[Q] Lagfix. when to disable when not to - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey friends.
first of all, sorry for the noob questions. there are just a few things that aren't clear to me.
It says that when flashing a rom that includs a voodoo fix - the voodoo fix and any other lagfix should be disabled first.
there are things that aren't clear to me.
if I move from a rom with voodoo fix to another rom with voodoo fix - is disabling also required?
what if I have a voodoo-rom and I run the voodoo-disable patch? will the rom stop working?
if I move from a stock rom to a voodoo-rom is flashing just done normally? I don't have to do anything prior?
I am afraid of bricking and don't know much about this voodoo patch
thanks

A general rule - ALWAYS uninstall lagfix when you are flashing a new ROM unless the ROM tells you specifically, yes XXX lagfix IS compatible with the ROM.
Don't ever assume.
In fact, the best way to flash a new ROM is to Odin back to stock and start clean.

Thanks
First all all, thanks for the answer.
I'm pretty scared to use ODIN since I've read too many posts by people who got bricked.
I did a backup with clockwork recovery but from what i understand it doesn't restore the kernel when one restores the image.
I didn't notice a stock 2.1 kernel in a zip format anywhere.

Voodoo and roms

I tried searching to get s concrete answer but I didn't have any luck. I currently have voodoo but its disabled. Its it safe to use ron manager to flash an alternate rom, also is it safe to do the latest fascinate update? Thanks.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
Yes, both should be safe but you should do a Nandroid before you do anything, just in case (which is possible since Voodoo is disabled).
OK, I think I understand how Voodoo reacts with ROMs but I really wish someone would make a really descriptive post. Here is my question:
I know I can't make a nandroid backup when using Voodoo but is there any other limitations? Can I flash a new ROM? Can I use my phone like normal? Can I flash a new kernal?
Flashing ROMs should not be affected by Voodoo. Flashing kernels also should not be a problem so long as the kernel supports Voodoo!
If you flash a non-Voodoo kernel without disabling Voodoo very bad things will happen.

[Q] Odin back to Stock or just disable Voodoo or ...?

I am just wondering if whether or not I should or need to be going back to stock when installing new ROMs or if I should just disable Voodoo or if I even need to do that.
It seems with newer ROMs the updates dont require you to disable Voodoo, just flash over. But what if I want to go from Bionix V to Auxura 2.2.9.0? Do I need to go back to stock and then root/flash? Or will just disabling Voodoo work? Or should I just flash and go?
I have searched and see different ways to do things but not a clear answer on if I should be doing that or if its necessary when going between ROMs.
Also if I have overlooked a thread on this I think it should be stickied or in the NOOB guide.
Thanks.
Your going to get different opinions on this. If your going to flash the newest version of the rom your on then there is really no need to odin. If your going to a.completely different rom then yes go ahead and odin. Of course its never a bad idea to start fresh.
Powered by Axura with a dash of Voodoo
If you Odin back to stock you lose all information including titanium backup right? You really are starting from scratch if you do this correct?

No. You will still have your files when you odin.
It's safer to disable voodoo then odin then flash custom rom. Well that's what i do, though you can odin without disabling voodoo.

Thanks for the quick reply! I am still new to loading custom ROMs on this. I am coming from the HD2 which was the easiest phone to load custom ROMs on I think.
Another tidbit of advice, if you're updating a rom (e.g. going from Axura 2.2.7.2 to Axura 2.2.9.0) you don't need to disable Voodoo.
Even if you're changing roms (e.g. TW Bionix-V to Axura 2.2.9.0) in theory, you shouldn't need to disable Voodoo, I've done it successfully. This works because both are running Voodoo v5.x and up, and both roms have Voodoo enabled off the bat.
Some older roms running Voodoo V4.x CANNOT be flashed over each other and Voodoo must be disabled before flashing.
There's no real harm in disabling Voodoo and flashing over it, but if you forget, the worse that's going to happen is you'll have to odin back to stock.
I have never odin to stock before applying another rom and have not had any issues. I always disable voodoo and wipe/factory reset before applying a new rom. I think odining to stock to apply a different rom is waste of time and not needed. Look at the directions of installing Flagship and that's the best way to go from rom to rom.

[Q] I'm new and wanna update to KB5 how to root and voodoo?

As the topic,I' new...How to root, now I'm KA6,and I'm afraid that if update,my root will don't work and I know that must disable the voodoo, but how can I voodoo again next?Waiting for answer....Thank You...
update to a new rom in most case won't require you to disable voodoo or reroot. If you have ClockworkRecovery and root, you can install new roms easily. Just follow instructions.
In most cases, this is Put the zip rom file in SDCARD, reboot to recovery, wipe data, install the zip file and reboot.

Agreed! most ROMs will come with voodoo enabled so disabling of voodoo is generally not required before flashing a new ROM. Always read the OP ENTIRELY of the ROM ur about to flash, each dev will clearly state the need to disable voodoo or not.
Also its good practce to be clearing all 4 settings in CwMRecovery when flashing new ROMs. Good luck!

[Q] how do i know if i have a Voodoo lag fix or any other lag stuff ?

hi
im new to Samsung and android, i want to test out some
ROMS. my phone was bought secondhand and it came pre
loaded with the details in my signature.
i have read through most of the newbie guide lines here on
this site on how to flash but nowhere (as for what i saw)
does not mention on how to test if your phone has a lagfix or by
which method.
as i have read you got to turn off the lag fix before flashing ROM's
so how do i turn mine off.
thanks
HtcDia
*** my current phone details are in my signature ***
Thank you for posting in the correct section and reading some material before posting!
As to your question, if you are completely stock (rooted or not), your Vibrant does NOT have a lag fix enabled. Most of the newer Roms allows for flashing over a lag-fixed (Voodoo) enabled kernel, but only if it comes equipped with a Voodoo injected kernel.
Basically
No lagfix enabled -> Can flash any rom (voodoo kernel or non voodoo kernel)
Lag fix enabled (Voodoo) -> Can flash roms with Voodoo kernel without turning off Voodoo | Must disable Voodoo to flash non-Voodoo kernels
edit: I'm not sure if that is the answer you're looking for but if you go to the red CWM recovery, you can go to Voodoo -> Disable Voodoo. If you do not have a red recovery, then most likely you do not have a Voodoo enabled kernel, thus do not have a lagfix in place. (I assume you also did not use One-Click Lagfix)
thanks anthonys2r
i have not seen either voodoo or anything pertaining to it on my phone nor
have i done the one click fix.
so i can safely assume that i do not have one in place.
thanks for the answer it is perfect

^ You may want to start "fresh" and use ODIN to go back to stock... very easy process (check my signature).
You likely DO have a lagfix (ext4 "voodoo"). But, if your next rom has voodoo enabled, it will not matter if you disable it or not.
There is an app, Voodoo toggle in the market you can use... or you can reboot into CWR and go to the voodoo section. It will also tell you.
Here is the Simply Honey ROM THREAD
Not sure if you were planning on updating or trying a new rom... if the latter, really recommend going back to stock again. I would also encourage Trigger 3.2... its 2.2 but it's stable/themed well!
opening a terminal emulator and typing the command: mount should tell you what file system you're running. Unless everything lists RFS you have a lagfix enabled. If not just 3-button to recovery and scroll down to voodoo... It will tell you inside if it's activated or not.

It's funny you should suggest that i should checked your signature
because most of the stuff that i have gathered initially till present
came from your links LOL.
thanks for providing them as they are great material for android scardy
noobs like me.
yes i do have voodoo. i actually found it lol.
if im right what i want to do is now upgrade my version.1 Simply Honey ROM
to another stable version just to get a feel of flashing and stuff
thanks

On a related question, i can't initiate voodoo for some reason. I read the log and it said "model not detected". Anyway to correct this?
I cant seem to enable voodoo on my phone I have trigger 3.2 and I flashed overstock 1.5.2UV, I'm coming back from CM7 and I don't have the red clockwork recovery either? What can I flash to get this going I have Voodoo toggle that doesn't work neither does voodoo control ...
Did you odin back to stock and then flash Trigger and Overstock?

Yes I did, I'm going to do a few more things to see if I can get it to work
Hm. When booting Trigger for the first time did you hear the voice enabling voodoo?
No Im sure it has to do with CM7 file systems or something...
If you odin'd back and checked repartition that should have wiped the CM7 filesystem and reverted it back to stock RFS.
And you are on Trigger and don't have the red Clockwork?

I did check repartition it didn't work log file in voodoo folder still says model not detected, Im about to see what happen when I flash trigger 3.2 again I formated system in CWM and odin with repartition checked....
still nothing dam...
Just read another possible solution in a different thread that I didn't think of...

Try to use Eugene's odin rom, and then go back to stock JFD and see if that fixes it.
I got it you have to odin Eugene's froyo that doesn't brick, then I used Eugene's 2.2 Downgrade odin flashed that annnnnndddddd now I'm flashing Trigger and I can hear Lindas voice now
Happy flashing.

prepping for custom roms

hi,
im trying to flash a custom rom onto my vibrant.
but i've got a question regarding the phone starting stage.
i got the phone from craigslist and it seems the phone is slightly modded:
-it's got a "overstock" logo when you first start up the phone.
-when i boot the phone using the pressing of two volume keys and power button, i get "clockworkmod recovery v2.5.1.3- voodoo lagfix" in red color.
What i want to ask is do I have to get rid of these mods first before i flash custom roms to prevent future problems? If so, how do i get rid of these mods?
if i dont have to get rid of these mods first, do i just follow this guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
also, i can flash custom roms without rooting right?
thanks
the phone is already rooted for you, to verify you should see the superuser app in your app drawer. Its a skulled android head. You can install any custom rom that already had voodoo enabled without disabling it. If you like you can disable it by going to the voodoo option and disabling it on the next boot. I wouldn't worry about it because most of these current roms have voodoo. What rom were you planning to flash?
hi thanks for the reply.
but i don't think my phone was rooted cuz there was no superuser logo.
so i did root it using the superoneclick method.
however, im in trouble now cause i accidentally formatted the internal sd thinking that'd disable the voodoo lagfix. (the guy i bought it from said he applied the lag fix- i wanted to disable it cause i'm trying to flash the team whiskey 1.3.1 and the site guideline said it'd brick my phone unelss i disable the lagfix- stupid i know)
But i did the phone backup using the rom manager and i restored, but my pics are still not there?
am i screwed here or can i recover somehow the pics from my phone using the backup file?
thanks!
