Hello there..
I have recently discovered your website and it is very impressive, well done
In september i am going back to 6th form to complete my a-levels, and i believe that the XDA would be a good application to have....
But i was wondering does any one have an opinion on a 16 year old using the XDA mainly for social reasons? Has anybody had an experince like mine? Is it really worth the money? Also can it be used as an mp3 player?
Thanks very much for your time and effort in advanced.
Jason
Yes, it's a fine MP3 player if you have a bigish SD-card for the music, and some better headphones than the junk that comes with it.
yeah im planning on getting the 256mb sd card....
but doesn't the ear phones supplied come with a speaker in it, to use it as a hands free kit?
thanks
jay
If you can wait a little, the XDA II will be available before december 2003 , and will be a lot better than the actual one :!:
XDA 2? is there something i should know about it?
is there a thread? what does it do?
thanks
jay
how much do u think the new XDA 2 will cost?
thanks again for ur help
jay
im 17 just finished 6th form and doing year 13 soon ive had an xda since i was 16 tis ok but if u use it for social and daily things expect it to get dents and scratches but other then that tis fine.
mp3 is good on it but movies are alot better lol
people call it a brick but when they see what it can do they love it lol.
other then that some peeps think ur werid holding this slab against your head till they figure out its actually a phone lol
imo get it
lol.....ok thanks
i really want to get it, but im not sure if i should wait until the XDA 2 comes out....
any suggestions?
thanks
jay
well i guess u either work or you are a rich student  so if you are in any of theose catagories id say yeah go for the xda 2 when its out. will be about £600 simfree though :S
(ill have to give it a miss as i need to save for my car insurance )
lol......im not that rich
i think i will just by the xda now, beacuse all that i have read about the XDA 2 the main difference i can find is that it has an intergrated camera.....and im not to bothered about that...
thanks
jay

I agree with the conclusion, but only because I have a hunch that the XDA2 is still a long ways off. But it has more than an integrated camera: Bluetooth and SDIO. You will really miss these, but then you can just sell it and get the XDA2 later.
it also have a 400Mhz cpu compared to xda1's 206Mhz
and it's cellphone is triband which you of cause dont need unless you travel to us or some other country which use 1900 Mhz
and it got optional Wireless LAN capability
and longer batt time
i'm just getting the xda1 myself since i cant wait for the xda2 which will most likely not come to where i live before Q1->Q2 04
and by then G3 (UMTS) pda phones will be just around the corner and then i could wait for those and end up waiting for ever
Social implications....
....put up with everyone calling it a "brick"... then repeat yourself 100s of times saying it isnt a phone, its a pda with a phone built into it. Then play some sample video, mp3 and start up the Rayman game, and watch them turn green with envy, and walk away saying "theyre glad they dont that brick"...
and show them jpg and avi files of sheep and goat p0rn which when you have a xda you always have with you for your viewing pleasure jk
yeah
i told my friend what i was getting, and now he is getiing an XDA now... lol
thanks to everyone who posted
jay
Hmm...
Advantages
I'd say it would be perfect if you go to college/uni, as you could fall asleep and record the audio from a lecture!
You could also play games with the atari VCS or Mame emulators, as well as its obvious mp3 capability.
Disadvantages
Buy a soft or hard case (see my posts in the Accessories forum)
Great device but dont dare drop it! Its not a plastic nokia!
Dont surf the web or use it for email though, GPRS is damned expensive. Spam can be very pricey!
Sorry for invading this thread seems just like what I was going to say later anyway
Well I Just been searching through for the word camera (wonder if there was a review of the one I just purchased)
Well Tommorow Afternoon Im going to buy a XDA Im not that worried on the new one, and I think its perfectly fine for 16-17 yr old Im 17, I loved it when I had a go of it in herefords o2 shop, the bloke there wasnt saying nowt about XDA 2 and the price drop even though he was trying to hint on things
One thing that made me buy it is it has Excel and Word as Im doing a college course based around Office Software, im going to have a freindly word with one of the college technicians and install the uploading software onto my profile, had a good look around the back of the college computers and they only got serial ports so put in a purchase for a serial cable 2 save me carrying around hundred of floopys to take home
You made some great suggestions for therory leasons, great idea as a dictaphone , and taking photos of the board wont have to write it down, look like a prick but hey who cares
mp3, and games on the way home well I be in heaven, any ideas what type of games are availble for free, and a site?
Thanks!!
try emule or kazaa best places for free appz
Well I am 50 years old and everybody that sees the xda young or old are amazed at its capabilities, I have satnav with tomtom 2 voice directions, a whole library of books, some good games, mp3s, codewallet for all my credit card details, wap access, the sky astronomy package which gives me planetary positions and interfaces to my telescope, click on a star/planet and the scope slews to it, and I also carry the odd short film on sd card. How can anybody fail to be impressed. Oh and its a phone too. And a dictionary, and a translator, talk into it in English and it talks in French/Spanish/German, providing the phrase is in its database.
Well on the way down to college on Tuesday few behind me was having a good laugh at this ring tone on this Nokia with a Poilce Siren then a some very desorted lyrics, never heard such good things from a phone, well except Wav files on XDA, its far ahead of that phone
I hope PDA Phones are pushed and marketed to hell, which is looking like they will be
Cant wait to get mine in my hands
Hi people, had my TyTN for over 2 weeks now (HTC Branded tytn....HT628 serial number)
Just have a few questions:
1. Are upgrades easily done on the TyTN
2. What are these 'ROMs' i keep hearing about??
3. What KILLER apps do people use on it??
(excuse my newbie-ness)
Thanks.
You cant be serious...or you simply just have more money than brains.
1. Yes, but be prepared to re-install all of your apps.
2. Roms are basically the core operating system for the TyTn's, Roms and upgrade go hand in hand(ie, to upgrade your tytn you put a new rom on it)
3. Check out SBSH software and SPB software, both companies make alot of software alot of people use, there is also an abundant amount of freeware out there.
For reviews of applications, pop over here
For a list of apps that are considered 'must haves' check here

I'm sorry has my asking questions on a forum offended you in some way?? why bother replying if uve got nothing constructive to say.
Umm, I just got my first cell phone, a LG C2000 about 3 months ago, and have yet to get a TyTN, all I know is before I spend $750 on a device, I read reviews and such, and the first review I read something about ROM's, and well I didnt know about ROM's, but a very easy search on google led me to the answer, and what do you know...during my research, I came across many forums with "must have" software for the TyTN, I'm not out to flame people..but when someone apparently has not even helped themselves at all, I just cant always keep my mouth shut.
It's like this dude bought a TyTN cause it looked cool, showed it off to his friends for a few weeks, and now wants to know how to use it.

I read PLENTY of reviews....even saw the mobilitytoday.com podcast about it...it was such reviews that drew my attention to it in the first place. I was going for the P990i. Dont tar people with the newbie brush when all they ask is a simple set of questions! Im sure there are only a minority (when compared to the size of the userbase) of people who actually know anything about ROMs and upgrading. How many O2 customers have an XDA and arent aware of what ROMs do/are....MANY im sure.
Im just sorry my first post became the bait of a flameboy..........rant over

mrvanx - On behlaf of PPC users everywhere, welcome to the show. There are a lot of useful forums out there and plenty of people willing to help out without judgement or frivilous flaming. Anyway, have you gotten your TyTN to make video calls yet? Here in the US, Cingular doesn't support this feature so I haven't been able to use it. Just wondering.

Yer ive only made one video call so far as not many people i know have a 3G handset, unfortunatly it wasnt cross network so im yet to see if the networks here in the UK (T-Mobile, Vodefone, 3, Orange and O2) are cooperating with eachother...(MMS wasnt FULLY cross network until about a year into it!!!!)
The person in question has a clamshell-type Samsung handset and the video quality between was brilliant! My UMTS reception is patchy here in York but it was fine. Ended up getting cut off as the other person lost thier UMTS. As said above this was a video call O2 to O2 so couldnt comment on other networks just yet.
Speedwise my UMTS connection has been as high as 944kbps when tested on bandwidthplace.com which i thought was astonishing!!!
When im out of range for 3G it just reverts back to standard GSM and GPRS.
P.S: Thanks for the encouraging words.

Reception of TyTN vs Wizard
Hi folks,
Any other input on the reception of the TyTN and it's variants (8525)? I've got myself a KJAM and an 8125 and I have horrible reception at home. Even did the antenna hack - it adds a little, but still spotty.
I'd like to upgrade to the 8525 for 3G and increased processing power, but the cost isn't worth it for me if the reception is still as bad as the Wizard/KJAM/8125.
Thanks.
Is it a bad thing, I ordered the HTC TYTN from my Service Provider and I don't even have it yet and I am looking for tweaks, hacks and accessories.
I found this forum from Howard Forums. The Wiki for my phone (on this site) helped me tremendously. So thank you to all the contributors of that.
Well my first order of business will be getting Streets and Trips Mobil running on it and for that I am going to need a GPS. From what I gather reading other threads a wired GPS is a bad idea if not futile. So Bluetooth it is. I did a quick Ebay search for a few models I saw mentioned here, and came up with some very wide ranges in prices. I am leery of buying a "cheap" one from Ebay as I have made that mistake before thinking I am getting a great deal only to find out what I bought was flaky at best and junk at worst. So I am looking for some feedback from other people running Bluetooth GPS units on there Hermes type phones.
Ok next question,
Rom, Burnt, Fried, Baked, Cooked, I think they are coming to make me away he ha ha, to the funny farm........ (you have to be older (30-40) to get the joke.
Windows Media 6 sounds awesome, however I don't really want to brick my phone on my first tweak. What is the safest way to update from WM5 to WM6. I am on Rogers AT&T in Canada and would like to maintain most if not all of the features that will come with the phone. From what I understand the Rogers Branded phones have some "unique" registry settings that could be altered when you update to WM6. I am willing to loose them if I have to, in order to update, however if there is a way to keep them I would really prefer it. Specifically the new Named Caller ID. (displays the name of people calling you even if you don't already have them in your phone book)
What should my first tweaks be, are there any really good "to die for" apps out there......
My first love in life is (my wife) however for this topic lets just say cars and driving, hence why I want streets and trips.
My second love is computers and modding. I am also into movies and video's, so big storage will be a must. I want to be able to bring along a couple gig of music and video's with me.
I hope I have not driven anyone away with so many questions. If you can answer even one of my questions that would be helpful, if you can answer them all YOU ARE A GOD.
Thanks in Advance for listening to a newbie post.
first off.. welcome to the forums.. believe me when i tell you youll have tons of fun on new your toy..
secondly, i think you should take time knowing your new toy before you delve into tweaking or playing with it...
thirdly, read up and not until then and coupled with you being comfortable with your device should you consider starting messing with it..
HERE IS A GOOD START....
OF COURSE YOU SHOULD NOT MISS THIS ONE..
hope this helps you for a start and good luck.
oopss. . .forgot addressing your subject line.. (got engrossed reading the body of your post that i do not think mentioned anything about the subject line )
i would suggest you look into BT-818, its small, compact has long battery life (32 hrs. and 32 satellites) and the battery can be replaced by you. i know a lot of members here will recommend something smaller but for me i think being practical without sacrificing functionality is essential..
Thank You Bapski for the quick reply, I have spent the last 2hrs reading through those pages and I don't think I have even scratched the surface of it all. Finding the FTP site link is going to save me a lot of time searching for files.
I hear alot about Black Magic, and CID unlocking. I came across a thread about how to unlock the phone without having to really do much. I guess this is a pretty simple procedure?
Well I have lots more reading to do thanks again for the links. (And I thought I covered most of it in the Wiki)
Well the phone arrived today.
I gave it a charge for about 5hrs and have been kinda playing with it.
Edited because I figured out how to fix my contact issues.
Now next up is upgrading to WM6. I really want to do this upgrade before I spend hours learning and tweaking WM5 which sounds like it will be a waste of time. However I am terrified of bricking the phone. I have downloaded the CID Unlocker and although it sounds as easy as hell, I want to make sure that the unlocker won't kill my phone. What numbers should I get off the phone to verify all this.
Are there any version numbers off of the phone that would / should be added to a database for anyone else to compare with older phones. I skimmed over a database that listed some phones with problems and what phones had what installed. This is a Rogers Branded HTC TYTN phone.
I am not a complete Tech Moron, I just don't know anything about Phones. (I run an Apache Web Server as well as an FTP Server and a separate Media Server)
If anyone has suggestions or thoughts about the safest way to update the phone with the least amount of risk, I would be really interested in hearing about it. I am going to do the update at some point its just a matter of me being comfortable enough with the software to do the updates.
P.S. I found a local supplier for a Bluetooth GPS for $79 which I will be picking up next weekend. Not sure how your board posts URL's so here it is straight up. http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=23763&vpn=IBLUE737&manufacture=i-Blue

safest way is to change your bootloader if your going to flash... its pretty much simple if you have a stable computer and dont pull out your USB while your flashing.... if you dont have enought confidents yet, read more about your phone....
best safety precaution we do here is to install hard spl 2.10.. with this installed, it is said youd be able to avoid bricking (unbrick) your phone if something goes wrong.
safest and fool proof way is to read MRVANX GUIDES
follow all instructions to the letter and youll never go wrong.. i know thats how i did it.. just choose whatever ROM there is on the guides for a start and then once you get the hang of it, you can try other ROM's as you please..
Ok my first ever change to the phone, Hard SPL 2.10 v7 has now been installed on the phone. Followed the guids exactly and worked like a charm. I have not ran any "unlocking software" yet. I guess that is my next step and then loading the official HTC WM6 update.
Yee Haw, I am rocking out now.......
Ok I did the Bootload update.
Then followed the guides again
I updated the Radio and then updated to Fara's Super Clean WM6.
Dang I was all paranoid for nothing, most of this is just click through and go.
There was a few times the Phone asked me questions that were not listed on the guides, but I think I just said, Yes Allow every time it asked anything and all went well.
congratulations... good to hear everything worked out well...
congratulations.. good thing your upgrade went well...
I updated to radio ver 1.41 and am having issues with network connection. GPRS does not want to work and when I am connected to my home wireless router it is spotty at best. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. As well as the range seems to be drastically reduced.
Any suggestions?

try 1.50........
Thanks, I will try that.
if that dont work try 1.50.10/1.51
I installed Radio version 1.50 and everything is or at least seems to be working great. Lots of things that I am tweaking in WM6.
2 things,
When I had the Rogers WM5 installed I had a a type of Windows Messenger Installed locally that worked well, and now it is gone. Where Do I re-download that from. I have done some searching and only came up with a web based messenger for Mobil phones that loads in I.E.
Next question How do I do batch text messaging. On my old Motorola Razr I could simple compose a message open up my contacts and then go through and check off all the names I wanted to send it to and hit send and it would send to all the people. However in the TYTN I have to add each person separately.
Is there a way to send batch text message with the TYTN?
Ya know I think this thread has moved far enough off topic that it is time that I just start a new thread in diffrent section for all my "newbie questions"
I would like to offer a huge thanks to all that helped me out the past few days learning a new piece of tech. I am still going to have a lot of questions as time goes on. So you can keep your eyes out for me in other Hermes sections. If anyone ever has a car question drop me a PM.
For a Bluetooth GPS you seriously cant go wrong with this:
http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Blueto...9?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1188928696&sr=8-2
Garmin mobile 10.
Its small, very small.. easy to use. It uses garmins software on your phone. Its not very expensive. has at least a 22hour battery.
It checks traffic when planning routes.. it can tell you gas prices for nearby gass stations, you can check weather, tell it to avoid almost anything.. its just amazing.
Just to update this thread, I did finally buy a Bluetooth GPS. Final price was $61 including shipping. Its a JRT-29 the website, http://www.gpswindow.com/en/picture.asp?idtype=JRT28 kinda sucks, but the unit itself is really nice. About the size of an old slide out tray matchbox. 42ch and works perfect. Came with a car charger USB Cable and software to use it on a PC as well as a mobil phone. (did not need the software for my phone, just my PC)
Thanks again for everyones help.
Basically the title please
If so can anyone recommend a good guide please ?
Also does it require me rooting my phone ?

Discussion of warez are more than frowned upon in this community, so you should end this discussion here and now. However, regardless of the possibilities, Copilot has an activation system that is tied to the phone, so go and buy it because it is *fantastically* cheap for what it is!

Yes, Copilot downloads the maps to SD card, so you do not have to be data connected to use it.
On a recent trip from Portsmouth UK, to Alicante ES, Copilot performed so well that I didn't need to use the dedicated Navman unit I was planning on using - which is good because it's route was some 4 hours quicker than that offered by Navman, and proved to be an eerily accurate estimation!

In short: Yes it can. With internet connection you can get additional services such as traffic data etc.
EDIT: Here's their website: http://www.alk.eu.com/copilot/android/
Here's a youtube video review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCkSsf85PX0
PS. Please support the developers and buy this app. It's quite an amazing navigation app and it is not even that expensive as the other ones tend to be.

If you have bought an app through the Market then it will remember it forever. That means that you can install it as many times as you want. For free.
You will not get any other answer from me. Although there is other answers.

well, because some of us can't buy apps, Checkout not supported in my country, so i kinda have little choice....i need a good docs app, i need editing, i am open to suggestions on how to get it and what are my free options
why dont u try GDocs? Syncs to your google docs a/c and u can add new txt files and have it synced to your com and finish the editing there. better than nothing.
GDocs (Free app)
please DONT steal copilot!
I am also in a country that can not buy apps. That is no reason to steal from developers who put their effort in building an app that is really worth its money. I used market enabler as advised elsewhere on the forum and that works just fine!
Seriously, I bought copilot and have not regretted it any minute. Though some people complained about the support, I went through the support when I could not download it immediately (credit card validation pending, another google problem) and they answered me (after one week, when the problem already solved itself, but that shows that they are getting busy and that is a good sign). To me, copilot is the kind of app that demonstrates the possibilities of android as a business model.
So bite the bullet, and see for yourself how ridiculously cheap it is for what you get!

Someone a suggestion how to install XAP files?

Apart from Chevron and MS App Hub, there is currently no other way of unlocking your Lumia
Ok that's bad, for navigation i will use my HD2 again with Navigon.
Thanks so far!
Nokia Drive works fine for me
Yeah, what is wrong with Nokia Drive? Is it because you still need a data connection when running? They will release an update soon that should fix this for full offline routing...
What's the use of a smartphone without data anyway? Nokia Drive doesn't use much bandwidth to look up the directions. Everything else is already stored on the phone.
It depends if you are in area with a connection. I found it baffling that I downloaded the maps and then still had to be connected!

M8, The Lumia in the app department... is weak as ****, I've spent about £100 on apps which i've already got for free on other phones, it makes me sick.
The one which pushed me over the edge is the Sonos app, free on every other platform!!! And it's actually called "Sonos", on windows phone, it's called "Phonos" and it was £7.99p haha, that's a joke, at the rate i was going, i could have bought 6 Lumia's in the space of a year.
I'm sorry but with that in mind I would rather spend my money on something i'm going to enjoy, something which if i want to, i can download an app and try it out and remove it if i don't, i can assign a ringtone to whatever the hell i like, because it's my bloody music, so i bought an evo 3d, best phone i've ever used.
And for the record, Nokia drive sucks ass, major ass, Co-Pilot Live 8 with speed cameras built in, now that's a sat nav, no need for data, just GPS, locks in about 5 seconds.
The lumia came close, and it made me love it, but then it made me hate it, give it cash and eventually resent it, sad really.
I'm giving my Lumia away, it's boxed downstairs, i have no need for it.
You do realise that the Sonos app, 'Phonos' is not official, and that's why it's cost a ton rather than free? It's someone making money while Sonos get their act in gear.
Don't like the Nokia maps, want Navigon as on my HD2, very good app (premium version!).
What if you are i a different country like Belgium or Germany, don't wanna roam costst a lot (-;

For free obviously because Navigon is in the Marketplace.
If you use it a lot, it's only normal to pay for the software.
yep but with every other device i had i must buy new navigation software.
I have TomTom & Sygic but they don't develop on WP7, so you are a brave one and buy everything? don't use XDA cracked roms, xapfile install and many other options here provided?

I don't think XDA support piracy.

Can I have it? I've got a friend who really wants one but can't afford it
Posting and providing cracked roms is not piracy?

I do, but with all software: when I use it a lot I buy it or support the developer.
