[Q] JK2 Radio? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I have spent the last few days with obsidian v4.2 beta, and it's a nice rom, but the speed and battery life just isn't there. My reception however was AWESOME. Is it possible to use the radio from JK2 with a stock rom? If so, how would I extract the necessary files and apply them? Or perhaps someone could post a nice update.zip that I could flash through CwM recovery?

All of the JK2 radios should be the same, and I don't believe they will work properly with pre-froyo builds (JFD, JI6) since the modems from those were interchangeable with each other but did not work properly with JK2.
If you want to experiment do a search on redbend_ua and which partition the modem.bin is located in. Be warned, however, that this is dangerous territory; a type can and will brick your phone (I have a hunch this is how eugene bricked his).

That's what I was afraid of. Thank you for the insight.

I think you can flash JI2/JI6 on top.of the Onyx and Obsidian ROMs. In addition, i dont think it is so much about the modem. There are people using jk2 modem with great battery life. Im using the froyocollab ROM and am getting way bettery battery life than obsidian. Others have gotten the same.result with eugenes machat R11.

You can do either one but it introduces a bug that if you drop into edge from 3g it will stay there until you force it back. The way to get around it is to set 3g only in settings.

Interesting, I never noticed this... I'll try replicate it later today...

so which modem is better for battery/signal?
JI2, JI6, or JFD?

JFD is not compatible with 2.2 roms.
JI2 has better battery life.
JI6 has better signal but bad battery life.

Kind of off subject, but I noticed a huge battery increase with eugene's B series stable kernel. Just my 2 cents... Also running j12 on onyx 4.2.

well updating/flashing a newer/custom modem can either help or hurt your vibrant...i forget the stock modem...but take the JK6 modem for example....it gives a little boost in signal strength at the cost of a little battery life.. there are others like the JI2 and JI6....the newest one JL1 is said the be the best one....balancing great signal strength and great battery life.....but it hasnt been comfirmed yet...im using the JK6 modem and it does give me better signal at the expense of faster battery drain.....and of course...READ EVERYTHING AND FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK

[Q] SuperClean radio/kernel combination

I've read that using the eb01 kernel and DL09 radio can improve battery life in SC 2.8. Truth?
myth..
however i wouldnt try any other radio with eb01
Give it a shot. Easy enough to do the switch and you can always go back. The presenter of that configuration is a trustworthy source here on the forums.

dunno about battery life yet .. going to wipe bstats in a few . i can say that it improved my data connection tremendously .
Actually, it's highly probable. Especially if you use gps. It's a commonly known fact DL09 had the best gps lock of any other. Dunno about data connection speeds...
being a noob, I don't want to mess up how my phone is working right now. I used adrynalyne method to flash my phone back after 2.7, to stock. Flashed new CWM, flashed 2.6 then 2.8 voodoo, used eb01 kernal, and enabled lagfix. I also have EB01 midnight/steel blue theme rocking. I would like to get back to dl09, becuase of the GPS performance. Do I need to do anything special before I do that, or just find and flash it via CWM. Voodoo is the part that makes me hesitant, and that fact that I use my phone as my modem, so I mess it up, I can't access this forum to fix it.
Thanks in advance.
Chopper posted a .tar. I'm on voodoo too , just flash via Odin in the PDA section.

As stated above by lucas.scott use odin to flash the tar file using the pda option. And below are links to both so you can undo it if you should feel the need.

good day.
do I have to worry about voodoo? Or is that just the kernal that i worry about? sorry for the noob question.

Haven't seen any difference in battery life . But GPS went from taking 15 minutes to sync on eb01 , to about 2 seconds . So that's well worth it in my book .

Update to sc 2.9.1and you won't have anymore gps issues. I lock almost immediatly.
Any improvement in reception, battery life, data tranmission (i.e. reliability and speed)?
I tested it for a few hours, and noticed that my MMS died. I could not receive MMS messages, it would stick on downloading. Of course after that, I went right back to EB01 modem.
Hmmm I haven't had any mms problems. In fact , I was experiencing data drops on eb01 . Dl09 cured that for me . Crazy how different phones are reacting so differently .

Honestly though, I should test again. The MMS in question were from my girlfriend who is on T-Mobile, and I have often experienced bull**** from her MMS with T-Mobile. So that may be it, I might test further because most people say DL09 is sweet.

the leak was already ported... just as this will be. i wouldn't expect gps, but hopefully we can get an actual recovery...
So when it is official could we just Odin back to stock and upgrade legitimately through kies?

Lol, CM7 is a joke on the Vibrant. CyanogenMod is always a step ahead of the drivers available for Samsung devices, so it will *never* work properly on a Samsung. By the time they have what they need to make it work, they're already pushing out a new "no wifi no gps no nothing useful" version. Nothing against CyanogenMod, but... Try CM7 (or any version) is never much of an answer on the Vibrant and recommending it to anyone is pointless.
That said...
Every time anyone posts a thread asking when, T-Mobile kills a kitten, Baby Jesus cries, and another week will go by before the update.

From the thread on CM7 for the Vibrant:
Known bugs:
You can't get into recovery/download without the 3 buttons combo. (You can't from inside the ROM, so do NOT flash if you can't use the 3 button combo.)
Problems switching between 2G and 3G when data is connected. (You may get un-reliable data.)
Compass. (works not at 100%)
Video playback may be choppy with some formats.
GPS is broken.
May have many other bugs that are unlisted.
Polling problem on RIL (Works after you lock and unlock your phone.)
USB Tethering is currently broken
Battery life has significantly improved with latest unofficial nightly (3/31) and the latest Additional kernel. See below. However, it is still not as good as stock.

Don't know how fast extremely is.. I used to get 12-14 hrs. on Simply honey with moderate usage (25+ calls, text , few hours on the web and very little wi- fi) If you aren't getting that recalibrate as the post said above.
Also, this is a Gingerbread ROM so the battery life isn't going to be as good as Froyo anyway.

If you have Simply Honey on it then you are rooted and free to flash anything. The first thing to do is go onto settings/about phone and see what version you have and then decide if you want to stay with a custom rom or just put it back to stock. There are numerous tutorial threads here and plenty of people willing to help you out.
Good luck.

Calibrate your battery!
- There seems to be a safety feature in Gingerbread or Samsung's version of Gingerbread that causes the battery to start draining when it reaches 100%. That said to calibrate your battery properly you must do it as soon as the battery full pop up appears.
- Download the app found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1024867 and follow the on screen instructions.
>>>>>>>>>>
The app referenced up there is really simple to use and works great.
Here's the SH thread with more instructions if needed - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1021383.

I use the re calibrating app every morning, or when I have to recharge to 100%, and it does not seem to be helping any!!! delete batterystat.bin or somtehing similar its at the top.

It has been said over and over again that on CM7 doing that helps, and it actually does, i never asked why just doing it helps.

[EC09][MODEM][ODIN] EC09 Radio/Modem for Odin

Hey everyone,
This is just the modem (radio) file for ODIN. This way you can download this modem separate from the all-in-one ODIN. At this time, I would recommend this modem, but I would NOT recommend the EC09 ROM as it is buggy.
To extract this file, you will need 7zip. It is one of the best zip/LZMA/tar programs for Windows. http://www.7-zip.org/
Instructions
Download 7zip from the link: http://www.7-zip.org/
Download ODIN if you haven't. http://adrynalyne.us/files/odin/Odin3v1.3.exe
Download the package below, and extract it with 7zip.
Open ODIN, and connect your device with the battery out while holding the volume down key.
Click PDA, and select the .tar.md5 file you extracted.
Click Start, and it should flash to your phone.
Put battery back in, and {optional} via Clockwork Mod flash NAMELESS v4 or whatever custom TW Gingerbread ROM you wish! jt1134's CM7, andmer's MIUI, or your ROM of choice.
MD5
ec09-modem.tar.md5.7z = 5ffd2b3ce243948493de400c61230435

UPDATE: I added a poll on what you think about EC09's modem.
UPDATE 2: It is recommended to use this modem when running jt1134's CM7 (and I assume andmer's MIUI). Certain things will either not work or not be stable if you use ED-series modems on CM7 mtd due to jt using parts of EC09.
Happy Flashing,

You can try it. Radios are independent from ROMs and kernels. I haven't tested it, but I don't know if there is a reason to have this radio over say ED04 for MIUI.
Andmer is on ED04, so I would say stick with ED01, ED03, or ED04 radios.
Use this with CM7 mtd and MIUI.

i don't know if radio version effects GPS but changing from DL09 to the EC09 radio gave me a more accurate position. Went from around 100m error inside my house to a 30m error. I did notice that i cannot maintain a fix on all the satellites, constantly dropping one or two and reconnecting. I don't have this fascinate on the network so i cannot give any feedback about data speeds
sorry if you find this nooby
but why do we need 7zip , this file extracted fine with winrar itself ?
This radio has made a huge difference in battery life when in a marginal signal area. I mean HUGE. I went from killing a battery in 8 hours to it lasting over 24 hours. This radio is magic.

This modem is oddly awesome. I get better data speeds and signal strength. NO missed calls or anything. AND Google Sky Maps runs 20x faster (NO **** TRY IT). Also I was running TOP from adb shell and the accelerometer seems to actually take less cpu.
Updated to EC09 from ED04 on ComRom 2.1, and don't have any complaints so far. I often get an extra bar of signal, and while my download speed is about the same, I seem to have picked up a healthy 150-200kbps in upload. The real test will be tomorrow at work where I get almost no signal...
EDIT: Yup, love this radio. Getting 1 solid bar with 3G working at work, whereas before I would get absolutely no data connectivity and a soild 90% time without signal
um for some reason i cant flash this.... it alwaise fails... tried like 30 times now literally 30 fcken times
