[Q] SD Card Issues on Mac with custom ROMS - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone tell me if there is a stable Froyo Rom (I prefer a stock looking ROM with no TouchWiz), that will not brick my phone the second I mount my SD card(s) on my Mac? I haven't rooted again yet after a full Odin stock restore back to 2.1, but when I do, I usually use the LagFix found on the Market. Is that my problem? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks all!

This SD problem is fixed whit the Sd_fix file ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833024 ) , i had the same problem and now is fixed whit this file... for now my only problem is the phone memory is not recognized by iphoto to upload the pics to my mac.

Okay so I checked out that ROM, is that a stock Froyo ROM with no TouchWiz? And what root method should I use, or does that even matter?

So really it doens't matter the root method, it's just the ROM that affects the SD card issue, got it! I have used that ROM you suggested and it was pretty sick, but I didn't like the red and grey theme. just wasn't feelin it. Anywho, thanks for your help.

Few Basic Questions

I bought my Ace week ago .. I wasn't aware of the Jargon used in the forums now i think i m getting hang of it .. So let me know i have correct understanding of that jargon as i am planning to flash my phone with the latest fw version and gonna root it as well (wanna be a little adventurous with my phone .. hope i dont mess it ) I want to know the benefits of rooting and upgrading to 2.3.4 .. The benefits i know is that u can install new applications on SD card which will save up internal memory and make it a little faster .. Video recording at higher resolution .. What else ? Let me know about the issues faced by you guys for upgrading it to the latest fw .. Heard there is some delay at screen lock .. And if i upgrade the firmware does it format my phone memory or memory card ? if not then will it affect the existing applications and how will i save up the internal memory eaten up by existing applications .. Should also let you guys know that i did a firmware upgrade via Kies coupla days back which prompted as done successfully but still it shows up the same 2.2.1 .. So i wanted to know was there any problem with the upgrade or it was some other firmware upgrade not related to Gingerbread upgrade? Sorry for asking too many questions
Upgrading to 2.3.4 will unfortunately remove your applications but wont format your SD Card. 2.3.4 is a lot faster then in froyo (2.2.1). The only problem is the lock screen delay. The clock at the lock screens font is different and the copy and paste is better. New download app to manage your downloads. Improved power management and app control. New icons on status bar. Thats what I can think of.

yup, with leaked gingerbread 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 (including custom roms based on both) there will be lag at lockscreen

i think flashing will just format ur internal memory, not ur sdcard. but it always a good practice to backup ur whole data. better to be safe than sorry.

check ur baseband version, maybe just changed there but not android version.
i dont feel any lag screen delay, infact i installed adw launcher and still no lags at all.
You should try upgrading and rooting your phone. If you feel uncomfortable, then you can flash back your old fw, it takes only 5 mins!

Im taking a wild guess by your username that you are Danish, if so there is a upgrade to 2.3.3 wich is right for your country code, it should be available now via KIES with this upgrade you wont loose any apps allready installed on the phone if you cannot receive it via KIES you can also grab it and install it manually with the one-package method in ODIN.
Intersting i think ill be doing the upgrading and rooting after i get some instruction from you guys .. My baseband version is S5830JXKC1 .. Sam fit says region unknown and in tutorial on how to flash samsung ace the firmware written S5830XXKPH is European .. So would it be fine if i flash that firmware ? And let me know which firmware is more stable and faster 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 ? @albert thats my name .. am from Pakistan and there ve been no 2.3.3 updates..I just want to improve my Ace performance as i find it sluggish sometimes which maybe due to internal memory eaten up by applications .. Rooting will allow me install applications on SD card right ? And how do i make up a backup for my existing stock 2.2.1 to be on safe side .. its not rooted
yes.. rooting combined with link2sd, or with darktremore a2sd should be good for you
and to backup ur froyo, read this
Okay so finally i flashed to 2.3.4 XXKPH and rooted my phone using hubix's tutorial (excellent guide for newbies) . I formatted my sd card as well after rooting my phone .. So atm my phone is completely empty because i wanted some guidance from you guys to make sure every application i install now on my phone goes directly to my sd card instead of internal phone memroy .. Secondly can any one explain me what are ROMS ? Do we follow the same procedure for flashing roms as was explained in hubix's tutorial ? Does it clean up internal phone memory if we flash any rom ?

[Q] Updating to Gingerbread :)

hi guys,

flash GB bootloaders then you can flash any GB rom over whatever rom
theres ways to do it without the bootloaders but you'll get rainbow screen on boot and wont be able to see recovery
Flash using GB bootloader,it can fix rainbows and use any GB ROM

bootloaders 1st
cant flash straight to a GB rom from froyo without them
only rom i know of that can be is SH3.3, can flash that from froyo without them then flash whatever other GB rom you want through rom manager i think (i did this because i dont trust odin)
some have .tar files so you can flash them through odin to get to GB but voodoo sometimes messes up so you still need the bootloaders to go to recovery and disable it if it does
easiest way's to flash the bootloaders then just flash whatever GB over whatever
thanks again
i have flashed using gb boot loader
i am going to try Simply Honey 4.0 Revolution(JVQ GB 2.3.4) custom rom.

all GB roms are taken from i9000 because we dont have an official GB for our phones
dont know what its because of why calls dont work for some people, they worked for everyone on 2.3.3 i think
dont think radio works because there isnt any radio drivers for our phone so just uninstall it
video calling is there for the people that have put an FFC into their vibrant, it doesnt change anything
MIUI FTW
If you wanna flash a GB ROM trust me MIUI 1.29.11 is the way to go. You will be surprised how nice it is. Just give it a try.
P.S. I flashed it coming from a 2.2 ROM (trigger 3.3) without flashing bootloader. Just did the same old flashing process (wipe, wipe, wipe)
well,
i am on 2.3.4 and i want to reverse back to a 2.3 rom "Team Toxic "Crazy8".
so i do have to install old bootloaders according to them.
anyone got a idea how to do that ?
thanks

i came from bionix 131 was a great rom but get ready for bad assness
1. assuming you have cwm, flash cwm recovery, pick vibrant mtd, click yes then chose clockworkmod 2.x
2. go to download rom, go to cyanogen nightlies and pick perhaps the highest build number unless it has really bad remarks.
3. do the usual clear cache, clear dalv, flash it, fix permissions
let it boot and sit for a few and hold on to your panties...lol
nope gps does not work. but from what i remember bionix gps was pretty spotty as well
dont forget to wipe data, anyways reading some of the posts. simply galaxy is cool, love the blue but cm7 is waaaaay smoother and highly customizable. and you dont need to flash gb bootloaders. and if you want to go back once you flashed gb loaders, your gonna gave to get froyo boots back, from what i remember. cm7 has made it too easy to flash, was kind of tricky in the beginning, but did it for the fun of it

[Q] Flashing rom from Froyo

Hi, I successfully flashed my T-mobile Vibrant about twelve months ago to a custom 2.2 Froyo rom (Trigger 3.2 Final). It's a great rom and EVERYTHING works. However lately I've read rave things said about newer roms such as ICS passion. It's been a while and I'm still a noobie at this so my question is:
What is the easiest way to get to ICS passion from my current custom Froyo rom ? Thanks ~ Chris
hi,
Its very easy to get ICS running on your vibe. There may be various ways to proceed. I ll give you what I did (AFTER failing for 5-6 times )
Odin back to stock (It may be not necessary. But I started from the beginning which is better AFAIK )
Then stored ICS ROM (ICZen which in my case) and update.zip (CWM) on internal SD
then flashed GB Bootloaders (It also may/ may not necessary. But I did it b/c I already had many failed attempts)
Then flashed CM7 first
After that flashed ICS on top of it
Worked at last for me
NOTE: Please read relevant instructions provided by ROMs b/c flashing one may differ from flashing another.
You can find more information if you run into problems in my thread [SOLVED]Cannot install ICS ROM--please HELP

Happy Flashing
You may just want to read this before flashing ICS. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1580902

^^^ Truth
And I would suggest staying away from Passion. It is based on 4.0.3 and there was a pretty significant code upgread when ICS went to 4.0.4.
IIRC, Passion is the last ROM that still uses 4.0.3 and is probably why it is dead now (but for some reason lives in infamy on YouTube and Google Search).
Haarsh's way works just fine but here is another method as another option too.
Thanks
Thanks for the replies. This is why I subscribed to the forum.
mmm... I see a few pitfalls ahead.
Background info from me is that I can't use Odin on my Linux computer. Never really got into Heimdall. I flashed my first rom by downloading the rom zip file and put it on my phone's internal sd card then let clockwork do the rest, ie nandroid backup and flash the rom from the update zip. I'd like to do the same again.
Ok, it's my understanding that anything above 2.2 needs the GB bootloader so the first step is to install that over my Trigger rom. I think Trigger would still run with the GB bootloader at that stage. Next download an update zip of a rom of my choice, put it on my phone's sd, then flash it with Clockwork.
Seems to me that should work or am I missing something I wonder ?
You can flash the GB bootloader. Its backward compatible so it will work with any ROM currently available.
Download the .zip of the ROM you want, and any Gapps if applicable. Then just follow the instructions on page 1 of the ROM (OP).
The usual would be Wipe Data/Factory Reset, Clear Cache, Clear Dalvik. Flash ROM, flash Gapps, restart. The instructions will tell you all you need to know.
If something goes wrong, give us a shout. That's what we're here for.
help me plz

[Q] Regarding Rom: 4.2.2 LiquidSmooth version 2.1

Hello
I have this rom in my rom slot 3, just as I been told trough the official thread.
If I do a full backup of the ROM in Safestrap after installing all my programs and settings, can I then Restore it to the Stock Rom Slot?
I have always done this with all the other custom rom's with no problem, I do not want more than one ROM on my phone, call me weird...
Wouldn`t do that if I were you... These custom roms are hard coded to only work on specific slots. In case of Liquid Smooth, it only works on slot 3 for now, but that will probably be fixed soon.
BTW, I`ve flashed CM 10.1 accidentally on my stock slot (Was on custom ICS rom) and now I can`t boot on stock slot, only on CM 10.1 (slot 1) and Liquid Smooth (slot 3).
Facing some issues, trying to solve them, but no success so far...

When this happens to me I always swallow my pride and go back to stock via RSDlite.
But I have always done like I said with all the custom roms, I have never had any problems after but the whole restore on stock rom slot.
But let's say, If I continue to use rom slot three. If I then go into Safestrap and format the stock rom slot, this will free up the space on mye phone right?
Not sure about that, but since you have usb working, you`ll always have RSD,.. My usb isn`t working, but I don't know if it's hardware or something messed up with stock slot...

What about making a backup file from the one rom you have working and restore it to stock rom slot? It will not boot on this slot at all?
I have been out in the dark maybe 100 times before, but I have never had usb not working??? Strange..
My case is that I'm on ICS on stock and on JB on rom slots...
I was wondering, did I mess my CID by installing JB over LATAM ICS, since there isn`t a LATAM JB release yet?
Anyways, sorry, completely out of topic here, so, let`s go to the point:
If you see me as a lab rat, you should know that I just tried flashing my working LiquidSmooth backup on stock slot, and didn`t work... At least for me...

Maybe you have to let the stock rom slot be, until there is a rot or rsd for Jelly Bean
Haha, lab rat!
I jus tried the same myself, but the device would not start so this does not work.
For now I have formated and wiped my stock rom slot, and I have liquid smooth in slot 3 wich will be my daily rom waiting for things to happen.

Some custom roms can be updatet sort of like your asking!
But you should make a habbit of always clean install custom roms, this way you get into troubles less often and the stability will often be better,,

You don't really need a good computer to flash back to stock, just a USB cable. The easiest way is to flash back to stock JFD 2.1 with Odin and then root your phone with update.zip B, reboot to recovery and reinstall packages twice then flash the ROM (twice also if going to JB 4.2). Here is a link for both flashing to stock and rooting with update.zip B http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028 . If you decide to stay on 2.2 you will have to use the modified 3e recovery zip, I have never done this so can't really explain how to do it, here is the link though http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423.

Yes I rooted my phone with Update.zip B, it doesn't actually root but it gives you CWM and you can flash a custom ROM, they all come pre rooted. You should really flash back to stock if possible, it's very easy from stock 2.1. I'll do some research and see what I can come up with but stock 2.2 has a bunch of issues with rooting and installing CWM, this is why everyone recommends flashing to stock 2.1 (JFD)
Edit - it appears superoneclick 2.3.1 works for some people on stock Froyo (2.2). Here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146645 If you get it rooted on stock 2.2 you will still have to do the 3e recovery step FYI

hey sorry for the late reply I just used samsungs skies to upgrade mine to froyo just put your phone in kies mode then plug it in run the updater and it should work fine and I got the root to work thanks for the help only problem I got now is making it boot into clockworks recovery so I can flash my room im still working on that ill post back when I can get it to work
Thanks for the reply. Sad news. I used Kies Mini to update and everything went fine until the reboot. well it didnt reboot, my phone is officially bricked. I bought a JIG to see if it would help wake it in Download but it does not. I have read that you can open the phone and do some soldering to get the phone back but it seems like too much for this phone. If you have any suggestions that would be fantastic.. Thanks again for your reply.
