Rooting a phone gives you and some apps administrative control over the phone..rooting is needed to flash custom recoveries and custom ROMs...check out the sticky in the general vibrant section and it should answer all your questions on how to root...good luck!

I downloaded OCLF version 2.0 and the root option has been removed. The only option I have available for rooting is un-root device. Any advice is appreciated

Get oclf from market root.
Then apply a lagfix makes phone faster then enjoy.
After a week of playing try out new roms

did i miss something here? can you re elaborate?`
next time pls post in the right section, thing belongs to Q&A section.
now on topic.. this has been asked so many times and to be honest you will not get a straight answer because it all comes down to preference. some roms are built for speed & power while some are build for long battery life.
so my advise to you is read through the comments of the roms posted try as many as you can til you find what is best to meet your needs. and when you get more experience flashing, you might want to try to mix and match ROMs, Kernels, and Modems to get exactly what your looking for.
peace~
I would have to say Axura 2.2 is by far the best that I have tried, very smooth and fast. At this point I have had no issues!!!
Sry I'm new to posting, I read only most the time.

what in froyo b.s. is going on here?
if you are looking for a fast rom to get straight to the point then download a stock rom and flash with odin but if the quest. is about fast rom then you have some choices. I personally feel that nero is speedy without a lag fix but so is axura. have fun testing. not enough new stuff for me to flash binge this weekend. lol
I like ginger clone
stock JL4!!! Everything just... works
ginger clone works really good for me. I dont even feel a lag fix is necessary for this one

I'm currently running the Ginger Clone. It's an easy install (assuming you're familiar with Clockwork). All you do is put the zip file on your internal sd card, boot to recovery, and install the zip. Easy as can be.
However, if you've never flashed a rom before, boot up Odin and get familiar with it. Some people make Odin seem like it's this programmer-only type of toy, but it's super easy and user-friendly as well. You just need to follow directions on what file to put where (.pit files go in the PIT slot and .tar files go under the PDA area). Odin is sort of a "holy ****, I can't do anything with this phone anymore" option. It will get you back to BONE stock, how your phone shipped.
I've been thinking about writing a guide to flashing and recovery if anyone thinks that would help? I'm kind of a novice myself, but I've familiarized myself enough with flashing and Odin that I think I could write a guide if there was a demand for it.
Man this is why new folks get discouraged with posting. Aside from the fact that a new guy posted in the wrong section (easy mistake) telling him to load a ROM not intended for his phone potentially bricking it is jacked up. Why would anyone do that? Even if you were successful loading it to your phone.

he best ROM will be one that will adapt to user needs.
So, just testing to see many different ROMs.
This type of thread does not help and may cause flames.
Although the idea is not bad, it is best you find out more about each ROM and draw your own conclusion!
Understands and expects to continue working with the XDA.

There is nothing more that you need to do per se. If you want to install JIT then go here.
what I meant was whats next for me? What do I do? What do I do with superuser and busybox? where and how do I get apps and install them? Sorry to bombard you guys with questions, but I'm sure by now you know that i'm extremely new to all these. Please help me learn! Thanks!
Install jit. Remove bloatware. Apply themes. Read forums for answers.
There its lots you can do.

Go to Market for apps, get some basic like Titanium Backup and Restore, APN backup and restore. Do a backup, include system settings. Just in case.
There are several threads on JIT, this is one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829660
Try just the JIT piece before trying optimization.
Read read read, then read some more, and don't be scared to play about with your phone! I'm all for helping people out, but what you want to know is quite basic stuff that you should be finding out by exploring your phone, and you should really have found out "what next" before actually rooting, and HERE is a good place to start.

This is a great post. Particularly the bold part. The majority of phones functionality that I know of, I've learnt from sitting down and playing with it. Most of the questions on this site can be figured out by just looking through all menus, screen etc.
Not having a go at you, but I don't really understand the "I've rooted my phone, now what?" type posts. Why root if you don't know what it does? Especially given that this forum is all about development rather than "make my phone look cool".
As XperiaX10iUser said, it helps to read as much as you can to get a basic grasp on things. Not trying to deter you from asking questions! Just helps to know what you're actually asking when you do.
Maybe you could start to read few of FAQs from the link of my signature?
Thanks everyone! I will do some research and play with my phone more. One of the reasons why I'm kind of scared to really play with my phone is because i'm afraid I might "brick" it =/ what are some of the things a Noob should avoid doing so he doesn't brick his device?

Props to SE, the X10 is pretty unbrickable. I haven't come across anyone who wasn't able to recover their phone. It can be a pain in the ass but do-able. If you do start playing with modding your phone, chances are you will get the yellow exclamation mark of doom at some point, but a little patience and some more reading and you'll be right! Chances are someone else has had the same issue too, so the search tool can be your friend.
The only tip I really have is don't "play" with it late at night when you know you're going to need your phone the next day!
I"m trying to use superoneclick that came with the JIT v2 files, however, I'm having looping problem with shellroot, and i have spend like an hour re-doing it, but it is still looping. Is it because I rooted using z4root? should I re-root it with superoneclick? I tried the "allow non-market apps" and it works fine. It only loops when I try to shell root. I have not tried the rooting option in superoneclick yet..... my debug is checked, and I press "charge phone" when the option pop up, but superoneclick is just killing and starting ADB server. Please help!!
also, I did some search for the multi touch option, but I couldnt find it. How do I enable ( or get) the multi touch option that was otherwise unavailable to un-rooted x10? Thanks for all the helps!

[Q] Root Samsung Fascinate

I am new to the forum and I am looking for the easiest way to root my fascinate sch-i500 phone. It has Froyo 2.2.1 currently. Any help is appreciated.
No worries. Use Z4 root, its a one click method which will do what you want rather easily. I posted a link below to a thread which includes the apk file and instructions on how to use it.
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
If you just want to root, find a one click root app. If you want to flash roms :
One tip: Read the stickies in the Development section. Your better off knowing what your doing instead of blindly following our advice. Sorry if this comes as a bit of a downer, but its for your own good.

^ Yup, he's right...The z4 root apk I posted does work 99.9% of the time without a hitch but sometimes things don't always go as planned and you may end up having to Odin because of it. Like TheSonicEmerald recommended read though the stickies and see what it will take to get your samsung fascinate back up and running again if something were to go wrong. It will save you a lot of time when it does happen, and believe me, if your going to be flashing roms and such things WILL go wrong. This isn't to scare you or anything, it is to assure you if anything goes wrong the forum is here to help. I've learned this one word of advice over my time here and thats, "YOU CAN NEVER BRICK AN ANDROID PHONE."I hope this helped you out a little. Happy modding.
I'm not new to rooting at all, I have rooted several devices. A friend of mine just got a Fascinate and all the info I'm finding seems old and depricated. Will this z4root still work? Is it simple enough for a newb to do? She really just wants root for the wifi tether for root users.
I couldn't agree more. I read a ton of stickies and it paid off big time

[Q] Root?? IDK?

I am brand new so I apologize for just jumping in here. My problem is I have tried many root methods and have yet to get root or close to it.
Thunderbolt
My firmware is 1.03.0000

any help would be much appreciated!!
If you use the method in jcase's thread, you simply copy+paste commands into the adb window

Sounds like you used the 3 click method. If that's how you want to do it I think you need to start at step 2.
You should do it through adb though since it sounds like you're a rooting rookie. It'll help in the long run.

JCase's method is a sticky in the development section btw.

Many thanks!
Thank you guys who posted! And a big thanks to those who developed all the materials for the root process.
I had apparently not done something right the first few times !! " CHECK MD5 SUMS!! for those of you who overlooked this every step it is important!! I now have root and as soon as I am set up proper on here I will be donating! Everyone should! These guys work hard to make it easier on the rest of us. Again many thanks!

Read post #4 of that thread. It has a WORKING link to the "[04/Jan][ROOTING/UNROOTING] DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit [v4.0](zergRush Exploit)

If you can't understand this and think it's not helpful, I would suggest you not root your phone. No offense.

I think he's fine. He's in the Netherlands, according to his profile, so T-Mobile Europe, not T-Mobile USA... so he SHOULD have an I9100(and does, going by the screen shot of his "About Phone" screen in post #1), not an SGH-T989.

You could have flashed a custom ROM withOUT rooting. Indeed, there are several custom ROMs that come already rooted.
EDIT: Sorry, ignore the above sentence. I'm mistaken. You need root. My bad.
Sorry, but in my opinion, you went backwards on this. You rooted for the sake of rooting, then wondered "what can I do now that I have root?", instead of rooting because you needed to do something that required root. But I digress, and I'll get off my soapbox now.
That said, several apps that require root that I like are DroidWall (control what apps can access the internet via 3g and/or wifi), SixAxis Controller (use a ps3 controller on your phone - great for emulators), AdAway (ad blocker), Chainfire 3D (for Tegra only compatible games), Root Explorer (essential for tweaking files in system folders), Startup manager (control what apps are allowed to start when the phone boots), Titanium Backup (backup/restore applications and their data, freeze apps), and SetCPU (undervolt/overclock/change governors/etc).
First of all i rooted for the apps that need rooting like titanium and some other apps.
Second, indeed for flashing because i always thought it was essential. (saw your edit)
Third, i read some things about security issues (dataleaks fe.)and thought i had to root to solve them.
Maybe i'm totally wrong but as i said before there is so much info that its hard to pick the right things out of the topics.
Thanx for your help. Learning more everyday

Flashing roms two methods ODIN or CWM and now MOBILE ODIN .
If you want to flash a custom rom you read that roms install instructions no more and no less .
Most but not all custom roms are flashed via CWM
CWM requires root and CWM install .
Root + CWM .
