So I recently started messing around with speedtest.net. When I'm in a strong 3G area I see around 5 mbps down. At home on wifi I see around 1.5 mbps down. At face value, it looks like my 3G is faster than my wifi. Can this be true? My ISP only offers up to 1.5 mbps in my area. Should I just get wifi tether and use my phone for internet at home, or do the stats from speedtest only tell a part of the story?

it is possible that your phone is faster. There are a few things to keep in mind though. How much data do you use? If it is more than 5 GB keep your DSL. The other is are you playing video games? If you are playing games that require a low ping then also stay with your DSL. If you are using low amounts of bandwidth and not playing games you might want to switch.

It's certainly possible, but it doesn't neccessarily mean that your speeds will stay consistent or even be as fast when tethered. Also, your wifi speed will vary based on your distance from your router.
Also keep in mind that your 3G contract has a 5GB cap. From what I understand this simply means your speeds will be throttled down once you reach the cap (and there are some workarounds that may or may not work well out there).
3G is one of the most inconsistent broadband connection out there, so personally I'd never rely on it as my primary internet source, but it's up to you
Awesome answers, I appreciate the info!

Fascinate speedtest.net issue
I have a fascinate running 3.0/dl9 ie 2.2.1-when I run speedtest.net results are pretty crappy for northern VA, usually around 500-800kb. Anyone else getting terrible speeds? Is there places to check settings for this? My wife has a Droid x and she got about 2600 on a test last night three times. Seems like my fascinate is throttled. Any advice appreciated.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
The fascinate seems to have a ****ty antenna, my OG droid gets at least -10 dBm more than my fascinate no matter where it is at. Hope fully when they actually release froyo it has a better modem and gets better service(which I doubt). I also get really ****ty connections to mobile networks and even wifi networks, I can be 10 feet from the router and only get 2 bars for it. I am trying to see if I can add iwconfig and iwlist commands to the fascinate, but I am having little success with it. I am not too knowledgeable with android at this point.
Was your wifes wifi on? I rarely get over 1mbps
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
EVDO can't support more than about 1.5Mbps for a sustained transfer. The 2600 that your wife got would have dropped down if the test had run longer, at least it should have as that is more like a burst speed, which could be in the 3-4Mbps range. Your results seem completely normal.
I hit 1.7mbps on 3g yesterday in the los Angeles area
Sent from my SCH-I500
I believe that Verizon's EV-DO Rev. A network has a max burst rate of 3.1mbps. Sustained rate should be about 1/2 of this. I consistently get 1.5Mbps and I have a giant cell tower right outside my work (I get 4 bars even in the middle of the building).
speedtest
I'm topping out at about .14mb up and .29mb down with three bars on 3g... It's pretty consistently low, usually about .1 for both. I can barely stream a 2 minute youtube video half the time.
My Samsung Omnia was much, much faster- I could tether and stream Netflix with very little buffer time using it. With this, it's a laughable thought. Disappointing, and I haven't been able to find any suggestions for boosting it.

Installed the above config and it brought my test speed up to .70/.54. Much improved. I'd like to blame the rest of the slow speeds on living in a rural area, but it's not THAT rural (just outside Atlanta), and I have a friend who gets MUCH faster speeds on his Incredible.
I don't know why but my new GS2 is getting slow data speeds through the Ookla speed test app. My girlfriend's Atrix 2 gets consistently 5-6mbps. Using the same server, my GS2 only pulls in 1-2mbps. My sister got a GS2 also and getting same results. Does the GS2 just have a bad antenna? I thought this was supposed to be a great phone..
I assume your talking about 4g speeds sounds like your not connected to a 4g network your pulling 3g speeds also what carrier are you on? Some phones just because you enable 4g dosent mean your connected ensure this and test
if I helped in any way hit that thanks button!
i'm on AT&T. Both phones are. The GS2 has an H+ symbol
Same here. I have never got over 3mbps. I have yet to really find out why. I think its like that for many of us.

Nope... :/
Anyone have any idea why the GS2 is getting subpar HSPA+ speeds? Is there anything I can do about it?
Just ran more speed tests.... Atrix 2 gets 6.75mbps down while GS2 gets 3mbps down... can anyone help me out? I'm thinking of returning the GS2 :|
I checked signal strength under both phones, and it's pretty much the same. Both are on 'phone' APN. I'm clueless
I'm having the same issue. This is what I have been doing use Speakeasy.net form the browser and speed test there. I was getting 1-3 mbps with speedtest app. From what I have heard that app doesnt provide correct results. From this site on the browser im getting 5-10mbps. Try it out and see if it helps
Thanks for your response. The speedtest app gave me 2.5mbps down. Speakeasy gave me 6.44mbps. Wow! What a difference. Thanks!
So it's the app then? Strange....
I feel better now about the GS2.
I get the same slow speeds from speak easy
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
Yeah the speedtests even with Speakeasy are inconsistent on the GS2. I did a bunch of tests now which ranged between 1.5mbps to 3mbps, and sometimes higher to 5mbps. Meanwhile the Atrix 2 easily stays consistently between 5mbps and 6mbps.
Maybe i'll try the AT&T store to see if they can help
I got the Network Speed app to monitor realtime bandwidth. Streaming from Google Music, I saw speeds of 700kb/s to 1mb/s. Crazy fast. Doing a speedtest on Speakeasy and Ookla only got 250kb/s to 300kb/s
Seems like the GS2 just has a problem with speed tests.
Love the speed on my 4glte (30mbps! WOW!), plus I do have unlimited data (grandfathered), so the only reason I use wifi is so that I don't over abuse the unlimited data every month, or if I want to save on battery life.
That said, wifi is extremely slow. I have 20mbps cable at home and I only get 2 through my phone, even when standing right next to the router. My laptop connects to the same network and gets 10!? Why is the wifi on these phones so slow (same issue with tbolt)?
Also if u have unlimited data how much do u use month? Are you afraid they might take it from u?

I've noticed the same thing. I have 35/35 internet at home, but when the phone is connected to WiFi I don't get anywhere near those speeds. I actually almost get better speeds leaving the phone on 4G even though I'm lucky if I have two bars at times.
Never have been able to find out why, but since I do have unlimited data as well (grandfathered) I typically just leave the 4G on and forget about WiFi.
My typical data usage per month is two maybe three gigabytes with moderate usage, but now that I'm on 4G it might increase some since I'll probably use Google Music more often.

I get 25mbps to my home and pull 17-22 on the phone. You may have a bad antenna. Also, speed test isn't very accurate. Your "speed" is restricted to what the server you are pulling from can provide. Also, you may have a bad/slow router. If it is dated, I suggest upgrading.
So long as you are not using exponential amounts of data, like 8-10GB, they shouldn't throttle you, and they CAN'T just take it from you.
I don't have unlim because I just switched last week. But I have the double data 4GB plan. Really glad I have that and not 2 gig because I am using an average of 2-3x the data that I did each day on my Desire before I switched. LTE just causes you to use more lol.
I wish I had unlimited because I would watch a fair amount of netflix over 4G
BTW, I have a Linksys E1500 Router.
I agree. You may have a bad antenna, because my Wifi speeds are just fine. I get 30 down and 7 or so up, so there's no problem there. Here's something I've noticed though: My wifi won't stay connected while the phone is asleep. It always goes back onto 4g for some reason. This happening to anyone else?
The only time i get wifi is at Starbucks or the library... and both places are show as hell. No internet(or even tv) at home because i am rarely home. So that being the case, i absolutely never ever use wifi period.
As for data usage, let's just say it's enough that a few people here have labeled it "abuse".

It is a setting. The phone is set to go back to 3G/4G after 15 minutes of sleep by default. You can change that in Wifi Settings. You may have to hit the menu button and go to the "advanced" menu to change the setting.

I use 10-20 GB a month and they don't throttle. They only throttle top 5% of 3G users and only on crowded towers and peak times.
low WiFi speed usually means your router is using overused channel (channel that many of your neighbors are using). WiFi Analyzer is nice free app that will tell you which channel to use.

That's about what I get too. I don't think it is the antenna, I think its the channel and or the bandwidth / modulation settings on the router.
I noticed when I turned my data connection of my WiFi seemed faster. My home network is maybe 15-20mbps and I usually get 12mbps in speed test. If I have data on WiFi is slower.
4g even with one or two bars is about 6-
12 mbps but I loose signal in parts of my house.

no problems for me, get wifi at 10-20mbps down and 5 up, and my home plan is 30/5 so that is good.
My wi-fi works as good as the data connections, no problems with wi-fi being slow. Use wi-fi 80% of the day and it is always fast.

Almost always on LTE now. I don't see anywhere near the speeds others get. Usually around 5megs.
This month already I have used 4 gigs of data. the most I ahve ever used in 3g was 3.6. BTW, my billing cycle is only 5 days old
Gotta love netflix and Sons of Guns!!!

You might be in an extended coverage area, and like I stated above, SpeedTest is not accurate at all and completely dependent on the server you pull from. Try changing servers and I bet you see faster speeds.
a friend of mine said that verizon will throttle you above a certain data usage. So we decided to test the theory.
I setup an FTP from my home PC, and proceeded to DL , over 4g, my entire movie collection.
It was a little hard to do because the SD card (16gb one) kept getting full. I ended up with about 33GB of usage for that month. (This was using the droid charge a few months ago)
no overage fees, no throttling.
However I bet if i did that every month, i might see throttling.
If you lived in a high use location (like NYC) you might have gotten a warning.

I checked this "advanced" setting just for the heck of it and saw a setting for "best connection" or something similar. It seems by default this is checked off cause it says it uses more battery. Once I turned this on I doubled my wifi speed so it seems like everything is now working correctly.
Thanks everyone for the posts and ideas! Great community here when we're not flaming each other about who "might" be coming out with root...lol

I use wireless tether on my sense based custom rom and lately I've been doing a lot of tethering, when I'm in a fixed place like my hotel last week, I got great speeds 6-10 mbps on LTE, but if I'm moving, say pn a bus like I am now or the the backset of a taxi, speeds drop drastically whether on a 4G or 3G connection I get approximately 200 - 400 kbps, I understand that speeds while moving with a mobile broadband connection will be slower, but I'm interested in what speeds others get and their rom / tether app used. 400kbps just seems excessively slow for 4G even though I'm moving.
It may be the tethering app just did a test on 4G and got 9.5 down and 3 up, interested in others experiences
[update]
already solved, took my laptop out of power saving mode and I got 16 down and 4 up, it must be a setting in power managerment / wifi settings
Never use tethering but when I take the bus to school I don't lose any 4gspeed or even go to 3g it stays in 4G, but I think my city has good 4G coverage

Hey guys, I have fios with 50/25 mbps I can get around 40 with my laptop but my note is getting low teens. I switched from a wep security to wpa2 security whichever increased my wifi on my laptop but not on my phones (note 2 and ssg3).
Any ideas how to increase this? Am I missing a setting when connecting to wifi? At the moment, my 4g is faster than my wifi.
Upload speeds are fine... Actually higher than my download speeds. Seems like something is restricting my download speed.
Thanks in advance.

I have FiOS as well and encounter the same "problem...". My chrombook gets above 40 Mbps and my Note 2 gets around 18-25 even standing next to my router...I just think its the way it is to be honest...I really don't know but just wanted to share that I'm seeing the same thing here...it really doesn't inhibit my experience at all 18-25 Mbps is perfectly fine for cell phone downloads etc.

Same set up here...with similar results. I did some research on this as my ipad2 (which is now in a drawer thanks to the Note 2 BTW) wasn't getting anywhere near the speed I would have expected despite it supposedly being N compatible (my lenovo laptop gets 45 Mbps down all the time). Best answer I could find is that not all wireless radios are equal and can't handle the same speeds.
I have a 25 download connection on FIOS, and am sitting in my living room about ten feet from my router. I just ran a test on my laptop and phone via speedtest.net, and got 24/5 on the laptop and 25/6 on the Note 2. Initially I was going to respond to your post and say I am used to the same result you are seeing, but I just proved myself wrong.
When I'm in other parts of the house however, I do tend to see more of a performance degradation on the phone vs. the laptop...I don't have any exact data at the moment since I'm feeling too lazy to walk upstairs and repeat the test, but I do know the falloff happens more rapidly on the phone with distance from the router.
This is what I get on my Comcast 50/15 connection.
Desktop hardwired: 59Mbps down / 12Mbps up
Desktop wireless: 55Mbps down / 12Mbps up
Note 2: 40Mbps down / 16Mbps up
My desktop on wireless connects at 144Mbps, while my Note 2 only connects at 72Mbps. Both are within 4' of the router. Both using the same SpeedTest.net server.
I've noticed a huge difference in WiFi speeds between the different radios, the one that had given me the best spotted on WiFi is VRAMC3. The one that gives me the best speed on LTE is L4. The speed definitely differs from which radio you flash, that's why I wish Samsung would give our devs access to their radio tools and let us build our own. I guarantee if they did we wouldn't see this kind of crap.
