[Q] Root?? IDK? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am brand new so I apologize for just jumping in here. My problem is I have tried many root methods and have yet to get root or close to it.
Thunderbolt
My firmware is 1.03.0000
radio is 1.15.00.0128w3
any help would be much appreciated!!

If you use the method in jcase's thread, you simply copy+paste commands into the adb window

Sounds like you used the 3 click method. If that's how you want to do it I think you need to start at step 2.
You should do it through adb though since it sounds like you're a rooting rookie. It'll help in the long run.

JCase's method is a sticky in the development section btw.

Use this link to learn about adb to help you out.

Many thanks!
Thank you guys who posted! And a big thanks to those who developed all the materials for the root process.
I had apparently not done something right the first few times !! " CHECK MD5 SUMS!! for those of you who overlooked this every step it is important!! I now have root and as soon as I am set up proper on here I will be donating! Everyone should! These guys work hard to make it easier on the rest of us. Again many thanks!

Rooting a phone gives you and some apps administrative control over the phone..rooting is needed to flash custom recoveries and custom ROMs...check out the sticky in the general vibrant section and it should answer all your questions on how to root...good luck!

On this very page is a thread called the noob friendly guide.

I used Ryan's OCLF app from the market. It was the easiest way to root, plus gives the option to unroot and has a bunch of other great tools!! Stick with putting your questions in the right forums and you should be able to get all the help you will ever need.....

Get oclf from market root.
Then apply a lagfix makes phone faster then enjoy.
After a week of playing try out new roms

Im no pro. But I would say the first thing you should do is go to the development section and read the vibrant bible. You don't want to be on here in a day or two saying omg I bricked my phone what do I do. Just read through the sections and it has the answers.

This is my favorite noob guide so far. Link
Make sure you follow the steps on backing up everything. You can never be too careful. These phones are really hard to brick, but you can easily loose a lot of data if you haven't backed up the phone.
Just go to the bible in the stickys, it has all the info, read everything twice if u have to

Guide-windows 8-ADB/fastboot solved!

This is a guide to help people fix fastboot not being recognized with the new windows 8 consumer preview, which happened to me and i found the easy fix. After installing the preview,
1 connect htc evo 3d, let phone connect and install its own drivers, then under device manager, find htc-update drivers- download and install adb drivers http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?2tunwdxr3q2q8ec
2. Next go into sdk manager and install all updates that are current, make sure you dont let computer go into idle and if files arent downloading correctly, simply redo the update till everything updates properly, might take a few times because windows 8 isnt optimized yet for file transfer, who knows, etc
3. FASTBOOT IS NO LONGER UNDER TOOLS, BECAUSE ITS UNDER PLATFORM TOOLS. the update puts fastboot from tools to platform tools, so to get adb/fastboot to recognize you have to shift/commandprompt where platform tools are for it to recognize adb/fastboot and let you issue commands
There you have it..... maybe i should go into developing, i just got lucky with this, i hope this helps one person out.... rocking the new htc one s rom, htc evo 3d until the next 3d, keep the developing coming
awesome
I've been looking for something like this, thanks so much luthien!
sure, anytime......hope it helps more people

What the Hell. Dude my guides work. This one however is the one that should be removed. This guide is a joke obviously you have no idea what your doing. When you say in your guide to download all the packages are you aware what's that for ??? Its for full on development. You don't need any of that for fastboot or adb. Unless your planning on developing all that will do is occupy space on your hard drive and a lot of it. Also you could have just pointed the user to newer/latest sdk that will put the tools in platform. No need to download the old sdk just to update to the newer one with a whole lot of installs the average user will never need. Your guide should definitely be removed because its highly incorrect.

Yeah seriously, he tried to put up a guide to help people who couldn't get adb and fastboot to work. It obviously worked for him. If this is what happens when people try and help around here, then thats why we don't see more guides.

I don't understand. What does FASTBOOT have to do with Windows 8? Or Windows anything for that matter?

You could have done your research before posting a guide and you would have known this. As far as being helpful your choice to post "not searching for a similar guide that may or may not work" how was that helpful??? Are you not reading your post ??? When xda member "ssojyeti" posted a link to my thread asking you to read before you post you chose to reply with a non helpful comment towards my guide. When you could have posted something helpful or useful. If the more knowledge, guides, etc the better then why not post something postive about my guide?? Instead you chose not to henceforth my reply. Also your guide is incorrect and instead of doing your research to know what it is your posting you half do it, throw it up as a guide and say its to help the community. Why not just take your time read a little and post a guide were you know what it is your posting about that way when you posted your guide the community would have had the benefit of the time, effort, and research you put into it to provide the best guide you could. That would help the community more wouldn't you agree?? You post a guide on how to get fastboot working and the way your guide is telling the user has nothing really to do with fastboot at all. So you sir could have been more helpful by taking your time to do the research, posting postive feed back about fellow xda members guides, and reading before you post.

Nothing aginst your post but what's the point.??? Did ya ever read me post anything saying my guide was the end all be all ?? Read the guide in fact I say the complete opposite. My guide can be done in 20min and done correctly. If that's to long for you or if its to complicated for you by all means don't use it. Also when you say this guide has room for future development I really have no idea what it is your referring to.

frustrated with rooting

I've tried numerous times with numerous methods. Can't seem to get it down. I consider myself pretty tech savvy. Any tips for a noob?
Read the instructions from the developer over and over. Then read it again before doing anything else. Read them several times in their entirety before beginning action. Most issues arise because people think they've read the instructions, but they missed that one key item.
Follow THIS step by step guide, assuming you are bone stock (as the guide states) and you will be golden if you do not skip anything.
I used his CASUAL one-click method (on mac, windows should be easier) and it was my first time rooting. 0 Problems.
Know exactly what version of stock software you have installed on your device. Make sure it lines up with any guide you are following. If you're not sure, ask. Make sure you have a comprehensive understanding of the following concepts before proceeding. If you're confused as to what any of these are, search the forums and google. As a last result, ask. Don't just think you know what these are. Be positive in your knowledge of these terms:
Root
(Locked) Bootloader
Recovery
Rom
Mod
Kernel
Flash/Install
Cache
Dalvik-Cache
Lastly, back up everything, every time. Best laid plans and all that. You can never be too safe.
Good luck
It all depends on whether you're on a Mac or PC. I had tons of problems with my Mac...I finally had to use my wife's work PC. There are also tons of Youtube videos with step by step instructions and links to the software...

Your first noob mistake is posting a question and not giving any details. What version are you on? Baseband? What have you actually tried? There are more than enough people to help guide you in the right direction. But as he said, do read until your eyes hurt. Then go away and when you come back, read some more

If you really a noob in this business, I advise you to first get familiar with basics of Android.
Here is the link, learn about these carefully. It might come in handy in the future. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1930844
Here is another one. It is about pros and cons of rooting your device and in generally what 'truly' is rooting. https://www.technorms.com/5591/pros-cons-rooting-android-phone
There are few ways you can root your device. Surely, each way has its own pros and cons. But as far as I know, there 2 ways you can root your device quickly.
1. Kingoroot
2. Rooting through ADB
Kingoroot, is the easiest of all rooting methods. It is basically a 'one-click' root app. But since there is no thorough checking on what truly is happening under the hood while rooting through this method, I flag it is un-safe. It does the job but personally I believe it is unsafe.
If you need any help, we all are here. But don`t forget to get knowledge from different sources on your own. Trust me, it will help you alot even when something goes wrong. Goodluck :good:
