Try to use another USB port and don't use any USB hub.
Check thread about rebranding or region changing - there can be backups.

Have you installed PC Companion ?
Does it detect your device ?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863549

I tried every usb port, no dice.
I do have PC companion installed, it does detect my device fine
and Xperiax10i user, I went to that guide and followed it, still same message. I tried it it on two separate machines

Have you installed and run SEUS, which means running the program, connected in flashmode so the drivers installed?
If you've tried this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825201 - twice, try again, after doing the above if you haven't already, and post a screenshot of the error message.

this is the method i used on my att x10a
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825201
basical, download and extract that x10flasher tool. download the 2.1 firmware. extract the firmware to a folder and rename the folder to 2.1 World. in that folder you should just have a number of .sin files. copy the 2.1 world folder to inside the x10flasher tool folder that you extracted.
run the x10flasher.bat file, click flash firmware and in the dialog box, you should see a rom called "2.1 World", highlight it, but don't click ok yet. turn your phone off and unplug it from the usb. hold the back arrow key and plug the usb into the phone. once you see the green LED light, click ok to start flashing the rom.

It gets stuck at this screen. (attached)
It says flashing, but hangs there. What next?

I think it might be that you don't have the right drivers installed. You mentioned that you have installed PC Companion, but have you tried updating your phone via that method first? What I mean is that your computer needs to install the initial flash drivers on your computer. So, set your phone up in flash mode with PC companion first and check for updates. PC companion will either say there is an update or not (I think there is a non 2.1 update available but you don't have to install it). Once that is done, disconnect your device, and close PC companion and retry to 2.1 flash method. It should work then.
Also, make sure you have the latest version of Java if not already.

I have the same problem
Hi am looking for help .. i tried to go through the forum and try out different things but couldnt get the steps to work. I always get the Java execution error:

These are the things I am doing:
1. Update to the latest Software using SEUS. --> Result Still @ 1.6 but factory settings
2. Put the phone in flash mode. --> Result no issues so far
3. Downloaded the firmware files in rapidshare/files/428167773/2-1-nordic-ec.rar
4. Downloaded the X10Flash_2.1 from multiupload.com/D2HUTL9CCA
5. Copied the files from Nordic Dec to C:\X10Flash-2.1\firmware
6. Ran the X10Flash.bat and selected the OS.
Everytime i get these errors
I tried this on WinXP SP3 and Win7 Pro and Win7 Home. I tried this with different generic firmwares, different Flashers . But after around 30-40 tries, i still get the error..
Can someone help me please??

Hi Thanks for replying, i tried the new flasher also, but it gives me the same Java error. So i googled around and found JPTNs Multi-Pack which has java included and everything. For a while it looked like things are working.. But unfortunately i still got the same error:

I got one more question... lol
When I receive sms messages, the blink rate is really fast and its hard to see when I got a message. Is there any way to change the rate of how fast it blinks? In 1.6 it was a reasonable rate where I could actually see it.

[outdated; delete?] Newbies Guide to Rooting X10

Use Bin4ry's/Androxyde's flashtool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
outdated stuff:
There seems to be a lot of questions regarding the steps laid out in the official thread, so here I'll try doing a STEP BY STEP guide for those who are confused with the steps.
I borrowed some stuff from the original guide, so thanks Bin4ry, jerpelea and biktor_gj for everything!
NOTE: Before you begin, you should know that this process will wipe everything off your phone. So backup your contacts, and text messages and everything on your phone! Download a free backup program from the market to make backups onto your SD card, and after you're done everything, download that program again and restore everything from SD card. Your SD card remains fine.
1) Install SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service).
You can get it from here: http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/download/1/110/61/1275980198/Update_Service_Setup-2.10.6.21.exe
2) Run SEUS, follow the prompts. You don't need to update the phone through it, but get the phone ready for updating. This process should install the drivers necessary for the rooting process.
Note: I suggest you keep your USB cable attached to that USB port. Remember which USB port of your computer it's attached to, as changing USB ports can lead to a bit of confusion for the next 2 steps!
3) To check if #2 was successful, click on Start, click Run, and type: regedit
In the Registry Editor that pops up, click on Computer, press CTRL+F, and search for this: USB\Vid_0fce&Pid_adde\
After it's finished finding, on the right side you'll see DeviceInstance, then it says REG_SZ, then it says something like USB\Vid_0fce&Pid_adde\5&270d2a78&0&3
You'll need that last bit (in this example: 5&270d2a78&0&3 Yours would probably be different). This is your DeviceID (you'll need it soon!)
Note: You may have multiple of these if you plugged the USB cord into many USB ports on your computer. Each USB port will give a different DeviceID, so if you have more than one DeviceID, you'll have to choose one, and if it doesn't work (you'll find out when you reach #5!) you will have to choose another one.
Alternatively, download the file in the next step and extract it, go to the folder called 1st, and run the DeviceID.jar file. It should give your DeviceID
4) Download this:
http://filevo.com/1nlq8wryo11u.html
or from here: http://rapidshare.com/files/404363083/i_R1FA16_ft.rar.html
Extract it.
In the step1 folder, you'll see a file called DeviceID.txt
Open it up, delete whatever's there, and put YOUR DeviceID (that you found from the previous step).
Save the file and close notepad.
Note: Make sure there are no extra spaces or lines after/before the DeviceID. The ONLY thing that should be in the file is your DeviceID, NO SPACES/LINES (for example, only this: 5&270d2a78&0&3 [yours will probably be different])
5) Take out the USB cable from your phone (leave it plugged into your computer)
Turn your phone OFF
Open up step1.cmd (it's not inside the step1 folder, but outside it), but DON'T PRESS ANYTHING
Now we have to put the phone into flash mode. This is how you do it:
Hold the Back button on your phone, and while holding the back button, insert the USB cable into the phone.
A green light should come on the phone (like when it's charging or a missed call)
Quickly "Press any key to continue..." in the open step1.cmd window.
Let it finish what it's doing. It will say "Press any key to continue..." after it's finished. Until then, DON'T touch anything!
If you get problems in this step, refer to this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6970868&postcount=3
Here's a helpful video for common java issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=713457
After completion, this will give you a Generic X10i R1FA016 firmware (check it by pressing the left button, go to settings>about phone and at the very bottom under build number)
Keep your phone plugged into the USB.
6) Download this:
http://filevo.com/yzmh8wlyrgtz.html
or from here: http://rapidshare.com/files/404359845/ROOT_F2v2.rar.html
Extract it.
DELETE step4 folder, step5 folder, step4.cmd and step5.cmd
Now we're going to put the phone into Debugging mode:
Turn your phone on if it's not already on.
Press the left button, go to Settings>Applications>Development and check on USB debugging, press OK in the popup. Plug the USB into the phone (in case you disconnected it). You should see an exclamation mark at the very top left of the screen of the phone.
Do NOT have the SD card mounted to your computer!
Note: This next step can take a while!
Open step2.cmd, don't press anything!
On the phone, a list of buttons will come up eventually. Press the 6th option (something about update from SDcard). ONLY PRESS IT ONCE!
Leave your phone alone. Go to the washroom or eat a snack.
You'll see the progress on the phone screen, as it installs the package. Leave everything alone.
After completion, this will give you a Generic X10i R2BA023 firmware.
If you get problems, try this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7003121&postcount=1122
7) The phone should be on, USB plugged in, and already in USB debugging mode.
Open step3.cmd, and 'Press any key to continue'
Let it finish what it's doing, it will say 'Press any key to continue' at the end after it's finished.
After completion, this will give you ROOT! And it also installs some programs for you.

Additional steps for X10a:
Download this:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BY0GZBM3
Extract it.
Inside the step4 folder, there is a DeviceID.txt file. Remember you've seen this before? Copy the same one from step1 folder that you did in #4, and put it into the step4 folder.
Follow #5 (except with step4.cmd)
Next, turn the phone on (if it doesn't turn on, unplug the USB from the phone, and try turning it on again, then plug the USB back in). Put it in USB debugging mode if it's not (if you forgot how to, look back in #6)
Open step5.cmd
After it's done, press the left button on the the phone, go to Settings>About phone and under Model number it should say X10a

Market Fix:
If you have an X10i, follow this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=719486
Otherwise if you have an X10a, use this file instead, but follow the same instructions as in the link above: http://rapidshare.com/files/405188255/Market-Fix-X10a.rar
_____________________________________________________________________
To delete preinstalled programs you don't want, such as Moxier:
Put phone in debugging mode if it's not already.
I recommend you unplug USB from phone so you don't end up running some file and messing your phone
Open up the step3 folder. Right-click on cleanup.cmd, and click on edit.
Whatever is there in that list of "@adb shell rm /blah/blah/blah" will get wiped off your phone. So change the list as you want. If you're unsure, REMOVE IT FROM THE LIST!
After you're done making your list of apps to remove, save the file, plug USB into phone, and run the file.
Here is a thread that says what some of the applications are, and additional ones you can add to the list, to remove from the phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714021
Alternatively, you can install Titanium Backup from the market (it's free!) and use that to uninstall some applications. Also, it's really great for making a backup of your stuff (you can backup more things now since you have access to more things since you now have root!)

If you are experiencing difficulties, try reading through this thread, since it may already be answered: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711969

nice work dude.
Great tutorial !
I followed this guide but when doing step 2.cmd, i did as I should and when I came back there was a picture of a phone with exclamation mark on it.
I thought it was done so I took off the usb and restarted the phone and it redid the whole progress thing, this time with the pic of a phone and an arrow pointing to it.
The phone restarted but now it won't go past the screen where is says "sony ericsson". What do I do now?

What I would do is try restarting the phone; if that doesn't help, or can't restart it, take the battery out, and put the battery in after 5 sec and try starting the phone again. If that doesn't help, or it stays as an exclamation mark, start from step 1 again
Yep I redid step 1. I don't know what that exclamation mark thing was for. I hope it doesn't show up the next time I try it.

That's all I ever got from Step 2.
"error: device not found
error: device not found
"select option 6 SDCARD UPDATE"
Press any key to continue . . ."
Thank GOD though, someone had the sense to say "option 6 ON THE PHONE".
I was looking to press it on my PC keyboard for ages. I don't even know if I missed the option appearing on my phone but I don't think so as it always said the above on the PC.
Anyway, I gave up and used SEUS to update. Flashing in step 1 gave me a generic firmware and removed my O2 UK branding. SEUS then updated to the R2BA020 before it was available on O2... battery life vastly improved but I am missing a few market apps.
And now I can't even manage step 1! I am no fool and I am in IT, but I am pretty confused by all this. I only wanted to remove f***ing Moxier apps and improve battery life. Now I've lost access to stuff on the market, I kinda wish I'd waited for O2 to release it officially!
The Java app from pre-step 1 for finding phone ID just displays a blank screen too. I've got 3 different IDs on my PC and none of them work now. I assume as I got the "official" generic FW OTA, perhaps they locked out this method?
Frustrated at losing access to market apps more than anything.
Are you sure the device is in USB-debug mode? When you plug the USB into the phone, make sure that exclamation sign at the very top left of the screen comes up, and then try running step2.cmd
Step 2 Problems
Okay I'm in the right thread because I am a total root noob.
This is my first attempt at trying this.
I'm running an X10a on Rogers.
I've been following the instructions to the letter, but I just can't get step 2 completed.
This is the error I message I get: "Failed to copy 'fota.pkg' to '/sdcard/fota.pkg': Permission Denied" ... blah blah blah.
I can't seem to get past this "Permission Denied" issue.
Any help is appreciated.
Great Guide...
I got the following error message which at step1. I am sure I followed all the installation steps(with Java installed) and switched the phone into flash mode already.
Can anyone let me know how to resolve it? Thank you very much.

Help
I run the whole process to root R2BA020, working well.
I was updating the rom R2BA023, and run the 5 steps, my X10 only shows a drawing of the X10 with a triangle with exclamation. I need help to restore the X10.
@wongrhy
Go to command promt and type javac and hit enter. If it does not display java help options then path is not set correctly.
Try setting up the path with the following command on the command prompt
path={PUT YOUR JAVA BIN FOLDER PATH HERE}
Make sure you change/put the java bin folder path above.
After that try running the flash again.
@Topic Creator.
I guess you forgot to mention that the DeviceID.txt from the Step 1 has to be copied in the Step 2 and Step 3 folder.
People who got error in Step2 and Step 3. Put the DeviceID.txt from the step 1 folder into Step 2 and Step 3 folder and try again.

hello friends I have read all topics and I have tried everything, when I run the regedit in windows and put "Vid_0fce & Pid_adde" I do not see the DeviceInstance try putting "USB \ VID_0FCE & PID_ADDE" and I do not see anything I have Windows 7 32bit everything I've done with the phone plugged into debug mode but nothing that I get something, and when I run the file if you put nothing opens and when I plug in flash that I close the program
You have to have SEUS installed and PC Companion.. run it through PC companion once. Then do the regiedit thing.
To put your phone into flash mode, turn off the phone completely, then hold the back button and connect the phone through USB to the computer.
(when you do this, make sure PC companion is NOT running)

[Q] Xperia X10a AT&T flash to 2.1

Hi,
I have purchased Xperia X10a from AT&T currently running Android 1.6. I went through many posts in this forum but couldnot figure out what is the exact way to get Android 2.1 on this phone. I know AT&T has not rolled out 2.1 updates for this phone. I would appreciate if anybody could help me in finding an exact method to get Android 2.1 on my phone now.
Thanks in advance!!!

Read completely thru this then do search in Dev.

download this
http://www.multiupload.com/9N5BJ7II13
and extract it
you should have 2 folders, x10 flash and the firmware folder. inside the x10flash folder, you will need to create a folder and name it 2.1. open up the firmware folder, copy all contents from that folder and put it in the 2.1 folder you just created in the x10 flashtool folder.
on your phone, go to settings > applications > developement and make sure usb debugging is enabled.
turn your phone off and unplug the usb cable.
run the x10flashtool bat file on your computer. click flash, there will be a separate pop up. highlight 2.1, but do no click ok yet. on your phone (still off), hold the back button while plugging in the usb port. once you see the green LED on your phone, click ok on the flashtool.
it should start flashing.
once it finishes flashing, it may take a couple minutes for your phone to boot back up. if it doesn't turn back on after about 2 minutes after fininshing flashing, press the power button. it may take a few minutes to fully boot up.
once it boots up, click root on the flash tool and follow the instructions.
after rooting, download this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833324
i would suggest only running the JIT option. unless you want to strip everything out of the firmware (you may loose some options you want).
after you get JIT enabled, go into market and purchase root explorer. excellent app to have. once you buy/install that, open root explorer, go to system/app, click mount as R/W. delete these apk's and only these ones (unless you think you want to use any of them)

Yes it is normal. You can think of H as 3.5G which is better than 3G. It is what every U.S. wireless company is falsely advertising as 4G
I was just wondering about why my phone couldnot get this 'H' network aka 4G network when my phone was running android 1.6 and was not flashed???

[Q] Firmware problems

Ok, so here is what I did:
I have a X10i with R1FB001 firmware with Android 1.6 and I flashed a X10i_2.0.A.0.504_Generic.ftf 2.1 firmware using X10FlashTool. Now I can’t turn on my phone anymore. First, it vibrated when I pressed the power button, but it remained turned off.
Sometimes when I plug it into my computer, if I let it long enough, it connects in flash menu and the LED turns green. I tried to install other firmware using SEUS but It sais I already have the latest software and I do not have a reinstall button.
I also flashed a X10i_2.1.A.435_GLOBAL-GGL GENERIC 1232-9897 2.1 firmware but I get the same results. Also, despite the fact that I let it charge over the night, when I press the power button, the LED indicates that there is no battery.
Did I bircked my phone? Can someone help me?

Use the repair option on SEUS, should guide you though it.
Found it, flashed it, now it works. Thank you a lot. I got a bit scared. The only thing is that I am stuck at 1.6. I have rooted it, installed the files from xRecovery, but when I want to enter the recovery menu, and press back, noting happens.
But this is another problem. Should I start another topic?
Anyway, thank you a lot. You saved me!

well you're back on 1.6 why not just update to 2.1 with seus or pc companion?
I think you did't install xrecovery the right way. Try it again or you could try and drop the xrecovery files in system/bin with root explorer
PC Companion and SEUS say that I have allready the latest software (wich I don't). As for xRecovery, I used the manual method with root explorer from the begining, because I couldn't install xRecovery as an app. I also tried to boot recovery with Quick Boot, but nothing. Any other ideas?

Ok try this: install root explorer, open root explorer and go to /system. Change R/O into R/W(the button in the right top corner) search for a file called build.prop and long press it untill a menu pops up. Select 'open in text editor'. Scroll down to:
ro.semc.version.cust=XXXX-XXXX
ro.product.name=x10_XXXX-XXXX
(the XXXX-XXXX resamble some numbers)
and change both the XXXX-XXXX into 1232-9897 press menu, save & exit.
Reboot the phone and start up pc companion. Choose in pc companion the update option and choose repair and follow the procedure.\
good luck

I tried it, but SEUS and PC Companion still say that I have the latest software. Last night I checked for an update from the phone menu, and I got an update to R2BA026, but still 1.6
Is there a way to flash a custom ROM without recovery menu? Any suggestions? Also, thank you very much for helping me. I had other Android phones and had no problems rooting them and installing custom ROMs, but this one is tricky. Thank you for the help! I really need it.

Strange, i've flashed my x10 several times with this routine. After changing the numers in the build.prop did you restart the phone before you repaired it with pc companion?
I forgot to say this: before you repair the phone with pc companion go to windows explorer and go to this location(make sure you can see hidden files & folders):
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sony Ericsson\Update Engine\
And delete the folder called db

PC Companion does not repair the phone. I go through the process, but somewere it gives me a Installation error saying ”unable to install or start phone software update components”.
In Build.prop I don't have ro.semc.version.cust and ro.product.name at all.
I only have ro.semc.version.fs that has the XXXX-XXXX number.
I don't have the db folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sony Ericsson\Update Engine\ although I can see hidden files. I deleted the db folder from Update Service, but SEUS still says that there is no software update for my phone. And I don't have a Repair option in SEUS. I will try installing an older version, maybe it will give me the option to Repair
So... other ways to flash a custom ROM? Or some other way to enter the recovery menu?

Ok, I did it and now PC companion says that I have a new software update. If I check from the phone menu, it also says that a 2.1 update is available and that I should install it from my PC.
When I click the update in PC companion and arrive at the second step, ”Prepare”, it is downloading something and then it says "Preparing your computer for software update" But it doesn't finish the step and it gives me a "Instalation error: unable to install or start phone software update components". Is this because of the phone or it has something to do with my laptop? I reinstalled PC companion, but I get the same thing.
I am begining to lose my fate and I can't stand the 1.6 timescaped system anymore. I want stock Froyo or Gingerbread (or at least official 2.1)

Or can you try it on a different computer?

Tried with SEUS, still says I already have the latest software, and it shows me no repair button (Deleted the db folder, although, when I start SEUS, db comes back as it was before. I deleted it after I started SEUS, but I can't delete 2 files, because they are being used by the program). I am using the version 2.11.1.9 and tried to install a earlier version, but even that installs this one.
Tried from another computer but same results.
Any other tricks? Maybe some that can help me install a custom ROM?
If your an at & t user this maybe of interest to you http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1012380 or perhaps just download the flashtool (follow a link in my sig) and a global generic 2.1 rom from xda and flash it with flashtool. Or just go nuts and install a custom rom which you can learn all about how to do from my guide when you have 2.1 running. Hopefully this will be of some use to you.

Ok, but what about this: "You need rooted 2.1 rom with xRecovery working to install this firmware! If you already flashed the latest firmware with SEUS, please downgrade OR root it using THIS thread." ??
And this: "3. Boot into xRecovery and install update.zip" ? I can't install xRecovery either. Tried also to reboot recovery from flashtool, but does not work. (I have done all the steps with manual instalation of xRecovery files)
I have 1.6, I flashed a 2.0.A.0.504_Generic.ftf before, but after doing so, my phone does not turn on. I will try your method and post the result. Hopefully it works.
