I don't have a data plan so I don't want my phone always looking for 3G and edge
what would I need to do to disable those and still be able to receive calls and texts or is that even possible?

Go into settings, wireless and network, mobile networks, network mode, gsm only
Gsm only = 2g
Wcdma = 3g
auto = both

k done that, and should i check packet data and data roaming?
I use a different method:
Settings-->Wireless and Network-->Mobile Networks-->Access Point Names-->T-Mobile US-->scrol to the bottom where it says APN Type. Change it to MMS.
What this does: It disables 3G and 2G/Edge all the time EXCEPT when your phone is sending or receiving a picture message. In this case, your vibrant will connect to 2G/3G and send/receive the picture message. It will then turn them off again. You do not get charged data for sending picture messages.
Experience: I do not have a data plan either. Have been running my Vibrant for half a year like this.

Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone has been able to disable the AT&T mobile network but still been able to get multimedia messages. From the home screen I push menu, settings, battery & data management, data delivery and uncheck data enabled.
While this does turn off my internet connection to AT&T, I cannot get mms messages from my buddies.
I was able to disable the internet on the htc inspire.
Not sure if this is just phone related or rom related. Im using the alien rom.

you need to be connected to AT&T with data enabled, thats how the message is downloaded lol.
If you're not connected to the ATT network, there's no way they can get a message to you. It's looking for your IMEI/ESN on the network to be able to transmit the information to your phone.
Then how come with my old inspire I could get mms while mobile network was turned off?
I have the 200 MB limit and I don't want to go over it... with the inspire it had an option to disable the internet from att. The only internet I had was with.

MMS needs data connection however AT&T text messaging plan includes data for MMS.
for internet browsing and apps you needs separate data plan. MMS will work (keep your phone's data connection enabled) with regular text messaging plan.

I would be okay with that if the data from the mms didn't count toward our data quota. That is the problem with the mms on our phones.

I am using the Atrix on T-Mobile US and I can tell you that for my carrier MMS data DOES NOT count towards data plan limit.

The data used to send an MMS message does not count towards your data plan quota on AT&T either.
I think you need to enable data using a mms only APN. Sorry, i'm not real good with APNs so i'm not sure what the settings need to be.

Hi friends.
Is anybody know how the data transmission (EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA) is working during the voice call?
What is the rule?
I thought it is stopped when the voice call is in progress, but I realised few times that it is still working when the call is started (data & voice at the same time).
What is the key?
Thanks in advance for help in this. Regards!

HSPA works on a different frequency, EDGE uses the voice channel. Not sure about UMTS but no one uses it anyway.
2g and edge stop during calls but 3g don't.

Does the phone always use 2g for calls or does it use3g if it's available?

Depends on your settings; If you have set it to use WCDMA only all the time, it will look for 3G networks, if it's set to GSM/WCDMA the phone will connect to 3G network if possible, else, use the 2G (GSM ) band.
So if your phone is connected to WCDMA network, you can make calls and be able to use the internet at the same time ( data will not be interrupted ).
However, if for any reason the 3G network drops, the phone will switch to GSM mode and all data tramission will be on hold.
Be aware that 3G drains the battery way faster than GSM; however, during data transmission on 2G networks, your phone will not be able to receive calls since it's a Class B GPRS device, meaning it switches between data and voice automatically, but the two cannot happen at the same time; however, the two are always on.
Some phones ie. Nokia will give priority to phone calls over data packets, downloads will get interrupted if you receive a call; on some other devices ie. iPhone, data packet will never be interrupted unless idle or outgoing call.
3G is shown as H on your screen which is HSPA ( high speed packet access ) and as said will allow both voice and data transmission at the same time.
Hi I wanted to know how do I set my phone to sent mms without me turning on my 3g,I know that I have to use 3g to send but my question is if I'm on Wi-Fi how do I set my phone to automatically go into 3g mode,I have to put on my 3g manually? When sending a mms

With my GT-I9100 (Galaxy S II) I have to turn on my data to download a mms, so you may have to do the same. Make sure your APN settings are set to default, and when you turn on Data, make sure Packet Data and Data roaming are on as well. When you finish sending or downloading a mms, turn off the data.
I don't have a 3g or 4g data plan with my network so I just use the EDGE data which charges me a few extra cents when I turn it on to download or send mms.
Anyone have issues roaming? I'm in Paris and can't connect to a local network at all. Won't even register. WiFi calling seems to work, but I can't get even an emergency call to connect unless on wifi

Did you add Roaming to your account before leaving to France? I would also make sure that:
1. Network mode is GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto
2. If you search for Network Operators from your phone, does it find anything?
3. Ensure that Data Roaming is selected
Also, power off your device completely and wait for 5 min before switching on (NOT AIRPLANE MODE). These tips have worked for me in the past, not with this phone but with other GSM phones. Please let me know any resolution, I will be going to the EU very soon and I'm hoping to know the experience from another TMo user.
Hope it helps!
Hello everyone. I jsut got my Le Max 2 yesterday and noticed a very annoying issue. I can't send or receive MMS messages....that is unless I manually change my network from 4G to 3G. It's very strange that the phone doesn't do this itself.
I've entered in all the correct APN settings (this was needed in order for me to get 4G speeds. The downside is that it only stays on 4G unless i tell it to switch.
Some useful info:
I am on the stock rom 5.8.018S (stable)
I went into the menu via dialer *#*#4636#*#* and have selected LTE/GSM
I 'm on the Fido network in Canada (same as Rogers)
Will flashing another, newer rom solve my problem? Any help or advice would be appreciated!
I am with Freedom Mobile and do not have 4G. In the phone settings, dual SIM networks, network mode, even I set to 4G priority, I can get 3G without problem . In the *#*#4636#*#*, it was set to unknown by default. If you set it to LTE/GSM, I don't see how you can get 3G.

If I don't set it to that I won't get LTE. I can also leave it at unknown but it'll stay on 4g at all times. Point is, unless I manually go and select 3G priority and have the phone stay in 3G I won't be able to send/receive MMS.
I'm also having issues with the LED. It only works for text messages but doesn't light up for Hangouts or email (emails don't push either). As you can see lots of annoying issues! I'm not sure it's worth keeping the phone unless flashing a rom will solve this things.
