Hi guys I was just wondering, what is a modem and what they are used for, if you go to the vibrant development section and scroll down you will see Master talking about flashing it and idk what he's talking about.
Thanks

well updating/flashing a newer/custom modem can either help or hurt your vibrant...i forget the stock modem...but take the JK6 modem for example....it gives a little boost in signal strength at the cost of a little battery life.. there are others like the JI2 and JI6....the newest one JL1 is said the be the best one....balancing great signal strength and great battery life.....but it hasnt been comfirmed yet...im using the JK6 modem and it does give me better signal at the expense of faster battery drain.....and of course...READ EVERYTHING AND FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK

Thanks

Vibrant root and overclock help

I'm new too the whole rooting deal, but I know I want to. I already downloaded the one touch program or whatever it is. I was really just wandering about overclocking my cpu.
I've read that I will need to install a new kernel but I don't know which one. I just don't want it to change the look or operation of my phone. I like the touchwiz and everything,i just want to speed it up. Does any one know what I should do?
Also if I root will I be able to do the 2.2 update when it comes out?
Thanks for any help I can get.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
As a newb myself let me try and help. First off take some time and do alot of research on rooting, flashing roms and kernals. Read, read and read. There is alot of info here. It is possible to mess your phone up if you dont know what your doing. Now thay being said...... Using ryanza root plus lag fix is probably the easiest way to root. If your hard ware locked, well thats another story. And if you want to overclock you will need a custom kernal, remember what I said about reading. Now depending on the kernal you may or may not be able to get the 2.2 when it rolls out. Just take some time and educate yourself, and for goodness sake please make nandroid before you do anything drastic.

Like greggory said, you should check to see if you are hardware locked (cannot access download and recovery modes).
To check:
1 turn off your phone
2 Hold volume + and - and power buttons
3 Keep holding until you see the vibrant screen pop up a second time. Now release ONLY the power button, still holding volume + and -.
4 Keep holding volume buttons until you get to the recovery screen. Then release.
If your phone continues to boot normally, you are hardware locked.
If you are locked, go to the Bible thread and scroll until you see the hardware locked fix. Follow the directions there.
The Bible thread should have everything you need to know about modding your phone.

Thanks alot, I will check out the bible.
And good news for me, my phone is not hardware locked.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Thats good its not locked. The bible is a great tool for info. I also read some of the post by bionix , involving custom roms. Check out there website. teamwhiskey.com. Just be sure you make a backup thru rom manager in case you mess something up. This is a awesome forum with alot of knowledgable people. Unfortunately Im not one of them....
Strange.. are only a select unfortunate few vibrants hardware locked?

It looks like JAC's OC/UV kernel would be the best for overclocking. Does that sound like a good assumption?
Would that change the way phone looks or functions, in terms of regular use like touch wiz?

I like the JAC kernel and no, it won't change anything about the way your phone looks. It'll just run faster
Great. Would you suggest the regular kernel or the voodoo one?
And thanks again for all the help.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I'm still learning too, although I know I'll never really dip into programming. I use Bionix 1.9 with Jac's kernal. I did have a problem with Pandora and the media player shutting off, but after adjusting the min mhz to 400, it hasn't frozen yet. I love this stuff. I just wish I could get an asnwer on how to flash some of the mods in the other forum like the clear notification bar. I posted in Q&A and never got a response. Too bad. I can't contribute, but I would still like to learn.....
So you haven't had any of the lag problems?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Ok, I guess I'm going with bionix 1.9 with JAC OC/UV voodoo. That sounds like a good tried and tested way to go.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
What is the difference between bionix 1.9 w/Jac's OC/UV kernel 1.1 and bionix 1.9 w/Jac's OC/UV/Voodoo kernel 1.1?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
The voodoo kernel has the voodoo lag fix already in it. If im not mistaken.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Alright. Now I think I'm going to use bionix fusion 1.1. Do I need to flash that before or after JAC's voodoo kernel?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
so the stock kernel isn't that good?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
From what I've read the voodoo kernel just has the added lag fix to speed up your phone more.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
So is there any order to needing to flash bionix fusion and JACs OC/UV Voodoo?

[Q] JK2 Radio?

So, I have spent the last few days with obsidian v4.2 beta, and it's a nice rom, but the speed and battery life just isn't there. My reception however was AWESOME. Is it possible to use the radio from JK2 with a stock rom? If so, how would I extract the necessary files and apply them? Or perhaps someone could post a nice update.zip that I could flash through CwM recovery?
All of the JK2 radios should be the same, and I don't believe they will work properly with pre-froyo builds (JFD, JI6) since the modems from those were interchangeable with each other but did not work properly with JK2.
If you want to experiment do a search on redbend_ua and which partition the modem.bin is located in. Be warned, however, that this is dangerous territory; a type can and will brick your phone (I have a hunch this is how eugene bricked his).
That's what I was afraid of. Thank you for the insight.
I think you can flash JI2/JI6 on top.of the Onyx and Obsidian ROMs. In addition, i dont think it is so much about the modem. There are people using jk2 modem with great battery life. Im using the froyocollab ROM and am getting way bettery battery life than obsidian. Others have gotten the same.result with eugenes machat R11.

You can do either one but it introduces a bug that if you drop into edge from 3g it will stay there until you force it back. The way to get around it is to set 3g only in settings.

so which modem is better for battery/signal?
JI2, JI6, or JFD?
JFD is not compatible with 2.2 roms.
JI2 has better battery life.
JI6 has better signal but bad battery life.

Kind of off subject, but I noticed a huge battery increase with eugene's B series stable kernel. Just my 2 cents... Also running j12 on onyx 4.2.

[Q] SuperClean radio/kernel combination

I've read that using the eb01 kernel and DL09 radio can improve battery life in SC 2.8. Truth?
myth..

Give it a shot. Easy enough to do the switch and you can always go back. The presenter of that configuration is a trustworthy source here on the forums.

dunno about battery life yet .. going to wipe bstats in a few . i can say that it improved my data connection tremendously .
Actually, it's highly probable. Especially if you use gps. It's a commonly known fact DL09 had the best gps lock of any other. Dunno about data connection speeds...
being a noob, I don't want to mess up how my phone is working right now. I used adrynalyne method to flash my phone back after 2.7, to stock. Flashed new CWM, flashed 2.6 then 2.8 voodoo, used eb01 kernal, and enabled lagfix. I also have EB01 midnight/steel blue theme rocking. I would like to get back to dl09, becuase of the GPS performance. Do I need to do anything special before I do that, or just find and flash it via CWM. Voodoo is the part that makes me hesitant, and that fact that I use my phone as my modem, so I mess it up, I can't access this forum to fix it.
Thanks in advance.
Chopper posted a .tar. I'm on voodoo too , just flash via Odin in the PDA section.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
As stated above by lucas.scott use odin to flash the tar file using the pda option. And below are links to both so you can undo it if you should feel the need.

do I have to worry about voodoo? Or is that just the kernal that i worry about? sorry for the noob question.

Dl09 is better for gps in my case
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
Haven't seen any difference in battery life . But GPS went from taking 15 minutes to sync on eb01 , to about 2 seconds . So that's well worth it in my book .
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Update to sc 2.9.1and you won't have anymore gps issues. I lock almost immediatly.
Any improvement in reception, battery life, data tranmission (i.e. reliability and speed)?
I tested it for a few hours, and noticed that my MMS died. I could not receive MMS messages, it would stick on downloading. Of course after that, I went right back to EB01 modem.
Hmmm I haven't had any mms problems. In fact , I was experiencing data drops on eb01 . Dl09 cured that for me . Crazy how different phones are reacting so differently .

Honestly though, I should test again. The MMS in question were from my girlfriend who is on T-Mobile, and I have often experienced bull**** from her MMS with T-Mobile. So that may be it, I might test further because most people say DL09 is sweet.
Tell me about it dude , my girl is on at&t and about 60% of our texts never reach each other . Switching her to vzw this month.

what rom should i use?

i need a new rom. asop 1.1 is starting to get a little bit old for me. i would like 2.2.1, i NEED wifi calling, and NO voodo but the ability to use oclf lag fix. any suggestions? thanks in advance
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
If you NEED wifi calling then 2.2.1 is out of the question.
Also I would highly suggest you to use voodoo instead of OCLF. It is much more stable and even though it scores lower on quadrant it is indeed faster. Don't be scared of it .
So here are a list of suggestions
Axura
Bionix
Trigger
yea bro oclf sucks big time.. i recommend you to use trigger 2.8! ive been using trigger for a while now, and its the best rom out there in my opinion! dont be scared to use voodoo youll grow to love it =D
okay so if i stick with 2.2 are there any options for wifi calling? i looked at your suggestions and i like them but it doesnt seem they have wifi calling availiable. if they do are they built in or do i need to flash them seperately? if i need to flash it seperately how do i go around doing that?

With Trigger, I have an app called Bloater. Open it up and at the bottom you will be able to just press "Install" on Wifi Calling and done.
With Bionix I think you have to flash the wifi calling separately. You do that just like you flash a ROM except you choose the wifi calling zip instead.
alright cool thanks for the help, il think il go with trigger! does the bloater app come preinstalled?

Ironically birgertime develops trigger...great rom though kept me from my old habits of flashing multiple roms a week....go with trigger. All of the roms run great trust me but I'm pretty sure most will be happy with trigger....great theme, stable, and fast!

Im running darkys extreme v9.3 with dead horse kernel on my vibrant and i must say is clean stable reallt fast no issues what so ever.
I to came from darkys rom with the dead horse kernel lol but I hated the call recording thing so I switched to trigger

I've heard about trigger but haven't looked into it much. If i decided to switch over what all do i need to dowmload
All you need to do is flash it like normal ... I use the tiger blood kernel and it runs perfectly!

[Q] Does flashing back to stock affect T-mobile modem?

I've flashed a T-mobile modem and using with the HSPA+ for awhile, however the Saurom ROM I'm using has some bugs like I can't reboot my phone properly and I sometimes lost signals, so my question is: if I want to flash my Note back to stock android, am I gonna lose the capability of using the HSPA+ which I'm using right now? Is there any ROM you would recommend that would be stable for the Note and still have the T-mobile modem enabled? Please give me an answer because I've been confused with this for awhile. God bless you all...
Question
Anybody? Please?
I'm using Saurom 7.1 and ICS theme on,Blaze modem and its been running great. It isn't as fast speedwise compared to my Amaze 4g but stable and fast.

You will probably have to reflash the tmo modem. But it might still be there as others have had non-stock modems that were still there even after flashing a stock tar file.

Best way to be sure would be to flash the stock radio. Though, it would be nice to know if using Odin will put EVERYTHING back to stock.
I'll bet the answer exists on the forum already but it's a good question, regardless.

Oops. Read the question wrong. So far as i know, once you flash a radio, it's there forever. Unless you flash a new one. Depending on how someone makes their ROM, this could change, but I'm betting that most of the devs aren't worried about forcibly making the people flashing their **** switch modems.

thanks for sharing. I've heard some infos about flashing back to stock could affect the radio, but I feel relieved when I saw this.
Dont worry about the modem in GB just flash it and it'll work
all ive heard is that the "ICS leak" doesnt play well with TMO modem
but idk to be honest
