After installing wifi calling I noticed a serious decline in my battery life. As in, unplug phone at 8am, battery dead by 2pm. Used system panel to find out wifi calling uses 30% of the cpu even if you've neve opened it! !
I used titanium backup to freeze the app and that fixed my battery life.
Problem is, now I see rom builders including the app in their roms. I installed Team Whiskey's froyo rom and there it is, wifi calling taking all my battery life. Problem this time is I can't freeze the app! Can't even kill it. If you are a rom maintainer, please please please stop including this app! It is only marginly interesting, and it destroys our batteries

i use system panel and i also noticed it was constantly in the foreground n no way to end it
Since my phone has been unplugged on obsidian froyo, I haven't sent a text or call, wifi calling is connected, not a percent of the battery was used by this app according to the system battery use...
On my mytouch 4g the wifi calling is what gave me such better battery life...
Not sure what's wrong with yours but its not inherently a bad app at all

I haven't had it long enough to do any testing, but if you think about it wifi calling disables the cell radios altogether so wouldn't that help the battery life?

WiFi uses more battery than cell radios.
It is the #1 power drainer on my Macnut install. I froze it in Titanium Backup to "fix" the issue.

False. Using a strong Wi-Fi signal when available will save you tons of battery over the regular cell. The probably with the Wi-Fi app is that it is always running and uses TONS of CPU. I'm talking upwards of 30% at a time.

I'm not referring to using the wifi calling. I do not have it enabled - wifi is turned off altogether, but wifi calling app is chewing through the cpu, killing the battery.
I'm not having this problem using Obsidian. It's likely not the app itself - may depend on the ROM you're using.
I noticed it taking up 30% of my CPU even when I wasn't using it. There doesn't seem to be a way to disable it either. So, I uninstalled it for now.
I am not having battery problem either, in fact I believe it is helping to get better battery life. Although, I am thinking the wifi calling is not very mature yet. I tried it out few times, and I had problem of people not hearing me well on the other side while they sounded great on my side. Is anybody else having this problem?

I started off with Obsidian and noticed it was the top power drainer then too.
I don't mean to hijack, but does wifi calling use minutes...if so what's the point unless you have poor coverage at home?

it does use minutes. point is if you dont have cell coverage, you can use wifi for calls instead.

As I said in my original post, I am using obsidian. Have you actually checked using system panel that the app is no chewing cpu cycles ?
If you want to remove it then remove it. I dont think anyone is stopping you. If you dont know how, read the sticky in general.

I think this may be the cause for some battery drain issue some people here are experiencing. This means when your phone is suppose to be "sleeping" It's not. Here is more of a detail graph view of the Wifi Calling app through the day:

Guys the problem is that Wifi calling is using CPU when it's disabled and wifi is OFF.. Not while using the thing. Thats something different from what we are talking about.
Sometimes a reboot fixes it but it acts up again after a few mins and use even more cpu.

The image below is of a scan I did in WiFi analyzer. Scan frequency of 1 second.
As you can see its very frustrating. And its not like I have a poor signal.
I have searched everywhere and tried many things. (Turning WiFi performance on, messing with the channels)
No dice.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

No, no this has to deal with the roms we download. I was on Cm7 and it constantly dropped when i was on my phone surfing the web. Switched to nightley 150+ #build and it did not drop on me. I recently Switched to MIUI and it has started to drop on me, this is frustrating when you need to download a rom.
My only guess is it has to deal with the roms we download. Before anyone says anything no, my wifi is on a NO SLEEP policy, it not likes to drop the wifi while im surfing the web.

It's not the rom. I had the same problem with my EVO3d before and after rooting and trying multiple roms. I tried a different router and haven't had a single problem. It is clearly and issue between the router and the phone. Now I just need to figure out why they don't get along. Ive heard about switching channels but haven't had a chance yet.

Notes + im on a HTC Increíble. My router cost me 139$, ive never had a problem vía wifi nor on ethernet. This is strictly something on these roms, trust me ive looked into this alot. The only conclusion is that..
If you think about, did your signal drop with your stock rom? Not mine.. Until i Switched to Cm7 i randomly have connection issues? Lol

You keep mentioning cm7. I'm assuming u do not have an evo3d correct? And my stock phone straight out of the box and after rooting and flashing a custom rom had the same problem with one of my routers. It works just fine with other routers. Also the signal doesnt fade or drop like with my og EVO, it simply disconnects then reconnects 30 seconds later.
Edit: just realized you said u have an incredible. Also no other phone or device, including my old EVO, has had this problem. There must be a setting within my router that isn't playing nice because it is the only router my EVO3d has a problem with.

On my OG evo the only time i had problem with wifi was on cm7 but that was just weak signal. Nothing like this. If you like at my pic in the first post it is scanning every second. so its not like its disconnecting for 30 seconds. Which is weird because it says im connected the whole time.

Hmm, that's odd I am having the same problem but only its not my router.
But yeah, I'm usually on for 30 minutes to an hour and it drops for 20-30 seconds. Disrupting my downloads, I have heard there is a program for I think what you need axe. You said it's refreshing every second? If I'm right I remember seeing you could change your refresh rate somewhere to save battery life too.
So we have the same problem but different issues.
Hmm...
Edit------ My old router was terrible and did not want to cooperate with any of these devices I use. So I bought a 139$ Router and works perfect.

When i run a speed test the ping is very quick (~50ms)
But once the download test starts it just dies. It freezes on a number then goes to "network communication issues"
Hmm, yeah it might be a router problem for you guys.
When I do that it finishes, I'm just having wifi issues.
Mine occur only in certain roms as stated above, with miui and cm7. Nightley though worked, I didn't have any drops. I'm thinking about switching to a sense 3.0 here soon to see how it stands up.

I've had similar issues with stock and custom ROM's on my old Hero. I started having similar problems with my 3VO, so the first thing I did was reset the wireless settings on my router to default and then redo the SSID, change the channel and power setting, and of course - change the password.
I haven't had a problem ever since.
I had the problem on my Stock ROM. Actually it only showed up when connecting to my N router, but did not happen when connecting to my G router. However my issue I had to turn off the radio and then back on before it would reconnect. I downloaded something called WiFi fixer. This fixed my issues completely. Hmmm, might have to play with some different kernels and turn off the fixer and see what happens.
Check router firmware netgear.com/support. They have WiFi issues on 3700 maybe yours too

GPSd would be the GPS Daemon. Means your GPS is active? Do you use Cerebus/Find my Droid/Samsung mobile services? If any of these are active and tracking your device then that might explain it?
I am getting the same issue, I was using gamerzrom rom since a week without issues, yesterday the problem started and the battery is sucked so fast..
Do you have Mobile Defense installed? Using the BetterBatteryStats app it appears that for me the drain is related to a part of Mobile Defense. It was listed as "ars" related to the Mobile Defense process which caused a 55m wakelock & spiked gpsd to use a steady 25% CPU.
In Mobile Defense settings I disabled all backup options and checked all boxes under the Malware scanning preferences. I haven't seen the issue surface in 2 days.

Yesterday My I9300 also has the same problem, and I didn't enable the Samsungdive function.
but I know that it should relate to GPS. below is what i do.
1. I empty all GPS software buffer.
2. Switch off phone,
3. Take out SIM card,
4. Switch on phone, disable wifi,
5. Open the GPS software then search GPS signal,
6. after GPS get your position, then empty the GPS software buffer again.
..............Then the GPSD never drain your battery.
I think this is a bug, the GPS is always searching for the GPS signal so that drain the battery.
As much as I love this phone I'm really starting to hate it. When I first got the phone I had problems with the wi-fi dropping and when you wake the phone it would come back on along with the awful multi-tasking recent apps. After the OTA it doesn't seem to do that anymore.
Now what it does it will show my wi-fi is connected full strength but I go to use the browser, an app, play store whatever and nothing. Just sits there forever no internet connection. I have to toggle wi-fi on and off for it to work again. I use wi-fi all day at work & while I'm home obviously so this issue affects me a lot. The router is a WRT54GL running Tomato which I have been running for years it's been ROCK SOLID on all my devices (including evo3D, original evo, laptop, etc) I just recently rooted and am running Stock With Goodies part of my reason for rooting I thought the wi-fi would maybe have been fixed but same issue on this rom as well.
It's so frustrating to pick up your phone to do something and have zero connectivity so you have to restart your app your trying to use cause it gets errors. I have tried everything I can think of, setting it to 2.4 only, high performance, changing channels on the router (again other devices work perfect). I don't know what to do about it anymore, I could bring it in to Sprint which I will absolutely not bring to them unless absolute less resort usually I know more then them anyway. They are just gonna tell me it works fine and give the phone back so I came here looking for some advice. Not really sure where to go from here but I can't stand having the phone like this. Does anyone have the same issue as me or is it possible my radio is bad? Speed are signal levels are just fine when it's working. Also it seems the longer the phone sits in sleep the more likely it is to happen.
Try going to WiFi settings. Then menu that and click "Best WiFi performance" that solved it for me. Running viper 4g and had a consistent problem with the WiFi dropping and reconnecting or not connecting at all.

How does this affect your battery? I'm trying to figure out what is even causing this issue if it's just the router, my phone only or what.
Best wifi performance will seriously impact your battery. It prevents your phone from sleeping properly. I found that I got an extra 10 hrs of life when I disabled best performance when I was still running stock.

Yea I'm starting to think so as well, I don't have 3G problems actually the 3G radio I think is pretty good. I don't have the drop out problems anymore just after the phone being idle on wi-fi for a while I have to toggle it on and off for it to actually work. My signal levels and speeds are totally find when it's connected it's just letting it sit sleeping for a while is when I have the trouble. Think this has been discussed before. The latest ota was supposed to fix the WiFi dropping, so if you have that and still experience problems then it's hardware related.
My first LTE dropped WiFi for 3g constantly. No matter what I did it kept happening. Finally took it back after I messed w gwallet too many times and got secure element error. New one doesn't drop WiFi at all. Also haven't updated to newest ota.
Ask me about my ability to annoy complete strangers!
I have newest OTA I don't get the disconnection issues any more since then but rather it staying connecting but not being able to get online after the phone sits idle. I have another person that has the exact same issue with me having to cycle wi-fi to get it working. I'm starting to think maybe it's something to do with Tomato but I have never had issues with it on any other device.
Every tomato Rom I used before was awesome and never had issues either.
Noticed that when I wake my phone it doesn't want to connect on WiFi. 3g disconnects a lot on bad signal too.
WiFi isn't as bad when I use juice defender. Mainly because it reconnects all radios when awakened though.
Ask me about my ability to annoy complete strangers!
I've recently installed Jelly Bean (LS8) on a family member's S2 - and they've been having some trouble with it. I've attached a screenshot with the battery usage (it has <30 minute screen usage if that matters).
This type of drain occurs over Wi-Fi and 3G.
I've ruled out:
- The age of the battery (it's one month old).
- The cellular signal (always 3 - 4 bars over UMTS).
- The Bluetooth radio (I've turned it off and the same battery drain still occurs).
It's also worth noting that the process "Android OS" made the phone stay awake for 5 out of the 10 hours the phone was switched on. I've turned off Google Now and all geo-location services. The Wi-Fi arrows ALWAYS seem to be blinking. However, previously on ICS 4.0.4, leaving Wi-Fi on would not cause any such issues. What could be the problem?

Post battery details. No betterbattery stats app?
Could be the Media Scanner issue.

And to add to this: download and use cpu spy to see if your device is deep sleeping
don't think so, android OS was active 5 hours out of 10.

Yeah, I was thinking that BBS might help too. I'll get a log tomorrow and post it here.

Post Kernel Wakelocks & Partial wakelocks so I don't have to read the log.

You could try Watchdog task manager which will tell you if a particular process is using an unusually high proportion of your CPU resource.
If you find it is "Android Media Process" then try installing "Rescan Media Root" which will allow you to disable the scanning process. I assume you're rooted...
Have a look at other resource hogs while you're there - I found Facebook to be one of the other culprits.
I have attached two relevant screenshots from BBS. The wakelock "wlan_rx_wake" seems to be the main issue here, but I have no clue what's causing it. If it's important, there was pretty much only one partial wakelock present, ActivityManager-Launch, and for 30 seconds only.
Thanks for the help all, it's much appreciated.

Wlan is wifi related.
Reboot, leave the device sit for 15-30 mins and post partial wakelocks since boot.
As requested. Battery drain meter is buggy so that can be ignored.

That's a hell of a drain you got there (not showing tho).
Try disabling fast dormacy and google now.
Focus on partial wakelocks since boot instead of unplugged (reboot your device and post a screenshot 20 min after that).

Got the same issue and went back to ics 4.0.4 finally.
This ROM seems not to be for everyone. Made a full wipe bevor and after flashing. Re-flashed, powered the battery up to 100% and flashed it. At first it was worse than yours than i made it to last 21 hours till phone died. Installed BBS to find out what's going on but couldn't identify a single problem. Android OS used to much power. Was awake to long. Screen uses to much power as well. Seems to be a totaly f... up installation. Tried it 3 or 4 times but nothing went better significantly.
Hope you will have more luck
Nicolas
Google Now is already off.
Here are the Partial Wakelocks, since boot this time.

You're good there.
What is it that you're using bluetooth for?
Car pairing. I've tried with it off, and the same battery drain occurs.
I'm going to try connecting the phone to an access point with no Internet connection and see if the drain still occurs. If not I'm gonna guess it's something on my network or a remote server trying to initiate a connection... Otherwise it's something on the phone that's causing the issue.
I'll try using Shark to capture the packets, I may be able to find something there.

NB: The device received an OTA today. Too early to tell if it's made a difference.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
On my Siyah 6b4 kernel, withstands about 40h, sometimes wifi, 3g, I recomended flash.
I don't want to jump the gun, but it seems as if the OTA fixed the issue. No more Android OS "stay awake" / excessive wlan_rx_wake. I'll give it another day and then confirm back here.

Drain
Dear friends,
I had CM 9 with syhia kernel and my battery last 14/15 hrs of real world usage. I was happy.
I updated to cm10.1 qnd that was stupid... Really broken software.
So I wipe again and flash the omega rom based on ls8. Not more than 9 hrs. So i flashed dorimanx kernel 7.45 and with default profile I was able to hit 11 hrs of moderate use. Using battery profile got me around 13 but the phone behave like a htc hero...
I will see tomorrow and post BBS but in the mean time I would like to know if, in your opinion, this huge drain would get better using a neat sammy rom with a custom kernel.
Thank you
I have no idea what's going on. I'm in San Diego and there back in PA. I'm running out of ideas why the DNA is doing it. I have a modified S3 myself so I got no issues. But I had her download Better Battery Stats and WLD and this is what I got from her.
She does have the new 2.06 update.
Fast Reboot - Unchecked
Google Maps Location Reporting is turned off

Sorry to hear about the battery life. I personally have had amazing battery life. My phone was at 14% when I went to sleep and woke up to 7%. Not sure what the issue is. Connectivity is the only thing that stands out. I doubt she had bad reception. Any apps she's downloaded that could be using her connection more than it needs to? Only other thing could be is the battery. Does she leave it plugged in all night?

Well she was getting great battery life before 2.06 I think. And I know my house, the area is quite strong for a connection. I barely got signal in my room and I got better battery life even with RILJ tripping hardcore. Not sure about the apps. But She plugs it in before she goes to bed, and its by her side all night. So it's not left on the charger all night

Hmm. Could have been a bad update? I hate doing a factory reset but it sounds like it might come to that :/ before that when did the issue start? Maybe we can correlate an app download to the start of the issue?

It could be a bad update, but without me actually on the phone myself kinda hard to pin it down. Before the update she only installed a few apps. She already uninstalled 3 of them which she never used. I just looked the apps via Google Play online account and nothing looks suspicious and those are all the same apps she used on the Inc2 before she got the DNA

My guess the update didn't go as planned. Tell her to move all her files to her pc and do s factory reset. Hopefully that corrects the issue. All else fails. She could let the bootloader redo the update and hope that was the case.

Are you turning off data? Perhaps facebook is keeping your phone constantly awake(looks like it) and that kills your battery. First post a picture of the "other" category in better battery stats and get one power guard and post a screenshot of the "statistics" page.
Download gsam and look at what's taking up a big %. Somethings keeping your phone from going into deep sleep.

Yes I had her turn data off. The only time she is on 4G/3G is on the road. Her work place and home is all WiFi use. She is charging the phone so I'll have to get it for tomorrow.

I'll tell her to get GSAM. I even have DS Battery Saver running on it and whatever is running is bypassing DS
Here is the GSAM. Hasn't been running long but the kernel is doing something

And gmail seems pretty high.

Alright I told her to do that. Gmail is quite odd. I think the damn 2.06 update went bad but i can't be sure
EDIT: Here it is. Well the first one was a joke. My mother is a funny one. I suspected the worse. msm_hsic_host. Any way I can fix it without teaching my mom how to root or do other various mods?
Looks like she has bad reception. Go to settings, about and network to see the signal strength. msm_hsic wakelocks happen when you have a bad signal, ril also causes wakelocks. This is probably the issue(90% sure).

msm_hsic only relating to the S4 pro chipset or all phones? Cause I have very little signal where I sit in my room and I don't get anything msm, just a screw ton of rilj on a Galaxy S3

Try turning off "fastboot", make sure GPS and Bluetooth are "off"
Just some info you can take a screen shot by pressing the power button and the home button. Press power then quickly press the home key. Just thought that would help ya out with your captures.

Alright. I knew about it but wasn't sure if it came stock on the rom. And she already gets confused enough why I'm asking her to do and stuff.
