Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone has been able to disable the AT&T mobile network but still been able to get multimedia messages. From the home screen I push menu, settings, battery & data management, data delivery and uncheck data enabled.
While this does turn off my internet connection to AT&T, I cannot get mms messages from my buddies.
I was able to disable the internet on the htc inspire.
Not sure if this is just phone related or rom related. Im using the alien rom.

you need to be connected to AT&T with data enabled, thats how the message is downloaded lol.
If you're not connected to the ATT network, there's no way they can get a message to you. It's looking for your IMEI/ESN on the network to be able to transmit the information to your phone.
Then how come with my old inspire I could get mms while mobile network was turned off?
I have the 200 MB limit and I don't want to go over it... with the inspire it had an option to disable the internet from att. The only internet I had was with.

MMS needs data connection however AT&T text messaging plan includes data for MMS.
for internet browsing and apps you needs separate data plan. MMS will work (keep your phone's data connection enabled) with regular text messaging plan.

I would be okay with that if the data from the mms didn't count toward our data quota. That is the problem with the mms on our phones.

I am using the Atrix on T-Mobile US and I can tell you that for my carrier MMS data DOES NOT count towards data plan limit.

The data used to send an MMS message does not count towards your data plan quota on AT&T either.
I think you need to enable data using a mms only APN. Sorry, i'm not real good with APNs so i'm not sure what the settings need to be.

I don't have a data plan so I don't want my phone always looking for 3G and edge
what would I need to do to disable those and still be able to receive calls and texts or is that even possible?

k done that, and should i check packet data and data roaming?
I use a different method:
Settings-->Wireless and Network-->Mobile Networks-->Access Point Names-->T-Mobile US-->scrol to the bottom where it says APN Type. Change it to MMS.
What this does: It disables 3G and 2G/Edge all the time EXCEPT when your phone is sending or receiving a picture message. In this case, your vibrant will connect to 2G/3G and send/receive the picture message. It will then turn them off again. You do not get charged data for sending picture messages.
Experience: I do not have a data plan either. Have been running my Vibrant for half a year like this.

i can also recieve phone calls/text with NO delay and stuff?
i have a bit of a problem with 3G data and mms. in original stock 2.1 from SE i can disable 3G data, but that will not turn off MMS sending and receiving.
however, in most froyo, including in CM6-final. this is not possible. we have to enable both 3G data to get mms to work. however... i dont have a 3G data plan, and it can be very expensive .............
here are some facts that i have tried out:
1. using SE stock 2.1, it is possible to disable 3G data but still receive send mms
2. using SE stock 2.1, it is possible to have only 1 APN for mms without other types (default, supl), but still receive send mms
3. it is a froyo bug, based on things i found on the internet
4. some brand such samsung motorola, have patched it
5. i tried to set up different APN for mms (mms) and 3G (degault, supl). still can not do mms without 3G data
6. i set up only 1 APN for mms... it doesnt work
7. different APN for mms and 3G data, send an mms to myself, works, and then i delete APN for 3G data. now mms can work with only mms APN. and i dont have 3G data activity at all. but after restart. can not work again
anyone, any idea how to get the mms working without enabling 3G data?
ok. thank you
cheers

this is exactly what i was trying to explain
btw, i tried to use SMART APN apk. but it doesnt help
i am using x10 mini pro on owain CM-6 final
Anyone ..?
i know it might not be important to some. but here, where i live, i could get charge with something like 2000 USD if i am not being carefull with my data usage....
i really need mms to work, without having to enable data for web. just 3G for mms only...coz i can not text sms to other operator, must use mms. sms is locked inter operator only
perhaps this might help u

thanx man!
unfortunately, i tried that in my step 6 above
"6. i set up only 1 APN for mms... it doesnt work"
it won`t connect. saying data service unavailable... the only way i can get mms to work is by "fishing" 3G data using 2 APN, and then delete APN for internet, leaving MMS alone. still, after i reboot, i get data service unavailable and have to "fish" again.

i assumed that u followed the instructions word by word rite?
personally, i'm not using 3G connection, i only use 2G and my service operator won't charge any excess fee if i leave my connection on..so i can't really help much
i just happen to saw that thread and i thought that might do some help to u..
Yup
Thanks. I really appreciate it. I can not use 2g here in japan. All network services are in 3g. No more 2g.
Oot a bit, it was quiet amazing for me, as a foreigner, in sendai that during the earthquake, 3g data service are fully operasional at full speed eventhough we hno gas water and all.
Anyway, I finally found the answer.
I installed quick settings from market (they have several app with that name, i use the one by sergej shafarenka). Use it to disable mobile data.get mms, with not 3g internet.
it wasnt my idea too to be honest. Someone post it in an old thread for samsung galaxy. I ran in to it accidentally today. Fiuuuhhhh...now I would not have to worry anymore
I got my wife a Vibrant the other day to replace her current non-smartphone. She does not have a data plan. She will, however, be adding the pay per use data to her account so she can sporadically use data on a trip next weekend, but she wants to be able to turn the regular data off (as to not incur charges when she does not explicitly want to use the data) while still being able to use MMS (as she has a messaging plan).
Is there a way to toggle the Data on and off at will but still be able to send and recieve MMS with the regular data off? I have read that APNDroid does not work on the vibrant (and other galaxy s phones), though other people say it does.
The phone is stock Froyo 2.2 and only has one APN (T-Mobile US, epc.tmobile.com). Should I create a separate apn for MMS only and change the regular apn's type to just "internet" from "internet + mms"? Or would that still not work with APNDroid in the way I'd like?
Thanks for any help.
No. Go into the APN setting. At the VERY bottom, there is APN type. Set it to MMS only. That way it will only activate when an MMS is received/sent. That is the same setting you describe in your post.
Be aware that MMS data usage will NOT get charged. Yes, it is technically using data but if your wife has texting, sending and receiving MMS messages will not incur you ANY charges, even though it uses data.
Note though that it's not perfect. Sometimes MMS gets bugged where it fails to download because the phone bugged and didn't establish a data connection. In that case, just go in the same menu and refresh it or go to the market so it establishes a connection and everything will work. Hope that helps.
Source: I have my Vibrant with data completely shut off. I don't pay for data and never have since I bought it. I have wifi most places.
Hi All,
My wife doesn't have a data plan for her Mini Pro, so we have the network data turned off.
She uses text/mms a lot and I wanted to see if there is a way to allow her MMS (Handcent) to access the network data to download pictures without allowing any other programs to access the network data.
Currently, when she receives an MMS, I turn on her network data, download the pic and then turn it back off. As you can imagine, it is not a long-term solution.
For all other data, she uses wifi -
I appreciate any help/insights you all may have!
Afaik, MMS uses a separate apn from data connections. Meaning you could totally turn off data and she would still be able to use MMS. As to your question, Permissions Denied or LBE Privacy Guard might be what you're looking for.
This may be an issue specific to AT&T in the US, but to receive picture messages on their network, you need to enable the network data.
For text messages, they will come and go even with the data turned off as they are routed seperately.
I'll see if the programs you recommended might be a way for me to restrict all network data access except to mms -
I have the same problem using Telcel in Mexico.
I do the same thing as you do to your wife's phone, sadly I haven't found a workaround. Good thing is we get notified when we receive a MMS so we know when to enable it.
You can add a widget or use the status bar to turn data on/off with a single touch, I think that's the fastest way without leaving it on all the time.
I forgot to mention APNdroid. Just search for it on the market. It disables the network connection by modifying the APN.
I saw this posted elsewhere on XDA and it seemed to work so far (I'll let you know after I receive my bill at the end of the month).
"Go into apn settings. If you have only one for data and mms, then edit it, and right at the end "apn type" probably says "default " or perhaps "*" or maybe "default, supl, mms "
Change that to say just "mms"
If you have two entries one will be for default, supl and will have a on off toggle, the second will be for mms and won't have a toggle. Just toggle off the data one or edit out the default in apn type."
When I launched the web browser it said I was not connected to the internet, but I was still able to send and receive picture messages.

Hi I wanted to know how do I set my phone to sent mms without me turning on my 3g,I know that I have to use 3g to send but my question is if I'm on Wi-Fi how do I set my phone to automatically go into 3g mode,I have to put on my 3g manually? When sending a mms
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
With my GT-I9100 (Galaxy S II) I have to turn on my data to download a mms, so you may have to do the same. Make sure your APN settings are set to default, and when you turn on Data, make sure Packet Data and Data roaming are on as well. When you finish sending or downloading a mms, turn off the data.
I don't have a 3g or 4g data plan with my network so I just use the EDGE data which charges me a few extra cents when I turn it on to download or send mms.
