[Q] Callers can't hear me. Help! - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am as of recent having a call volume problem. I can hear them and they can barely hear me. My only work around has been using speakerphone or if you can believe this plugging in a regular set of stereo headphones (no mic. I lost the headphones that came with the phone) and speaking into the regular mic hole on the bottom of the phone. Then for whatever reason my levels go up radically and they can hear me. I have tried all the "service mode" temporary code tweaks without any luck. I have rebooted just in case I had f'd up any of the settings to put them back to default. Any ideas people? What other info might you need for me to isolate this problem. I am running xipher's j16 rom and it was working fine before. Also, it's obviously not a hardware issue or the mic wouldn't work better in speakerphone or headphone mode.

anybody?
Jeez. Thanks guys

Dude I had a phone that did that I had to get a replacement its the microphone
Still flashing , thanks to odin & tw

pinky over the mic?
I'm being serious... I have done it.
try another rom just to be sure. Any misbehaving apps?

[Q] Problem with Ear Buds.

Hi Everyone...Question where is the code behind the earbuds? Reason I am asking is that I plug my earbuds in and I can hear just fine but the person on the other end can't hear me. If I set TTY to VCO it works but audio stinks. Is this a Radio/ROM/KErnel issue??? Or do I need to unroot and take it back lol...someone please let me know!!!
Thanks!!!
it can be either or...
i found when using some AOSP roms(mainly older versions of CM7) people had a hard time hearing me.
currently i'm using CM7 1.6.1 and that's not an issue anymore.
In case anyone sees this it was actually a hardware problem, got a replacement phone and used the same ROM/kernel and all worked perfectly...the tech said that the saulder connections on the ear buds goes out easily...

Having a similar issue with ALL types of wired headsets. Posted in the General section and hoping to get some devs attention in it. Did some general Google searching and apparently by manufacturer design (thanks HTC!), when headsets are plugged in (not headphones mind you, diff is if it includes a mic), the mic disables on both the phone and the mic in your chord. You can bypass the disabling of the phone mic by changing the TTY mode but the quality is poor and still does not allow you to use your headset mic.
If you use regular headphones, the phone will show the headphone icon (again, not the headSET icon (with the boom mic in the pic)) and you can still use the mic from the regular phone. The problem I have here is it still requires me to walk around with my phone in the air as if it were on speakerphone.
I'm assuming devs can tweek this and I am 99% positive, previous headsets with my TB did NOT have this problem. I've used a mix of GB, AOSP, and Froyo roms (current), and have NOT found a way to get my headset (with mic built into the chord) to work. Extremely frustrating.

Aria earpiece speaker issues - HELP!

OK, so my earpiece speaker quit working most of the time. I figured it was just a broken part, and I ordered another one. However, when the new one got here, I discovered that it required removing the screen to replace it, and also requires that tri-wing screwdriver that nobody has, so I put that job on the back burner.
Then I discovered that with the call in Speaker mode, I can hear just fine.
So, it appears the earpiece speaker is not actually broken, right? I can hear it when the phone is in speaker mode (although it's real loud... lowest volume is still louder than the loudest normal earpiece volume). So that speaker MUST be working, if I can hear it... but just not working when not in speaker mode.
In that case, does this indicate something software-fixable with the earpiece speaker?
And more on point: is there any way to force the phone to always or by default answer and make calls in speaker mode?
When the phone is in 'speaker phone' mode, the sound is coming out of the speaker on the BACK of the phone (next to the camera), not the earpiece speaker. So if you are hearing sound just fine from the speaker on the back of the phone, that would just confirm that the problem is in fact the earpiece speaker.
I've had this problem too with putting the speaker in. It took a bunch of tries to realize that you really need to make sure the speaker snaps up in there and remains tight when you put the phone back together, if it slips out a bit it wont work.
Also, it's kinda hard to figure out if you've put it in upside down, so try flipping it a couple times to see what works. Look at the dust marks for evidence of how it was originally in there.
Best of Luck!

Maybe on YOUR phone, but on MY phone, the sound is coming from BOTH the speaker on the back, AND the earpiece speaker.
I mean, I guess it is remotely possible that somehow the sound coming form the rear speaker manages to make its way to the cavity where the earpiece speaker is and sound perfect, crystal-clear, and just like the earpiece speaker should sound. I find it unlikely, but it's possible, I suppose. I don't know any way to tell.
I found an app that will put the phone in default-to-speakerphone mode (Car Mode). This works kind of ok, but the problem is that plugging in a headset doesn't override it. Of course the whole purpose of this app is to keep it from going into headset mode when you plug something into the headphone jack. I just need to have the phone simply turn on the "speakerphone" speaker when I answer or place calls in normal mode.

I agree that it's difficult to tell, but that must be what's happening. The two speakers are just half an inch apart and are only separated by a few internal components that do little to muffle sound. I don't think it's unusual that the sound would be clear when putting your ear to the front top of the phone. I definitely admit though that it's difficult to verify this -- I was trying to find an app that could play a sound directly to individual speakers one at a time but I couldn't find anything.
But, even if we assume that you're correct and the earpiece speaker works, that doesn't really leave you with many options. If it's a software issue, then you should do a Nandroid backup and then try doing a 100% clean install to see if the problem disappears or not. If it doesn't, then it must be a hardware issue. If the hardware issue isn't a matter of simply replacing the earpiece speaker, then it's not something you would be able to fix anyway.

I imagine replacing the earpiece speaker would probably fix it.
However, it's just too risky for me to have to remove the screen and digitizer in order to replace the speaker, when I have a workaround that is working.
Anyone know of a way to replace the speaker without removing the screen/digitizer?

Weird issues with mic volume *only in calls*

Hello,
I recently got a Galaxy S II i9100M model unlocked, and am trying to use a Rogers (Canadian) SIM card in it.
The phone works great, and I am love the phone. However, I am having a weird issue with calls that I am hoping someone can shed some light on.
The microphones on the phone work OK - I can use the Voice Record app just fine, and do speech recognition through Google's built in app and Vlingo just fine.
However, anytime I am on a phonecall, my outgoing voice can be hardly heard. I can hear the other person just fine but they can hardly hear me. It's like the mic volume is turned down or something is put infront of it when I call only. I've even tried using a wired headphone/mic combo to see if that would work, and no luck with that either!
Does anyone know why the mic would work fine, except on calls? I've already tried this fix with no luck.
I am still running the stock Bell firmware. Could the firmware somehow be detecting a different network and not letting me call? Should I try a different firmware?
If it's a hardware issue, I wouldn't be able to use the mic for voice recording would I?
As a bit of an update, I've tried new firmware, and still nothing.
Most recording apps and the speaker phone use the upper mic. I think the only thing that uses the lower mic is regular phone calls. Could be the rubber housing on the lower mic isn't seated properly. You'll either have to try a bit of phone surgery yourself, or take it to service to look at.
Thanks ctomgee. How would an external headset be affected then?
Do you know where I can find the info on fixing the rubber housing?
Oh, an EXTERNAL headset has the same issue? I missed that part. Hmm... That's weird.
As for the phone surgery, look at this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21314046

I just bought s3 recently and have faced mic issues, its not able to pick up voice easily, have to use the other hand to cover my mouth and phone for it to be able to catch my voice!!
I am going through mic issues.
I had a mic problem with my first S3 during phone calls. I couldn't do anything about it everyone was saying they couldn't hear me.
(The sim I am using is an British UK O2 micro simcard that I used in a iphone 4, cheap samsung, and samsung S2 previously with no problems at all.)
I then returned the phone to the T-mobile shop retailers, they said it was rare and not a common fault.
My new one is doing the exact same thing, I didn't update it nor is there a new update.
Can someone please help as I am lost. Thank you.

s3 mic problem
im having same problems n im on my third 1, all with the same problems. just been through all setting n nothing, waiting to hear back from my network provider (3). good phone but really annoyed with this problem now, everything is ok i put on loud speaker but this is no use when im tryin to run a business.......
I thought I was the only one facing the issue . The handsfree using the wired headset is completely faulty and the other party can hardly hear you . However sometime it works.
I tried some options ..
1. Dont insert the wired headset in the middle of the call it wont work.
2. Insert the wired headset and then dial the number - this seems to work most of the times
3. Accepting the call while the wired headset is inserted - this seems to work.
Not sure what the solution is - anyone able to resolve it ?
not the best voice receptions by the mic....but i havent got any complaints from the receiving end...and audio recording not great but better than the s2..used both the phones for quiet long
I have same issue. Other party doesn't hear me most of the times clearly. They say that I sound like i'm using speaker mode and I'm walking in the room with bucket in my head.
I used some kind of phonecall recording app and from there I can hear myself quite clearly. Maybe it is related to service provider?
Now switched to gsm mode only to see does it make difference.

Seems like noice cancellation needs to be disabled. Worked for me :good:
Try turning noise reduction off , in the call settings section

I also have the same issue. But when i go to uncheck the box I am not allowed to do so. I see it is checked but with light green colour and i cannot uncheck it. Any suggestions?
I am not rooted.... Does this affect?
mic problem in S3
M also having t same problem...hav done all the ways explained above...but still in trouble....sometimes mic works great but sometimes it dont...
microphooooone hole
I have a solution guys. Use left hand when phone call or grab it just for upper part. You are covering small hole for microphone.
I have like 1phone/year and never happened to me that i cover microphone hole when calling. With this one I have to stay focused to dont cover.... Its getting better but samsung engineers terribly overlooked this.
I phone like 4-5 hours per day, so i have habit to let phone just touch my hand and pretty much dont hold it at all. But when you hold it right hand your below thumb area of hand get to cover microphone hole....
and this is when someone else looses my voice over phone....
There is a microphone at the bottom and one at the top. How are you holding your phone? No matter what I do, I can't cover them up during a call.

Same here, cannot uncheck 'noise cancellation'
Wired headset only works when call made first, then audio plug inserted, even with BT disabled.
Multiple headsets mics not working that are known good headsets tested on other phones.

I have played with recording a bit lately (due to another issue of noise in audio recording) and I found that the upper microphone is disabled during a call from some reason. It is used in other video/audio recording though.

if I'm not mistaken the upper mic is working solo when ur on speaker during a call.
when u use the ear peace the buttom one is the main one and the upper one is for noise cancelation.

I only tried on speaker and the upper mic was definitely not catching anything - if I placed my hand over the bottom one, there was no sound from my side, even when I was talking directly to the upper mic.
Not sure whether it is a feature or a bug (there were some reports that the mics are switched by mistake on the software level) but if it is a feature then it is rather unfortunate one as it is quite common to hold the phone at its bottom.

You right, thats the reason for upper microphone - do compare signals from lower ant top, and eliminates noise (that coming more from top) from voice (that coming much more from low)
Other reason probably is stereo sound when making video...
PS
Comon guys, it is almost impossible to hide microphone with hand, left or right - does not matter. You should have palm from soft material as balloon to hide it Otherwise it is hardly possible by mistake, even if you try it is hard to do it

Microphone not working

I am on my 3rd HTC One and the microphone is still having problems. I've read other threads and none seems to provide a solution to the problem. People I talk to can hear me if I use speakerphone or a headphone, but not if I'm just on the regular headset. People can't hear me unless I scream really loud. Does anyone know how to fix this? I'm on stock rom.
Dumb question, does your headset have a mic on it? And have you made sure the volume is turned up with it connected?
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
My buddy is having the same issue. He is now on 4.3 and is still experiencing this issue. It's been occurring for a some time now. He is completely stock/never rooted. The phone itself has horrible mic quality when using the phone alone. If he turns on speakerphone or uses a headset the quality is crystal clear.
We did some playing around on how he calls and apparently it may be an issue with the noise cancelling sensor on the back of the phone (small hole). Try calling someone while covering and not covering this hole to test if your call quality improves. He ended up hold his phone while cuffing the back and it seems to be better. It's a dumb solution, but hopefully it works for you.
Does anyone know if there is an option to turn off noise reduction on the phone? Sorry for the question, i do not own an HTC One.
