After seeing a few new threads start up recently, it was interesting to see how different users have explored the boundaries of TG01 and got the maximum out of it!
I was surprised at certain things this mighty beast can do! I am opening this thread with a hope that we will get more input from TG01 users in terms of what can be done using TG01! May be other users like me will benefit now and in future by knowing that there is no limit to surprises TG01 brings
So question is simple with simplers answers:
What do you use your TG01 MOSTLY for? Please vote for the options and if I have missed out something as 'the most common' act on TG01, then feel free to add comments!
Please can I also request anyone who does something different with their TG01, to post links so that other users could try it and share their views too?
PS: Keep this thread fun but full of information!
Please ADD this to your signature and brag how cool your phone is!!
TELL THE WORLD WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR TG01 please VOTE!

Reading, of course!
One of the thing that every day I do with my TG1 is...reading. I've already read a lot of e-books anywhere..if I'm waiting, on a cue...my book is ready to keep on reading from the last paragraph that I read the previous time.
I had installed an app called µBook, but few days ago I discovered Freda, an free EPUB (and other formats) reader that suits perfectly in our TG01
You can download the last version from http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-freda.html

I love e-books myself, but I couldn't read them on TG01 as I always thought you end up buying and spending lots (I tried B&N) - I am downloading the one you suggesting, it might make me the most happiest and complete TG01 owner ever!
If you know any more TG01 owners, please ask them to come forward and share more so that we get more out of this beast
Thanks

I was a bit unsure if mods would like it !
Mate, if you know more TG01 users on the forum, please ask them to vote and share so that we get more out of TG01 from everyone's experience. This might even reveal what sort of tasks are best performed on TG01
It's really good to see from the votes so far that, Browsing on TG01 is what is done mostly!
Considering the complaints of battery drain and crappy IE that comes with TG01, I am sure most of us have ended up using faster browsers and better batteries!
Anything worth sharing to have better browsing experience on TG01 guys?
I do something more than this! (please post a comment and share)
Yes it help me to progress with ROM dev and in english ... of course !!!

Thanks a lot
It is getting more useful and informative as we get more votes!
Already we know that it works as a great device to browse! So many people use it for browsing..
and many votes for 'I use it for something else' too, but only 2 users mentioned some useful info for us. I wish we will have more ideas for tg01
Most of us still use it for browsing - inspite of claims of bad battery life!
I think it's because of amazing speeds we get with Snapdragon?!
I presume we use Opera/SkyFire/IE - any other browsers you think can work better on TG01?
Hello Everyone!
I am writing this post in most of my threads so that everyone is well informed. I am not sure if you will get annoyed to see the identical post in more than 1 thread. The only reason being, I want everyone who visits particular thread to know that I am going to be a rare visitor on TG01 forums from now.
As you might all know, I went on 3 weeks holiday (it was AWESOME!) only to find out that Orange had sent me a letter confirming that I should F***O** and they won’t be interested in either paying repair costs/ offering replacement handset/ offer any sort of money back for the malfunctioning TG01(s) (6 replacements to be precise) they have supplied me since January 2011! Since last 5 months, I wasn’t able to develop or help with roms/themes as I din’t trust my phone’s behaviour (it froze randomly making hard to know if it’s rom/theme doing it or actual phone). However, I have tried my best to help out in forum and also with beta tests.
My TG01 is now officially in coma. It doesn’t last more than 5 minutes without restarting. This has annoyed the piss out of me and I was helpless financially. However, I have managed to sell this TG01 for spare along with few old WinMos and Symbian phone to get me enough money to buy a brand new San Francisco (the cheapest option out there for smart phone at the moment!)
So, to keep the story short, all these threads, might not see any help at all from me in terms of development. I will still be willing to help anyone and everyone (whatever can be done without a TG01). If anyone would want to use any of my work so far – please feel free to PM me and I will happily share ROMs/THEMES/files etc that will help you to carry on the projects further.
It’s been absolute charm being a part of this forum and will miss it! I will be around in San Francisco forums anyway, so drop me a PM if you ever think of me
Long live TG01 and WinMos
(already saving up to buy new WP7!)
EVC4 Development System
I use the TG01 as a software development platform for a GPS application - see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117192
I'm still using EVC4 as it's simple, effective and free. More modern tools are too complicated for my simple mind, and seem to produce enormous slow applications.
I had to produce my own SDK using Platform Builder, but now find this works on most ARM devices; although it grizzles a bit, it gives full source-level debugging. It does mean I have to use XP for development - has anyone got EVC4 to run under Vista or Win7?
I like the TG01 as it's fast and has a big screen. I think it's virtually unusable as a mobile phone.

hi,
does anyone has "caller2picture" ?
I have the trial version and I want to buy the full one, but on "pocket gear" I've seen a post of a user that bought the full version but he's still unable to assign more then 3 pictures.

Oh, please, give me a break... We're doing our best to create a fun experience for everyone. And besides, what hidden about the policy of removing warez trading?

This is not acceptable at all.... Xchange man those ppl are receiving us as their guests and why pay them back by insulting them??? 2 days ago this site or this forum has reached its 500 user and all of them are considering themselves as one family sharing and learning and teaching. Please reconsider your attitude as we all are here friends and one happy XDA, o2, QTEK, SX56 (forgot any?) Family...
Thanks for the ppl behind this site thanks for the members in this great forum God bless us all.

I have to agree with XDA developer Peter Poelman
come on xcahnge - $14 is not a lot for software... that is damned useful...
and entertaining, and intuitive. Instead of moaning why not just develop your own version of the software and distribute it as freeware?
I mean if it cost several hundred pounds and you used it three times you'd have cause to grumble.
Dont forget that programmers have mouths to feed - and being a software developer is as worthy a job as a train driver or electrician.
(Apart from Solicitors & Estate Agents)
I am none of these by the way, but I know plenty of programmers!
Dont forget that we need people like this to develop apps for our phones to make them "far more functional" than our friends nokias, or motorolas are.
Hold on a minute you dont like paying 14 dollars, but you have several hundred dollars worth of mobile phone!!!!
Just try it out. add three pics for your best friends and if you like it then just BUY NOW!

xda site
hi all
this is a great site and i normally log in daily i used to have a nokia communicator but the xda is a lot more usefull and the only real website for the xda is my-symbian.com and that started a bit like this site but turned very quickly into a forum for selling software and not really intrested in the people or the product it would be s ahame for this to happen here there is loads of free software out there try downloading bear share and you will get loads of games. anyway keep up the good work on the website.
regards kevin beecher
So... what about sharing the serial!!!!
caller2picture is pants..
I only wanted to be able to select different ringtones... caller2picture adds its bloatware crap and removes another useful feature <sending an sms from the contacts> (or has nobody noticed?)
nobody has made a program with a little box that lets you do the same thing?
hmmmm

It is useless, because it is generated depending on number on your Register screen. And that one is probably calculated from your name/or other unique parameters of you xda.
Hi!
Anyone got similar problem. The pictures aren't showing themselves regularly and consistently. They pop up many times less than they don't. Suggest anything, guys? :?
What is frustrating is I bought the full version, but it will not work with WM2003PE.

The program does work with my ppc2003. Anyway, you have to remove your sd card before the installation since the system will automatically install the software to sd card even you choose to install on the default location. The Picture2Caller does have some bugs when installed to ppc 2003. That is the software fails to work with all contacts. Anyway, if you feel ok with this, go ahead. Cheers
I want to agree with Arzeb,
This is an AWESOME site, complete with smart helpful people. Please keep up the excellent stuff that gets done here.
xchange: please chill.
THANX to the rest of you.
Hal.
Tried installing it again withot the SD card, still does not work. What happens is, it does not retrieve the contact's name, and phone numbers.
I read in this month's issue of Stuff magazine that a new version of the XDA will be released later this year.
Browsing on internet I found only one link that showed a picture of a xda with a blue back panel and could as well be the original model.
Has anyone heard about this and maybe know where to find more info on this (if O2 will support them for instance) and some specs and maybe photo's?
Thanx
There will be a new version of the XDA but it's not certain yet which company/ies will be releasing it. I heard some rumours about bluetooth, more memory and a faster processor, I haven't heard anything on SDIO support yet.
Bluetooth would be great, WiFi would be fantastic. Maybe even GPS and a 56K color screen (for the freaks among us to watch movies)?
Anyone know the mail adress/website of HTC who makes them? Have some requests of my own....
Hope someone will post here as soon as they find out more..
If it has the newer Xscale CPU it's very likely it will support SDIO. The SD controller is build-in the CPU and all Xscale CPU's support SDIO.

Ok, first off, getting your electronics info from "Stuff" magazine is like getting steak grilling tips from PETA. Plus all magazines like that are typically posted about two months after they are written, making them pretty useless for new developments.
Secondly, predicting a new XDA is like predicting that the sun will come up tomorrow, that winter will come in a few months, or that the curry I ate today will sting my ass tomorrow. It's obviously going to happen.
It's worthless until they say "on this date a new XDA with these features will be available." And when they can do that, you'll already have read it here two months earlier.
pc pro
i have a pc pro subscription. They had a review of the new iPaq with pocketPc 2k3. they went on to mention that all the pocket devices will be getting the update. including XDA.
Tomorrow never comes? But we old get older, and hopefully wiser...

One of the main reasons for a forum is for guys like me to wonder about stuff. Ask questions to other users with the same interest. Sometimes intelligent questions and some times less intelligent, but always within the region of interest of other forum readers. If you feel a threat is dumb, don't read it and especially don't reply on it. No need for smart-ass remarks here, we just want to chat about stuff we like.

You're all still great. I get a tremendous kick out of watching you all help eachother now that I've stepped back a little from spending 2 hours a day answering every second post. The fact that people still get timely and factual answers means this community really works.
A small plea to everyone:
This is a very busy board. So please try to make sure you use subject lines that describe the content. It means you should try not to use "I need help. Help me please!!!???!!!", if you can also use "Stuck trying to downgrade 4.00.10 to 3.17.03".
To make sure this board stays usable, I will be somewhat more actively renaming posts that have 'bad' subject lines, and I may be inserting small comments in square brackets here and there to indicate what I've changed, if that's OK with y'all.
no problem at all boss!!!
not wishing any disrespect Peter Poelman .. The work you guys do is amazing - I'm running SER 1.2 happily, the site is great and the level of expertise between your users is unparalleled.
However I have noticed that people with valid questions are being totally ignored sometimes (myself included) so it can feel like a bit of a "closed club" to us newbies sometimes.
I'm sure it's probably because we don't specify our subjects quite right, but I have tried to be polite, helpful and specific to no avail so I'm not quite sure what to do to get anyones attention ?

I personally do my best to answer as much as I can, and I see some others doing the same. However I do have other things, and if I really have no idea what someone's problem is, or if I feel the simplest search will answer the question, I may let it slip by occasionaly. Sorry if that's what happened to you...
thanks - it's not your fault at all, you're doing a grand job - I guess it's more of a community thing really - and as you say it is busy here, so it's down to everyone to have a go !
Now that I've got your attention though... Why does this forum look so rough in Internet Explorer on SER 1.2 - the layout on the XDA is all over the place - am I missing something, other sites look alright ? I've been searching for ages - honest !
Oh and lastly - I have to know - why Peter Poelman ? It conjures up images of loads of kraftwerk-like automatons slaving over circuit boards with terminator type music playing ...
The site looks fine to me, well organised, well presented, front page gives all the latest additions etc, maybe you could redesign it for the guys who are busy hacking and cracking and present it to them as a thank you for all their hard (unpaid) work on our behalf.

The rules of the collective say we can't talk about these things. I'll probably get in trouble, but I'll lift the shroud of secrecy just a little: we're half-human, half-machine, and Peter Poelman is actually my production serial number. We spend exactly half our time in large underground laboratories statisfying the machine parts of us by doing crazy-ass technical research, and then we go and spend the other half of our time statisfying our human halves with an abundance of sex, drugs and rock 'n roll.
nice one ...... and no worries, in your own time !!
besides - the connection speed with O2 is so slow there's no point trying to use this forum on my XDA, I just wait 'til I get home ...
Dear friends,
I just gave up after having spend the most obnoxious 2-3 hours of
life trying to activate a connection pc (asus desktop and Fugitsu notebook, both XP operated and performing very reasonably),attempting to connect with my HTC TRIN100 (3600, i believe) and suffering the infinite stupid bravoury of the M$ gif animation of a sort of hook shuffle approaching its natural craddle and then taking back as if byted by a wild small beast -- this scene altogether accompannied by a sonnar sound submarine prospecting-like. My God how ridiculous and poseur attitude can a bad programme assume!
I ended up deeply frustrated (after having even installed Office and
Outlook (which i hate) just to satisfy the demands of M$ Active Sync but reached nowhere in both my rigs.
Terribly enough i came to learn that there's no alternative application
at my disposal to entail a flashing Rom action from WM5 to WM6.1,
Mary 37, for instance.
Apparently there's a way to perform this operation from the SCard but
then again the so-called instructions are so frightening and full of
hardcore tech mumbo-jumbo specifics that i had to give it up. And the whole intention got buried within a my enraged curses and tachycardic insults.
Is there anykind soul that would lend me a helping hand in the said task??? I would be forever thankful and remember him/her in my daily prayers...
NO ONE?!
Oh, Well...
Somebody had previously advised me that xda-developpers was a very strict
club and that i'd better not use terms such as "mumbo-jumbo tech jive" and, as
it goes, it seems they were right.
I'm sorry if with my prose i hurt the feelings of any 'expert' but the fact remains
i need some help in my project and the last thing i aimed to was discourage any
possible help hint. Believe it.
Cumps,
HN

First of all, welcome and congratulations to your first post.
If you want to install android, you have to do it by your own.
See this thread as base for flashing anything.
Just be aware that switching a phones OS is no easy task and based on the fact you had to ask if T-Mobile would do it I get the impression your not the most technical person. So my advice to you, and this has your best interests at heart, get a native android device.
Oh and your reason for wanting android is probably the lamest in history. I have seen humans and animals with multiple missing limbs that were less lame

First off, that's a nice welcoming post to a new user. And how is that a lame reason? Yes WM6.5 had thousands of apps (or programs, as we used to call them ) but most of them were ugly as sin, glitchy, or for very specific or technical uses. They were not centrally gathered and it gets harder and harder to track them down. Coupled with no updates, no development, and lots of vital or useful apps missing, it's a fine reason to ditch the dead OS.
I say all this as a massive WM6.5 fan. But Microsoft made it a lame duck, killed it off prematurely, and came out with a nice but not great - and very locked-down - replacement in WP7. For me, Android is the natural evolution of 6.5, and I hope the OP gets on well.
Anyway, to the OP: Welcome! I tipped a new poster some tips on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18719054 - Good luck!
I have used WM6.5 on my HTC HD2 for over a year, and I must say it's just a dead end. I sticked with it, but a week ago I have switched to NAND android and now I'm happier than ever.
I think it takes a few days to read enough about sspl, hspl, magldr etc to understand what you need to do, but I managed to do it in 2 days easily.
If you need help, let me know in PM, I can explain what you should be looking for, it can be a bit confusing.
Cheers.

The above is a structured and decent reason for wanting to drop an operating system (well, if you leave out the part about programs being hard to find etc). WM always took the apporach Windows did to application development and that was "Do it, get it out and then fix it later". It was just how the world worked and still does in some circles.
The reason is lame for the simple reason that it completely ignores all logic and reason. A good reason is, as i said, is like the one quoted above, or more simply, because WM has reached EOF.
As for the tone of my original post, it's not like i screamed obscenities at the OP. I didn't even insult him once and i could have, very easily. Instead, I used my professional experience as an IT engineer and software developer, as well as my experience from years of hanging out on XDA to give an informed opinion on which direction I thought GoBlue should take. If you think it would be more appropriate for me to be rude, obscene, obnoxious, arrogant and generally unhelpful (like most 10 to 18 year olds i seem to run into on these forums and the internet in general) i will gladly oblige. It would not only be funny but also make a mockery of the testing process i had to go through to become a first round RD and i'm sure the XDA moderators would love to see that.
