Is there an easy way to merge contacts on the phone? For example, I have a couple hundred contacts I copied from my SIM card to the phone. Is there an easy way to link these to GMail contacts (they don't already exist in GMail) or do I have to manually create a new contact, and link them for each one?
Also, on another Vibrant of mine, I have the reverse problem. All of the contacts are GMail/Facebook linked, but not Phone. So I can't set custom ringtones for any of them. Is there an easy way to make them also on the phone so I can set ringtones?
Thanks!
I hated having to store existing contacts to phone just to set up custom ringtones, thankfully 2.2 fixes this. Also, theres an import/export option, if it saves the contacts to a .csv file than you can import those to gmail like that.
My advice..root and upgrade to JL4 2.2 stock firmware. everything works and battery life has been great for the past 4 or 5 days.
Good to hear. I wonder if this is an issue in all pre-2.2 android phones, or just samsung?
Nope it was not an issue on my g1. I think you could assign custom ringtones back in 1.5 using stock dialer...its just touchwiz as far as I know.

I have multiple versions of contacts, those with numbers that are not on facebook, and people who use their real names on facebook that don't merge immediately on their own, etc. How can I permanently merge contacts/pics/etc. I didn't have an issue until flashing Eclipse V.7 now everything is unmerged. None of them are even automatically merging like they had done before(Same name and everything).
There are two ways of doing this depending on how you want to go about it. The reason it doesn't show up as a problem until you use Eclipse is because Motorola Blur merges everything and honestly, at least in my opinion, creates a mess. lol.
The first option you have is to go on GMail and merge and organize them yourself. You can also export contacts from Facebook into Yahoo and then export from Yahoo to gmail. I also know that with Eclipse I think you have to use Friendfeed or something like that to sync your Facebook contacts. Oopps I guess there really isn't a second option anymore, I kinda merged it all into one as I was typing.
With version 0.7 the native facebook app will sync with your contacts. I guess I forgot to mention that in the latest changelog!

I already did it all by hand. I was hoping there was a shortcut as I have over 700 contacts(not Facebook friends as I am leaving that ****ty site in a week, just contacts) LMAO.
Thanks for the help though!
Mine came in mismatched too. Ex puts them all together as far as I can tell.

I just finished installing a new, custom, ROM (Cognition X2 Beta 4). Everything is running well and there is no lag I know of.
Only one problem: All my contacts are gone.
I thought Google backed them up (with Google Sync). Apparently not! Even though my picture albums, gmail, and calendar; my contacts are still the same default AT&T contacts!
Does anybody know I can PLEASE get my old contacts back? I MUST have them (I JUST got everyone manually saved on my new phone from my old iPhone 4 - and restored the iPhone. F U 0 K!)
Yes, I did backup the "stock" rooted ROM. Is it possible to extract the contacts from it - without restoring back to it?
I'm desperate.

Go into your gmail on pc Web Browser and look on left side you will see contacts look to see if your phone contacts are there. If not then back up your current system in cwm then restore the stock one. Sync contacts with google let it finish then restore cognition backup in cwm. Sucks but easiest way to get them back.
Google only syncs the contacts that is in GMail contacts. Your phone supports many different contact providers. You can have Gmail contacts, exchange server contacts, facebook contacts and Phone contacts. The default is phone contact which syncs with no one. If you only save your contacts in Phone contact, you will never get that synced to the cloud. So, next time when when you create a new contact, pay attention to the where the contact is going and make sure it is Gmail contacts.
How did you back up your stock ROM? With titanium backup? If so restore your contacts with it. When you make a gmail account, make sure you go in your contacts app press menu/more/settings/save new contacts to/your google account or always ask and not to your phone so it can auto sync.
If you ever came from an iPhone or any other phone and transferred your contacts to Android. Go in your contacts app cause it's usually not stored in the google account to sync but rather the phone. Press menu/import & export/export to sd card....you will have a vcf file on your storage card. Go on gmail thru the computer. On your left pan you should see contacts. With your phone plugged into your computer, pull the vcf file or just upload it directly from your phone to your gmail using a file explorer on your phone like Astro. Back to your gmail on the computer...press contacts and find the button more in the center. Press import from there and merge and find duplicates if you need to.

Hey guys!
I recently flashed my HD2 with a Cyanogen based ROM - Hyperdroid - which I recommend whole heartedly. Before that I had a Sense based one which I did not like that much..
However, laggy and clunky as it was it did have something I really appreciated: an app to migrate contacts and sms from previous phones and a nice contact aggregator (not sure if I can call it that) that paired facebook contacts with phone contacts.
I was wondering if any of you fine folks knew about a similar app available from the market or somewhere else. Thanks!

Have a look at Call Logs Backup & Restore and SMS Backup & Restore, both available in the Market.
I currently use NexusHD2 CyanogenMod 9 ICS by tytung and the Gingerbread versions (non-cyanogen) before it and I always migrated SMS and contacts with these apps though Google also restores contacts.
Thanks But what I was looking for is an app to import data from another - in this case non-android - phone.. Any ideas?
To say this is coming late is would be the biggest understatement of the decade. I believe you did find a solution at some point but for anyone else who is interested, "Bluetooth File Transfer" by Medieval Software has a option for exploring another devices data over Bluetooth.
Found it when I used Java-based feature phones in the past but realised it works on Android too.
Why do you need an app for this? You can just sync your contacts with gmail which is the best way to keep your contacts. I used this method between android and iphone. Other than that I used windows programs before I used gmail where you export the contacts to the pc then import them to another device or something like that. Syncing with gmail is the best choice though.
Hi Guys, hope this thead is approppriate here.
I wonder how do you manage your contacts, for me it turned out very messy. Well I don't really have problem with Google contacts, but since our phones are also capable to show FB and many accounts contacts i would be awesome to combien all the useful infos....something like ENHANCING my Gooogle contacts using other accounts infos (like picture ansd birthdays, among others)
I don{t know if this is a temporary issu....but My FB contact are not synching well and and pictures are not always synched.
I used to have an iPhone 3gs and ther was this app called "MyPhone+"....was very handy......anyone know something like this for Android!
Hope you can help me....!
Thanks!

you can manage contacts over here https://www.google.com/contacts/
If you only need to add the syncing aspect, Friends Sync by WATTO Studios is my Fave. It's consistent, small, fast, & syncs more fields than other apps. The logo is ugly, though, IMO.

from your account of Gmail , enter the version web and edit your contacts, it works for me.:good:
Windows Phone has an option of linking two or more contacts. Quite useful. There must be an easy way in Android as well.
When you go to Contacts and select any contact, there should be an option to join contacts. You can cut out the duplicate entries this way and have all the info show up on one name.
When you join contacts it's works but if you wipe flash new rom all changes revert back

Google Contacts the very first time is a mess, but after you reorganize all your contacts everything works simple fine
Myphoneexplorer is quite good for cleaning up contacts. Used to allow merging but for some reason that got taken away.

I keep all my contacts in Microsoft outlook on my PC and sync using "myphonexplorer".
Categories in outlook sync with groups in both stock android contact manager and "go contacts".
I prefer "go contacts" to the stock contact manager because if fully customizable and allows group messaging without the cap on number of contacts also group chat..
"Myphonexplorer" syncs contacts, messages, calendar, and files via usb and Wi-Fi. Also allows you to text from your PC.
The only things missing from "Myphonexplorer" is mms and group messaging from PC which would be really nice.
Both "Myphonexplorer" and "go contacts" are free in the play store.

Not if you sync them to Google after you have them sorted the way you want.
i don't want to open a new topic just for this question, so i'll post it here:
When adding a new contact to a google account from android, is there any way to auto insert that contact to a custom created group? I keep forgetting to add the new contacts to a specific group and i want this operation to be done automatically, any solutions?

vCard sucks.. it doesnt support enough kinds of information, such as categories.. it doesnt work worth crap for CJK Characters either.. I cant believe every single program for Android only supports vCrap anyway.. but its all we have for now I guess... Windows 7 only has vCard 2.1 support.. .. but, it could be remedied on the software end by a program that would allow you to group contacts by a specific field.. you could then use one of the other existing fields as a "Categories" field...
there arent really any good programs from what I've seen.. honestly, I think i need to learn how to program an Android app just so I can find something useful so i'm not always stuck in suckville
but then, i dont think android will be around much longer.
This may be in wrong form, and maybe it should be in development thread for the liquid smooth Rom. I asked there and cannot find in other searches so please help.
Before this Rom I was able to set a default for where new contacts were saved. I believe it was in contacts somewhere around display options.
I want all new contacts to go to one of two Gmail accounts every time.
I cannot find where to set that, and so, saved now go to phone or SIM, I think, and when I reflash I lose those new contacts.
Anyone know where to set a default for this? Maybe it changed between ics and jb and possibly is not just the new liquid Rom.
Thanx.
