App to remove bloatware - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are there any apps on the market to remove bloatware? I keep reading about one called root explorer, but its not showing on the market...

Use Titanium Backup...

Sweet, didn't know I could do that with tb

+1 on using TB. It's just safer IMO.
Root Explorer works too (and I'm showing it in the market), but is dangerous if you're not sure what you're deleting. I think most bloatware is found in /system/app. Again, be cautious.

how do I use titanium backup to do this?

Backup/Restore tab, then select what you want gone and click "Un-install!"

If you have the Pro version of TB, you can also Freeze, disable an app (and make it invisible) without un-installing it. Then it can be unfrozen later if you find that you have a need for it afterall.

well, i paid for the pro version, but it won't actually install from the market...and i can't get any support from their website. so i'm just out $6 on that one i guess, but i'll deff try that, thanks!

In case you didn't know...paying for the TB Pro Key in the market doesn't actually download and install the app - you still have to download the app itself (which is the one listed as free).

Titanium pro let's you freeze and unfreeze if your not sure about system apps so it's good for noobs. Also the batch restore is worth the price alone.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.

yeah diesel, i knew that... i paid for, tried to download, and install the Pro version, but it won't let me... the dev's webpage has this listed as one of the first problems under the troubleshooting page, but even after i did exactly what they said, it still doesn't work... and they don't have an email i can contact anyone. it sucks cuz i could really use the Pro version too!

[Q] Do you lose apps when installing a new rom?

Do you lose apps when installing a new rom? I was wondering about purchasing Titanium Backup and Rom Manager but do not want to lose them when moving from Rom to Rom.
No...you dont lose them...you just reinstall them
The quickest way I have found to reinstall apps after installing a new rom is Appbackupreinstall http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=8&ved=0CEUQFjAH&url=http%3A%2F%2Fmarket.android.com%2Fdetails%3Fid%3Dtw.nicky.AppBackupReinstall&ei=CmqfTcqJBdSatwf-8vyYAw&usg=AFQjCNEgtEkpqjK9gwNYLEYKzfZTxZ3vSg&sig2=JwHdwgvngTsxAwmM9MIC7g
When you try to reinstall apps, I suggest one at a time though, when you try multiple installs at one time, it seems to cause FC's to happen. But, I use this app and save the appbackup folder to my desktop for safe keeping. It is pretty simple app to use.
Purchased apps are always available to you in the market to re-download. When you are in the market click on My Apps and you will see all of your purchased apps. I use Titanium Backup to backup before switching ROMs and daily just to be sure I don't lose anything. The purchased version lets you reload all of your apps without being prompted one at a time. If you have a lot of apps that is definitely worth it.
I was putting roms on my phone at one point every day or two. I never lost anything because I had good backups.

I agree with cyberpyr8, that is a good app, if you want to pay money for it. The one I suggested is free if you are penny Pincher like me.

[Q] Safe to remove apps?

Has anyone compiled a list of the safe-to-remove apps for the AT&T GSII along with corresponding .apk filenames, yet? I've already removed a number of them via Root Explorer, using the list of removed apps from Cognition's rom, but there's a couple that still remain and I'm wondering if they're ok to remove or not. A full list would be best, though I'm mainly wondering about:
Kies Air
Featured Apps
Social Hub
AT&T Hot Spots (doesn't show in app list, but still shows as a running app for me)
Don't know...I saw that AT&T Hot Spots wasn't actually in the drawer but it shows up as a running app too. I don't plan on removing Kies Air or the Social Hub (for the moment) but I'd like to remove "Featured Apps" but when I go into Titanium Backup it'll ask me if I'm sure I want to do this since it's part of the framework so I've backed off of it for now...I'd like to know about these 4 apps and if they're safe to remove as well.
I used root explorer and did it manually. I lost count how many I ripped out.

AT&T Family Map
AT&T Hotspots (if you do not use it)
AT&T Navigator
Buddies Now
City ID
Digital Clock
Dual Clock
Featured Apps
Live TV
Media Hub (not AT&T Bloatware, rather Samsung-delivered)
Mini Diary
Mini Paper
QIK Lite (if you do not use stock video chat)
Yahoo Finance
YP

From this thread.
Honestly I'd recommend installing Titanium Backup and doing a backup before you remove ANY apps. You simply never know if you might need them down the road for something. Sure 99% of the AT&T crap is crap, but there's no reason not to back them up first.
Also, if you're worried about it, buy the PRO version (of TB) and simply freeze ones you don't want to use. This isn't deleting them, it simply disables them.

I have the PRO version. I know about freezing but I was being lazy and I know there are much more adventurous people than me who've gone ahead and ripped things out. I didn't want to do the freeze app, okay seems safe to remove, repeat per next app deal. Like I said, I'm lazy...
Some of these At&t apps i cant find under root explorer, for example featured apps. what would be the file name for featured apps?

If you want to uninstall even more bloatware you need to get the app called
"SystemAppRemover" from the market. (everything will show up with this).
It makes it very easy to uninstall most any system apps.
The app has other functions too.
It's also best to flash a Nandroid backup of your rom before uninstalling
bloatware/system apps.
(use CWM Manager or CWM Recovery and NOT rom manager for backing up).
Good luck!

[WIP]Nook-Debloater[Dev]

Alright everyone, I'm just posting this thread for other devs and myself so we can see hat can or cannot be removed from the nook tab as far as bloat goes. So far, I know that the chess, sudoku, and launcher can so we can go from there.
If you see a * it means that it will remove atleast one aspect of barnes and noble service. After the * though, I will explain what gets interrupted.
Code:
List of files that can be removed:
home1.0 (home.apk)
chess
crossword
Applauncher.apk
social.apk * removes Nook Social
shop.apk *Removes the barnes and noble store (Books included)
email.apk Removes crappy email app (you can replace with the Email apk from gingerbread in the Themes and Apps section of the forum.
reader.apk
b3androidreader.apk
netflix
pandora
browser.apk *removes default browser *meaning it can't be accessed from the taskbar gained by clicking the nook button once.
flashplayer.apk
geniewidget.apk
huluplus
nookcommunity *removes nook social
quickofficeviewer
wwreader.apk
bnappinstaller.apk *Removes ability to install apps from B&N store
bnauthenticationservice.apk *removes email account on device therefor completely invalidating the use of any of stores etc.
bncloudrequestsvc.apk *Removes ability to sync B&N content with cloud
bnconnectivityservice.apk *Same as above
bnpolicymanagersvc.apk *Same as authenticationservice
airruntime
cryptoserver.apk *
demomode.apk
telephonyprovider.apk
Devs post here with other files you KNOW can be removed. I'll get around to writing a BASH script for the tablet to run to remove most of it.
What does Applauncher.apk do?
Personally, I'd like to keep Home.apk (which I assume is the default home) and the BN shop. I'll never use most of the other stuff, though.
i'll update this post if i come across any problems caused by the things i've deleted.
yea so I went a little crazy on my delete spree, but everything seems to be working. a lot of things like flash air etc i'll probably wind up reinstalling via the marketplace, but i wanted to start off as bare bones as i could. obviously i don't use any of the barnes and noble services nor do i use hulu or netflix so i remove everything I could find with their names in it.
I did the nook hardware test after i removed all this stuff and it passed with flying colors aswell.
<disclaimer>this list is definately at your own risk, because while it hasn't caused me any problems I'm making no guarantees for you. you probably SHOULDNT be removing these things, SO DONT DO IT, but I did anyways.. with no negative consequences for me. I don't use this as a way to connect to a bunch of diferent services, I'm using it as a tablet.</disclaimer>
definately don't do this unless you have the marketplace installed, along with homecatcher defaulting your n key to an alternative launcher.
home1.0 (home.apk)
chess
crossword
Applauncher.apk
social.apk
shop.apk
email.apk
reader.apk
b3androidreader.apk
netflix
pandora
browser.apk
flashplayer.apk
geniewidget.apk
huluplus
nookcommunity
quickofficeviewer
wwreader.apk
bnappinstaller.apk
bnauthenticationservice.apk
bncloudrequestsvc.apk
bnconnectivityservice.apk
bnpolicymanagersvc.apk
airruntime
cryptoserver.apk
demomode.apk
i'll probably wind up removing even more stuff.
and I don't know for sure but I wouldn't be suprised if one of those bn*apk's i removed broke ota updates, i have no way to be sure though.
Removed those from risho's post and everything is still working fine.
Updated OP with full list of apps that can be removed.
Question: how do you actually remove this stuff?
I'd like to remove the B&N bloatware but I'm not sure how do to that exactly.
Help?
You need to use a root file explorer and mount system as r/w and then go into /system/app

I would use Titanium Backup to backup and then uninstall one by one. Unless someone created a script to do it...
Um is there any chance that someone could run me through the basics of titanium backup? I'm new to this stuff and have no idea how it works.
Do you use titanium backup to uninstall the B&N apps? Or just to back them up, in case you need them again? And if you don't actually use titanium backup to uninstall the apps, what do you use?
Clearly I'm in over my head, any help would be appreciated.

I just used it to back up everything. Then I delete whatever I want one by one with root explorer. My hope is that at some point the whole "block OTAs" issue is resolved and then I can reinstall all the B&N stuff.

Antek App Manager
I used Antek App Manager which is free and allows you to freeze the apps which is like uninstalling them but it renames the files instead of removing them... then if it turns out one was important you can defrost the frozen app and it will work again. Or if it works out you can remove it permanently.
At least that is how I think it works...
Email apk
i replaced the stock email apk with the one Indirect gave us. It works fine in most aspects, but when I tried to open attachment, i would get a force close because of com.android.email.
Anybody ran into this as well?
Okay this is all great info, I think I understand how titanium backup works now.
Question for phon00b (or anyone who can answer it): why do you need root explorer to delete the stuff you don't need? Doesn't titanium backup do that, as well as back up? I see a feature in there for "uninstall," isn't that the same as delete?
I'm just wondering if I actually need to use root explorer (which I'm a little scared of) or if titanium backup will do the job just as well.
I doubt you need to use a root explorer. However, if you are scared of it, remember Titanium Backup has root access as well and can do as much damage as a root explorer if used "incorrectly." Backing up apps before uninstalling or simply freezing them, however, is *generally* safe, assuming you don't do it to something that the NT needs to boot. I prefer to use Titanium Backup in most instances.
No particular reason, really. I'm just used to doing it that way. I'm sure deleting through titanium will yield the same result.

Here's what I did. I use this app called, SystemApp Remover. It has this inbuilt 'Assist' facility, which kinda guides you to tell which apps are absolutely safe to remove. I used it to remove almost all bloatware that showed up safe to delete.
So far, i've removed almost all of Indirect's list, and also Library, Gallery, Music as well. It still works fine.
So i checked out system app remover but i gotta say, it worries me a bit. There are so many green apps (meaning potentially safe to remove) in there that it makes me wonder. Can all those apps really be safe to remove? Has anyone out there actually removed some (or all) of these apps?

Yes, most are safe to remove! I removed almost all of em, except the ones I knew were useful for me.
You can post here for help about an app if you are in doubt.
It's pretty safe to remove Soduko.apk and Library.apk too.
EDIT: I also removed telephonyprovider.apk without any issues (so far)

Sending back faulty Razr, non-rooted way to back up apps/data?

Sorry, this is a basic question as I am new to Android (coming from Win-Mo)
My power button sticks, so I will be getting a replacement phone. But of course I have already installed about 50 apps...
I know I can sync my contacts with Google, but how do I keep my apps?
I would prefer not to root (Titanium) given i am about to return my phone. None of my apps were that expensive, but I'd rather be able to get back up to speed quickly.
Is my best course to:
1. Re-install all programs from Android/Amazon market when I get the new phone
2. Somehow copy my apps and sideload them on the new phone
3. 3rd party program back-up that does not require root (not sure this exists)
4. SOL if i do not root.
Thanks.
FYI, any apps purchased from the Android Market are re-downloadable on another phone for no additional charge, so long as you sign in to that phone with the same Google account that you bought the apps from originally.
For example, I upgraded phones from a Droid X to my Razr. I used the same Google login. All my paid apps were waiting for me in the market. When I went to Market with my Razr, I hit menu button and chose "my apps", and there they were.

Unfortunately the only way to backup apps is titanium backup root. I personally. PS I sent my razr rooted and they didn't mind it being rooted lol

I am also new. Try My Backup Pro at the Market. It should do what you want.

Thanks, those seem like good options. I did not realize that Android Marketplace allowed you to re-download apps on a new device. That should be easy enough- or I will look into back-up pro.

You can root and unroot the RAZR with the press of a computer button. I have gone back to stock and then rerooted the next few days. Doom lords batch makes it quick.

Appbrain also will back up all your apps and reinstall them
Your best bet is to get app monster from the market. It won't back up your progress in each app like TB, but it will back up the apps themselves. Once you back them up, x-fer the appmonster folder to a computer, and put it on the internal memory of your new phone when you get it. Then get appmonster on the new phone, and once installed and launched, hit menu, then view archive. You can multi select, and bat have install from either SD or the market. I'd also recommend just copying all the folders from your current internal to a computer. Sometimes your in app progress will stick in the new device.
I'm also unrooted and have used this method on at least 5 devices for exchanges, and factory resets.

FYI, ginger un-root is a one-click unrooting app you can buy for .99 in the market. That's what I just used to unroot my phone as it's being exchanged for a new one tuesday.
For AppMonster do I need the Pro version or will the free version suffice?

Free version should work fine. Pro lets you batch install and stuff. Honestly I can't remember the differences, cause I got pro so long ago, but I do know that the free version works just fine for backing them up.

Install all apps at once

Hi!
Any way of having my Galaxy Nexus automatically start downloading my favorite apps from Market when I format my phone.
I have millions of apps and it takes always so much time to download them again. For example If I change rom its annoying to start installing all the needed apps when I t could easily just load the basic software automatically.
Somehow last time my phone did download BeautifulWidgets without my "permission" from the market and installed it.
So any possibilities to make this happen?

That is google backup feature. It will download all your preveously purchased app only.
I would rather suggest to buy Titanium Backup Pro. Damn good for app backup and restore in batch mode. Good filtering . You can even set the location of your app .
You need root permission to run it. But trust me it will be worth purchase...
You can always use MyBackup Root...is free is efficient and can also backup sms mms system settings etc

Seconded, I am a frequent flasher running a nightly ROM, so I live by Titanium Backup. The paid version allows for an express, confirmation free batch restore. Just set it, leave it, then once it's finished, reboot it.

I agree, Titanium Backup is the finest of its league. It'll cost you some money, but its totally worth it.
If you just want the apps use this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1314443
It also has a ton of other features, but it makes a flashable backup of all your apps then just flash the zip file and all your apps are back. It's much quicker than titanium but i use titanium for data. Best of all its free...
Hello and sorry for taking so much to answer but my Firefox lost all my tabs and I didn't remember this after that.
Okkay so thanks for the answer but those are backup software :/
I know how to backup but I would like it to work different.
Like for instance now I just got back to stock because wanted to see if I can update to 4.0.3 or 4.0.4 but sadly wasn't able.
So now I am probably gonna go to AOKP and after that is installed I need to once again install that big list of apps and its really slow downloading the one at a time from the market.
So I would like to have some way that I have list of programs I want and a software would get the apps from the market for me so I don't really need to do anything.

What you're wanting is much more time consuming and less efficient than the suggestions posted here. Your data wouldn't be restored, so you would have to setup the apps again anyway. You'd have to wait for the market to try to download all of those apps at once, which takes longer than restoring. And there are already apps out there that do what you want to do, the apps just aren't redownloaded from the market. Titanium Backup has other features too, and really helps with clean installs.
I don't think that what you want exists, aside from the built in Google backup. If you'd rather keep doing what you're doing instead of using backup/restore software, it's your time to waste.
