Before learning the basics about rooting and flashing ROMs (I still consider myself a noob though) I was using EasyTether for my laptop data connection and it was working great.
Recently I rooted so I could use WiFi Tether which seemed to work well for about a week. For no apparent reason I've begun having issues.
My brief history, in order, includes:
OTA 2.1
rootme.zip (problems began shortly hereafter)
FlashBack21_v1.zip
Tenzo-Official2.1-cache.zip
kaosfroyo-v38.zip (this rocks but...)
So, the problem is that after a few minutes (and I mean maybe 1-2) of using tethered data from my phone (in all ROMs listed after root) said data stops. Disconnecting/reconnecting has no effect. The only resolution is to restart phone and reconnect. Works for a few brief moments then stops. This behavior was consistent with USB Tether, Wifi Tether and Easy Tether.
When observing this behavior on my laptop and then browsing back on my phone there also seems to be no data connection. All is well when I restart the phone. So long as I don't tether my phone browses normally.
So, what should my next steps be here? How do I troubleshoot? Is it possible that Verizon can detect that I'm tethered and is shutting down my data?
Thanks
Bernie
They may have detected it. Wait for the bill.
This crap has been happening off and on for me since I began tethering with my rooted Eris last May. Just in the past month, though, the symptoms seem to have become more frequent. Occasionally I'll have an uninterrupted session...but typically I'm frequently running to my phone, putting it in airplane mode momentarily, restarting tether, etc.
I've tried switching to hybrid PRLs, changing radios, updating towers, reactivating my phone, multiple ROMS...still pretty crappy. Also, in the past I noticed Windows 7 seemed to lock up tethering more frequently than XP...however, that has since become less true. My next step was to update my Windows 7 Wifi driver...did that this morning and have been going strong for 40 minute or so. I'm guessing it's just luck at this point.
BTW...Don't worry too much about your bill...I've seen no tethering charges and have been doing this for 6 months.
So, I flashed back to an un-rooted stock ROM and installed EasyTether again and have tested a few times now using only USB tethering. No dice. Symtoms are the same. It works for a while then just stops. Won't work again until I restart phone.
When I disconnect the phone from the Laptop, the phone's browser doesn't appear to be getting data either. All pages/bookmarks just hang with the progress bar maybe at 20%.
So, I suspect this is either the network is picking up that I'm tethering somehow, or, the phone is jacked. The bummer is that I can only replicate this when tethering.
Someone suggested that tethering may be against the Verizon terms of service. Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks,
Bernie
Tethering is against the TOS sure. I don't know man.

+1 - I hate to say this and it's a cliche, but I'm glad it's not just me. Most of the time I have uninterrupted tethering for just browsing, but when I start downloading that's when it becomes more susceptible to the 3G going in and out.
I usually do an APN delete and restore but I still find that a reboot is necessary most of the time.
Sometimes I do have uninterrupted downloads but other times it gets interrupted all the time.
I am using Wifi tethering, too. I used to use USB tethering, but even though both get interrupted, Wifi tethering seems to work better. It's faster to connect.
Good news, check out my thread for a solution at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=852618

Hey everyone. I’ve used this site coupled with androidforums for all of my Vibrant problems. In the past I have found all of my answers with a quick search. Unfortunately I have run into a problem where searching hasn’t yielded any possible fixes.
Get ready for a novel. (or scroll to the bottom for the tl;dr)
I updated my Vibrant to 2.2 a few days after the release was updated. I’ve been tethering my phone pretty frequently since then. I rooted my phone days before, didn’t screw around with anything while rooted, then unrooted before I updated. I’m using Windows 7. Using an unlimited data plan. My usual download speeds (through speakeasy) were around 1.3mbps. Uploads were slower, but they don’t matter much anyway. The connectivity and speed have been great up until last night. I was doing some school work, downloading various word files when all of the sudden internet pages were loading extremely slowly, and all of the downloads stopped. I saw a little yellow ! yield sign over the internet connectivity method in my task bar. It said “No Internet Access”. I switched to wifi (my phone tethers 2x as fast as the wifi here), and continued. School > phone internet problems.
Wifi speed (speakeasy.net) (today)
Down: 0.44mbps
Up: 0.10mbps
After getting home today from class, I finally had a chance to try to see what was up. I plugged my phone it, and it worked pretty well for a few minutes. After those few minutes the yellow ! came up, paired with “No Internet Access”. I disconnected my phone from my computer, tried again, reset my phone then tried again, and even removed apps that ran in the background that were sharing the connection. Nothing changed. My phone has been in the exact same position on my desk each time I have tethered it, starting from the very first time, always on the windowsill.
I downloaded the speedtest.net app to see what my speeds were, because the wifi at my house was loading pages and stuff a lot faster than my phone was. While remaining somewhat precise, the results were all over the board. While doing the tests I put the phone in its usual spot on the sill, and then moved it directly in front of me on my desk. I started to search for related problems on line, but couldn’t find anything more than a thread or two with the answer to a similar problem being tower quality/relative distance.
I ran the troubleshoot app that windows has, and it came back with “The DNS server isn’t responding”. Again I searched (google) for a possible fix, and yielded no results. The only thing I found was some custom DNS servers mod on here, but I’ve been waiting for Kies to download for the past 20 minutes to back my phone up. While downloading Kies I noticed that I was getting ~25kbps, and that it was going to take 30+ minutes. I hooked my phone up, and restarted the download. It shot up to 5mbps then just dropped. It went from 5mbps, to 4mbps, 2mbps, 1.5mbps, 900kbps, 800-700-600-500, all while the rate of change was decreasing as well. The jump from 5mbps to 1.5mbps was by the mb, but once it got to 900kbps the rate of change went from dropping hundreds, to dropping tens, to quickly dropping ones, to trickling out single kilobits. Then I was hit with the ! “No Network Access”. While this was happening the phone stayed completely stationary. The complete loss in data came only after tethering. I browsed the internet on my phone for a few minutes after, and everything was fine. It’s almost like the data tethering is signaling the phone to drop network access or something. I have zero apps running in the background of my phone that are using push, to my knowledge. I’m at a loss.
The speed tests I did earlier are below.
Tether speed (speakeasy.net) (last week)
Down: 1.3mbps
Up:??
Today’s 3G speed (speedtest.net app) – based off of 19 tests done in a little under an hour.
Highest download – Lowest download
Down: 0.86mbps - 0.06mbps
Highest upload – Lowest upload
Up: 0.62mbps – 0.03mbps
-Actually the lowest for each was zero, after getting the “No Network Access” I disconnected and tested, and got -0.00mbps.-
Average:
Down: 0.41mbps
Up: 0.18mbps
Also, before buying this Vibrant I had an iPhone on Tmobile. I unlocked it myself, jailbroke it, set up tethering , ect, ect. So I’m not completely phone-modding illiterate. I've just been out of the loop for a year or so.
Tl;dr – Been tethering phone for a month with consistent speed/no problems. Last night randomly I got “No Network Access”, and since then my tethering has started at a very high speed after plugging it in, then dived down until there was “No Network Access”. Windows 7 says “The DNS server isn’t responding.” Phone was in the same spot it has always been in, everything has been fine up until last night. wat do?
Maybe you have been throttled by Tmobile. Have you gone over your cap of 5gigs? Our data plans are not truly unlimited, but you atleast you have received a text from Tmobile first. Thats my guess.
i sometimes have a similar problem but it sounds like youre tethering via usb, correct? I use mobile ap to use the net wirelessly off my phone and have had issues with it either not connecting at all and giving an error or just never connecting. My solutions have been quick easy fixes and figured id share but not sure if they would work for you or not. When it gives the error in mobile ap i simply click settings and then save (not changing anything) and then turn it on again and bam it works... When i get no connection after it works, or if i lose connection while online, i flip the phone to airplane mode for about 45 seconds and then turn airplane mode back off and turn mobile ap back on and everything is great. I also have the "unlimited" data, and i use it a lot, actually 3 days ago i looked and was at 4.7gb used... and havent looked again but i gotta be over the "5gb limit" and i havent been throttle capped at all.. Everything is running great speed wise... figured it would be worth a try if you wanted to, like i said, not sure if it will help your situation but just in case it might thats how i get around the data drops.
I've had two Galaxy S II phones now, and I've had the same problem with both devices. The phone's wifi is great -- when it works. Although I noticed that the death grip lowers the wifi signal bar, I can still browse the internet and download apps just fine.
The problem is that, at times, the phone will show wifi connectivity and yet, I can't browse the internet or access the App Store. I'll have to shut off the wifi multiple times and even this doesn't work 100% of the time. Shutting off the phone and turning it back on works 100% of the time.
Since this has happened to two phones, I'm beginning to question whether I have an issue with the wireless router because I have not come across this as a prevalent issue. At the same time, my laptop and a family member's iphone doesn't have the same issue.
Anyone else having this problem? Or have suggestion for fixing the problem?
Thanks
Here is me showing the problem on video:
My roommate and I both have the Galaxy SII and he constantly has problems connecting to our wifi. The only difference in our phones is his is rooted and mine is not. I plan on rooting my one of these days but would like to fix the other issues I am having first.
Mine isn't rooted, but it still has the connectivity problem.
EDIT:
I may have found the the solution. Probably unique to my situation, but what I did was disable WPS on my router. It's a medialink router and I thought I had disabled it (per instruction) but it was on. Perhaps that was the issue. So far, no problem.
EDIT:
Nope, the wifi has dropped again. By dropped, I don't mean it drops in the middle of browsing. It seems to drop after I've stopped using the phone for a while. I've already checked to see that the phone is to never turn off the wifi when the display is off/sleep.
Arghhh
same exact problem.

Don't have any issue with wi-fi , mine is rooted on stock rom
i have no issues with wifi on my sgs2, i have wifi on 24/7, and on wifi proabably 50% of the time. it connects and disconnects when supposed to, picks up on cell data and drops when its supposed to..
fwiw, my GF has an iphone 4, she had problems connecting to the HOME wifi, but no where else, i updated the firmware on the router, same problem, i swapped out the router for a spare a friend had, and setup a second access point on the same network, just called it the same SSID but put a "2" after it.
her connectivity problems went away, immediatly she noticed a difference and has never complained of a drop since...
try different encryption methods, if you're using wep, try wpa, try a few different things.
also try a firmware update, you might lose your settings during a firmware update, but there is usually a backup/restore option you can use. backup your settings before flash, then restore after. if you have access, for at least testing purposes, hook up another router and use it to connect to and see if the same problems persist.
No problems at all connecting to a WHR-G54S running Tomato.
The Moto Surfboards are known to be flaky.
I had the same problem. after getting another one I found out that if I didn't download so many apps at one time the problem mostly stopped and after running a couple weeks, I haven't had the problem with connection since. I'm not sure it will help, but I did a factory data reset and reinstalled the apps one our two at a time (it's frustrating, I know).

First post here so sorry if I have noob questions...
But my Galaxy S 2 (non-skyrocket) is stock, at 2.3.4 and when tethering, specifically to my ipad, it seems to only work for 30 seconds...
The Data for HSPA+ seems to still work through the phone(as I can still goto websites through the phone), but the tethering seems to cut off after a few seconds...
I have tried disabling encryption (WPA) and still the same thing happens. Only way to get it to work again is to disable the tethering, and reenable, but it only works again for 30 seconds and cuts off...
I tried restarting the phone, and disabling most services running...
Is this a common issue I am experiencing?
I didn't expect this especially when I am pay for the 4GB plan with tethering enabled???

Hi Chris,
Sorry to hear of this issue...? What happens if you try the tethering with a laptop? Does the laptop too get dropped? I would also try keeping the security OPEN and unlocked (no password) *OPEN* to verify it isn't a hardware issue...
Once you have identified that the WiFi is indeed working, then one by one re-enabled the security settings...
Good Luck....
Thanks, I have tried it as an open security then back and the same thing...
I also found the 'Wifi Sleep Policy' setting which seems to be the setting... but it was already set to NEVER... I will continue playing around with settings as it seems to cut off the wifi when my phone goes to sleep or the screen turns off...
I have this problem also. Anyone know anything about this?
I also have that problem. Good for about 20 to 30 secs then nada. Gotta cycle tethering on off to get it back.
Try tethering with a different device. Just to make sure the device that's tethering isn't part of the problem.

Yup - gtg and I have both seen these reports on and off in the Unnamed thread and elsewhere, the problem is that neither of us can reproduce the problem ourselves.
I tether my Tab 10.1 all the time and have NEVER had issues.
If it keeps happening, grab a dmesg and logcat...
I have seen similar thread poped up here before. It seems some phones have this problem. Some don't. Mine doesn't have this problem. Funny thing is both threads are started by ppl who actually paid tethering plan. It's like AT&T didn't really want anyone to pay the tethering plan
I'm running UnNamed v1.3.1. I was wondering if At&t was detecting the connection and dropping it but maybe it's an issue with the ROM.
I am having a sorta similar problem, it drops every 15-30mins.
Not sure if the issue is also happening with USB tethering.
Subplot and LiLChris if you could both get us some logcats while the tethering starts and while it stops we might be able to get things working.

Yea ill get that for you today when I get home.
Has anyone got a fix for this? I have the same problem. The connection drops after about 2 minutes. I have the tethering plan from ATT.
Regarding tethering on ATT: If you use UnNamed or any other ROM for that matter for tethering (for example USB tethering), do you encumber extra charges if you are on a data plan (or lets say unlimited data plan)? I understand that carriers offer tethering plans and charge heftily for them.
You don't until you receive the C&D text message from AT&T
Hmmm - I guess we don't want that. There goes that option if stranded on an island and no wifi around. But wait - do I need internet on an island? Or corporate email?

Basically, AT&T has a set of unknown criteria they use to detect tethering.
I've been doing light tethering my Galaxy Tab 10.1 for months with no issues.
Other people have gotten nastygrams after only a few minutes of light tethering of a laptop.
Other people seem to fall in the middle.

My unscientific theory on their detection is that they are somehow detecting user agent strings from the tethered device. If you are tethering an Android tab and my theory is true it would still show up as an Android devices so no harm no foul. Just an idea.
EDIT: I have gotten a nastygram lol so no more fun for me

I'm having the same problem. Seams like USB tethering works. Running UnNamed v2.1.1 and I have ATT unlimited data plan. When I disable enable it works again for 30 seconds or so like most others are reporting. When I disable it says error under "Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot"
I know the custom ROMs have a few nice features and clean up some dead wood.
But do any absolutely Fix any of the network issues?
For the record I'm considering OMJ's or Flipz's.
Some background for my question if you interested.
This phone is really starting to suck (Stock Rooted only, no mods).
I really wanted to hold out for possible S-OFF to try any custom ROMs but the phone is becoming useless without doing something.
Last weekend I used my Wifes EVO 3D (my old phone with MeanROM ICS 2.2 on it).
I Tethered from West of Boston to Central NH (2 hr 20 min drive) with out a glitch.
Phone was running Navigation and WIFI Tethered the whole way.
Not one glitch. I've done it many times. My wifes former Touch Pro 2 and EVO 4G was also just as reliable.
Same trip this weekend with the EVO 4G LTE.
Laptop lost WIFI connection to EVO 4G LTE like 5 times.
Sometimes I could get it back by reconnecting or restarting WIFI Tether.
Other times I had to reboot phone, and other times I had to reboot the Laptop to get it back. It just flat out refused to see the phone any more. Even tried shutting WIFI off on laptop and phone, but no, PC or Phone required a reboot not always the same either.
It was also fairly slow and laggy. Just aweful.
When I leave my house with WIFI on, the EVO LTE phone stays connected to WIFI and gets no data until I shut WIFI off. It works fine if I leave work with WIFI on though.
I know there are patches to remove smartsync in several ROMs but the phone was not going to sleep during most of these issues (Had Nav running).
You would need a ROM where someone actually rewrote some code . That's probably not going to happen till source comes out

That might be true but certainly not always true.
And if it is "code" I must depend on that get fixed it's likely a driver and most developers on XDA don't do drivers.
And that "code" could also be on the Radio Side (where I suspect the real issues are) and that code is never released.
Doing things like enabling the 2nd Core full time (which is enabled on my EVEO 3D) might make things run more stable. I don't know.
Most "code" on my EVO 3D is "stock" it's just borrowed from different phones and some build.prop tweaks.

Just my experience : zero difference in connectivity issues (cellular or WiFi) . Previous 3d and OGEVO both had their issues but in the exact same locations I used them ( work WiFi home WiFi commute cellular) -this thing is just bad comparitively. Wireless N (100Mgps down from Cisco rtr) at office drops CONSTANTLY and even just running l navigation will drop out from suburbs to city ( Chicago ) . Go to Mexico this week and I was there in December and was stunned how well Telcel''s network operated ( very fast 3g no dropped calls - thank god work picks up the tab). New York and San Francisco the week after in which I am very familiar with how my service usually acts so ill have some controls to measure against. Very dissapointing so far LTE can't get here glfast enough- realize I veered slightly off topic but , no, I haven't seen any major difference other than great battery life on Vipers

Dude, honestly, u need to take your phone back and exchange it. Had the same problem with WiFi dropping constantly, about every 5 seconds. Would go to 3g then WiFi. Sometimes switching settings would help, tried rooting and did numerous roms, fixes, mods, but the problem was still there.
Well, I took my phone back bc I bricked the secure element somehow and my new phone has none of those issues. I believe it is a faulty receiver/radio. Trust me and take it back for a new one before your 30 days is up. U will thank me.

I'm in RI and kept my Evo og just for tethering. If you were satisfied with the 3d, then the lte will seem more effectual in fringe area reception. Though not as good as the OG in my particular area. The og bounces across a bay without issues. Did I just say sprint has shoddy coverage? Whoops. Didn't mean to.
What I'm getting to is that the risk of depending on htc unlock, vs new radios might be worth evaluating.

Thanks for the data point.
I did try calling Sprint and the tech said I need to shut WIFI off when I leave home and work. They were clueless. After I explained to them how it's supposed to work they said I need to have tech look at it.
Yeah I'm sure they can repeat the problems at will. Some days it's fine.
I don't get WIFI drop outs. Biggest problem is it won't let go of the WIFI when I leave home and that locks data up until I toggle the WIFI enable. Leaving work it's fine.
I have put a custom ROM on it now (flipz). And it's running better. But did have to switch it to 2.4Ghz only again. I do like some the custom ROM features and it allows be to better monitor Data (since it show 1x or 3x) and I can do full nandroid backup to compare changes.
However I did see the bouncey thing when you wake it goes to WIFI to 3G to WIFI again and that I believe is a sign of it struggling.
Then I looked into my Router for more settings to play with and learned Bluetooth can interfere with WIFI (i.e. there are settings for it in my router).
I'm 99% sure this is the problem (and may or may not be the phones fault).
This would explain why a "new" phone could fix an issue because each time you pair a bluetooth device it may choose a different channel. Some channels will conflict with WIFI more than others.
It may explain why some people have no issues too. Can depend on your bluetooth devices as well.
I started a seperate thread on this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721196
I'm amazed nobody has responded.
For grins I left Bluetooth off today and it has run flawless. It didn't get stuck on WIFI when I leave home and it always did.
I need to dig into how to check what channel bluetooth is paired on and how I can control what channel is uses.

I think you're onto something... If I leave the house and wifi sticks on, then I normally have to reboot phone before I can connect to wifi again. Simply toggling wifi off and on doesn't work.
So on a whim, I turned off bluetooth. Then turned wifi off and back on, and bam! Connected! Hmmmm....

For the record I am currently using Viper ROM and I currently have absolutely no issues paring the phone to my car via Bluetooth in comparison to the stock ROM where my phone will not hold a bluetooth connection.

Weird. I had opposite. Rooted, S-off and flashed MeanROM which really liked but bluetooth on one of my cars that was foolproof on stock became very hard to connect. Went back to stock and connects fine again. Miss the customization and may try again. Was a good exercise putting back to stock if ever need to return phone to Sprint.
OK, I've seen a lot of posts in various forums about this issue, but have yet to find a single thread that captures all the details about what I've experienced. Let me know if I should move this conversation into a different thread.
On my home wifi network, I am able to connect, but constantly receive the error "internet connection is unstable", and I cannot pull any data over wifi. I noticed this issue on my home network after returning from a business trip this week. I'd previously seen the issue occasionally in hotels, etc, and had already disabled the "Passpoint" and "Auto network switch settings". That seemed to work on the road, but now that I'm at home, I'm unable to pull any data over wifi.
My home router is a TP-Link Archer C7, running the latest firmware.
Per Verizon and Samsung's advice, I cleared the cache partition, "forgot" and reconnected to the network, tried using safe mode, and tried a factory reset of the phone. I also restarted the router and changed the router's broadcast channels.
Last night, I rooted the phone via Kingo and installed the Jelly 'Beans' rom using SafeStrap, since I wasn't getting satisfactory answers from support. To my surprise, the issue also occurred on the new rom. I'm not an Android expert, but it seems like this means its either:
1) a hardware issue, or
2) a lower-level software issue (radio firmware? not sure how that works)
I removed root and safestrap, to continue support options with Verizon, but I wanted to ping the community here for suggestions. The timing is confusing to me. I'm pretty sure, though not certain, that I've used my home network successfully since the 12/17 OTA update. However, since so many others are seeing issues, it seems unlikely that this is a hardware issue.
Could others describe their issues and router, so we can look for patterns? Let me know if I should move this into a different thread.
Thanks!
Mine does the same thing from time to time but only on certain roms

yeah, I'd seen intermittent issues previously, but all of a sudden it stopped working at home entirely. Still connects to some other networks, although not all.
After seeing a bunch of posts on the Verizon forums (and just the general timing and behavior of the issue) it seemed like a software problem.
Verizon is actually cooperating, so I may just end up replacing this phone. Wondering if anyone else has seen wifi completely break like this.
This is the only thing I can not stand about my note
I have a Zyxel WAP3205 WIFI access point (Wireless G) that I use at both work and at home.
At home, I have Comcast Business Cable internet, and have absolutely no issues connecting to it. The WAP is connected to a Belkin N600 router, which is then connected to my cable modem (not sure of the model, shouldn't matter TBQH).
At work on the other hand, I have constant connection issues. Albeit, I don't get the 'connection is unstable' notification, but I get constant connect/disconnect problems. I also have almost no (most of the time I can't even send/receive text messages at my desk.....) phone signal (ie not even 1X). I'm not sure if that plays into it at all either. The company I work for uses Windstream for their ISP, and it's complete crap to be perfectly honest. Needless to say, it doesn't change the fact that I'm connecting to the internet through the same device (well, same model/firmware/etc...), and I'm having issues at 1 place and not at the other.
I might also add that my tablet (Nexus 7 2013 running CM11) doesn't seem to have these issues at all and works just fine via the WIFI.
That's about the only information that I can provide. I know my internet where I work is complete crap. I sometimes remote desktop back to my home server to browse the web and download files via that because it's actually faster. I'm not even kidding.
I have 2 routers at home and have experienced the same issue as well and none of my other devices have this problem

Verizon is shipping a replacement phone to me tomorrow, so I'll test this out and see if it makes a difference. I'm on the road until Thursday, so it'll be a few days before I can check on my home router.
The behavior on this issue just seems strange. It began intermittently, but then completely stopped working at my house (but still sometimes works elsewhere). Lots of people report intermittent issues, but a few seem completely broken. Not sure what to make of it, I'm just glad I was able to get a different device out of Verizon. We'll see if that actually fixes the problem.
I haven't had this notification until I got the Note3. Is it possible that its android 4.3? Or this tw 4.3? Anybody know if other folks get this with other devices?

I only have this problem if I connect to the wifi at work, which is odd because I'm about 7 unobstructed feet away from the AP. I don't get this anywhere else.
I had a Note2 on stock rom up to 4.3 and never had the issue. I have a 2012 Nexus 7 latest version, again, no problem. It's only on my Note3 with stock rom that this happens.

It happens on custom roms too.
I've asked a couple devs if they could remove it and they said it been like that in android for along time. But I never experienced it until my Note 3

Same here. Never happened on my Note2 but happens all the time on my Note3. I have two Linksys Routers at home for full house coverage and I can be in the next room and get that message. Just got it earlier. Same routers as I had with the N2 a few months ago. My Tablet, nor the Spouses HTC One Max have that issue and are connecting just fine, and stay connected.
I get this all the time. Got it on stock as well. Only really happens with my ghetto satellite Internet though lol

Has anyone with this issue installed AdBlock and/or an ad-blocking HOSTS file? I didn't start seeing this problem until I did both.
Whenever I see this message I can go into the speedtest.net app and pull a continuous 60mbits down, pretty much maxing my connection, and I never see any actual stability issues.
I think the system may have some connectivity test that's being interfered with but I haven't had time to go digging through the logs yet, so I wanted to see if anyone else had done what I did to trigger it first.
Seems to be two different issues being discussed here without really differentiating the two... the OP states that he is always getting the notification and "can't pull any data over wifi" ... others are saying they are getting the notification without really stating if it is affecting their overall wifi performance at all.
I'm on AT&T DSL... I was getting the notification ALL THE TIME while using the supplied (4 year old) AT&T 2Wire router and it would fail and freeze and disconnect and it was DRIVING ME NUTS... so i went out and got a brand new Netgear N300 router and problem is solved ... mostly
I'm still using the AT&T 2Wire as a modem... disabled it's internal wifi... ethernet cable to the Netgear. .. and BINGO!!! All my connection problems and data problems have gone away... i still get the unstable notification maybe once or twice a week but i figure that's a DSL thing... any little glitches in Internet availability will be detected by the device and displayed so that doesn't bother me at all.
It's almost like this phone does ping tests all the time and if one doesn't come back properly it throws the notification...
i was at a friends house the other day and was getting the notification constantly but was still able to watch YouTube videos and Netflix without much problem... so i did some speed tests on his wifi and his ping and upload were all over the place... His download speed was solid between 20 and 28 but his upload was never even close to normal and failed several times... and his ping was good on some and took forever on others... i also noticed Web pages would sometimes take forever to start loading ... Once they started loading they did so quickly but the start was painfully slow a lot of the time... This would indicate to me that the ping or upload connection has issues or maybe over congested on his iSP.
Anyway... hope this helps others iron things out

When I get the notification, it refuses to use the wifi at all.
I haven't noticed any problems with my WiFi. I host 6 wireless networks, and play with WiFi a lot, War driving, and wireless network setup is a hobby of mine.
One thing I noticed at several throttled Hot Spots My VZW note 3 would test the WiFi speed, if it was slower than 4G it would display a popup, something to the effect "Wireless too slow, using mobile Data" I can't remember the exact popup text. It might be a VZW thing.
I use the OOKLA speedtest, free from the play store. (After you run your OOKLA test, for fun drag the speedometer down to reveal some cool messages about Ookla!
A few wireless router settings I use:
Set 2.4 to N 20 Megs max. N 40 or AC mostly just creates problems with connections, and the neighborhood.
Channels 1, 6, or 11 in USA Use a WiFi analyzer app and pick a less cluttered WiFi channel.
Place wireless router up high away from electronics, construction, and stuffs. Mine is on a pedestal in a window.

Go to WiFi settings/advanced/auto network switch... and turn that off so it won't jump off slow WiFi networks

Thanks,
I just tested "auto network switch" on and then off. It let me connect to one of my throttled networks, without; "Checking quality of internet connection".
I noticed that it only showed; "network disabled because internet connection is slow" on the congested 2.4 GHz band, not with same router on 5.8 GHz.
Radio interference, location, and router settings, can cause many problems on wireless networks.

You're right, I noticed in my research that multiple issues seem to be getting lumped together. I think you're correct in that it's related to the router as well, somehow. I see the notification occasionally on slow hotel connections, but it's intermittent, my problem at home seems permanent. I can use some other wifi networks without problems, though.
That said, I used this phone on my home router for a couple months before ever seeing this problem. I'm guessing it's a combination of the 12/17 OTA update, and particular router models.
Verizon sent me a replacement phone, and it's running the previous build (MJ7 instead of MJE). I'll check things out tonight, and will report back.
Alright, the issue seems resolved on the new phone. This seems to suggest that it is related to the MJE build. So far this phone hasn't asked for an update, but I'm hoping Verizon doesn't break this again for me
