The big launcher debate - Vibrant Themes and Apps

Hey guys. I'm trying to figure out witch launcher is the best out there. So I would like you, yes you, over there, yea you, to post your reasons as to why helix,And, launcher pro, panda, or even ahome is the best. So ready...go!
sent from my awesome phone that is the best that no one elses phone could ever live up to(vibrant) on ze app

Also on using launcher pro right now if it helps

I honestly think launcher pro is the best because of the way the applications appear when you press the button in the tray, the icons on the tray are awesome and I love how
The application come together when You press the button on the tray, but I dont like how you have to pay for their widgets which are awesome, but I guess its worth it

I like ADW.Launcher. It has lots of options, it's themeable if you want a different look. ADWNotify is an awesome addition to it. It's open source.

best launcher
I have to agree, launcher pro is the best. Im using launcher pro plus and I love it.believe me, I've tried them all

ADW.Launcher and LauncherPro are the two choices that I would personally recommend. Both of them are excellent choices. In the end, it's really up to you to decide which launcher suites you. Try both and play around with it to see which one is better.

Im using a heavily nodded version of touchwiz. Imho its the best launcher. It has landscape and portrait support on the homepage and the apps and it let's you set any page as the homepage unlike regular tw. It also has 4 icons and an app drawer.

I tried them all and zeam is the only one I use now. I like the interface better than all the rest.

+1 for Zeam. I have the pay version of Launcher Pro, and have also tried ADW, and TW, but Zeam has worked best for me. It's fast, relatively light weight, gets regular updates, and is not bloated with unnecessary features. I found that I just didn't need all the widgets, etc. that come with the others.

Im an ADW fan boy. I think LP is a little more user friendly. But if you know how to use ADWs settings, and use the bidden gems (hold an app over the trash for 3 seconds to un install, etc.) I find it much better. The latest update of ADW is amazing.

I too am a fan of zeam. Definitely feels less cumbersome than launcher pro (i have the plus, and I really don't care for any of the widgets). I much prefer zeam's dock, and the action bindings are awesome (i use swipe up for open dialer, swipe down to open app drawer, both of which save be dock space, and use double tap to open notifications)
It now lets you resize widgets and adjust home screen rows and columns- I see no need for launcher pro.

what's new in the latest ADW?

Rearranged menu settings, trash is located at top now when deleting an app off screen, 1/3/5 icon menu, ui changes that I think are great. Another awesome thing is that if you long press an icon and drop it back in same spot, you can change the icon. So for twidroyd (can't stand their logo) I changed it to the official twitters logo.

You know what sucks about it though... If you accidentally put an app over the app drawer button it stays there and you cant remove it, at least I couldnt, unless you uninstall and reinstall the launcher...

you actually just have to hold on the screen to bring up the menu and then go to custom shortcut -- pick activity -- launcher actions -- open/close app drawer

I use Launcher Pro....I only want a drawer button on my home screen.
Widgets to the side--JIC I feel like using them.

Launcher Pro all the way.

I use launcher pro plus most but I like messing around with all kinds of different things. I kind of liked GDE too but it's too bulky but I liked the customizations you could do with it. I also like adw with all the themes available for it and I think it's pretty similar to launcher pro but no widgets. The notifier is nice though.

[Q] What Launcher are you using?

Hello,
So I basically want to make a small survey that what launcher are you currently using and how is your battery life. I am trying to narrow down if some launchers are better for the battery life. I am currently using Touchwiz and get about 8 hours of moderate usage every day. Not good.
So how about you guys?
I used LauncherPro for a day but then removed it. It just hasn't evolved enough meanwhile TouchWiz, Sense UI and even MIUI have gone way ahead with their launchers. I don't think you will notice much difference in battery life between different launchers. LauncherPro renders stuff much faster but I don't like its appdrawer and dock.
Now I'm using TouchWiz until someone ports MIUI to SGS2.
GO, I prefer vertical scrolling to horizontal scolling in touchwiz and like that you can sort the apps alphabetically (who on earth tought it would be a good idea to make a horizontal scrolling app drawer and sort the apps by install time!?), also the running apps (+task killer) and recent apps tab are real handy
I'm gonna give Launcher Pro a go today. As for the scrolling, I quite like the horizontal scroll, but dislike it for seeming like the iPhone
By the way. How is the performance with some other launchers?
I used to have Go Launcher when using Desire. Now when I got this phone I first changed to Go Launcher also but then I noticed heavy battery usage and also some jerkiness with the scrolling, therefore I switched back to Touchwiz and still here. It is not THAT bad as everybody has been saying.
Launcher pro paid version.
Could have easily had 24hrs moderate use yesterday.
Tbh I don't think the launcher is one of the main factors affecting battery life though.

I noticed the similar jerkiness with the go launcher initially and ended up switching over to launcher pro for a bit. When i reinstalled go launcher to use the notification addon, transition was much better and the battery usage was on par with touchwiz
Builtin widgets are better with launcher pro but i like the notification addon for go launcher more.
I have both go launcher ex and launcher pro installed but the default launcher is set to go launcher

ADW Ex. Very pleased with it.
Currently 30% battery left after 2 days 3 hours, moderate use, but have removed or frozen a lot of bloat and/or stuff I don't use (Facebook, Twitter, games). Freezing TW launcher seems to have helped hugely wrt to battery life.
On KE2 stock.
I've got the following, adw launcher, go launcher ex,launcher 7, launcher pro, spb shell 3d and TW
Lol, for testing purposes
I usually use go launcher but have been trying regina 3d launcher, looks nice but i should imagine it would have more of a drain on the battery although im yet to confirm that.
ADW Launcher EX its the best choice for me, there are many themes you can use to customize it even more, the desktop scrolling efects are just great and i love the posibility to hide the main dock and the notifications bar, the screen just looks awesome then
Have had all the launchers mentioned already for a spin on the phone. I had been for the most part sticking with adw on the N1 but I was not able to get that to perform smoothly on this phone. Right now I'm actually using tw with most all of the wiz removed/frozen. I find I like it.
ADW EX. the only con is the no-bubbles on the dock. if I receive a message I can't see it in the dock, only in the notification bar.
I'm using Launcher Plus Pro. It's great, but it freezes on almost every boot. Have to wait a minute for force close to pop up, then it works beautifully. I suspect it's because the SGS2 is scanning the SD cards on every boot.
EDIT: Oh and I would have used TW4 if there was a way to alphabetically list apps.

There is an app on the market called sort apps that will sort the app drawer alphabetically. Requires root. Another thing I did was move the default home to center, instructions are available here. Hard to believe anyone thought that an unsorted app drawer was a good idea. lol

Can't find it. I've searched for "sort apps", "sortapp", "sortapps" & "sort app".
It popped up on mine (eu generic) used in the states. It also pops up if I just use touch wiz for the search terms.

Launchers For Nook Tablet

Is it possible to have the apps that I downloaded from Android market show up in the default nook launcher's app tab? I don't know how I feel about using go launcher ex. The nook UI is rather nice and go launcher makes my Nook Tablet feel like an oversized phone. I feel like that distinct separation needs to be there. What launcher are you guys using on your your tablet?
How do I install them (Some of them wont install via Android market (Launcher 7, Launcher Pro doesnt show up, Adw Crashes)?
I'm using both Go Launcher EX (which can be found here) and the default Nook launcher (with the Homecatcher apk found here)
I didn't install them via the market, I side-loaded them instead (click on the apk link and choose package manager, you will be prompted to install from unknown sources)
Not sure if you can get them to show up in the standard UI, but if there is a way I would also like to know. I like Go Launcher for the most part, but I prefer the standard UI for reading.
Wait for Omega Launcher from Syndicate apps. My friend promised it will be badass!
Nook color app manager from the android market can do this. Lilputing has an article on the front page about it.

Screenshots? Of it and the other one you mentioned?
OMG I am in love with the Ice cream sandwich launcher from syndicate apps. Anyone else playing around with it? How productive can I be with this thing?
When I get my screen sorted I will submit a screenshot in the appropriate thread here at XDA.
Amazing. I am stoked. Go check it out. ICS 4.0 Launcher rebuild2.apk is the file name.

By the way, you can get apps to show up on the default bn home screen by using Nook Color Apple Manager, found in the android Market. Install it, then run it once. It will show up in your daily shelf at the bottom of the NT home screen. Run it from there, and you will be able to long press on any installed app and copy it to the nook apps screen. Works for almost everything I've tried.

Nook Color APP manager (i looked for Apple and figured it was typo).
Now, i add it to my shelf but how do you run it from the shelves? Long press brings up delete/archive.. Short just brings up the icon and manage button? did I miss something (not that i would run it from shelves anyhow).

Yes, app, not apple. I ran it from GO Launcher first, though you probably don't have to. Once I did that, it showed up in my Nook home apps section. From there, I long pressed on it and it brought up the option to add to home screen. After that I ran it on the home screen and selected the apps (short press) that I wanted to add to the bn apps screen.

It works like that, but I believe what flipper is saying is that the apps don't launch from the "shelves" of the B&N Homescreen once he goes to the Library.
This is my experience as well, they will only launch from the home screen. If they would launch from the shelves I would probably use the stock homescreen instead of Go Launcher EX.
Use Go Launcher as App Drawer on stock NT
I have not rooted my NT. I sideloaded Go Launcher EX, and then used Nook Color App Manager to place the Go Launcher icon on my Nook home screen, and when I press the Go Launcher icon, the tablet automatically becomes and Android tablet. Then, I loaded all of my apps on the Android home screen.
What this does, essentially, is it sets up the Go Launcher EX icon as the "App Drawer" in the stock NT user interface. My Nook home screen looks just like it's supposed to, except the Go Launcher icon is on it.
Has anyone had any issues with the honeycomb launcher force closing? I can't keep it open

Try Alt Drawer. It is an app drawer for ROMs that don't have app drawers like MIUI but it works perfectly on the Blaze.

This is a question for anyone... which launcher is the fastest and most bug free? I'm more interested in usability than visually appealing. I found golauncher confusing with all the theming options and didn't like the phone icon on the bar, etc. It also seemed slow. The honeycomb launcher from syndicate looked nice but ran rather buggy. Haven't tried adw on this device yet, but I'm just looking for something fast and functional.

Post your apps that you theme with, or are worth paying for..

I saw a post for a replacement dialer and contacts here by seansk that has an ICS theme I really like, and I was wondering what other apps you guys may be using to get your phone the way you like? Or in a general sense, what apps you guys have that are worth paying for?
Figured I would ask in case someone else has a cool find.. until ICS is officially released, that seems to be the direction I have been trying to theme toward look-wise, but feel free to share anything cool
I'm using widget locker with ICS unlockers, golauncher and gosms with ics theme, exdialer and excontacts with ics theme.. the only app I know I paid for looks wise was beautiful widgets, but I've been using the included weather&clock widget that is included in bulletproof.
I was thinking of flashing the ICS battery with percentage in the bulletproof fourth bar sensi-fy thread, but I haven't found a screen of what it looks like yet..
If you're really proud of your setup, post some screens too!

2. also flashed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1366170 from the forum. they really did a good job...the have blue overglow effect and status bar looks great plus some other things...very nice work.
3. also a cool trick even if you use a third party launcher, go back to Sense launcher and make the skin blue in the settings, I think its under skin or themes or something like that...now all your check marks, progress bars everything becomes blue...like ICS...
4. oh yea and also widget locker with ICS lock

I'm gonna give your second suggestion a shot, are you using the ics.zip or the bliss_ics.zip? I didn't see him say what the difference is.. and the few "skins" or "scenes" that came with bulletproof don't seem to make a difference.. but I'd be interested in giving it a try.
Besides the dots being blue when I switch screens in golauncher, this seems to be where the theming is for golauncher.. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13692699/2012-01-26_13-42-33.jpg can you post screens for how the launcher ex ics looks?

And would have an input method button.. no matter how many times I clicked it, it kept coming up, and the status bar never loaded.. so maybe it doesn't like bulletproof? I'm flashing the rom again, should be fine, but wish that theme worked, it looked sweet

I definitely like the look of that launcher theme, I just can't give up the functionality that comes with golauncher.. and definitely thanks for clarifying that about the bliss thing, since it was posted in the amaze section I didn't give it much thought(I'm totally new to htc/sense products). I'd do the whole theme that you have, but that black on black is a deal breaker for me.
Here is my homescreen, I try for a minimalist look, which is hard considering I have over 130 non-system apps(I still need function)..
My solution is a folder within folder setup.. if I click the icon in the bottom right I get:
Then if I click the google app I get my autoapporganizer folder:
Autoapporganizer is kind of ugly, but I can backup the folder setup with titanium backup, the shortcuts don't get weird like widgets do when you flash a new setup, and long pressing an app allows an uninstall that also backs up the app.. I can't find a better looking solution that has nearly as many features.. hmm, wonder if it can be themed..
Here you go lots of screen shots and some camera shots with the amaze...

System Tuner Pro
Others I use are:

Documents to Go (full version)
VidTrim Pro -video editing

My Beach HD LWP
These are all of the paid apps that I purchased AND rated 5 stars. No need to list poor apps I bought and got hustled on

Go Launcher HD beta for tablet is out!

http://golauncher.goforandroid.com/2012/03/go-launcher-hd-v1-0-beta/
I use Go Launcher EX on my phone and liked it alot, but on TPF it was rather disappointing. Glad to see they are working on a tablet version! Trying it out now.
oh man - I love it too on my phone.
And I just got my hubs set up on adw - have to do it all again...
Looks pretty good so far. Still missing a lot of the customization features (transition animations and themes for example), though.
This launcher isn't smooth like stock or apex, trebuchet, nova.

looks good, but lot of work on it
I really hope this turns out well with all the customization that adw has. There are some things I've just always really liked about go launchers (even though I use adw) such as the way you set up folders(its so much faster) and other small things. As long as I can make a nice hubs layout with this and its smooth i'll definitely switch

Yes you are right. Compare to stock, even at 1.6 GHz, the scrolling animation isn't very smooth. Hopefully they'll get that fixed in future updates.
A step in the right direction. Definitely missing a lot of features tho.
It's a good start. Obviously still a lot of work to do and features to add but I see potential.
Not feeling it yet. On all of my tabs I have stuck with the stock launcher. On gingerbread I was adwex and nothing else whether it was sense, tw, or mb. But hc and ICS I've been sticking with stock..... feels like they got it right.

same here stock is the only one that don't have some issue...tried every other big name launcher....sucks

i agree with you guys in that stock is doing what it needs to do for me. i moved to this for 3 reasons...
1) Go Launcher has done some great things with my phone so i was optimistic that i'd eventually switch to this on my tablet.
2) the dock bar is cool as it stays there via all the homescreens. i have access to gmail, the market, touchdown, and my browser from any any homescreen.
3) this was the main reason. i feel they've gone leaps and bounds with the widget/folder/shortcut/app adding section. instead of going to the app drawer and dragging icons one at a time doing the same steps it allows you to select your apps first via a top scrolling area, then organize after. if you want to add a folder, you can select the apps you want to add and then it gets added after you're done.
reason 3 is a path i hope and imagine all other launchers would go through. makes restoring a lot easier, aside from the obvious backup and restore.
cool im going to try this!
Installed and using it for an hour. First impression "Excellent" and welcome step by Go Launcher. The Go Launcher Ex was not for tablets. I am using it for ~2 hours. Smooth and clean. I especially liked the edit mode. In just one edit mode you can modify wallpaper, add app shortcuts on all desktops & add widget. This feature is definitely better than the stock and ADW EX. I believe Sony has similar UI for tablet S. I liked it when I researching tablets. Waiting for more features.
+ 1.
can anyone confirm that this is hardware accelerated?
hi at all,
thanks for the great app "go launcher hd".
it's run perfect on my prime, very good speed and stable but with some faults...
i found the following bug:
1. no more apps/games than 24 in 1 directory
- if i create a directory in app drawer like "SPIELE" and i move in this directory 24 games i have a problem.
after a short time or reboot the directory "SPIELE" is not exist anymore, so all my apps/games are normally selectable through app drawer without the created directory, becouse is missing.
2. max 24 apps/games in one directory
when i post more than 24 apps/games in one directoy, the new added app is not listed. on the app drawer the app is missing to. only when i make a new sort the app will be listed, but not in the directory itself.
3. app drawer directory link and desktop directory link are not the same
when i create a directory and make a link to my desktop quick start list, all ok, but when i add more apps/games with app drawer to this directory, the apps/games are not listed in my desktop, so i must delete first the icon on the desktop and add the new changed directory link to the desktop.
4. no oppinion to add apps/games from app drawer to quick start list.
add apps/games are only possible from app drawer to desktop and than from desktop to quick start list, but not from app drawer to quick start list.
5. running apps listed are not correct?
in app drawer category "running apps" are not correct, many apps listed for allways run, like
some root apps like "samba filesharing" (is definite status "stopped") and some asus standard apps like "mpe notice, mail, messenger, facebook, navigation, talk -> they are listed as always run, but i found no process for it.
tested:
version beta 2 go launcher hd
os: asus transformer prime 9.4.2.15 DE
Nova
I have to say Nova launcher is still my fav, lets me use as much landscape possible...
I should qualify that.... it is Nova Launcher Prime....

Best launcher for tablet mode?

I'm wondering what the best launcher is for tablet mode. I know touchwiz doesn't like 213dpi. I have used apex before and its nice, not real familiar with nova launcher. Are there any other launchers that work with tablet mode? What about go launcher ex or go launcher HD?
Also what is your favorite rom for running tablet mode?
I'm using adw ex and happy with it

Adwex and nova prime are my two go to launchers. Adwex hasn't been updated forever so it doesn't have a strong ics feel to it like nova can.
Nova prime seemed to keep icon sizing better on homescreen as well. But it seems to also limit your grid size. I'm at 213 and can only do 7x7, it may be dpi dependent but I don't usually rock tablet mode so haven't tested. Adwex will let me do 10x10 if I want.
I also like that nova puts the menu at the bottom of the screen while adwex puts it up top which can be out of reach maybe for some.
Here are two quick screens to show stuff I'm talking about. Since I primarily use phone mode I still prefer adwex for some reason lol, I think because I can change the dock icons size in adwex and not nova.
Nova prime

Adwex
Also, I know some people will say apex is best, but I bought it, used it, and at the time it was pretty lacking. I don't think I could even set the drawer to transparent. I've never gone back to it and don't see a need. I've also run go, tsf, spb3d, ez, hi, and pretty much everything. So I've bought some I don't even really use anymore lol. But if I had to recommend one to buy, I'd probably say nova prime.

As a Cyanogenmod fan I have to recommend Trebuchet. It's just an improved version of AOSP's stock ICS launcher but it supports both tablet and phone. I haven't used it on my Note (which is 240dpi phone mode) but it works well on my HP TouchPad (160dpi tablet mode).
I wish you could use tablet mode for apps but keep the phone notification bar. The Note has capacitive buttons so it seems stupid to waste a bunch of screen real-estate for on-screen tablet buttons that are redundant.

Awesome information. I will definitely check those out. I was never a fan of the default adw look, but admit that because I that, I never really gave it a chance to make it look any better lol.

Yeah I heard ya on the redundant buttons. What is the benefit of running at 240dpi as opposed to 320?
I am adding a second question to this post. What is the best rom for running tablet mode? I know rom choice is subjective and can depend on your phone hardware, what works for one might not work for another. But I don't feel like spending hours and hours setting up multiple roms the way I like in tablet mode. I mean I will if I have to, but I am wondering if there are 1 or 2 that are way better then the rest. So far I am leaning towards either Hybrid rom or the collective mesosphere remix.
Here's mine with adw ex. Still messing with it.

I have used Go Launcher Ex for several weeks after getting my Note and it works really well in tablet mode, widgets scale nicely.
But right now I am using the h0tw1r3 ICS rom and it works great in tablet mode as well

Well maybe I will try h0tw1r3 then. Having trouble finding a rom I like that will do tablet mode. Starting to wonder if tablet mode is worth all the hassle. Wish it just worked and I could try it out to see if its worth it, lol.

you'll be able to see more things on the screen, for example there will be more stuff to swipe in the notification bar, more icons in the app drawer and icons/widgets will be a little smaller. be careful though because you'll have problems with the Play Store at certain dpi's.

It's sort of like taking your computer resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768.

I tried leaked S Voice APK and just like Samsung confirmed, it is only a test app and has many bugs. You can actually hear the difference since leaked test voice sound garbled. Latest one below is one that cam with S3 Rom leak and more up-to-date.
HOW DO YOU INSTALL?
1. Download ZIP on link below(Extract on your desktop). If you download to phone directly, you still need to extract to a normal folder.
2. Contained within is 2 files.(voicetalk.apk & libsvoxtts.so)
3. Place voicetalk.apk in system/app with "Root Explorer" or like(Use Mount R/W and set permissions by holding voicetalk.apk to see sub-menu). Make sure to make permissions as "rw-r--r--".
4. Now place libsvoxtts.so on /system/lib.
5. Reboot *****NO NEED TO CHANGE build.prop such as with others.
6. ENJOY, then ask funny questions to it.
__* IF YOU HEAR NO FEEDBACK, try turning media volume up by opening phone dialer or on youtube video, or a music song and such.

***NOTE: I did limited testing, if you try on other roms and does not work, just delete both files.
***Warning, Try at own risk...Let me know if it works on other Roms not mentioned on Title...
