[Q] question about how vibrant GPS works - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I purchased a vibrant used from someone off craigslist to use on t-mobile. However, I do not have a 3G data plan as of this moment. My question is does the data connection factor into the calculation of your location? or is it entirely determined by the GPS signal?

Gps can be used standalone but you do need a network connection to use google maps

aGPS data downloads over the T-Mobile data network (won't over WiFi, same with other T-Mobile phones oddly).. so you will only get very slow standalone GPS.

However you (the OP) might try the app "GPS Status" -- in its tools menu there is an option to download a-gps data, maybe it can be done over wifi.

I seldom have my SIM in my Vibrant right now, and recently I've used the GPS some on wifi. I don't know whether it's cached from when I did have my SIM in it, but GPS Test *does* seem to be using AGPS data of some sort; when I start it up it shows a bunch of sats with 0 signal (which I assume is what AGPS would provide).

[Q] Gps and Wifi are not friends

Situation:
I have recently flashed the modaco r5 for hero 2.1. I noticed that my GPS was not working, but it has always been a bit iffy. Doing some research I read that I needed the Mobile Network (use phone for data connection when WIfi is unavailable) checked. Without turning on wifi, my GPS worked excellently, fixed to 8 satellites in a second.
Problem:
I turned on my wifi, but b/c of the Mobile Network option, I think it switches to Wifi as its primary data source and neglects the GPS. So the GPS does not work until I turned off the wifi.
Question:
I know people usually don't use GPS and Wifi together, but is there a way to get them both working together?
Thanks everyone and much appreciated!

GPS reception strength

Just wondering for current X10 owners. What kind of reception strength do you guys get using an app like GPS status when GPS is set to standalone without any AGPS assist at all.
my GPS is set to automatic, but I have disabled any network data, even when am not online through wi fi, GPS locks up pretty quick,I guess in about five seconds. though sometimes it takes a little more and rarely I have to restart the phone to get a fix

[Q] Location Services, Use cell but not Wifi

Location services has an option "Use Wireless Networks" where "Location determined by WiFi and/or mobile networks". I usually leave Wifi turned off unless I'm somewhere I know has good quality Wifi as my plan includes 3GB of data per month.
My problem is that if I am somewhere without GPS reception and an app calls for location the phone then turns on Wifi briefly to find a location. This of course disconnects my HSDPA+ session which interrupts internet and makes whatever app I just loaded either take forever to load as it then needs to find a new connection (via WiFi); or the app complains that there is no internet and it exits.
Not all apps do this (some are better behaved).
I need to leave the "Use Wireless Networks" option on so that if there is no GPS the cellular network can provide a rough location to the app.
Is there some way I can have the "Use Wireless Networks" use cellular for location but not use Wifi?
This thread had a similar problem but no resolution.

[Q] Issues Getting A GPS Lock When Roaming Internationally

I'm going to Vietnam shortly so want to make use of locally cached google maps downloads while I'm away. In the past (in Switzerland & Italy) I haven't been able to get a GPS lock whilst travelling out of the UK.
I'm pretty sure that GPS separate to data roaming so disabling the latter wouldn't affect the GPS lock?
My iPhone toting friend was able to use GPS on his phone while roaming data was disabled so I'm puzzled why mine doesn't work.
Any thoughts?
Its because its agps which is assisted so it uses the data to help find its location. It is annoying as its happened to me before. I just had to enable data quickly to get gps lock.

Use 4G and Wifi in the same time

Hello users,
I'm wondering if there is a way to use the 4G connection with the wifi in the same time ?
almost like what samsung do with the "booster" option so that the WIFI can get "help" by 4G speed.
Thanks in advance.
Actually the method samsung use is similar to wifi+ on huawei phones. It is not boosting but it switches between wifi and 4g connection depending on condition like connection status, internet availability and speed. As far as i know it prioritize wifi connection but there is a danger of eating up your mobile data quota if your wifi connection is not good.
I am sorry if you are refering to download booster on samsung device. That is a true dual connection. If i remember correctly you can use an app called speedify to get that option or something called super download booster which require root.
