Not sure if this should have gone in Q&A but since it's an app...
Anyone having problems running Google Nav 5.0 on JL5? Mine is just stiting at Waiting for location forever. Really it's not a big deal since I don't use my V for the gps but was just curious.
--Edit--
If I set to use GPS and Wireless Location, it sits at Checking Navigation availability...
Hi. Been having the same problem. Does it work better without wireless? Or is there a better app or modem to use? When it did lock on and start working, sometimes I really got turned around or pointer would jump to adjacent streets. Not fun for night driving!

Mine works fine. I just don't have the live wallpaper for some reason.
Forgot about this. But, fyi, after I fresh installed JL5, navigation 5.0 works fine. Not sure what the heck happened.
I'm having the same problem in Nero v2 (JL4)-sits at Waiting for Location. GPS locks really fast but I can't use Navigation at all...
Try this... Uninstall Google Maps 4.5.0 with Titanium. Then go to market and install the latest 5.0. Just be sure to back up 4.5.0 first and store it somewhere to restore just in case.

My GPS worked out of the box when I got this phone last week but now it hasn't locked on all day. I am running the latest evil fascination ROM. Any advice?
Did you try wiping data, cache, and dalvik after install?

I am having the exact same issue. I NEVER get a lock anymore - even leaving it on for 30 minutes....
I have been running various ComRoms with various kernels and radios and still the same unusable GPS. I have also played with GPS Aids, GPS Status, and some other ones. I have read all the various forum posts about this issue to. Still nothing.
Would really love to know if anyone has any new advice... I too am getting really sick of it not locking on at all.... it used to just be slow, now it's useless all together.
Similar issue on a i9000 galaxy S here. Question: do you all recall if prior to the issue appearing you upgraded the version of google maps installed? Or some other app?

It was that damned Google Maps update after all! I stumbled into this: http://www.google.ru/support/forum/p...053f4eeb&hl=en
Uninstalled (the updates over the stock) Google Maps and presto: locked just fine!
try rebooting phone leaving gps on. you might want to look into a gps aid like gps booster. Since I have been running the powerwash rom, gps works better than ever.
PLEASE NOTE: This patch addresses application force closes on newer google maps applications (5.5-5.7) running on gingerbread-based ROMs for the ERIS. This does not address reboots/restarts (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1157099 for progress on this other problem)
After extensive testing on CondemnedCM7 V15, I believe that the Navigation force closes many of us experience on the newest maps version is fixable (at least on Condemned's ROM; GSB users report that problems still remain) by rolling back google maps framework files to a version used for Android 2.2 ROMS. I have been testing since last week and have not had a single navigation force close. My longest test was 1 hour 10 mins with multiple reroutes and no force close. One known issue, Map application (not navigation) will unexpectedly close (that is, will not offer a force close but will shut down) randomly while using the search box. I have not been able to consistently reproduce this
I am attaching two zip files flashable from AmonRa Recovery if you would like to try the fix. The first replaces the current maps framework with the froyo framework. The second rolls back the change to the latest gingerbread framework.
If you are using maps 5.2 which CS included in the system apps for v15 and are happy with the result, then you do not need to flash this file. If you would like to use the newest maps app (5.7), you may wish to try this.
In theory, this fix would work on an AOSP or Cyanogen gingerbread ROM, so if folks on other devices are having similar problems, they may want to try.
Good luck everyone!
NOTE: this is repeated from CondemnedSoul's CM7 thread. The attachments can be found there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15978440&postcount=535
Thanks for everything your doing on this issue.
I upgraded to 5.7 and flashed the patch. Ran Nav for 30 minutes and all was fine. Not sure when I can test longer but if I do I'll let you know the results.
Only got to run Nav for another 30 minutes today but she worked flawlessly again.
Glad its working for someone other than me!

Have to go get it myself.
klob, will upgrading to 5.8 overwrite the fix files, or should I have run the unfix before upgrading?
Either way all I did was upgrade and so far Nav has been running for 40 minutes. Not driving anywhere, just have Nav running while I'm in the house.
Upgrading maps app will not affect the fix, so if you want to find out if it works with stock gapps, you'll need to flash the unfix. Also, bftb0 on the gsb thread has demonstrated that desktop navigation is not a good test for force closes. I'd get it on the road to be sure.
My commute starts in about 15 minutes. I'll report back soon...

I got to use Google Nav today and it wasn't the best. After 5 minutes it went shut off, just shut off and phone went to sleep. Opened Nav back up and after 14 minutes the map locked, never updated/moved, tough screen commands still came up along with menu but nothing worked. Rebooted and applied the fix that klobkelosh posted earlier and it didn't change anything, screen keeps freezing. This is all after full wipe and flashing latest CS v16 vanilla with 5.8 Maps.

Odd. I just full wipe installed ccm16sth with 5.8 maps and navigation worked fine. One thing I did was disable text to speech, maybe that's the culprit? You can disable by renaming system/lib/libtts.so.

GPS files the culprit?
Not sure if this will help but today running GSB 3.8 ODEX with Maps 5.8 (no framework mods.) my phone completely restarted in the middle of a walk. The thing is that I was not using Maps nor Nav. I WAS using TrackerBooster, an app that uses GPS to measure my walking distances. So maybe this is more related to GPS files than it is to Maps or Nav. As you can tell I am not a developer, so this may be all one and the same. Just thought posting it might lend a clue. Thanks for all you guys are doing to figure this out!

Something I noticed... making me wonder if it's memory allocation issue... after a reboot, going right into Nav, it still force closes but not until 30+ minutes,
If I haven't rebooted in a while and have been running other apps like, gmail, exchange, facebook, and the going driving with NAV the reboot happens right away
Hey XDA,
I'm looking for a rom with reliable gps.
I've used CM7 and Trigger and they both give me the same problems (probably cuz trigger is based off cm7).
I know people using CM7 are having issues getting a lock with the GPS but for me, my gps doesn't even try. for example, when i turn on my maps/navigation/gps test app, the blinking gps icon doesn't even show up. I can only get it to appear if i restart my phone and that's only the first time i run an app that uses gps. once it closes and i open an app to use gps again, nothing.
I'm going on a trip this weekend and I think it would be handy to have.
So my questions are.
1. If you're using cm7 or trigger, are you having the same experience? I assume people do get the icon in the notification bar but just can't lock satellites.
2. If your gps works, which rom are you using?
3. If you got your gps to work on cm7 or trigger, how did you do it? i think i've tried all the "working" ones from this forum. but i could be wrong/doing it wrong.
Thanks guys!
ps. I've done the hardware gps "fix" if that matters at all.
I am running MIUI revamped and managed to get it to work.
I think that some of the gps config tweaks were included in the 1.8.5 build.
I'm not entirely sure how (I tried a lot of the fixes), but right now it is locking, and can relock. I ran it this morning on my way to work and again on my way home.
Here's what I remember doing:
Replaced AngryGPS with AngryGPSMod (Then executed the apk in root explorer to install it into the apps list)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1172428
Flashed the CM7 GPS fix
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1199613
Flashed the regional gps data file (I'm in Oklahoma, so mid-south states)
I don't remember where the thread was, you'll need to search for it.
Make sure to use the google supl server settings. You can find them in various ROM threads.
An alternate supl server is the nokia one (worked well for me in Froyo)
Settings are here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=912777&highlight=nokia+gps+settings
[I started with these settings and then changed to the google supl settings, which are working now.]
Use GPS Test to see if it locks onto the birds.
Good Luck
go back to 2.2 they have reliable gps.

Agreed. People keep claiming GB has GPS working reliably, but it doesn't. Even the devs who engineered the current GPS fixes admit they are "half-assed". No slight to the devs, but until Samsung mans up and releases GB for the Vibrant (which they won't because TMO hates us), it's not going to get better. Between this and the battery life, GB is just a toy. Go back to 2.2 like I did.
ODIN to JFD = No - Maybe - Yes depending on who you ask
Custom 2.2 / stock 2.2 = Yes
CM7/MIUI/Trigger = Maybe, not reliable.
If on 2.2 you have issues, the solution posted by digitaltoddy always works for me.
Thanks for the responses. I'm going to try some of the things HeavyA suggested. In case it doesn't work, can you suggest a good rom that runs on 2.2? Thanks again!
The best froyo roms I tried were trigger and project v.
As for my suggestions, the regional GPS flashables are from the HD2 forum.

I've been having the strangest trouble with Google Maps lately, ever since the last update. It seems that most of the world works fine in it, but when I go to where I actually live (central Houston), it refuses to load most of the map squares (some areas are fine, but most of the map is blurry). After I try to load one of the blurry areas by going over it or zooming on it, the app locks up and force closes by itself, either just disappearing, or with a force close window.
I'm running a rooted device with a recent CM7 which hasn't given me any problems up to now. It does the same thing on 4G, 3G, and WiFi on two different WiFi networks. I have tried rebooting the device multiple times, clearing the data for the Maps app, restoring an earlier version of the Maps app through Titanium Backup, and nothing has helped so far. Even stranger, the map in Car Locator seems to work just fine. It's been like this since Friday night.
What makes me wonder if there's a bigger problem is that the exact same thing is happening on my Transformer Pad TF300 tablet, running stock Ice Cream Sandwich.
Any ideas what could be causing this or what to try?
Been in galveston all weekend, passed thru houston and getting ready to head back thru, have had zero issues with killasense

Yes. Latest Maps is screwing up for me also. After selecting a destination i get just a black screen, but the audio works fine in giving me directions. This is on BAMF Forever 1.11. There's a lot of complaints on this version in the reviews.

It would be nice to know more about how you installed gapps, what version of the hdx you are talking about 7 or 8.9 LTE or Wifi. Gmail works fine for me as long as I start it with wifi off. I can turn wifi on once it's open.
Why is gmail such a pain in the balls? I decided to flash gapps rom so I could have some live wallpaper action, after flashing and getting setup I installed gmail. Gmail was working great, then all of a sudden it starts force closing... then i try to restart it and it force closes again. I can turn off wifi and it runs fine. Toggle wifi back on and it immediately force closes. I had it working before where it would stay running when I turned wifi on, but would not start with wifi on. That was when I had installed gapps myself and didn't use this rom. So, don't know what the trouble is... but I'm glad live wallpapers are working now. Of course adwlauncher won't work with widgets anymore, but the live wallpaper continue to run. It seems its always one thing works and another doesn't with this tablet. I'm loving the form factor though. Wish we could get safestrap for the 8.9" too.

It's not the device itself, and it's the combination of fixes installed... I've gotten my kindle to a point where all Google Apps work, including Nova Launcher + working wallpaper.
The only thing I lack is a working Google Play Store that won't disable the Amazon Playstore, and as it's required for Freetime as far as I can tell...
You should check out the latest from ptiwee/crashdump/gsleon3 as it modifies files instead of just replacing them and likely holds the answers for working everything...

I think that is only for the 8.9? I already applied what you are talking about (via tutorial) on the 8.9, which makes the 8.9" pretty great, but still no live wallpapers. Not sure how that was got to work in thor-gapps rom for the 7".
About Gmail on the 7" though. What order did you install to get everything working? Did you flash the gapps rom over stock? Amazon playstore would be nice... but I don't need it at all.
