[Q] Someone please help me. I'm lost. - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I've tried to do my own research and have come up with very little. It took me about a year to figure out what rooting actually meant and did. So I rooted my SGS vibrant and flashed a bionix rom (i think). It says "bionix shut down sequence initiated" or something like that when I turn it off (any ideas on what it is or how I can find out). I really have no idea what version it is. I also would like to put a new rom on my phone but am scared ill screw it up. I watched a youtube video that told me how to do it the first time I flashed anything. It works with a few random screw ups but KILLS my battery. I would really like for someone who knows more than me to explain what a nandroid backup is and how to do one. What the clockwork rom manager can help me do. What the one click lag fix did. Why my computer won't read the storage things on the phone when connected to the phone anymore. What is this odin thing. What is a kernel. will I still get the ota updates without the stock rom. Where did my stock rom go when I pushed backup before I flashed this rom in the rom manager app. Did I actually wipe all the original data from the phone. Why can't I restore boot animation with one click lag fix(it says somethings not found... Did I wipe/delete it?). What is an apk and sdk(or skd)? What is a voodoo lag fix. How many times can you flash beer something goes wrong. I'm really new to ALL of this and have had no help really when I've asked a lot of people who apparently know more than I. ANY help from ANYONE who knows ANYTHING would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Almost all of those questions can be answered by reading the Tips and Tricks or Noob Guide threads. Those two threads have given me all the info I've ever needed for the Vibrant.

Theres a lot of questions in there so I'll just bite off a few at first. Before that, have you taken a look at the vibrant bible thread in the dev forum? It covers a lot of the basic ' how tos '.
Firstly, you can possibly see what version of bionix you are running by looking under settings - about phone - build number. now might be a good time for you to odin back to stock and start fresh. Odin is a program that runs on your pc and can safely install a rom on top of any lag fix you may have enabled. You can read about using odin to go back to stock in the vibrant bible thread I mentioned earlier. Once you go back to stock you can receive ota updates from tmo if that's what you want or you can reroot and flash another custom rom. If you choose to flash another rom I would recommend reading every post on that rom's thread so you can learn from other's experiences. I would also recommend you keep reading the bible thread, theres a ton of good info there.
Good luck.

Dude, THAT is why I do those stickies, thank you! So glad it helped man!

That was really helpful, thank you and I will be looking into this more little by little. But I also have 2 very specific questions:
1. Is it possible to turn an htc windows phone into an android phone?
2. will I lose everything if I push the flash clockwork recovery in the rom manager app? I haven't done it yet but everything I've read has told me to do it the first time. I have the bionix rom running and don't remember flashing the clockwork recovery thing EVER. have I messed up or can I just do it whenever? And is it true thats how you make a nandroid backup because thats what I've read.
I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out, and being patient with me. You guys are the reason I love android. Thank you from your very lost, slowly learning, new friend.

Depends on the phone, many do have android roms available. Just look up whatever windows phone you have in the forum section and if there has been some android development there will most likely be a section in the thread devoted just to android development.

You need to odin back and start from new

What Now?

I have successfully rooted my phone and I am now wondering what I do next. I want some of that sweet Froyo goodness too. I however have no clue what the next step is after the root. I see kernels and clockwork and all sorts of crazy stuff. Any help is greatly associated. Thanks.

Do you understand how clockwork works? And also, do you have Titanium Backup (TiBu) installed?
Samsung Fascinate, Verizon
EB01 Superclean 2.4
Kenesis' TransMyst GBKB (EPIIIIIC)
Mob87's Honeycomb Theme
Stock Kernel
Read... "how to root/cwm/rom" it should be on the first page of the dev section, obviously of its not try the second page. In that how to it will tell you "what to do next..." read the instructions AND FOLLOW THEM. If you dont understand something, google or xda search what it is you arent getting.
Im sure if you took the time to read stickies and the how to's, you coooould have figured it out for yourself. **** try typing stuff into google even. If you dont wanna get burned by others on here for redundant posting, I suggest reading. Everything you could imagine has been posted about.

After rooting, the first thing you want to do is a full backup of your phone that way if something goes wrong you can flash back to your original setup.
In order to do this you must flash something called clockwork mod recovery which unlocks your NAND flash in your phone so you can perform this backup. Clockwork mod recovery replaces the stock Samsung recovery and adds more options such as flashing zips, making or restoring backups, and enabling the voodoo lagfix(don't worry about that right now). If you want to know what a recovery looks like turn off your phone and hold both the power button and the volume up and down buttons until the phone turns on. This will boot you into recovery and it should be the blue stock Samsung recovery. The objective of installing clockwork is to replace this recovery with something more functional.
To flash clockworkmod recovery the easiest way to do that is through a program called Odin v1.3. There are many threads in the general section describing how to flash files through Odin. In order to flash files in Odin you must put your phone in download mode by taking the battery out, and while holding the volume down key, plug in the USB from your computer (this is assuming you have all of the Samsung drivers installed). IF you do this you will see a large yellow triangle with an exclamation point, this is download mode.
I have to go to class now sorry I can't be more helpful. Happy flashing!!
First thing is get ROM Manger installed and Titanium Backup. If your rooted you should already have Super User installed. If not install it. From there I would do two complete backups from ROM Manager and then run Titanium Backup once. Backup your contact to your sd card also. Once you do that install clockwork via odin. Make sure you can get into clockwork and everyting is working. From there you need to pick your flavor of ROM and Theme if you want a new look. As for a ROM I would go with Superclean. It is high quality work and very stable.
Everyone agrees that backing up your stock system is the most important thing to start with. I would also read about everything you are going to be working with.
Hope this helps to get you started.

I think Im good with actually posting any questions I have in this forum. It just works better for me. If it actually bothers YOU, then maybe you should just not read the post...or better yet, don't comment. Just my 2 cents.
Yes, I do have Titanium Backup and Super User on my phone. I have no clue what clockwork is. I would like to thank everyone else for their responses. Cheers!

Xda encourages reading in an attempt of avoiding hiccups in the future. You are requesting answers without searching. Bc of this, you aren't learning anything outside the spectrum from what you request. Typically individuals who post threads without reading and searching first are those who end up damaging their phones. The more advanced users avoid these threads because of redundency, and as a result you will not get expert information. So when you do bork your phone, you will hold amatures accountable and expect those same individuals to fix your problems starting the whole process over again. Read first, ask questions later. This EXACT question was asked last week.
When I was a noob, I read everything. I lurked this forum for over a year prior to joining. I can promise you, your phone and your request are far from unique.

Samsung wants me to send them my Vibrant to "reflash" it. Can I do it myself?

Samsung wants me to send them my Vibrant to "reflash" it. Can I do it myself?
Hey all. I've been having a couple of problems with my Vibrant -
1. About once a day, when trying to play an MP3, the phone says that the audio files can't be played because they don't exist. Reseting the phone allows the audio files to be played again.
2. The wifi radio frequently will not turn on properly. When trying to turn it on in the wifi settings menu, the wifi will say "turning on...", and about 30 seconds later it will say "error". After a few tries, it will eventually work.
I called Samsung, and they want me to send it to them to "reflash" it. I'm wondering if this is something I can do myself. I've been reading about all of the flashing of roms you guys do here, but I've never done it. Would using Odin or whatever to reflash to stock be the same thing Samsung is going to do?
Thanks for bearing with a n00b!
Yes to all your questions.
You can do it yourself. It will be the EXACT same procedure Samsung will do (except here you have the option of using ROMs that are MUCH cooler).

Awesome! Thank you! Two quick questions-
1. What's the risk level to this? Would I be running the risk of creating a shiny paper weight if I start flashing?
2. What's your favorite ROM? Any recommendations?
Thanks again!
If you can read and follow simple directions then, it is a no-brainer. 1st read the noob bible it has all the instructions to flash anything you want. Go to Unlockr.com or Youtube type in: --Odin back to stock --- rooting a vibrant--- flashing a custom rom.
Simply put Odin is a program that allows you to restore the original 2.1 JFD rom (stock) from there you would Root the phone> then download Rom manager>download Titanium backup> then backup your phone using it> then download a custom rom and put on you internal sd card > then using Rom manager you would flash it
and you have flashed a custom rom. All this takes les than an hour (more like 30-40 min)
Hope that helps you understand more......cheers
I'm not sure if I should put this in another thread, but as I was following the steps, I hit a wall - Titanium backup is force closing when I'm trying to open it. It will show a message saying that it got root access, then immediately crash. Any troubleshooting hints?
Thanks!

NM - it's the new 3.7.6 version they released - it has known FC issues. I got the apk for 3.7.5 and it works like a dream. Thanks!
Just a thought could it be that you do not have busybox installed? Or perhaps the most recent busy box.
Thanks to your help and encouragement, I took the plunge and flashed a custom ROM! It may not sound like much to you guys, but it was big for me!
I chose trigger for my first try, and it's incredible so far! It's SO much better than what Samsung is putting out!
Thanks for you help everyone!
Trust us, the fun is just starting for you!! Once you flash, you can't stop!

And I think you chose the right ROM! Trigger is the shizznessttt!!! If you don't mind me suggesting though, make sure you charge your phone at 100% before flashing anything. It actually made a difference in my battery life, no bs. I guess there is a difference why the devs write and suggest you are fully charged and not just so it dont die midway through flashing procedures lol. Good luck fam.

New Dell Streak Mini 5 User With ?'s For ROM Help Install?

Which is the best rom to go with?
I've downloaded _n0p_'s DSC v0.7 and Tenorntex's Longhorn 2.1 v2, seeing as these 2 were the newest and latest and had Android 2.3.3
Are there any other better rom's or has anyone tried the 2 I listed, if so whats the difference?
Thanks
Better is very vague when it comes to ROM's it all depends on what you want in a Rom. I have old Simple Streak 1.2. Yes there is newer ROM's out but this one works perfect for what I need. In my Case Stability.
DSC is the most actively developed/supported. Plenty stable for me. I don't think any of the earlier Froyo based ROMs are being developed further.
I meant as far as Stability, Performance and up to date, I don't care about the Stage UI and was gunna theme it myself or use SPB Shell 3D.
Could someone point me in the direction to an easy install rom?
I don't wanna install "these update pkg's" after renaming and then plug my phone into the pc and open cmd and then type this in on the pc. et cetera et cetera
I just wanna download a zip drag it to the card, bootup in safemode and install from sd card.
I'd consider doing all that work if I weren't testing out the device.
I won it off ebay, the guy replaced the screen and said it's been randomly rebooting ever since. But he never did a factory reset or new rom install ever since fixing the screen, so I just wanna simply install a rom and see if it works then go on from there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately I do not believe that anyone can change the way that the Streak works just so it is more convenient for you or so that you don't have to learn anything.
In the time you took to navigate to XDA and make your post you could have flashed a ROM onto your Streak - plugging it in and everything.
The only ROM you can install by just putting it on the SD Card is the same one that is currently on the Streak, if you don't mind holding down a couple of buttons and using recovery mode.

If anyone is wondering why developers leave and give the site a bad reputation look no further. Someone with over 600 posts under his username should not be making noob posts like this one. With so many posts he knows how to use the search engine and the wiki, but I guess when it comes to our device using the search engine and the wiki is an inconvenience, along with renaming a file "update.pkg".

Some people learn better through interaction where they can actually ask questions... I don't have over 600 posts so who are you talking about? Furthermore if you are talking about first thing I'd do is learn how to read mr wise guy, secondly!! You tell me how one is supposed to learn which rom is the best based on user reviews and opinions, where do I go to find that out and wheres the wiki on that, unless you expect people to read 200 and 300 page threads also? I have barely 150 posts and rarely post at all unless it is to ask questions or make requests. It's not like I have 600 posts and every single one of them are questions.
This is only my second time dealing with android and second time flashing android first time it was simply moving a zip to the sdcard and booting up into safe mode and selecting update through sdcard, so certainly I'd be baffled and have questions when one time it was so easy and the second time I've gotta jump through hoops and everything.
Lastly since WHEN Is asking a Question SOOOO wrong in the Dell Streak 5 Q&A Category???? It's not like I posted it in the wrong area or something, but ohhh no'es how dare n00b be confused and need a lil help/guidance of some experienced users, ohh mercy me the drama in that!!
Last time I checked that is what XDA is here for, for people to learn, not to be attacked by asshat trolls like you.
If anyone is wondering why XDA has a multitude more lurkers than posters look no further than to the hardass that is Strephon Alkhalikoi View Postwho can't stand to see a n00b in need of help!

Flashing/Updating
Installing a recovery
Download appropriate recovery to flash from Stock Recoveries or Custom recoveries
Enter fastboot mode on your phone
Flash recovery with fastboot: fastboot flash recovery <path to recovery.img>
After flashing is complete: fastboot reboot to reboot
Finished
If you are using a custom recovery see Disabling recovery overwrite in stock roms and follow the steps there to prevent the Streak from over writing the recovery. Re-install your custom recovery after following those steps.

I hope that you can actually read better than that. The wiki does not say to stay away from fastboot. It clearly states two commands that should not be used on the Streak. It goes onto give a number of examples of using fastboot.
I hope that you other 157 posts (as I wtite this) on XDA were not as tiresome or ill-informed as the ones you have posted here.
The information you need is here in the forums, available at the links in my signature, and on other forums. Please exercise some patience and read the info.

First I'm gunna try factory reset and see if that fixes the random reboot problem, hopefully it does the seller said he just installed the new screen and never did anything except for just trying to powering it up, use normally and it would reboot suddenly.
WELL NO DUH, you need to restore everything back to default settings with a factory/hard reset. Thats like trying to install a video card or webcam and expecting it to work right away without installing the dirvers. - Hopefully!
Well it's only getting as far as the dell logo screen/splash screen. I've tried the entering safe mode but nothing yet, once it's powered on it just sits at that screen.
dsc is great and very stable if you dont mind the few following quirks.
1. google maps will always run in the background unless you freeze it. This will drain your battery quite quickly
2. Wifi might or might not be broken, if it is broken use wifi analyzer if not profit
the benefits of dsc?
fast
running GB instead of froyo
dpi change is awesome.
screen default orientation is awesome
stable other than those few bugs
Battery life was decent.
-------------
Im however just running 2.2 froyo on a stock rogers. The battery life is amazing on stock 2.2 (a whole day, and still have about 30% with heavy usage and constant 3g) and the wifi works fine. For me this is the most stable rom however it is a bit slow compared to DSC. This phone is used for work so it has to just.. work.
---------------
Havent really tried the other roms yet, but depending on what you want out of the phone you can try the DSC and see if you can live with these little quirks.
Yea I was leaning more towards DSC than Longhorn, it looks like it's updated more frequently too.
Bad & Good News
Turns out when the guy replaced the screen he fried the mobo... Me and a friend at a small local pc store tried everything from rooting with new rom to factory resets. Always had the same problem.
But the guy at the pc store sells phones also and said he'd give me $100.00 credit to a new factory refirbed, rooted and unlocked dell streak mini if I gave him the one we tried to repair.

[Q] What am i doing wrong?

OK First and foremost i would like to say Thank You XDA Developers, you have helped me figure out ALOT about my phone.
First lets just say I'm a noobie at this (aren't all beginners?) and i did try the search function but couldn't find anything . if someone does find, please link me too it, it will be greatly appreciated.
OK now back to the problem, the thing im trying to do is install a custom ROM onto my HTC Raider LTE from rogers, i have rooted/unlocked/ installed CWM recovery on it and my phone is S-ON. this is where things get difficult for me, i don't know where to go from here, i have already downloaded DarkRaider_v1.5.0 and virtuous_inquisition-v4.0.2 just to see which one is better but i do not know what to do with these files. i have booted from recovery and installed from zip but i guess that's not right cuz i tried it three time and had to re-install the stock rogers ROM 3 times due to it Boot looping. Thanks in advance and sorry for any annoyance i may have caused
You did a full wipe/factory reset before install the ROM?
Anyways, post this thread in the device's forum, where will help you much better.
Yea i did that and thanks i will move this thread

[Q] Was stuck at boot, rooted s Razr. Have recovered. Need original ICS rom/HELP

Here's the story.
Rooted Stock RAZR.
Changed Build Prop to Galaxy Nexus and google.
Overwrote system files with the huge GAPPS 4.2 pack, excepting the apps folder. (My biggest mistake)
Backed up my launcher, transferred 4.2 launcher to system/app.
Overwrote some app files, not all.
Downloaded a Safestrap, -I do not believe I properly set this up.
Downloaded Clockworkmod, told it I had setup a recovery, then created a backup of rom.
The phone rebooted. I assumed that meant the backup was successful.
Nothing happened. Like the genius I am, factory reset phone.
Phone successfully loaded, but I got stuck at the welcome screen.
Put myself into bootloader, hit recovery, I think I wiped the cache and then did another factory data reset.
Somehow got back to the main screen. Phone was working properly.
Went and installed some more apps, including velvet chrome gmail gms and others.
Downloaded boot something or other app (cant remember name) redownloaded clockworkmod and safestrap. (Still not set up properly, obviously.)
Rebooted.
Got stuck in boot for hours. Could not get recovery up
Finally got into recovery.
Phone still sitting here, I do not dare touch it.
Yes, I made every possible wrong choice I could have. I did not have any clue what I was doing and tampered with a phone I don't have the money to replace.
The question is, can you help me xda forums. My phone can safely boot I hope as it is now in recovery.
I need to get this safe again. I do have an original copy of.my old.build prop, but not one of the original system files/some apps.
I would also really like to turn my RAZR into a Nexus
Maybe just the homescreen.
Going to my buddies house tonight. He has a computer I can use.

To restore your phone you need to SBF (Check out this guide if you are unfamiliar with how to use SBF forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23453478) back to stock using the SBF 4.04 ICS build 6.7.2-180 which can be found here from http://www.droid-life.com/2012/07/1...azr-ice-cream-sandwich-4-0-4-build-6-7-2-180/. Next take a look at this guide forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840296 particulary the sections on root and recovery. These sections will explain how to root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710871) the ICS build you installed and how to use recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720351) and the latest version of ICS safestrap (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391900) for the Droid Razr.
Unfortunately you can't turn your Droid Razr into a Nexus. However if you want to make the homescreen look like a Nexus I would recommend installing Apex Launcher (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...-IHIDw&usg=AFQjCNEjKp_sMjweNbIvuXE_fTXHQj4-Gg) along with the AOSP Jelly Bean icon theme for Apex launcher either this one http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...24CgDA&usg=AFQjCNEt0DOlpK-8ubEx4QCLgcD4g8cj4w or this one http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...24CgDA&usg=AFQjCNHrWglN-UU1hQBxmGgFbEzN76pDhw.
Let me know if you still have questions .

My only question is if I can accomplish all of this with my phone and a ******* MAC.
Thank you so much. I literally have asked around the web for hours with little to no help of any kind, and have been unable to come across resources on my own. I had completely forgotten about SBFing. That will be my savior. Not only that, but you have provided the links I have so. Needed. I am going to boot up my phone now, leave it on the charger, and go to sleep now...I hope it's there when I wake up.
also, someone recommended I flash Cyanogenmod. I found these two resources on my own:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/htc-rezound-roms/224442-rom-cyanogen-mod-9-cdma.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751826
and this is where I messed everything up from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1966302
I'm wondering, are my system files still ok after overwriting? Could the problem only be based on the changes to the build prop or something similar, so that I don't have to destroy my phone further?

About to read through the articles. My battery is dead. I've looked through advice including hotwiring the charger to the battery but...Razr batterys can't be removed without voiding warranty.

It is possible that the build.prop edits you made caused your problems, but I would still recommend SBF'ing back to stock so you have a clean slate to start with. Also don't install anything else that could make things worse, until you are back to stock like I suggested. While you can use a MAC to flash SBF's its a lot easier and more reliable to use a computer running Windows.

Did you try plugging your phone into your charger and leaving it plugged in for a little while to let it charge? Also try plugging the phone into your computer and having it charge off of one of the USB ports.

Ok. Thank you. You have no idea how much less stressed I am about this. I have been trying to let it charge. I don't have a standard charger, I use a broken lapdock, which does charges the same exact way. Will charging with a computer give me different results? (This is not a priority question, I don't NEED you to answer it asap or anything.) Please stick around if I encounter more issues. It's nice to receive help rather than being flamed for being a noob. I had to get started somewhere. With yours and others help, I have gained many resources for flashing/rooting. I am still going to avoid trying to SBF if I can(Though I believe it is the avenue I'm taking, the only way I wouldn't is if I can safely recover and fixing build prop fixes my issues), as I REALLY don't want to lose root, as I had someone else root for me in the first place. I really need a god damn pc. Thanks again.

If your lapdock is broken then it may not allow your phone to charge correctly, I would recommend trying to charge it through your computer's USB ports as it will probably make a difference. And don't worry about asking questions heck we all start out knowing nothing and needing to ask questions, and what's good is your exploring and asking good questions not just demanding people do things for you. I understand SBF'ing back to stock may seem scary but as long as you follow the directions properly you'll be fine. Also by going to back to stock it will give you a clean build.prop free of any changes you made. For future reference always make a nandroid before making any build.prop changes no matter how small it may seem. As always I'm happy to help out and will be around for any questions you may have .
