Permanent clockwork recovery? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im sorry if this has been covered, ive spent the last 2 days reading the Vibrant bible thread and also over on Cyanogen site and Android spin and im really frustrated with how often my device soft bricks.
i have 5 roms on my internal SD card and Rom manager running. i was able to use the option to install form SD card no problem for 4 roms and the 5th one was one called Hybrid R4 and when it rebooted into the clockwork recovery and performed the format and update then it rebooted into the Vibrant logo for 5 min. i removed the battery and rebooted so many times and same thing.
this is the 3rd time this has happened and its so annoying even more so because i know i have a good ROM on the internal SD card i can load up again but i cant get to it because i cant get into clockwork because i keep getting the stock samsung recovery screen with limited options resulting in having to use ODIN to flash the stock firmware and start over.
when i had my Mytouch i had a permanent recovery flashed to the device so i neve rhad to do this. are the Vibrants not able to have a alternate recovery console flashed to it?

which rom are you flashing over? It sounds like you are going from a 2.2 froyo rom. Hybrid R4 is from the time before the Devs started including Kernels with their roms. If you want to flash a 2.1 rom thats doesn't include the kernel over a 2.2 rom you need to flash a 2.1 kernel first. Search the bible for kingklicks kernel or Justanothercrowds kernels. Good luck.
Edit: also when you flash clockworkmod recovery in rom manager, it places a special update.zip in your root directory. leave it there. when you soft brick all you need to do in the samsung stock recovery is reinstall packages (sometimes needs to be done twice) and it will load clockworkmod recovery.
and they can have clockwork permanently flashed but it sometimes causes other problems. Eugene373 has a few kernels for 2.2 that have it permanently flashed, but it caused me issues when trying to flash another rom over it where i had no recovery at all, not even samsungs.

[Q] Recovery img flashing (Stock 2.1 rom)

Hi,
Due to HTC's special touches, the recovery image doesnt stay flashed, and on normal boot its flashed over (meaning if i try to go to recovery after a normal boot, i get the red triangle stuff, and have to pull the battery). I was wondering if this would potentially cause troubles if i was trying to flash a custom ROM from recovery? in other notes, i do find sometimes i have to pull the battery 4 or 5 times to get it to normally boot (thats without holding the buttons >.>).
Thanks in advance.
HTC HERO recovery image flashing problems
I am having exactly the same problem!
I did a quite a bit of research on how to root, backup and flash my HERO and every guide I found describes the process using Universal AndRoot + Rom Manager and it seems there should be no problems. I already rooted my phone successfully, installed Rom Manager and flashed either ClockworkMod 2.5.0.1 or RA Recovery 1.7.0.1 which are able to boot but only once. The next time I reboot I get the red triangle warning and it loads into stock recovery (by pressing vol_up + powroff buttons), so the custom recovery lasts only one boot cycle. I was able to backup but I don't want to risk to wipe and flash since there is a chance it might stuck in the bootscreen loop afterwards and I won't be able to do anything.
There is a thing with s-off and SPrecovery which helps to resolve the problem but it doesn't look like there is anything for HERO.
Any help would be appreciated.
ps I tried to manually flash recovery from inside the phone and from windows command line with the same result.
forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/8182-how-to-root-your-hero
posted some similar comments over there, and the only init script that i can find when in recovery.
Yeah I posted my question there too.
I was able to find some information about the issue (he is talking about Villain ROM but I think it doesn't really matter):
pulser_g2:
Repeat the process again, as I think stock ROMs try and overwrite the recovery each time they boot. When you finish the process, immediately nandroid and flash VR12. That will then flash a new recovery, AmonRA 1.6.2a, and you will be sorted

So it looks like we should just go ahead and flash a custom rom which, in theory, will eliminate the problem.
yeah was tempted to just flash, but sending duck my system img for him to dissect anyway.
yeah worked fine, running cm6.1 now
Yeah once you root you have to flash a custom rom before reboot or u loose the root
I learnt it after lots of reboots and re roots.
but now I wanted to know if I could save the original rom which i have as nand backup to make as an update.zip like custom rom for safe keepimg
I flashed CM6.1 -based TastyFroyo 1.2 and I can confirm custom recovery stays flashed now.

OTA 2.2 install clockwork recovery

I installed 2.2 ota from verizion then I rooted
Root works
I then installed clockwork from the market and tried to install by flashing from the app.
After I reboot the phone it goes in to the default recovery app and says invalid signature.
How can I get clockwork recovery install with the 2.2 rooted ota update.
Right after you install cwm you have to boot into recovery right after and flash a non stock kernal or cwm wont stick.

i havent done it personallly after an ota update( i hate vzw) but usually u have to install it through odin.. check noob thread in general
I did reboot in to recovery and thats when it tried to do an install and then told me it had and invalid signature.
Awesome development. Next time, post your question in Q&A.
To fix the problem, you need to flash CWM in Odin. "Flashing" it via ROM Manger only provides the update.zip on the SD Card. You need to flash a custom recovery kernel, as well as a modified regular kernel to be able to use CWM.
What kernel should I flash
I had similar trouble on 2 of our 3 phones. I had to Odin the file several times in a row before it stuck so I could boot into it and select my zip. It was like it wouldn't recognize it if you only did it once. I was probably doing something wrong, but lets just hope the end justifies the means.
Now have 3 phones running the Community Rom and we are hoping our batteries last more then a couple hours. They are certainly faster, my sons was almost unusable and my wife couldn't delete pictures after the OTA.
I still and at a loss for what kernel to flash Im fine with the stock rom. I eventually want to go to CyanogenMod when it it stable for the fascinate.
This might help.

Try the OTB kernel
You can find it under the fascinate development forum. It's currently one of the first posts.

How do I flash that kernel to my phone?

[Q] Best way Go from Stock to 2.3.4

Hey,
I am somewhat familiar with all the things we need to do but I seem to have lost the ability to do some things last night.
I am going to ODIN back to DL09 with repartition and atlas 2.2 pit just to ensure on stock then going to update all I can through OTA
(FIXED)
After I get to this point what is the best way to get onto the New GB roms.
I was on the test 2 from JT and then went back to stock and to evil fascinate. From there I went to the recovery and installed the MIUI and then the .1 patch both from andmer. I was able to install titanium backup and recover all the apps but did not do any system data. But for some reason after playing around I can no longer install anything from the market. says I am out of room but i can verify there is over 500 MB at least on the SD and internal storage.
So I read some people talking that it should be done in yellow recovery and I am not quite seeing how to get this. I am in the orange recovery currently.
So My plan again is to just start again from stock.
I just need to know how to go from stock to the yellow CWM so I can flash the MIUI from my SD card. Is there a file I can ODIN to go straight to the Yellow CWM and then flash the other files from the yellow CWM.
EDIT:
So the reason why I wen back to stock was that my wifi was erroring out and also could not install new apps as was saying there was no room when there was. So I ODIN to the DL09 w pit file and repartition and then ODIN CWM 3. Then installed the evil fascinate rom while waiting for a response here. I got ansy and in evil fascinate through the power menu booted into orange recovery. and then reflashed the MIUI rom. Then when on the regular rom I tried to install the terminal emulator and I could so then from there I went into su > reboot recovery. Finally success into Yellow to install the patch and the new Kernal. Now installing apps works agani and Wifi is not getting errors.

[Q] Clockword Mod Manager

Ok, so long story short - I went through a lot of steps to restore my fascinate to stock, and then rooted it through recovery. It worked fine until I installed Rom Manager and now my phone won't boot into recovery again. My question is - did I do something wrong?
I restored my phone to stock using Heimdall
Updated it to the latest version
Rooted it using odin and flashing recovery
then installed Rom Manager
Thank you for all your help guys!!!

download odin (onto pc), a non stock kernel and the recovery.zip that you want to use.(both recovery.zip and non stock kernel on your sd card)
Put your phone in dl mode and flash recovery via odin...when odin is done, immediately three finger boot into recovery and flash non stock kernel, and reboot.
Unless your on cm7 rom manager is useless and will bring more hurt then help, and your recovery is being overwritten by the stock kernel every time you boot which is why you need the non stock kernel...I personally would recommend a rom that contains a kernel...you can find a list of all roms, kernels, and recoveries in the dev section stickies.
Do you know how to properly flash roms, and kernels? I ask because I don't want to get you stuck even worse...if you need step by step instructions I'll reply later when I'm at a pc

You can give me a few tips and hints. That would be appreciated. Also, I thought the easiest way was through Rom Manager.
On a side note - what would be the most stable ROM to flash to the fascinate?
EDIT: Ok, so I installed PowerWashed 1.2 ROM and can handle this on my own a little bit. I'm still a little unsure on which roms are most stable/trustworthy, but I might stick with this one for a while.

GPS and Recovery Help

I rooted my samsung fascinate and falshed a CM7 stable, i loved it except for the fact that my GPS wasn't working. So after some reading and research, i learned that i would have to CWM recovery, flash back to stock, get a gps lock, and then restore back to CM7 and i would have a lock.
Few things went wrong, in my original rooting, i somehow managed to wipe data/cache, thus wiping the stock rom from the phone before i could make a recovery of the rooted stock rom. So when i went back to stock with Odin, i had to completely go back to stock (recovery, stock froyo, stock kernel, etc.) Even at completely stock i still couldn't get GPS lock, even though i could get gps lock before initial root, does anyone know why? I thought it was just Cyanogenmod but i flashed MIUI and still couldn't get lock, yet i was able to get a lock with out root.
after not being able to get a lock, i still needed to get back to my recovery that i made of CM7, problem is i'm not sure which version of CWM recovery i used in order to make the recovery, i'm almost certain that it was the recovery that came with the older rom manager version in the CM7 build i used, but i've tried multiple CWM recoveries and none of which is able to read the recovery files correctly and the recovery can't be fully restored. is there anyway to see exactly which version of CWM was used in order to create the dated backup files on my SD card? Or do i just have to keep trying different versions until one works? I've tried the latest CWM from ROM Manager for the fascinate, but unfortunately the latest version is still unable to read the recovery files
any help is appreciated. cheers.
...You dont have to root to flash a custom rom. That being said there is a guide in the general section that explains how to do things properly.
