Hey all, I have rooted and flashed my fist android phone thanks to this forum. And also soft bricked it during a voodoo 1click lag fix install and saved in Odin and re-flashed again lol.
I am looking for a kernel (like I know exactly what it is) that will increase the performance of my device. I currently am running Axura Final and have CMW and Titanium Backup installed.
What kernel would be best for my current set-up and p[referably one that I did not have to use Odin to start the process all over. Looking for a sort of download to SD and reboot in recovery and install type thing!

Here is a thread with all of Eugen's kernels, but you need to register beforehand. Also, stock EB kernel is good, it's found there...
I'm using "B_Stock_1120_100 Kernel" with all tweaks enabled and JFS on all partitions.. About the best stable experience you can get on any JK2 or JK6 based Froyo build IMHO..
Going forward, you may want to read up in here or post in General Q&A to avoid a flame fest, as this is not exactly development thread worthy...

Yes, if you are booting into and flashing from clockwork recovery..
You can put the clockwork recover update.zip in the root of you INTERNAL SD card and boot into from the stock 2E recovery. Alternatively, you can install Rom Manager and have it propagate the flash commands within android.
Perfect... Also, when I use titanium Backup, Will it save all of my current apps as well? Then I just restore from Titanium Backup again right?
To answer your question simply, yes, TB will backup and restore the APK an Data associated with a 3rd party application. Take caution when restoring anything other than 3rd party apps or apps from the market as you can easily make a mess if restoring from different Roms or Android builds all together.
You can do so via the batch menu, selecting to restore/backup all apps with data. If you are in fact a "N00b", I'd stay away from restoring system data and apps until you have a better feel with what can safely be altered. Also, if you don't recognize something in the list, don't restore it.

I just had a couple of questions about the whole ROMS and how to install them. I have my Vibrant rooted but I'm still not 100% sure how to root. What I looked up online is the following:
1-Use ROM manager to download recover image.
2-Download ROM and save it on the SD.
3-Boot into recovery (1st question can I boot into recovery through ROM manager or do I have to do it the manual way?)
4-Select option reinstall packages which take you to the ClockWork Recovery
5-Wipe date from phone (2nd question I've heard about NANDROID back ups but what exactly are they and what do they do? If i make a nandroid back up then wipe will I still be able to restore my phone to its previous condition through this back up?
6-install .zip from SD and Voila you have ROM.
So aside from the two obvious questions I just want to know if I have the correct steps?
The help would be greatly appreciated thank you!

1) Yes Rom Manager will let you boot directly into clockwork recovery.
2) Yes Nandroid will make a complete backup of your phone software and apps installed, so when you restore a backup it will be the same as when you backed it up.
3) Make your nandroid before wiping anything! Other wise your steps are ok.
Awesome!! And I can make the nandroid back up from clock work right? Also can I move the back up to like a usb or do I have to keep it on the phone?

Yes, you use clockwork to make the nandroid bakup. And if you like you can store the backup on your USB drive. Just copy the folder over and you will be all good. You only have to have the backup on the phone if you intend to restore a backup.
Whats great about Clockwork and Nandroid which works well with Clockwork is I have my stock rom all the way to my current. I just keep making backups and I restore if I want to compare. I have the following on my phone.
Stock
Vibrant4
Vibrant5
Vibrant6
Vibrant7
When I get a Rom just the way I like it I make a backup of it so if/when I have to leave it and possibly come back to it I just flash it. Also I would recommend Titanium Backup so you can backup your apps and reload them even if you go back on a rom. Makes reloading settings easier in your apps too.
Ok, so I just made a back up using rom mangers back up rom feature, am I supposed to specifically look for something that says "nandroid"?

You will only see "nandroid" if you boot your phone into clockwork recovery.
And, no, you don't specifically need to look for it.

Maybe I'm missing something, but wouldn't you want to keep your backup somewhere NOT on the phone? Because if you brick your phone, or corrupt it or something, wouldn't you have a tough time restoring with your backup file? I don't really get it.
Well I've done it I tried out Eugenes Vibrant Hybrid ROM and it was nice but I'll just wait for something else later on. my only question is once you install a ROM i would have had to DL all my apps again which is gay...
anyway i used Rom manager to create my back up of my stock build after playing with Eugene's ROM for a bit I restored my back up like a G.

Yeah, I loaded Eugene's ROM and played around with out a bit, then I downloaded rom manager from the market and restored the back up I saved on my sd. It was quick and painless.

2. Copy the entire backup directory to your PC for "just in case" scenarios.
3. Make a backup of your user installed apps using Titanium backup, and copy it over to your PC.
4. Download the ROM (i.e. Eugene's Vibrant9.zip) to your internal SD card.
5. Boot into clockworkrecovery (I use ROM Manager for that)
6. Install ROM.zip from SD card
7. Reboot into normal boot.
8. Verify the basic functionality of the phone, and make sure your satisfaction level goes a notch up.
9. Download Titanium backup from the market and install it.
10. Restore Titanium backup.
11. Crack a beer, enjoy your accomplishments, and DO NOT ask when CM6 comes rolling around

In regards to titanium backup... do you need the DONATE version to restore the apps properly. OR will they restore with all our data, but just not link the market? Thanks in advance!
Any way to get into clockwork recovery without rom manager or if the phone isn't booting up at all? I guess I could always leave an update.zip of clockwork mod on the phone. Is that what everyone else does?

I have a paid version, I don't think you would need the full version to properly restore the backup. I used it once to flash a different ROM, and I didn't have to re-purchase Titanium Backup again, I don't believe so.
Well every one tells me that the paid version of titanium is better because it updates your apps straight from the market or something like that. I just downloaded the paid version so I'll let you know how that works out.

You can also pack the backed up user apps into update.zip and re-install the packages from the recovery, so no need to re-download the Titanium Backup, it should be there once you re-install packages from the recovery after booting into your new ROM.
Im on my way to flash Axura 2.2.5.7 on my rooted vibrant . I titanium backed up all my system data and all apps using ‘back up all apps + system data’ feature of titanium. I, then, downloaded Rom Manager *free version… and flashed clockworkmod recovery…then rebooted into recovery and made a nandroid back.
I have now downloaded ODIN 3 v 1.70 on my computer.
I have been reading various guides (including vibrant wiki and bible) on how to root and flash roms.
Since I did ‘flash clockworkmod recovery’ yesterday..do I need to do it again?
Can any one direct me to a step by step process on flashing the Axura Rom.
I guess it’s the fear of the unknown while flashing for the very first time.

EDIT: I have copied the titanium folder from internal memory to my pc just in case. I also would like to make a back up of rom manager (nandroid backup or whatever it is caleld) onto my computer... How do I do that? I wasn't ablt to locate the folder.

The only other thing you need to do, is put the Axura2257.zip (Or whatever it's name is) on the INTERNAL memory card & flash via clockwork Mod or Rom Manager
sorry..a noob here and it might be a stupid question: Can I also use ODIN to flash the rom? I feel I would be more comfortable working through ODIN.

Im telling you!, its less the hassle and way easier to do it through Clockwork Mod

Just make sure you have two files on your 16g internal memory - Update.zip and the Axura.zip(can be named anything other than Update.zip for obvious reasons) file.
Reboot the phone into recovery. If it's blue then hit reinstall packages until it turns green with more options. This may take two times so don't freak if it's still blue after the first, just do it again.
Once in the green recovery go to install file from SD and select the Axura.zip file. Agree to everything and let it run it's course. Once done hit reboot now and enjoy.

Woah.. Were you on Android 2.1? Don't restore settings if you were.
Voodoo just converts to EXT4 (Which is faster)

You can't to my knowlege... 2.1 & 2.2 are very different, and if you restore the settings & apps then there are going to be allot of problems.. I would just reflash it and manually setup the settings this time, and then backup everything up for the next ROM you choose..
that sucks. I have alot of apps (around 70/80). I had customized settings on them. Its sad not being able to restore those apps and their settings. I can do with system settings.
But overall thanks alot for a great phone experiences. its extremely snappy now and im loving my phone again hehe...
Two things from my experience.
1. You should be able to restore all your apps you backed up in Titanium Backup as it seems to be able to tell what apps won't work with Froyo. You'll see them with a line through them in Titanium. Just restore missing apps with data using the batch feature. Do not restore the one with + all system data.
Then go to Backup/Restore at the top and scroll down to green [SMS/MMS/APN] Dialer Storage and click that and restore it too (this is your text messages). You must restart your phone now for it all to take effect.
2. After you complete #1 - Hit up the market for Voodoo Toggle Reboot app (free). Once it's open you can Enable/Disable Voodoo with it. Click it if it's not green and then hit Reboot Now to activate it. You'll hear Linda talking to you while voodoo installs which may take a bit so don't worry.
Voodoo changes the file system to ext4 which is way faster and very stable. Your phone will fly with it.
You will have to setup new settings for everything else this time, but if you use Launcher Pro you'll be able to backup your desktop settings for next time. Once you get everything the way you like it, backup with Launcher Pro and then with Titanium Backup for next time.
Make sure you don't flash anything else through clockwork with voodoo active unless the Dev says it's ok to do so. An example would be when Axura 2.2.5.8 comes out it'll probably be ok to flash without messing with voodoo (crosses fingers).
Does anybody know what is in an update package? Is it like a Windows Ghost image of a functional operating system or is it a collection of stuff that gets installed? What I'm looking for is, is it possible to edit the package to remove programs you don't want prior to installation?
I ask because I question how cleanly rooting and deleting apps through a file manager actually removes apps. Of course this is probably because I have a lack of knowledge as to how this OS works.
If you want a clean image, flash stock (if that's what you want to start from) -> root -> delete apps you dont want -> unroot (if you want) -> nandroid
Uninstalling apps is just about the same as deleting them manually, only you need to restart so android knows it's not installed and clears it's cache (uninstalling does it automatically i think?) Data should be removed either way (in same manner as cache)

I have installed Quick Boot which does nothing terribly useful that I can see so far. On my Streak (rooted), all it does is a simple reboot.
Do I need additional downloads to be able to make recovery images?
Nandroid backups
To do a nandroid backup (which I think is something similar to a disc image in Windows) you have to install either Clockwork Recovery or StreakMod Recovery. Personnally I had to use StreakMod because Clockwork gives me errors when it tries to backup all the files.
Just do a search here in the forum for either and they both have threads stickied with all the information you need.
One thing to be careful of is installing drivers, follow any directions to the letter and constantly check to make sure windows hasn't tried to install it's own drivers once you connect your Streak to the computer.
That has to be bar none biggest problem we all face, drivers, which are the way of communication between the computer and your phone.
What I finally did was used what is called the QDL tool to repair my phone, then took the necessary steps to install StreakMod recovery. QDL tool will put a Stock Froyo system on your phone. Once you have Streakmod installed then you can make a nandroid backup to get you back to that stock system (just as you would in windows) if you screwed up your phone by fiddling with it.
Once I made a nandroid backup of my Stock Froyo and installed all apps I wanted and got all accounts setupd, I went back and made ANOTHER nandroid backup of my system....
I forgot to mention the reason for making a nandroid backup after using the QDL tool to get back to stock froyo. The QDL tool will leave you with the stock DELL recovery which doesn't allow you to flash custom roms. So, install the custom ROM and then make an image of your system and then you won't ever have to go back and take all those painful steps to get StreakMod on your phone again, it will be a part of the image you created with nandroid.
Now with all that said, and Streakmod installed, it's a very simple process to flash Streakdroid to your phone, actually the EASIEST step out of everything I had done so far, but everyone has to jump through the hoops first I guess.
Don't worry about making a nandroid image after your initial install of StreakDroid, you already have it in the form of the .zip file you will have on your SD card.
So after getting StreakDroid installed, I setup all my apps again, with the launcher I liked, accounts and everything else, and THEN made another nandroid image.
So now I have two images to choose from, the stock installation with apps and accounts, rooted and StreakMod installed, and then a StreakMod image with all the same things, apps and accounts... I tend to go back and forth depending on my mood. It's only about a 10 minute process going from one system to the other, kinda like dualbooting a computer...
Whew!!! Have fun!!!
i just recently rooted my droid eris, i've had it for about a year and had the latest ota update. I did the one click root and now i'm currently running the vanilla tazz rom. I noticed there is a new gingerbread cynogenmod, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944430 and i'd like to to run that rom, is there anything i should know from switching from one rom to another? Or any other advice anyone might have would be useful as well. Thanks
1. I would download Titanium backup from the market. Instructions for its use can be found on its official page. Backup your apps but not your settings using Titanium Backup.
2. In the link I'm about to give you insert this step after step 4:
(step 4.5) On the recovery screen use the volume down button to select "make nandroid backup option". Make nandroid backup by depressing trackball.
3. Here is the link with info on copying ROMs

4. If you experience serious problems with your new configuration, you can always reboot to recovery and use the nandroid restore option to revert back to your previous ROM.
5. You can use Titanium Backup to restore your apps to the new ROM.

I'm sure you have read this and done it having a new ROM ànd all but after completion of your NAND backup it can't be said enough to do your wipes prior to flashing. Follow directions in the thread for the custom ROM but just to be safe I always wipe data and dalvik unless instructed specifically not to do so. Also, depending on your SD storage capacity I always keep extra copies of the ROM I have and the one I'm flashing but you definitely not necessary esp with a nandroid backup. I'm just always flashing and it can't hurt.
Also you may need to enable USB toggle in recovery and delete 'android secure' folder. I guess my best advice anyone can give is follow the directions in the ROMs thread I didn't look to see which it was. If you are unclear on anything before flash wait until you are sure. Hope we helped. I'm still learning every day.

Samsung galaxy note i717. I rooted my phone yesterday as I also updated from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2. I have learned a few things about roms, kernels, backing up, restoring, etc.
I have SUPER SU, titanium backup, and ROM manager.
I understand that all rooted phones must have a SU to grant apps access to the software.
As for titanium backup, I have deleted bloatware and backed up and verified all of my information. I also bought the pro version of titanium backup. But for the Rom manager, I'm not too sure how to use that yet. I guess Titanium is for backing up and restoring, and ROM manager is for downloading the new rom?
To get a new rom (someone please recommend one to me? Specifically for good battery life and a customizable UI)
So you have to download it from the computer, then move to your SD card. Afterwards, the computer part is done right? How do you get the phone in the mode to put in the new rom? And do you have to wipe the stock rom first?
Someone please please recommend me a rom and tell me step by step how to do it without bricking my phone... And to restore everything back.

I can't say which ROM to use because there is no need for another "best rom" thread.
Just pick one that you think would work well for you. Most CM ROMs have pretty good theming capabilities but being dead honest, any ROM located on XDA would do the trick so research and try a few.
However, you can download the ROM from the thread in the development section and move it with a file explorer to the root of the sd card. Finally there, follow the steps outlined in the thread specific to flashing that particular ROM. They are fairly straight forward.
Make certain the first thing you do is make a backup! Backup backup backup! That way you have options if things go wonky.
If the steps do not make sense on how to flash a ROM, come back here and feel free to ask. Same for restoring a backup. However I will say I have little experience restoring to full stock via Odin, so someone else may need to chime in.
