touch screen not working - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i dropped my x10 in the bath, got it out quick took battery out, let it dry for a bit, eventually everything but the touch element of the screen works, can anyone who knows advise me on whether its just patience required or that its buggered. thanks

if you can, pull it apart and leave it for 2 days or so and it might survive.
if you cant open it, just turn if upside down and stick it in the sun or a heater or something
ive revived many phones doing that do it quick so water doesnt corrode anything to quickly

thanks, also im getting messages through on the phone but the best i get is the quick preview in the status bar, on nokias you could read messages in the pc suite but that doesnt seem to be available with sony, any 3rd party that could do that?

i havn't heard of any apps that do that sorry mate
quickly stick that phone in front of something hot so it gets the water out fast, or stuff will start to corrode over time

With MyPhoneExplorer you can read your messages on the PC.

grr, wont recognise it, either need usb debugging turned on or transfer mode which i cant get because no touch screen, any other ideas anyone to see these messages?

maybe its a little bit to late for that now, but dip the phone in a bowle of rice! and leave it there for a couple of days....the rice will absorb all the water and maybe you'll be able to save your phone

and turn it off! you dont want water getting any further into the phone before it dries out!!!

Water damaged Eris-android question not about fixing water issue

Ok so I dropped my Eris water the other day and it turns on but the touch screen stopped working. Thats fine, I just went back to my blackberry but is there a way to get info off of the phone. Since my touch screen does not work I can not get into the phone but I have numbers that were not saved, text messages, and other info on the phone that I need the touch screen to access. Is there any way to check my messages from the pc for android or recover them. Thanks

if its water dont give up it will come back leave it in a bag of rice to draw out the water
If you turned it on it's probably too late and is broken... if you really are optimistic try the rice but that only really works if the phone doesn't turn back on.
i have heard stories of these going into the wash cycle and coming back after a few days
rice doesnt actually work any better then just sitting your phone on a counter, dried corn actually does absorb humidity out of the air (alton brown actually went into a 10 minute long scientific rant on why this is)
have you tried the master application? i haven't myself, but i bet there are ways to pull data off using it.

Both dry rice AND dry corn do indeed pull moisture out of the air for sure.
It's just that most people have dried rice around their house, and most people do NOT have dried corn around their house.
I have had great experience with rice, and poor experience with the 'counter'. I definitely spilled coffee on my Eris last week (a lot), then pulled battery, rinsed it off with REGULAR water (because I didn't want the coffee to dry on there and ruin things), then wiped it quickly, shook it, and threw it in rice for a few hours. It has run 100% since.
I don't feel like leaving it on the counter would have brought that much success.
http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/20/how-to-clean-up-water-damaged-electronics-the-rice-bowl/
Neither here nor there, I suspect that uncooked rice is a better choice than 'out in the open'.
The most important thing with any wet electronics is probably NOT TO TURN IT ON while it's still wet. Wait at least 24 hours, either in rice, near a stove top, dried corn, or whatever you're going to use.
But DONT' turn it on. That won't make ANYthing better.
Good luck
LOL, you specificically indicated that your question was not about fixing water damage in the title of your post, and you got 5 replies about how to fix water damage.
If your phone was rooted, the easiest way to do what you are asking would be to find another rooted phone, and manually make a nandroid backup via adb, take the SD card out of your phone, put it in the other root phone, and restore that backup to that phone. This would only work if you had USB debugging turned on before the phone got wet.
If your phone was rooted, but you couldn't find another rooted phone to help you out, what you are asking is technically feasible, but far, far more time consuming: reverse engineer the data files for the apps in question. That sounds daunting, but is probably not as bad as it seems, as many of the phone apps use "sql_lite" databases, and text within the database files can be seen using a hex editor or the Unix command "strings"
If your phone is not rooted, I think you are SOL.

Thanks for all your help guys. I turned my phone on because I didnt know not to turn it on LOL but I know now. I hope it will turn back on but thanks for your help guys about the data.
Google contacts (not the phone type) automagically upload to Google. And most data other than that should be saved on the SD card anyway.
If you used Google contacts and not phone contacts, login to gmail and goto contacts. They should be in there.
Can't you navigate with the trackball?

need your opinion on what my problem is.

ok so i have a tmobile tp2 and been having it since the first week it was released.
for the pass couple of days the call, home, and back buttons wont function like they need to.
also when i slide my keyboard up the screen goes completely black even when i close my keyboard, the only way to fix it somewhat is to keep pushing the sleep/wake button untill it turns back on.
my guess is that maybe something like a cable became loose and is causing it to have these problems, and i just wanted to hear what you guys have to say about it, or what you think the problem is and what you would recommend to fix it because i cant afford to buy a new phone for quite awhile.
Posting in the Accessories forum might not be your best shot at an answer.

Sounds like an app running to me. Even File Explorer (when searching the Windows folder) can cause my phone to hang for a long time. I would check in task manager to see if something is running. You can also try and app called "Clean Ram", it works great. The other option is a hard reset, to ruke out software issues. It could be harware, but I doubt it.

Very true.
It's likely a loose cable as you presumed. Hopefully you still have time left on your warranty.
I hate to be the oen to say it, but it sounds like your ribbon cable is going.... My son had the same thing happen on his Kaiser/Tilt (Grandpa to this Phone)... It started like you said... then got worse over the matter of a few weeks... His screen woudl only work when it was closed... the buttongs on the screen housign stopped working properly... then his memorycard reader (it was in teh screen part on that phone) went nuts... got to the point where that phoen was basically useless... I hope that isn;t your problem, but it sounds like it..

yeah i can pretty much say that it is the cable since i could still slide my keyboard but the screen just looks fuzzy like and when i close it, it takes time to adjust back to normal. so basically now its just an all touch screen phone to me now... sort of sucks since i miss using the keyboard so much.
and yeah the buttons got worst now to a point where none of them worked but somehow the back button started working again so thats the only button that does work now.
and a new problem started occuring in the last few days, the screen would turn on by itself with even a slight bump around where the battery is located, it really sucks for me cause it kills my battery faster and it just starts opening up random apps while its in my pocket.
I would like to hear what finally happened. People don't forget we are using WM phones. So no matter what the problem, hard reset before deciding!

wow super late response to this.
but my final verdict is that it was the flex ribbon cable that is the issue.
my TP2 doesnt even show anything no more, its still functional but you just cant see whats goin on with the screen because its like its turned off.
it stopped working on me on dec 25,2010 (what a great present from the phone, huh?) to how i described it.
so now im using my sisters old HTC dream, but even this one is starting to have an issue with the ribbon cable too! i just get bad luck with these phones now i guess.
edit: oh yeah i still have my Rhod210 just sitting on my desk till i get it fixed... oh how i miss my TP2!
Another late response then
Fixed it yet, have you?
this occasionally happens to my phone too, that it, the screen blanks out sometimes. the cause in my case is pocket lint. since it's hayfever season, i carry tissues in my pocket which kind of disintegrate to confetti after a while. while my tp2 is in my pocket, these tissue particles tend to get in behind the ribbon cable and cause some kind of blockage. by just blowing in around the ribbon cable area, it tends to clear out those fluffy bits and the screen is working again. so don't carry tissues in your pocket with your tp2

i actually took the time to open up the touch pro2 all the way today for a full diagnosis on it, and i was right. it was the cable. where the cable is exposed when it tilts, it looks like it sort of got stripped around that area. im not sure how but it left part of the cable exposed which im guessing is whats causing it to have the issue. i was taking a couple of pictures as i was disassembling it, but i forgot to take a picture of the cable itself to show you what i mean. maybe ill disassemble it again tomorrow so i can take a pic! =)
but yeah im still using the g1, and i finally fixed it! (ended up bricking a g1 so i used the other as replacement parts on it) but hopefully not for long cause graduation is tomorrow for me, and i MIGHT end up getting a new HTC phone as a graduation present from the family. so i hope that does happen!
ok so i reopened the touch pro 2 and took a pic of the cable to show you what i ment.

[Q] Phone's dead. I think.

Hey guys,
This is my first post over here (though I am a long time XDA reader). What pushed me to register is what happened to my phone today.
-I've got the SII i9100, Dorimanx Kernel, Revolt ROM.
-Updated this morning from Revolt 4.2 to Revolt 4.3 no problem.
-Also today my phone dropped into a river and was in the water for a whole second before I picked it up.
I picked it apart (Battery, SIM card, Memory card and) and because I had no other means of drying it, I just put it in my bag wrapped in a towel. Around 20 minutes later I reassembled it to see if it at least turns on. It stuck on the boot screen (NOT boot animation, I am talking about the yellow warning sign). Removed the battery and tried again - and the phone turned on regularly. I turned it off again to let it dry completely.
From then on, no matter what I do, the phone doesn't turn on, tried recovery mode, download mode, soft boot, charging with or without the battery, connected to the computer with two different cables, switching batteries. There is no reaction, and the screen never turns on.
One thing the phone does react to, and this is my last hope that the phone is not dead - whenever I put the battery back in and try to turn it on/charge - there is no sign of life, until I press any of the physical buttons on the device (touch the buttons around the home button), the buttons next to the home button will light up for a few seconds and then fade off.
I would normally just take the phone back to the store and fix it, but I REALLY need my text messages and WhatsApp history that are on the internal storage - I have messages there that go three years back!
Thanks to everyone who is willing to give it a thought. Any help is greatly appreciated.
99% alcochol, sink it for an hour.
Before you do that, try with another battery.
Never try to turn a device on after contact with water, you need to rice it up for a couple of days.

How much time do I have to do this? It's a holiday in my country today, won't be able to get it at least until thursday.
Right now the phone is in a bowl of rice as suggested somewhere around here.
Alright, that's what I meant by "rice it up".
Now, 99% alcohol removes all the river dirt, you can get it in a drug store easily. I'm sure there's one open where you live, people may need sh!t even on holidays.

They probably do have one open, but I just googled it. I won't find it there, local FDA limits alcohol sales to 70% and less Will have to look in a chemicals supply store on thursday when they open.
Thanks again for your help. Other than the two things you mentioned above - is there anything else I can do?
*Just out of pure curiosity, does the fact that the buttons next to the home button light up have anything to do with the solution? Does this usually happen?
It's about shorts and corrosion, dont turn on the device just yet. And get that 99% alcohol; ask around, who knows:
"hey, how you doin'? Family alright? Good. Listen, do you have 99% alcohol by any chance?"

[Q] Really love the z2, BUT...........

I will have to trade it in if i cant find a solution for my issue
Basically i have only 2 issues with my phone
1) I keep my phone in my back pocket generally, but quite often when i pull it out of my pocket, the little door for the sim card/charger has popped open........ altho it makes me a bit scared to submerge it, i can live with this
2) This is the dealbreaker, if i cant solve this the z2 will be getting sold and something else will take its place. Again this only occurs in my pocket, but every single time i pull phone out, its changed the homescreen...... widgets either get added toor removed from homescreen, apps open and run, music player starts and stops by itself, notification bar quick settings icons get added or removed, flight mode gets activated, silent activated etc
I believe this is caused ny the screen reacting to metals, wood and lead, is therea way to turn this feature off so it will only work with my finger touching the screen?
As i said, its a fantastic phone and id like to keep it, but as long as it gonna keep doing these random things in my pocket then its just not worth keeping
You could see if 'Glove mode' is selected in Settings > Display. If it is, turn it off.

Your flap is defective. Same thing happened to me. I've bought a new flap (for about 10€) and now it's fine.
Then, don't open your flap too often, prefer wireless file transfer and charging via magnetic port.

The screen will still respond to metal objects and pencil lead etc, but it should be activated by your backside through your jeans anymore.
Crap..... glove mode is not switched on........ guess it gotta go up for sale then. Will be sad to see it go tho, n yeah already got magnetic charger n wireless connect.... ive only actually opened that door twice lol
Or another possibility, as im rooted, is there something i could remove/freezethat will stop the screen responding to other materials????
Not to my knowledge. It's strange, I often carry mine in my back pocket (screen facing inwards) and have never had the screen turn on. I can't say the same for my G3 which often turns the screen on.
Since it is isolated case and no one else expierenced this as far as i can tell its user error, you got dodgy apps or there is something wrong with the way you handle the phone.

possibly but i wouldnt have thought so..... i dont treat this phone any differently to any other phone ive owned (well.... actually i havent thrown the z2 across the room...... yet, lol) and as far as apps go, i only actually have 5 or 6 downloaded apps installed, all of which i have used without issue on previous phones, and deleted around half of the useless (to me) pre loaded system apps, and its been doing it since i had it, well since a few days after i got it, but the first few days were a weekend and i wasnt at work just chilling at home so phone didnt really go in pocket

Actually yesi do have that switched on..... even if that the cause tho, my work trousers arent made of wood, metal or lead so screen shouldnt be responding to my backside. I will turn it off n see how it goes tho, it might be the cause but then again you gotta be quite precise for that double tap t work anyway and my backside is tiny lol so maybe not........ great suggestion tho

Steve
I have knock on turned off - otherwise when walking with the phone in my pocket listening to the FM radio, I end up sending several texts and emails....
Update: It appears it was actually the 'tap to wake' causing the issue..... i turned it off and went to work friday night and when i got home saturday morning phone was exactly how it should have been, no open apps, no options changed, no icons removed. Nice feature but think ill leave it off forever lol

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-i9300T water damaged

Hi everyone, my S3 decided it liked swimming yesterday and fell into a toilet and stopped working. As soon as I got it out, I took the battery out, wrapped it in toilet paper, and left it in the sun for 12 hours. Now, its being detected by my computer, and charges, but the screen stays blank. Is there any way without opening up the phone, as it is still under warranty, that I can fix the screen problem. It was running rooted Samsung 4.3 stock rom and was working fine till it had a swim.
Thanks in advance,

Im afraid leaving it in the sun would of done more harm than that. This keeps the water inside then allows it to evaporate into even smaller gaps then condense back into water when it can't get out. The "correct" i suppose way of doing it is by pulling it apart a much as you can and putting it in rice etc.
Im don't think there is a way to bring the screen back at this point.

So if I clean up the connector inside the phone, it will do nothing? as everything else works, as confirmed through a ADB screenviewer on my PC (litecam Android)

There is defiantly no harm in trying.
Ok, now i'm worried.
I opened my phone up to clean up all the connectors, and now the phone does not even turn on, it just vibrates for a second when plugged in and repeats it every two seconds. Is there any way to fix this? I don't want to have to get a replacement as all my data is on this phone, as before, it was turning on.
