Can andrlod catch malware? Like windows
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
yes, it has. more often than i'd like to think about. google the subject and do your homework. there are a lot of things to pay attention to...
-if the app is a duplicate from another dev in market (might have malware added)
-where you downloaded it from if non-market
-permissions (do they match what is needed for the app to work?)
-etc.

Any malware you might encounter for Android would be acquired through shady apps. It isn't like you'll go to a website in your browser, and then you'll end up with some malware. Malware on android is spread by the malware being coded into certain applications (malicious apps). If you don't download pirated apps, and pay close attention to the permissions of an app before you install it, and use your common sense, you will likely not have to worry about malware. Always read the permissions that an app is requesting before installing that app.
So would uninstalling the malicious app get rid of the malware? Or is it like computers, where ur pretty much screwed once infected.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
There have been plenty of apps on the market with malware. I've been using lookout for a while now, it's caught a few from google market and amazon (which have since, been removed).
I would assume removing the app removes the malware, but I don't know.

I am 99% sure that removing the app and rebooting the phone would remove the malware. There used to be a few malicious apps that would run the old rageagainstthecage exploit and provide temp root access (without the user knowing). So it granted root permissions and had access to all sorts of wild info. In that case, removing and rebooting would fix it. But personally, if I ever encountered any malicous app, I would remove it and then do a hard reset, just to be sure.
Thanks for the reply. I'll keep what you said in mind. This is probably the one good thing I could think of of why having a locked phone would be beneficial. I know with HTC phones, any changes made at root level is reverted after a reboot. So it would make sense.

I would say that the malware 'problem' has to do with Google being so incredibly lax on the market. Nearly anyone can write an app and have it published on the market within 24 hours. From what I understand, there is almost no security check at all. So someone could write a malicious app that steals all sorts of info, put it on the market, and get away with it until someone else figured it out and reported it to Google, at which time Google would pull it from the market. I would think that if the apps had to at least go through a security check, and make sure that there is no malicious code in the app, that there wouldn't be as many apps with malware in the first place. If that was the case, the only way to get malware then would be by using apps from sources other than the market, or pirated apps and what not. I feel like Google could remain just as open as they are, and still implement a 'security check' of sorts on all apps submitted to the market. Definitely no need to go crazy, like apple does, but a simple check of the app I think would be beneficial for all.
Most if the known malware uses an old exploit that was patched with gingerbread, therefor we font really have to worry too much about it. Although no matter what OS and security software you use there will always be there possibility, your best bet to avoid it is to just use common sense.

Is antivirus use full on android?
Please share your info
**** no
seriously man please mind the language,
all age groups of people here..
im saying no a mobile phone simply does not need antivirus.
about the language it doesnt really matter. even if a kid reads it, sooner or later when they grow up they will use that language anyway
Why not? I thing is not so bad for some people use antivirus as tool make wipe all data or try localization via antivir like avast etc. Dont forget, mobile antivir IS NOT SAME like pc antivir.

Antivirus is not needed if download apps only from Market. If outside Play Store, then you might get some bug in your phone indeed.
Android viruses are not popular enough yet.
Some info on the matter.
You only "need" an antivirus on rooted devices. If you havent rooted your device, then you shouldn't have an issue, since every possible virus out there needs root privileges in order to do some damage to your phone.
Since android is build based on linux, there are basically very few viruses out there. But as always, a little caution in what you install never hurt anyone.
Yes, it's useful...
1 - If you use your phone as an mass storage device, some virus from Windows can infect your sd card...
2 - if you lose your phone, most of the antivirus can help you to find the phone, and lock the device so others can't use them..
3 - if you download apps from "black market" or visit porn on your phone, ( yeah, I do that sometimes too..) it can protect your phone from malicious apps and others threads..

I've read some interesting blog posts lately:

android_market_security
For now my phone remains fast, stable and battery friendly without any av software. But i know for sure where my apps came from and dont use the mini for web browsing - there may be other scenarios.
LOL No,you don't need an AntiVirus yet on Android devices if you know what you re doing and if you re careful about app permissions esp on a rooted phone.
The Windows virus on SD card comment made me laugh! :-D
That said, according to a lot of sites on the net,Android Trojans are on the rise thanks to Google s app policy...

with windows virus you may transfer it to another windows, but it cannot possibly affect your android system.
i second the fact that unless you are rooted, you would not need an antivirus..
also google play removes malicious software from the store.
anti theft is possibly the only reason one would want to install an antivirus,
thanks for the comments
My phone is rooted,i download application from blackmarket,am going to try an antivirus let me see its usefull or not
As long as you don't install apps from untrustworthy sources you should be fine.
In any case, Avast seems to be pretty decent when compared to the other alternatives. Read about it in Android AV reviews somewhere. The firewall function is pretty sweet too to let some apps connect through WiFi only or not at all.

Gandhar said what had to be said. I am using a Mcaffe antivĂrus my Carrier gave me with a free full 1 Year license. The GPS tracking, wipe and block functions in case of a lost or theft phones are sweet. And if you are not rooted, no need for an av.
Windows viruses inside SD? Yeah, true. But than you can blame the Windows user who didn't has a decent av software to block it.

Windows viruses can only affect other PCs when mounting your SD card.In Android they re irrelevant.
I did install Avast last night and found out that a Flashlight app that needed GPS permissions (!).
Other than that,I also liked the Anti-Theft protection which by the way you can keep even if you uninstall the virus scanner.

Like people said, Windows viruses do not work on Android.
For anti-theft, use Prey. It's a great free app, that only starts working when phone receives SMS with specific text. I use it.

I would like to find ether some kinda app that will work with my browser or a whole new browser that will let me to inject cookies I have sniffed off my network to open up sessions. I'm kinda new to android pen testing and its really kinda foreign because now I can't work with a terminal (command promt) for the reasons I want. Anyone know of such a app? Or browser? Thanks for the help.

Its possible. There are apps that grabs cookies and inputs it in its own browser. All I want is the cookie injector. And not really a privacy violation what so ever. If people isn't smart enough to use SSL then there crap should be exploited. Not that SSL will keep you safe but android isn't that advance to decrypt. Yet.

Agree with you Bro. Use Droidsheep, it's more of a MITM attack rather than cookie injection, same thing really.

Yeah definitely. I use Droidsheep for arp mitm spoof. Witch works amazingly for people who don't SSL there connection. Right now I have a privet server that interacts with the connection my phone has, anywhere I go. Witch is amazing, i can use backtrack without killing my phone via connnected to SSH -> TOR network. I can decrypt SSL via backtrack and all I need is a cookie injection method to complete my task (so i dont have to do it VNC). Until I find something else I want to do. Thanks for your feedback bro.

I was afrade of that. Kinda figure that was the only way. It sucks because my main way of connecting to backtrack is through SSH tunnel. That way it's all command based and if I really have to, pull up vnc.

Apps do not usually use your browser applications to send cookies and heartbeats lol
The key to manipulating/injecting/hijacking phone applications on Android (probably IOS aswell) is the Android System WebView library that comes with Androids base linux kernal. Oddly enough, what browser an app uses (useragent) to make background requests, heartbeats, cookies...etc is really up to the developer of the app. If you know what you are doing, there are a couple of ways to proxy that intent request but unncessary. Most apps will call directly to that WebView system app to create HTTP requests. It also uses if i remember correctly, the Mozilla, Android, and uh.. idr the last one. This is all happen stance information based on something else as an android dev. lol but TL;DR: Learn how to use Intents. Intent hackers own your phone just as fast as you purchase it. Ideally every major company would stop everything they are doing right now and sign up a raise:good: on their App Security Development budget immidiately.:silly::victory:
If you can change or even better if you can Filter all the intents sent from TargetApp => Android System WebView... well ****. Suddenly you dont even need an injecting mechanism. Cause you're now exactly that. Probably a better result then one would hope.
there any way to manager or change cookies values on chrome on android?
Yandex browser & Firefox let u edit the cookie, just search '' edit this cookie" (yandex) and" cookie editor" for firefox. And do the same as you do in your pc chrome(+add to chrome).

Hello All,
I've been trying long time to block the camera.
What I'm trying to do is to block it so no other app could use it.
but - The block should not be permanently
After rooting and mounting the device for RW, I have tried to rename the driver folder in the following path: sys/devices/virtual/camera but this doesn't work because there are no permissions to edit these files (kernel?).
I really hope that someone here have idea how to solve this issue.. must be a way to crack it..
Thanks,
Put black tape over the camera, easy, cheap, not permanent.

Obvious solution - don't use any apps that require the permissions for camera control.
Alternatively get the app 'Permissions Denied' (free) from Play store and revoke camera control from the apps in question.
You can do it manually / scheduled too by removing the corresponding Group (every permission is a Unix Group) from the App's Username (each app has it's own username in the format app_[APPID])

Hello, basically I am wondering what is the best program to edit .DAT files ( the typ of file that is [mostly] used by android-game dev's to save stored data of the game )
and edit them,
also i was wondering what if I can't find the game/app map when connected to USB?
> I want to do it on the PC because I have the one X and are NOT going to root it.
Regards!
In order to access those files and write on them (edit them), you need root.

An app cannot write there under normal circumstances.. For writing there you need root, but games doesn' store their savegames there.
Let me put it differently.. if an app doesn't ask for root, all files it creates can be accessed by adb.

This is why non rooted phones cannot cheat on games, they cannot access the files there.
When you go into app settings and look under each app, there is a section that says data....x MB. And you can clear data. That data is stored under /data/data

Hex editor, and messing around to see what each adress does. Every game dev uses their own liba and stuff, there is no universal program to edit those files.
Its like writting your own secret code inside a book, someone else might open it, but go figure out how to interpret each line.

It sure is. Hell, there even is a forum wide XDA announcement about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?f=530
You might try enabling USB debugging... Found under developer options. This is in all Android devices enabling varies by release. Try checking out Setting - About Android - build version click that 7 times and it should enable it in main settings. It has already been said you really should root. This is usually the first step to getting root. I know nothing about HTC, but chainfire root has worked for me many times, from Sony, Moto and Samsung. Google your make and model + root +xda dev.
I myself have used Hex Editor, but it looks like garbage to me. Good luck and please give an update if you find a template or app
Interesting. I'm trying to hack my own game. Hope I can, because it obviously is possible...lol.
Hacking HTC devices is hard as hell, i have htc one and i can tell
The root needs clock work mode
And this CWM needs bootloader and the bootloader needs hellava time and experience
I just dont have time to do all that sh1t, isnt there an easier way to root stupid htc's, or at least to hack games on pc
Or hack the games without rooting
And dont tell me to use lucky patcher because its bullsh1t
