Running a Vibrant that is rooted, nothing else. Running wifi tether app from code.google site does not yield ability to share internet connection. App runs, SU is granted, but no network shows up on laptop.
Is there a different kernel that needs to be flashed to get the tethering active, if so please guide me to it.
As always, XDA rocks... Thanks in advance.
No kernel needed ... make sure you have the right version too. try this one:

Try mobile ap instead.. if not try multiple versions of the app...

flash mobile ap. download the correct file that corresponds to your phones firmware. mobile AP creates a hotspot in infrastructure which basically means its a real wifi spot compared to the wireless tether app which is ad-hoc only. ad-hoc is like bridging and sharing the connection..not everything can detect ad-hoc
Thread moved to Q&A.
Try barnacle from the market. There was an issue on Vibrant and mtu but the dev fixed it

I got wifi tether to work by installing JAC's kernel and then getting the latest build of wifi tether.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
I hope that helps some what.
I'm running wireless tether 2.0.5 pre7 on a completely stock Vibrant with root and it works perfectly. I have yet to find a working version of USB or wired tether. Just use the link that was provided by the poster above or Google "Wireless tether for root users". If you find a working USB tether, please post: -)

Wireless tether 2.0.5 will run just fine on your Vibrant with the stock kernel a stock Vibrant long as its rooted. Just fyi.
All of those mentioned methods use ad-hoc and not infrastructure mode as requested by the op. I don't know of any tethering apps that will setup an infrastructure hotspot now, but I believe that the built in tethering in froyo is infrastructure, but not sure. (I'm sure tmobile will have that stripped out anyway, but maybe if cm6 ever gets to this device it will be possible)
FYI, I'm using Wireless Tether For Root Users without any modifications except rooting, using version 2.0.5-pre7 and it's working great. Way faster than barnacle.

PdaNet and EasyTether both work over USB. Unfortunately, both apps filter https unless you get the paid version. PdaNet does have a fully functional 2 week trial, though.
Sorry, I have nothing for the OP...
I thought so. I guess we will have to wait for either the dev that's over android wifi tether to implement it, cm 6.0, or for froyo.
And oh yes, froyos hotspot is infrastructure, and that is the main thing I miss about my nexus.

Get linux on your pc lol. Usb works fine on linux with no extra software. (Ubuntu) just turn on debug mode on your phone and plug in.

What about samsung Kies? that works as a usb modem for me. The link is floating around the vibrant forum somewhere.
I have yet to get witless tethering working using any if the software update all the way up to pre 8. Barnacle, on the other hand works just fine for me, and has a humorous icon too!

Lookup [MOD] MobileAP in Vibrant Android Development to enable infrastructure.
I second checking out the MobileAp mod. I can't post the url due to being new. This is working perfect for me. Much much faster then every other tethering I tried. The applications I was trying to access before that I could not get to work are working flawless now with the exception of my VPN Client.

I just rooted and couldnt get Barnacle or the other Wifi tether app to work. After some googling I saw that there's an issue with the Vibrant and tethering. Any known working wifi tether apps working? If not, what can I do? Install a custom ROM?
Mobile AP works just fine for me
Im using the standard ROM and don't see the mobile AP option. In the market I just see a mobile AP shortcut that doesnt do anything but warn me it doesnt work on my phone.
By "standard rom" I take it you mean TouchMyWiz, but what version are you running?
I'm pretty sure this will work for you no matter which 2.1 rom you are using.
Mobile AP App Fixed to Work on Samsung Vibrant
i've been running barnacle tether for the past week to run my ipod with little to no issues as long as i have a decent 3g signal on my phone.
I was having this issue with Wireless Tether for Root Users whenever I tried downloading form the market or any repository.
I ended up downloading the apk for the Facinate from the android-wifi-tether google code page and after a couple tries it worked fine for me on Obsidian V4.2.
Hi there,
I've an unlocked att atrix 4g which I use in India. I'm trying to enable the Mobile hotspot app in order to get Internet on my macbook.
When I try to enable the Mobile Hotspot button in this app, I get "account not setup for Mobile Hotspot", and in the notification bar I get "to enable go to att.com/wireless..." When I go to that site they ask me for my Mobile no. and password, which I don't have, because I'm not using the phone in the States.
Any suggestions how to get it enabled?
Thanks.
You can try the barnacle wifi tether app. Google it. Or Pdanet. Or the hotspot enabler in cm7.

Simple solution is to just flash a ROM with the entitlement check disabled. Such as any of the newer gingerbread-based ROMS. Or just disable the entitlement check yourself. Get SQLite or another program, it only takes a second or two and following some simple directions. I had to do it once and it was a snap. Good luck, and happy flashing.

Bhayankar-if the phone is unlocked then you can find barnacle online and install it. thats what im currently using.
You could also use the airplane mode + wifi, go I to the market and download barnacle
I'm attempting to teather to my galaxy prevail, and have had no luck so far. It's possible the chipset does not support it, but it's more possible my phone is failing some how. So I thought I would take a poll.

Have you tried using Open Garden WiFi? Using that to tether to my DInc. I tried using Wireless Android Tether but it would not connect (created ad-hoc). Switched to Open Garden and it created an infrastructure AP and now connects. Though sometimes I have to connect twice before it fully connects.
It tossed an error, but a productive looking one, ill see what I can do with it at home. On ze bus at the moment.

Try WiFi Tether with Setup-method "Softap for Samsung(Master)" from your phone. It works for me (I have Samsung Droid Charge from Verizon). Connected a few android devices to it. You may need to reboot the phone after changing that settings.
My phone is a Dinc running SkyRaider 4.3. The wireless tether that Ihtfp69 baked into the rom works fine for connecting to the NT. I don't remember which one it is though.

DroidX running GB and Wireless Tether 2.0.7 and my NT connects no problem. Not running encryption.
At this time I do not believe there are any available methods on tethering NT to any ad-hoc networks. I've tried multiple methods including all combinations of following:
* replacing wpa_supplicant w/ wpa_supplicant.adhocfix
* modifying wpa_supplicant.conf to reflect ap_scan=2 and added adhoc network section
* modifying tiwlan0.ini to enable wifiadhoc and added desired SSID and BSSType
The closest I came to connecting to any ad-hoc network is while running wpa_supplicant.adhocfix the (*) SSID actually showed up on the available network list and I can click on it to connect (and enter WEP key). However, NT seems to go into an infinite loop while trying to get DHCP and the yellow triangle showed up in the status bar indicating DHCP error.
Ideas anyone? The binary for wpa_supplicant.adhocfix seems to be valid however it is unable to access the system network settings to set IP's. I've also tried to chmod 4755 on the binary but that did not help as well.
Can someone please help on this issue. Thank you!!!
I was thinking of using the patch and applying it to the nt source. I am trying to figure out how to compile it from the bn site.

My galaxy (tmobile vibrant) has a wireless access point option under its wireless setting. I can tether with my nook no problem
Is cm7 out for any other omap 4 phone? I am a noob regarding linux builds but will continue to try to build it.
Sent from my BNTV250 using Tapatalk
I tried this with 9 different version of wpa_supplicant which have been patched for ad-hoc. It seems that no one has fixed this for wpa_supplicant v0.6.10 with tiwlan0 and gingerbread. When looking at the output from adb logcat I could see various errors about tiwlan0 not working and other issues where the ssid was lost during the handshake.
But there is good news on this. I was able to find a working binary wpa_supplicant that does not connect to ad hoc but does work for wireless normally on the NT. It is the reference gingerbread build for the pandaboard (the reference board for omap4). The source is available and I am working on recompiling it with the patch for ad-hoc. For all of the other patches and roms out there I haven't been able to get this far so this looks promising.
Can anyone help me or point me to the right direction... for tethering thanks in advance.

Please state what ROM your are on.

If your phone doesn't already include the option to tether in your settings, download the app from the link above. Once downloaded you're pretty much good to go from there... Sorry for not elaborating more, but I'm typing this on my phone... When I get to a PC in the morning I'll type up something more formal/informal.
Quick question for reference, what rom are you using?
My vibrant has a euphoria.. I thought T-Mobile block tethering...

They blocked tethering through user agent sniffing . Chrome seems to be the only user agent being blocked at the moment . If you use internet explore it will work or you could use "user agent switcher" extension for chrome .

Really? Because I just typed up this post on my PC in Google Chrome (without the "user agent switcher" extension) and I am currently tethered to my Vibrant. I've also tested Internet Explorer, which also works while tethered to my Vibrant... I'm using the app I mentioned above, although the built in wireless tether feature also works for me. Then again, I am using a custom rom, so that could explain why it works for me. Anywho... landrian18, you want to know how to get tether on your device? OK, I'll show you how to do it both on an ICS rom and with the "WiFi Tether for Root Users" app.
On an ICS rom:
Note- I'm not positive this is the same method you would use on euphoria as I'm on a different ICS rom, however, you can still try and see. It should be the same.
1. Go into your phones system settings, this can be accomplished by either locating the settings icon in your app drawer/home screen or by clicking the leftmost physical touch button on your phone.
2. Under WIRELESS & NETWORKS click More....
3. Click Tethering & portable hotspot.
4. Click on Portable Wi-Fi hotspot.
Note 2- Your phone is now acting like a Wi-Fi hotspot and is accessible/detectable by almost all wireless devices except other Android smart phones. If you would like to encrypt your Wi-Fi hotspot click Configure Wi-Fi hotspot and change the password. You can also rename the Wi-Fi hotspot by changing the SSID from AndroidAP (or whatever the default is) to whatever you'd like.
On the app:
Note- These steps are written under the assumption that you have already installed the "WiFi Tether for Root Users" application.
1. Locate and launch the WiFi Tether for Root Users application.
2. Done. That's all you got to do.
Note 2- If you want to customize the SSID, password (remove password), encryption type, etc. Simply go into the apps settings.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE, FEEL FREE TO ASK.
I'm on a custom ROM I've been tethering forever but now I get redirected to TMobiles tethering advertisement page . Others have recently complained about this on XDA . It only works of I use user agent switcher .

That's rather intriguing. Especially since the thread you linked me to originated in 2010. I've never had this issue, although I do use Google Chrome. Hmmm... Very interesting indeed. So you get a window from T-Mobile if you tether using Google Chrome and without the switcher extension?

I have ics and I use the interface no app needed. Though when I used the together for root I get errors . Strange because when I had gingerbread I used the root tether app with no problems

does the phone charge, tether and receive incoming calls while pluged in usb, during wifi or usb tethering? (I used to tether an evdo device and an incoming call would drop the internet)
2.
supposedly easytether will screw with any future attempts to flash your phone and best avoided, whats the best fully featured free alternative to pdanet for a rooted vibrant to usb tether? + can you confirm wifi tether for root works on device?
3.
If I use firefox on my laptop and get redirected to a tmobile subscription page all I have to do is install this addon on my laptop. even if I get re-directed before installing the addon, installing the addon will solve the issue?
thanks, I did a couple searches and didn't find answers.

Just a quick question, are you sure you have the vibrant, and not the galaxy s 4g? There is no stock gingerbread on the vibrant...
Side note, I've used easy tether (great alternative to pda net) along with firefox for a few years and have never seen the t mobile warning. Used it on stock and rooted g1 and vibrant with never any issues.
Does an incoming call drop your usb internet connection and does it charge while connected?
Unless I'm wrong the sgh-t959v is a vibrant as observed from the label. I updated via kies to gingerbread rom from mfg that why I called it stock, not a custom rom.
T959v isn't the same as our t959 Vibrants.
Ours didn't have a GB update via Kies. Be careful even using Kies.
-I'm not sure there is much in our Vibrant thread that applies to t959v at all. Is the t959v the Samsung Blaze 4g? I must research this when I have time.
note: don't modify your phone with anything you see here at all until someone with more knowledge chimes in. I think its a bad idea.
T959v is the galaxy s 4g! T959 is the vibrant. The vibrant never got the gingerbread update, galaxy s 4g did.
Easy tether does charge while in use, phone calls I don't know, never tried.
