where can I learn to do these simple mods? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First, I just flashed Nero v1, coming from Onyx R4.2
R4.2 had a numeric battery percentage in the status bar, which was great, but this was removed in Nero.
It doesn't seem like such a major issue but I want it back. Is there a way I can modify some source code on my ROM somewhere to recreate this functionality?
Second, there appears to be a problem with Nero (and all other Vibrant ROM's I've used so far). The screen unlock sound does not play unless "audible selection" is enabled in sound settings. I would like for the unlock sound to play regardless of audible selection. So is thee a place in the code I can look at to fix this?

bump since I want to learn how to accomplish this and stackoverflow isn't giving me any answers either. Are there any resources I can use to look up this sort of development information?

idk about editing code but there's a market app called battery statusbar something like that it makes a percent on the left side.

Well i believe to do that you have yo modufy the framework, that's why there are specific battery mods for specific roms.
You may want to take some programming classes (Java) before trying it

That is a widget and it is something different

Right, I know some ROM's have the numeric battery which replaces the original battery icon. Purchasing another widget would mean clogging up the notification bar with another icon.
I've already been programming in Java for various projects

that actually doesn't address any of them. all the icons and status icons are not sharp on this build, and the statusbar fix doesn't change that.
I can try my best and once i've read up on how to change them, I'll start working on it soon, but I have to say that I feel a lot of people are more worried about the other stuff like front-facing camera and the fingerprint scanner, and so stuff like this isn't really bothering them. any icons you wanna request first?
oh, and I can't guarantee that i'll be working on it when the official GB comes out (so excited!! =D) but i'll work as fast as i can and if anything, try to get at least some of the stock icons a bit better. =]
~jojojohnson7410~
-EDIT- after about a 2 second research on google and from some past knowledge, it seems ADW Launcher seems to be the way to go. Any other launcher?
I'll keep researching and working to get the ones for stock launcher if i can.
-EDIT2- found it. lol that didn't take long. Okay, the good thing is that it looks to be a simple edit to the apks, which shouldn't be too bad. the bad news? Don't know how great I am with Photoshop (been a while). Will try to brush up if anything, and then get to it =] Sorry if this takes me forever cause this will be my first mod.

Ok, maybe I am missing something here......but the status icons are in the status bar fix, right? That fix replaced the status icon which is what the OP complained about. As far as the app comment, what apps? Mine look fine so I don't know what he is talking about. Not being sarcastic here.....I just do not see the same issue.

wait....question before i do start on this little project. The answer to this question will determine if i go for a theme here (if i have time >.< time seems so fleeting nowadays) or if i take this up as a legit project.
Did you change the default ppi settings in the build.prop?
I'm sorry if its a stupid question, but I just wanted to clarify. If you don't know what I'm talking about, its the section where they allow you to change the density of your screen. Apparently, GB has it set to 240 ppi when our screens are 275 ppi and I do remember vaguely having this problem. As i thought more and more about your request, it seems this is more an issue of your screen clarity as oppose to the icon clarity, as the icons can only go max 48x48 pixels for apps (as i believe) and all of the icons, at least from stock at the very least, should be at max.
So, if you didn't yet, try editing the build.prop and changing the 240 to 275. Suggest you use Root Explorer =] and if you still feel its not that clear, reply back or pm me and i'll see what I can do to fix it.
~jojojojohnson7410
he's talking about the icons and app icons. if you look at all of them, they appear to have been scaled-up images of smaller icons and so they have a slight amount of blur/aliasing in them and they are not 100% "sharp" images with corners and such as you saw in the stock builds. this is partially why the LCD density and such is off on the stock moto launcher.
I am using go launcher and am not having any issues with the app icons, and the link above fixes the connection icons.

Thinking of making rom. Ideas wanted

Thinking of making a rom. Based on cm7. (NO BLUR CRAP!) I like features of a lot of roms but HATE all the god awful theme crap people put on everything like these battery circles and all the ****ty looking mish mash of crap. I want my phone to look Android. Not like a ricer Honda.
So:
What features would you like to see in a rom?
What are you favorite features that you commonly use but don't see in a rom that looks good?
Keep in mind this will most likely be cm7 based with a lot if extras....
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I love cm7 beta but here's what I'd like to see changed:
1. Push button to answer phone instead of swipe to unlock, or at least a settings to choose either.
2. a better 1% batter indicator, as of now, cm7 has the number next to a small green bar, I'd like to see the number inside a battery icon.
3. email client is weak, especially direct dial from email. Currently can't direct dial number included in header. This sucks for business users
4. a cleaner sms user interface. why do I have the droidbot in every text I send, would like to see it streamlined.
5. Vlingo assistant is years ahead of google voice search and should be used as the default voice search.
6. Keep Theme Chooser and all mods under Cyanogen Settings.
Thats all I can think of now but will add more later if I think of any.

I like:
The lower auto screen brightness tweak that was added into Homebase.
End call widget on homescreen or hold down a capacitive button at the bottom.
I like the toggles in the status bar for wifi and stuff but wish the status bar was about and inch with toggles and maybe end call toggle visible instead of having to slide it down.
Tap to unlock or tap to answer.
Disable data/wifi option on screen off.

Willing to Pay :)

Ok, I am done pulling my hair out so maybe I can pay someone else to do this for me lol.
I want a Transparent Status Bar exlcluding the Clock / Battery .. All I want is Notificatons on left hand side and Signal/Wifi on the right hand side.
I have been trying to change framework to make it work but however all I can manage to do is either make it completely dissapear or change the color. I thought that I could atleast hide the notifications by making the battery and clock display transparent but when I do that it off centers the wifi/signal bars and just doesn't look right.
I however have not been succesfull at making the Bar itself transparent.
So, to sum it up. I will pay for someone to do this for me or willing to accept any and all pointers on how to accomplish this myself.
Systemui controls expanded status bar and everything except the battery. In systemui goto res/layout/ you can set dip of items to say 0.9999999 to hide it. Also colors.xml in res/values/
Running ICScrewD ROM
So you want a transparent status bar with only notifications and wifi/signal without the clock on the right?
How much $$$?
u in the right forum bro?
@Thegodfather
Yeah, I would think this is the right forum as its a Theme request.
@Ssconceptz
Yes, transparent Notification Bar with just the notifications on the left and Wifi/Signal Icons on the right. No battery Icon or Clock.

Ill look into it but I heard the transparent bar doesnt work on the home screen of TouchWiz so this may be your issue. I am looking to remove the AM/PM as in ICS so I can probably test this too.

The OP's sig says skyrocket, I believe that is what he is referring to. If you figure out the AM/PM thing that'd be awesome! I've been trying but no dice at the moment, it seems the usual files that are changed have been moved...
@ Thegodfather
Sorry bout my signature. I did have the Skyrocket for a few days but took it back due to it being a major annoyance. The new APN's they use for the LTE Data plan is stupid and gave me more data issues then I care to touch on.
Will update as soon as I get out of this reply
@ Ssconceptz
I don't use TWiz currently do to this issue haha. I am using ADWEx because I can totaly hide the Status Bar but I don't care for doing that tbh. I played with Launcher 7 and its statusbar replacement but couldnt get it to work right after pulling things apart so trashed that project. I dug into some MIUI Framework but I can't even start to compare what they changed.
Is there a way to replace the StatusBar.apk from system with a customized version without it breaking somehting else.
Edit: Signature Changed

Maybe take a look at

Just what a quick google search brought up
The problem with WP7 bar is it is just overlay and doesnt actually replace the stock status bar and it actually uses a bit of battery. This is the reason I want the stock status bar modified.

If I were you...I would flash MIUI, then d/l extended mod settings, flash it and you can swich the statusbar layout and it will be transparent....if your sold on having touchwiz i dont think it is going to happen for u. Everytime i tried i could never get it transparent. So im on miui....plenty of great themes too.

I don't like MIUI. I don't know what it is I end up doing but I always have terrible battery life and it just seems buggy.

Yeah, I am comparing the i9100 statusbar.apk for the change to the i777 version we have. I am sure I will find it eventually but was hoping someone with some in-depth theming experience would know the answer lol.

1% Battery Mod Alternatives

People are always posting in the ROM threads wondering if a 1% battery mod is possible. I, personally, dont understand why it seems to be harder to accomplish on ICS and JB than Gingerbread. But I have come across some alternatives for those who need 1% increments.
First, there is Minimalistic Text. This allows you to put a widget on your home screen showing 1% increments of the battery. Just create a battery level widget and you're done. (see attached screenshot)
Second, there is a newer app called Battery Widget Reborn Beta. Along with adding a widget to your home screen, this app will allow you to have a constant, customizable notification (see attached screenshot). What is interesting about this app is that it has a "motorola 1% hack" in the settings that makes this possible for us. Which leads me to a question/theory.
If this app is using a 1% hack specified for motorola devices, is it possible for some smart dev to look at how this app is doing this and maybe make a mod based on it to give us a built in 1% hack? Just thought I would bring that up. Other than than that, the other two apps are working great for me.
You're right on with the Minimalistic Text. I used it and it works just fine.

I actually just started using the Battery Widget Reborn and find it really cool. I removed my Minimalistic Text widget and I'm going to try this one out for a bit. I also just removed the battery icon all together since this puts a notification in the status bar.
Awesome. Thanks for this.
The app Battery Indicator uses a Motorola hack to get 1% battery increments working, but it doesn't override the Android battery icon.
Been using it for a while and I don't mind the extra notification, so some people might like it.

That app seems to be similar to Battery Widget Reborn. I think its weird these apps use a "Motorola Hack." Whats with Motorola that doesnt allow 1% increments. And why is it so hard to get this built in?

Anyone know of a battery indicator bar like this?

Back in the past on my Windows Mobile HTC Touch Pro, i had a battery indicator called VistaHide Battery Gauge v1.1.1 that looked like the photo I've attached.
I am wondering if anyone knows of a colored one for Android like it. I seen a screenshot somewhere (don't remember what forum) where someone was showing something on a screenshot and they had this bar. I messaged them but never received a reply to email and no longer know where I seen it. If anyone knows of one, it'd be greatly appreciated.
Some roms include the "miui battery bar" like viper Rom or miui (if you're into aosp roms). But there are apps like charge bar in the market that do it. Charge bar puts ads in your notifications though. T.E.A.M battery bar is nice too with no ads. They are restricted to one color at a time but you can change the color at certain percentages, I.e. less than 30% will be red, etc.

Yeah, I'd seen quite a few of them like that, but the screenshot I'd seen one guy post actually had the multi colors like the attached image. I don't know how he did it, and can't find the post I originally seen it on to try and contact him again. I guess I'll have to do without, but thanks though.

Hey ProtoProtoss, did you ever find this???
I would love to find the equivalent on Android as it is the most practical approach I have seen to battery level indication. I don't know why there are so many apps consuming valuable screen real estate and resources just to show a system statistic. The VistaHide model was beautiful by its use of the gradient coloring and idea of only consuming a few pixels. I am going to try the Battery Bar by TEAM, but it seems they don't know about or can't do the gradient.

I tried the T.E.A.M. Battery Bar and it is close to the VistaHide functionality. I got in touch with the developer who advises that color gradient is in the dev pipeline. So there is hope yet for a VistaHide reincarnation
(now if we can only figure out how to remove the stock battery icon from the status bar)
Mine is fine...
