to the Droids when they received their first OTA update...something about exporting and re-importing the contacts?
TIA!
I didn't get the OTA because of root but as long as her contacts were synced with her google account it shouldnt have touched anything with her contacts that wouldnt have been restored when she signed in.
actually I have a coworker who got the update and all of her contacts restored except for the ones which she had assigned a ringtone to (mostly family). She wound up having to reenter the contacts because they disappeared from the gmail site also. I made sure to export my gmail contacts so that if something screwed up I could restore them back on line.
None of mine were corrupt. In fact, my phone kept everything that was on it, including wallpapers. All ringtones that were assigned were still attached.
thanks guys. a call to VZW cleared it up, she entered some code into the dialer, reset the phone, all contacts except a couple were restored. most apps were uninstalled however, as well as phone customizations. kinda a PITA but it's back up and running so it's all good. thanks for the responses!
Did a full nandbackup and have checked back with my original eris 2.1 which has my most current google contact list and my stored text messages.
When i check the last time i google sync'd my contacts to the exchange server (on original eris 2.1 setup) it says 9/29/10 (today) but when I flash my new kaosfroyo the contact list does not include any additions ive made since i purchased the phone.
All contacts were always saved in the google contact list in an effort to backup data on a server instead of just the phone.
Would the best bet be to wipe the ROM and flash again and try to let google re-sync? Or is this an issue I will need to take up with Verizon (for the longest time it would say "this service is temp unavailable" in the sync options)?
Also, is it possible to have my text messages imported to my new ROM? Nandbackup apparently would not do this-possibly another sync issue?
Btw if this question has been asked I apologize - tried to search through these forums quite a bit to no avail. Any help for a first poster would be much appreciated.
I would have thought if your contacts are "Google" contacts, re-syncing your Google account would bring them all back in.
As to importing SMS/MMS (i.e. text messages and those with pictures) into a freshly flashed ROM, yes you can import them. I do that all the time. I have Titanium Backup installed and before I flash a new ROM I backup SMS/MMS, browser bookmarks, and email account settings. Once you have TB installed, the item you will be looking for to backup for SMS/MMS is called something like "[SMS/MMS] Dialer Storage". In the old ROM, you open TB and backup this item. Flash the new ROM, install TB. Open TB, restore "Data Only" for Dialer Storage and then reboot your phone. Do not open messaging app before you reboot the phone. After the reboot, all your backed up SMS/MMS should be there. The same process works for me for browser bookmarks and email account settings. However, I am not sure but I think backing up the email account settings only works for those accounts which are configured through the stock mail app vice being configured via Menu --> Accounts & Sync.
A word about Titanium Backup: the paid version of the app is well worth the money.
Can you verify that your contacts were synced properly, perhaps going into Gmail and assuring that all your changes are there. If they aren't go back to 2.1, sync again then reflash KaosFroyo. If your changes are there then you could try re-flashing anyways (you may try to reboot and resync first). As far as text messages, I'm not aware of anyway to back them up directly, but they're are great apps that can backup all SMS to your gmail account. Hope this helps a little, good luck!
Just downloaded Titanium and backed up all sms (after a long struggle w/ the app not recognizing that I DID check the allow foreign apps setting)
Will reflash tonight and hope that Google kept everything in order
Thanks for the replies... ill let you know how it turns out tomorrow
Looks like my "sync contacts" with google never officially worked. When I went back to my original eris setup with my current contacts it reverted back to saying last sync 03/xx/10.
I let the phone attempt to sync for nearly 2 hours and still no data sent... I searched through the forums and came across a post saying to flash a new radio in order to establish the connection with google. Are there any better resolutions to this problem or is this the best option?
I am still working on getting titanium to backup my messages - everytime I create a backup with my original eris setup it gives me full backup (160 data apps including sms and mms) but when i flash my new rom it says all data and apps restored to OS yet I still don't have my old texts.

You could always use the contacts app on the phone to export a vcard of your contacts and import it via gmail. I had to do this with my brothers CDMA hero because it just absolutely would not sync with gmail, it would add contacts from gmail to the phone but not the other way around. After we exported as a vcard and imported into gmail manually it has brought down the contacts every time since.
Looked around and found a neat little trick that apparently resets google sync
I used the manage apps and cleared all data for my SMS/MMS dialer storage
Rebooted then reloaded my gmail account and the sync error vanished
f yes
Also downloaded SMS/MMS backup and restore - other than some duplicated messages I now have all my texts.
Yaaaay now I can enjoy my new ROM
This is a recurring problem. I have serveral contacts that just keep coming back no matter how many times I delete. I don't even have them on my google contacts list anymore. I will delete them and all is fine for a time and than it just comes back.
I believe that these are located on the phone somewhere and not as a result of google syncing because it is not on my googles list as mentioned above.
This is what I have done so far:
stoped sync (just in case)
deleted all contacts
backed up my google contacts (to be safe)
than re synced and all is well.
Than, sometime latter the same name duplicats appear. About 283 of them.
I even did the above again and powered on an off.
Does anyone know where on my phone these contacts are hiding and how I can delete them for good?
Do you use facebook and have contact sync enabled there? I had this problem on my last phone.
No, and at this time I am not syncing to anything. Ive been reading on the motorla forums about similar problems when tranfering contacts over from another phone. I had a BB. Some did a factory reset and it worked so I am trying to figure out how to do that now.
I backed everything up. Factory resetting now. I will update here shortly.
Final update. I did a factory reset and that seems to have worked. I imported goolge contacts back to google and synced phone and all correct contacts are there.
The only glitch I had was that when I hit factory reset i deleted all of my titanium back up files that were backed up to the photons mounted sd card. Not sure why..
Could you have copied them to your sim card?
I thougt thats where it was backed up to but latter on realized that it was backed up to the mounted sd card not mine. I just backed up again and made a copy on my sd card too so next time I have the back up in two places.
Hey XDA!
I have a rooted Samung Infuse with AT&T and am currently running ZEUS with few problems. I love this ROM but I am going to switch up and flash a newer ROM within the next few days. However, (back in January) before I got ZEUS, I went from the Stock ROM to MIUI and I used Titanium Backup to transfer all of my data. When I backed up contacts in the Stock ROM through Titanium and tried to restore them once I had MIUI, I kept getting force close messages that made the phone unusable because they were so frequent. I isolated the problem to be related with contacts and just deleted my saved contacts. The problem went away, but I ended up switching to ZEUS later, now with no contacts.
Anyway, I don't know if that was a random occurrence that happened only to me in my flashing process, but to avoid anything like that again, I'd like to be able to backup my contacts to Google. I've seen it mentioned several times here and on Google's site, but never did I find a how to or any sort of procedure. Can someone explain to me (as comprehensively as possible) how to backup my contacts to Google?
Any guidance or redirection would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot!

Actually, you only need to activate the sync option on Settings >Sync (or account settings, I dunno). All your contacts will be uploaded to your GMail account, and downloaded to your phone the next time
You can also make a manual backup, doing this:
Go to Phone >Contacts >press Menu key >Import/export >export contacts to SD. So, when you need your contacts, follow the same procedure, choosing now Import contacts from SD.

Thanks a lot! I tried every manner of playing with the settings possible. I had the account sync multiple times, but none of the contacts actually stored when I checked on a computer. I'm just gonna settle with the backups from Titanium, my SD card, and my Sim. No worries!
I've got an HTC Desire HD that's been rooted and have tried out several ROMs, the last couple have been ICS. I would like to stay with an ICS ROM but there seems to be an issue with contacts. I sync my contacts (and calendar) with Outlook via MyPhoneExplorer, Google isn't in the running here. On GB all is fine and both contacts and calendar go into a 'phone' memory. With ICS this 'phone' memory has gone and you have to sync with your gmail account locally. With ICS the calendar is fine but if I reboot the phone (it gets switched off most nights) this causes all contacts to disappear. I usually use Contapps as my contacts app but the stock People app also shows the same behaviour. Tried all the settings I can think of, and SEARCHED the forums (and further afield) so far, but still the same.
In all cases I've set up my Google account but then turned off ALL synchronisation, as I want to keep things local to my phone and PC. The calendar works fine, it's just contacts. I've checked with my gmail account online and it does NOT have copies of my contacts or calendar so it would appear that 'not syncing' is not the issue as my phone's calendar keeps it's data intact.
Also, call history doesn't seem to get deleted either but you obviously just get the phone number in each entry, with no contact details.
Using the stock People app to check (though other contact apps show the same lack of contacts!). I've tried 3 different ICS ROMs and at least two have shown the problem (the 3rd may have done but that was the first I installed and may not have checked). I've seen other comments both on xda and the wider interweb that indicate that I'm not the first to see this but there doesn't seem to be a consensus on the solution, if any.
Can anyone shed any light on the issue? Or at least have details on how Google changed contacts operations in ICS?
Oh, I know that I "could" sync with Google, but I don't want to. I know all the arguments for and against and I'm in the "against" camp on this one so comments along the 'just sync with Google' line aren't that useful. No disrespect to those that think differently ....

OK. More information. I've noticed that the contacts database file .... /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts2.db ... gets overwritten on the 2nd reboot. (File Manager tells me its a smaller file AND the timestamp gets updated). I've deleted ALL files in ... /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/ ... and they get re-created on a reboot but after syncing they still get overwritten on the 2nd reboot.
I've also tried to 'fix permissions' from ROM Manager but no change.
Anyone any clues as to what could be going on?
Ta.
Thought I'd sussed it. Did a factory reset, re-installed all my apps via Titanium Backup then used Rom Manager's 'fix permissions' (and rebooted obviously). Reinstalled my contacts and it took until the 3rd reboot before they disappeared again ... :crying: However, I now have a 'Me' profile I created and this does NOT get deleted. As the file is in the same directory and has the same permissions there has to be some boot process "amending" the contacts2.db file. But what the heck is it? Anyone point me to docs. that describe the supposed Android boot sequence?
