The H and 3G are different date speed's.
All dependents from your operator, and the arise where you are.
The only way I get H is root my HD2 to android. If I'm with winmo I'm alway on 3G. This t-mobile btw.
i always get H on my hd2.

It also depends on the ROM's taskbar's icon pack. If the taskbar doesn't have "H", the user will never see "H".
go to settings/menu/all settings/ advanced connection/ enable hsdpa/hspa, if disabled
In case it's not obvious already H = HSDPA and is a faster transfer rate than 3G.
I find that as I go into a lower signal area I drop down to 3G then 'E' for edge and then to 'G' for two cups and a piece of string.
u get the H only when u got an active inet connection wich u are using RIGHT NOW. as soon as ur connection goes idle it switches back to 3G. this saves battery and doesnt stress ur provider
so if u are using a browser like opera wich is fullscreen, u will rarely see the H cause its only there when u are using the connection
EDIT: atleast its like that for me
I get H when i boot Android and then reboot it to Wimo.. but when i reboot the wimo, then it gets back to 3g..

I'm getting H icon on my tytn now when I'm online. I was not aware that At&t had HSDPA rolled out. Anybody else had this happened to them?? First time that I see H icon in usa. I love it, also if some of you guys do know about At&t runing HSDPA what are the speeds that you are getting??
Thanks
Man if you dont know at-t has 3g something is up with you.. they bought cingular think about it. do a speed test and see what speeds you get... it should switch back and forth from 3g to H

I know they do, I never got H icon before, I always had 3G, I just wanted to know if anybody else had H icon cause when I'm online on the phone H icon is always on. Once when I'm online it never goes back to 3G just stays at H.
The newer radios don't use HSDPA until needed, so the connection sits at 3G until the device downloads something, and then it switches to HSDPA, thus why you see the 'H'...

Early Radio versions didn't have HSDPA enabled in them, the later radios (all those with a protocol version ending with 'H') have HSDPA enabled on them.
HSDPA rocks.
So could this be the reason why I get an E (edge) instead of a G, I just upgraded to black. When i soft reset the phone, the shows up for a minute then goes to e. It never done that before i upgraded... I also have cingular.
well E = EDGE which is a little faster than straight up G = Gprs so thats a good thing they might have upgraded the towers in your area or something since Black is a OS.nb only install and doesn't have a Radio.nb in the package... OR it could be that your older rom didnt have the proper icon base inside of it and only supported the G icon

Can u tell me if the 'H' is indeed faster than '3G'? cause me too is seeing the 'h' icon for the first time on my cingular network... but it doesn't stay.

what do you think? do you think HSDPA is faster than 3G? have you done any looking into this to see what type of speed you could get? did you look at the cingular website?
hi!
i am using a tmous hd2 with the stock 2.13 rom and the recently released 2.15 radio. up till now i havent really bothered using packet data on my phone because i am a wifi guy... only recently did i start using packet data frequently...
i noticed two things out of place:
1) for some reason i have never seen hspa service on my phone. my operator runs a 3.6mbps dl 2mbps ul hspa services. whenever i switch to 3g and connect data, i always get a 3G written over the signal bars. and i have never seen speeds over 42kB/s (~384kbps) in several months of use. i have full signal strength in both 3g and 2g. if i am running 2g, then i get an E as expected over the signal bars. i have put in all the access point settings as defined by my operator (which are common for both 2g and 3g). i have enabled hsdpa/hsupa from winmo settings->connections->advanced n/w. is something amiss with the hspa settings on the phone? i really want to confirm that i have my phone set up right before i muster the courage to call up customer care.
(for someone from bombay, india, i am running mtnl 3g prepaid with following settings:- ap:gprsppsmum u:mtnl pass:mtnl123. this in itself is quite baffling because mtnl delhi has separate aps for 2g and 3g whereas the bombay network has the same ap for both. ap=access point)
2) i have never seen the H/3G/E/G icons on my taskbar. i mean the ones that are NEXT TO the signal strength icons. the space between the headset and the signal strength is always empty. isnt that particular icon supposed to show 'availibility' of the respective type of data connection? i read somewhere a long time ago that the icons are ROM dependent. but i am pretty sure i have seen snapshots of tmous phones with those icons...
i have been using bsnl cellone 3g since feb and i always got H in south india, even while roaming,...in few cities up north, like lucknow, i got only 3g icon displayed..i guess it should be H in mumbai..
from what you say, i think you have not enabled HSDPA/HSPA setting in the phone...do that..it is in settings/menu/all settings/connection manager or ?phone / advanced network ( i think...can't tell exactly where...iam presently on the android side...)

both H icon and speeds on 1.48 wwe and 3.14 wwe roms
Hi I use an unlocked TMOUS HD2 here in Italy with the italian carrier PosteMobile and experience the same problem of silenced3 (almost the same as I still haven't tried a cellular data connection): My phone doesn't show the kind of cellular signal available, only when it data connection is activated it says what type of connection it's using. Anyone knows how to solve this?
Thank you for your help...
I'm confirmed that my hometowm support the 21M hspa+ network, but why my gs3 can't lock the hspa+ network. When I open the data,H+ just showed at a very short time, and then it turns to H.
And I moddified the build.prop hsxpa=2,and flash the modem.but it just can't lock:crying:who can help me. thanks
I'm pretty sure that phones will only go to H+ if they actually need it. Hence you'll find that if you start requesting data, it will switch over to H+ again, and then revert to basic H when it's done. Probably not an issue.

thanks,I know what you said, but I want to ask is that even it starts requesting data,it just stay at H,not H+.It just show at a very short time ,then it turns to H and alaways to be H.
In which case it's a problem with either your network provider or your phone. I'd suspect your provider primarily; give them a call and see if they can help.

and I have tried my white one and the blue one,it all can't,may be I should connect the network engineer
To expand to what anthropolyte said, the GS3 has a Fast Dormancy mode, where it'll connect to H+ network when is truly needed (heavy surfing/streaming, etc), and when the phone is mainly idle or doing light/periodical syncing, it'll switch back down to H or even 3G to conserve battery. As far as I know, Fast Dormancy must be supported by your carrier (which it does in your case) and must have a compatible phone to toggle between different network mode (GSM/HSPDA/UMTS, etc) to increase battery life.

but I have tried a lot of network things to do,such as online video, downloading sth,and etc.I saw there is nothing can even use the hspa+ network.I'll connect the network engineer and I think this is their problem.btw thanks a lot,and I'm a chinese user
mine alternates between 3g and H+ too. It bumps it up to H+ when I start using apps. The slight lag before it kicks in is not a bad trade off for better battery life.

Same here. 3G <---> H <---> H+ but when I start using apps like Youtube, H+ kicks in and everything is ok...
I noticed I never get a 3G icon while using data. I get an H, G or E, but never 3G.
After some research, looks like my phone should work (my carrier, TIM, uses 2100 Mhz), but I couldn't find exact info if my city has this frequency.
Anyway, is this a software phone fault, or SIM card fault, or carrier or the info I got is wrong?

Isn't H and 3G the same thing? If you can get more than 0.3mbit then you have it just fine

Dont worry

H is better than 3G. so it isn't a big deal.
H is HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) thats like 3.5G.
so don't worry its only better to have H.

3.5G wasn't HSPDA+, something that the XS doesn't have (I think)?
Anyway, I never got 3G. Always jumped from H to E.
H is faster then 3G.
You might get the 3g icon if you go to villages rather then a big city. (though I don't see why it should bother)

3.5G = HSDPA
3.75G = HSUPA (HSDPA+)
4G = LTE
meh it isn't a big deal, once you have H you never want 3G.
But it depends what data-speed your provider provides.
Well, when the data connection is idle, it shows the 3G icon. And when the transfer is active, it changes to H icon. If you notice, whenever there is H, the two arrows are lit up. As simple as that

I think it's a carrier thing.
On O2 IRL at home I either have H or E . When I was on holidays, with a local SIM card I had H, 3G and E .
On my way home I seem to get 3G connection. So it's probably a signal strength thing. In my town and in the city where I work, I either get H or E. And sometimes even G alone lol
Is there any way of getting my i9300 to only look for H or H+ or even just H+ signal? Its just I am on a ****ty tesco network based on o2 and if it ever switches to G or E it basically does not work (useless)! And sometimes it gets stuck on G even in an area I know the H+ works and wont switch back unless I turn flight mode on and off! Thanks.

Activate WCDMA only. ( Option in Network Options )
This will bring you to 3G until HSPDA+ (3.75G)
