H = 3G+ (what they call in the states as "4G" but it is not)
3G = 3G

Hi im a noob and im running the vibrant on the bionix-v rom and I cant seem to get the 3G icon instead of the H
How can I change that?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
H is 3G it represents 3g and 3.5g the rom probably had this embedded when making it. to change you would need to push it in adb
Well I know that H is 3G but I want,it to say 3G and it changes but only when im on maps
Any ideas why?

Yes, H+ is what AT&T is currently calling 4G.

so what is this really? H+ is HSPA+? and H is HSDPA?
From what i have researched, and i could be wrong there's not alot of info on this so i appologize in advance, the symbol for 4g is also an "H". I heard they have a vibrant 4g, ffc, 4g, etc., and i definitely do not have it. BUT my Samsung vibrant sometimes gets an "H" symbol when I'm in some areas. Concord NH doesn't get 4g but when im in a tmobile store i randomly get the h symbol and when I'm in Nashua i only get an h symbol. i pay 50 a month for unlimited data and 100 mgps at "4g" speeds. I just want to know if the T-Mobile Samsung galaxy s vibrant on firmware 2.1 stock, mine is on 2.3.7 cm7, gets or is able to get 4g on updated firmware. Thanks in advance for any help.

T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant does NOT have 4G hardware.
You are seeing an H because you are running a custom rom. On CM-7 and MiUi it displays an H, indicating something like 3.5G.
Oh ok thank you for the quick reply also one more question am i supposed to get 3g with T-Mobile unlimited data because i get a text saying 2g after 100mb limit is used and also on the my account app it says 2g. But in Nashua it says 3g on stock firmware, but the speeds are around 0.12mbps (internet speed app). I kind of want to know before i go to T-Mobile and waste time

I think that you are only going to get full "fast" speeds for the first 100 mb. After that it will still show 3G in the task bar but your speed will be throttled down to 2G speeds.
Alright thanks for the info mods can trash this if they want now

I assure you you're not getting 4G speeds. Your device does not have the hardware needed to receive these speeds. 4G and 3G is NOT software... so, not being 4G, you're definitely not getting it. It's just the ROM you're running. Despite icons, your phone is running as usual.

agreed. its all hardware, not software. on the vibrant, we are limited to a modem of HSPA+ 7. 4G is marketed as having a modem of HSPA+ 14 or higher.
For those of you who are running Team Whiskey's Bionix V 1.3.1 rom, Is there a difference between 'H' and '3G' on the top bar? Does 'H' really mean we are getting 4g like speeds or is it just cosmetic? And what does 3g mean if 'H' is just cosmetic? I have been running this rom for the longest time and im as confused, about it, as the first day I flashed it.
H just means you are using the hspa network for 3g, instead of the old 3g towers

So the speeds would be the same in that case?
H is for data transfer.
G/3G is for voice calls.
Bionix or not, these are standard across all non-4g phones/networks.
You'll never see an H when talking to someone and you'll never see a G/3G when browsing.

Im pretty sure that's not right. I've seen both g and 3g while browsing before

Ya but once those up and down arrows light up it should flip to H bc of the data transfer.
No, I've been in areas where i just get 3g and i just get g, just like areas where i just get h or just get e

This is an old article but where it says
The phones are designed to automatically connect to the best available network (3G or GSM/GPRS/EDGE) to provide the great call quality and rich communication services customers expect from T-Mobile.

tells me that the phones use whatever it's connected to for both voice and data. So adding in H for HSPA, then 3g would = UMTS, and obviously E = edge and G = Gprs. Or that's my understanding anyway.

This is correct.
HSPA is basically the 4g network used for data usage "H"
3g is a bit slower than H and is sometimes used for networking
2g or G is even slower than 3g or H, I think it was the first "G"
Then E or edge is usually used when you are out of cities and in the country. It's relatively slow too.
H is the fastest.
So to summarize
H > 3g > E > G

I am not sure I have an issue or not in all honesty. I have flashed to the new baseband on my lg optimus t. I am using hephappys ics 9.1.4 but I never get a 3g icon. My connect speeds on mobile network show a h symbol and are about 2Meg down by 126 k upload. I am not really sure what I should see for a 3g connection.

Google and read more about 3G and H.
H stands for HSDPA.. means 3.5G basically faster than 3G.
Good to know. My stock rom must have just shown 3g instead.
I am surprised that updating the baseband has improved the signal as much as it did. I went from 2bars to 4 bars.
It's also nice to not have to flash a rom then flash the baseband fix.
