Hello guys. I'm new to the forums. I bought a samsung vibrant couple of days ago and read about this whole rooting and flashing thing. As a PC Enthusiast i figured this would not be to hard at all to learn.
I finished rooting and backing up my phone and i flashed to the Eugene Gingerbread clone R2 and it's quite fantastic, getting 1200 in quadrant score.
Now i guess my question is, is there anything else i can do to the phone to make it even better as far as quadrant scores go?
Honestly quadrant scores dont really mean anything. I wouldnt even worry about it. High score doesnt mean high performance. I would suggest trying out a couple of different roms and see which one feels the best to you. Some roms run differently on phones. If you havent got to know how to use odin I would look it up and have it ready to go incase something goes wrong.
Yes flash voodoo lagfix
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Im using eugenes ginger clone also... and i also flashed DOW (destroyer of worlds kernel +voodoo 5) and plus the downloaded the oclf app and did another lagfix... quadrants dont matter really, but in ur case, my quadrant is 2600

Learn how to ODIN, make a copy of your internal SD card on your computer in case you exactly screw up your sd card or partition it incorrectly. Then you'll be free to play with it.
But go flash Nero v3 and enable voodoo, best decision you can make.
Honestly, stick with ginger clone R2 or Nero 3, BUT, I would encourage flashing the voodoo kernel. It helps tremendously having the system converted to EXT4.
The DOW kernel is nice if you want to OC your phone and kill battery though.
Yeh i don't really care about Overclock. I just want it to be very stable and smooth and also save some battery life . Thanks for the info guys.
So voodoo lag fix? Do i just flash the voodoo over what i have now?

put the VOODOO in your SD Card, boot into Clockwork Recovery, click INSTALL FROM ZIP, find your voodoo file.
After its finished and starts rebooting, the reboot will take longer than usual, because its converting your whole system into ext4, and it WILL tell you how long before completetion theres a voice, Linda, who will tell you whats going on, and the whole process should NOT take more than 10 minutes, i say 10 because once it took my phone 10, but now it takes me 2-3
should be done in atleast 5 minutes, but maximum of 10 minutes.
Enjoy Voodoo. Ask more questions if you need help.

I would do some reading up before doing the lagfix. I DO agree adding it to the ROM is fantastic as you can see by my sig but I have also completely messed up an installation by installing Voodoo (got stuck in a never ending app force close). Not by any means the developers faults as I just didn't do all of my research.

^ Yes, please do as he says as well.
Lagfixes, SPECIALLY Voodoo and DoW(if you don't know what it is, don't mess with it, it got me soft bricked 3 times on my own fault )
Ginger Clone supports Voodoo, but if you do it wrong, it will put you into a bootloop.
Just follow my instructions above and it should go well.
Again, if any questions just ask i have nothing else to do over the christmas break...
Well you guys are quite awesome and very helpful . Yeah i will read into it a little more and also think a lot about the directions that you gave me.
I will let you know how it goes when i do decide to install voodoo.
Do NOT do VOODOO +Oclf voodoo changes you to ext4 whereis oclf makes ext2 bind points on your internal SD card choose one or the other, both are easy to use and safe if you follow instructions and read read read

I was going to boot voodoo using recovery app which i'm more comfortable doing. I will be downloading the 5.0.1 version and making sure it is named update.zip, well in my case since i have windows 7, just "Update".
Boot using recovery mode and select update.zip and let it do its thing, sound correct guys?
Going to do some more reading, nevermind for the time being. there seems to perhaps be different voodoos or something. like Voodoo+ etcs
which voodoo version is working well with Eugene R2?
Nevermind, retard me . i would DL the JL4+Voodoo b/c Eugene Rom is JL4 Based, DUH!
Ok well guys. i flashed Voodoo JL4. Seems to be running more smoother. Hopefully battery life will still be ok. Ill let you guys know.

I noticed something since i updated to JI6 while using Clockwork recovery. while on JFD i was able to do a backup using the following steps:
HOW TO MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP *ALWAYS BACKUP BEFORE YOU FLASH A NEW ROM
1 - Open Rom Manager
2 - Click on Flash Clockwork Recovery (you can skip this if you have already flashed the recovery before)
3 - Click on "Reboot Into Recovery"
4 - At the prompt, click "ok" to reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery
5 - If this is your first time, you may be at the stock recovery on the Vibrant. Thats normal. Click on "reinstall packages" (ALSO: Volume up and down navigate, and power is used to select an item).
6 - Now, you are at ClockworkMod's Recovery. Scroll down (volume down), to "Nandroid" and select it (power button).
7 - Click on Backup. It will run it's course. After it finishes just reboot.
8 - You now have something you can always fall back on in case you F up. Thank Koush and all the testers.
Now when i tried to do a backup on JI6 i no longer see Nandriod option all i see is "backup and restore". is this normal? has anyone else noticed this? will impact the backup/restore process?
That might not be a JI6 thing. Koush just updated rom manager. Thats most likely the reason.

when i select "check for rom updates" it says that i am not set for OTA and i need to contact dev.
Your all good bro! Thats the same version Im running and I just checked, I dont have NANDROID anymore either. That was all part of the recent update I guess.
As for the second question, ROM updates is talking about the actual ROM the phone runs off of, You know like ECLAIR 2.1, or Eugenes or Sombionix's roms. Not the ROM manager APP. The APP will let you know when it needs to be updated, it checks what version you are running versus what the latest version availible is everytime you open it.

what about flashing to a old clockworkmod? or is there no need to? i just want to make sure that when i backup i will not have any issues if i need to restore..
one more Q. any particular way to name the backups? i know there is not that much room to be specific with the name.

well answer my own question, i reflashed clockwork to 2.5.1.1 & 2.5.1.0 and the nandroid option still does not come up only "backup & restore"....
anyone on the best way to name your backups? not that much room to be specific.
if you choose to back up from ROM manager you can name it whatever you want. Just go into Rom manager, tap backup current rom, when the little box pops up click it and change the name to whatever you want. It will automatically boot into clockwork mod and take care of the back up for you. let it finish, patience is critical whenever flashing anything or backing anything up. And your done. You will now have a complete backup you can use when the going gets tough. Are you running a stock vibrant?

Dont worry, you wont screw anything up, all four of those choices wipe everything and flash a kernel. My suggestion is to flash bionix1.9.1 with JAC's OC/UV kernal. its pretty sweet. Stay away from voodoo right now. No offense, but your not ready yet. VOODOO really can F*%k your stuff up if you dont disable it before flashing other stuff. Trust me, once you start flashing you will never be happy! LOL Thats how i started.

No need to disable lagfix it will get wiped and reformatted. However I did see a way to do it, but i dont use them so i dont know how its done. The whole point of backing up is so you can get back to where you were in case something goes wrong or yu dont like what you see. As far as one click lag fix (OCLF) and voodoo go, its like night and day. VOODOO is INSANELY fast. ALL THE TIME. but they are truely different approaches at the same goal. But for now i reccomend you stay away from voodoo.

No, it definitely hasn't moved my stuff to my memory card...
It converts the /data partition on your phone to EXT4, which is a far superior file system than RFS, which the phone would otherwise use. This increases your disc I/O speed and makes the phone run smoother.
So is it better then the lag fix that I have now which is the Ryan lag fix from the app that's on the market. The voodoo is on that app but I'm not sure if its a better one especially that its found in the settings under kernal. And I don't have any knowledge about changing rge kernal.

In order to use the Voodoo lagfix you must have a kernel that is compatible with Voodoo. Voodoo is something that you must read about and research before toying with it. I would suggest you go here and read about it. The OCLF app you are using gives you the option to update your kernel to a Voodoo compatible one and installs the Voodoo lagfix; it will also back up your current Kernel. Hope this helped a little. The only downside of Voodoo is that anytime you want to flash a new ROM or kernel or any flashable zip folder you pretty much need to disable it to prevent damage from occurring.

Lag Fix, PLEASE HELP!!!!!
Hey guys,
Im fairly noob
This is my issue
Bought samsung vibrant i9000m
Unlocked it
Rooted it
NOW i want to lag fix.
So, i update the firmware to froyo 2.2 using kies, everything went fine. Then i installed OCLF, but i always get an error saying that there is not enough space in /data to complete this fix
So, i now know that it is talking about the internal sd. Tried to erase as much as i could, but i could only get to around 815megs free, and according to other posts, i would need at least 1.5 gigs.
Erased everything i could ( apps, samsung default apps that come with 2.2 etc)
Still not enough space
SO.....
Tried to use voodoo
The install process says to simply download the file, put it in the internel sd card`s root and rename it 'update.zip' ( yes made sure it was not update.zip.zip) then reboot in recovery and select ' apply update.zip'.
So i did.
I ALWAYS get this ANNOYING error 'signature verification failed, installation aborted'
At this point i want to smash my phone on the ground...but i didn't, cuz i know someone can help
CONCLUSION: im on froyo 2.2, i want to lag fix with either OCLF OR VOODOO, witch ever can work. Please remember i am still a noob, so i cant really try to flash anything using odin yet...
Baseband: JL2.
PLEASE HELP ME FINALLY LAG FIX THIS PHONE!!!!

As far as I know DoW is a kernal not a rom. Make sure it will work with whatever your current rom is. Working great flashed over nero5.
I would odin back to stock, flash custom froyo rom then kernal....
By chance did you have lag fix disabled?......works fine with nero 4.1 and 5 for me.....but I found nerov5 works great without it

Also remember that not all phones will handle the oc'd kernels
if you can get into recovery, you can try flashing a different kernel or reflashing your rom.
I'm currently running Bionix oc/uv and love it.
I DID undo the lagfix before flashing this.
If I could get a link to the stock odin files to flash so I could give the amazing sounding DoW a shot, I'm sure I could get it working.
Im running DoW 1.3 on AxuraJL5, and it does the same thing. i often have to pull the battery for a successful reboot. its sucks, but ive learned to live with it
wrong section to post this in, not to be a drag but its just that these forums can get clogged up with stuff like this if we dont keep posts in order. Q&A or under the DoW thread would suffice.

well in short if you dont, when ur phone hangs.. pull the battery. with the bat. out hook it up to ur comp with odin running... as ur holding down the vol. up and down buttons stick in the batt. then you will be in download mode. then flash back to JFD
Maybe im wrong but isn't the dow kernel for 2.2. Didn't he say he was on bionix and isn't that a 2.1?

you are correct, i missed that he stated he was using bionix. OP there is your problem, you flash a 2.2 kernel with a 2.1 rom. flash back to stock via my instructions and you willl be fine.

after you flash back to stock you of course are going to want to root your phone again, then youre going to want to go to team whiskey and download Nero... a 2.2 rom that works with the kernel. then you will want to flash DoW. I would also consider downloading setcpu because that kernel will drain the heck out of your bat. make sure you dont set to boot with setcpu, and just use the conservative setting.
team whiskey http://teamwhiskey.com/DownVibrant.html
again make sure its a 2.2 rom.
DoW works with any Nero (2.2) Team Whiskey Rom. You have to disable Vodoo LF before flashing, otherwise you will get stuck in a boot loop. Make sure to let the Rom run for a few minutes after flashing before replacing the kernal. You can always pull a logcat to see what your phone is doing when it hangs.

Very fist, I wanna say thanks a million to all the replies and help. :-D
Ok...now...to set the record straight, my phone just tries to boot to the DoW and does nothing after. It just hangs.
Yes. I was running a 2.1 rom (Bionix) with a 1.2ghz oc, the uv kernal and the voodoo lagfix (which WAS DISABLED before flashing) but I thought I did everything right. If I had known that switching from a 2.1 rom to a 2.2 rom would have been this much more involved than I thought, I might have reconsidered...lol
I did a Nandroid backup using clockworkmod prior to doing anything else. I got to the red recovery (not 100% sure how I did it, to be honest) and tried to flash my backup and it didn't work.
I'm going to try the previous post about flashing back to stock, then doing the DoW flash but that's kind of a last resort. I'd like to not wipe my data, nandroid, etc before flashing but it's kinda whatever at this point since my phone doesn't work at all right now...lol
Thanks once again all of you!!! This is what makes Android what it is.
I feel like an ass. Normally things like this don't slip by me. I tested myself and it ran fine, but I never thought non voodoo users would have issues.

Most of you probably know this already, but I'd like to add that you should flash 2.6, then flash 2.7.1 to get it to work properly. Do NOT flash the 2.7.1 update after the 2.7 update.
Edit: This relates to non-voodoo users. I'm not aware if voodoo users had problems or not
So I'm nonvoodoo. Is there anything I should worry about?
edit: I'm dumb. I read that wrong. but I don't think I am having problems. What is it I should look out for?
Sooo... I flashed 2.7 then 2.7.1 with CW3 (before I referred back to this thread) and I do not have a problem that I am aware of. Was the issue only with non-voodoo?
The only issue I had is when I tried to reflash the EB16 voodoo kernel again (after 2.7.1 flash)... it aborted. But, I rebooted and all is well.
Outside of that, the only other issue I've had, and this was with 2.6, 2.7 and now with 2.7.1, Launcher Pro fc's during or just after media scanning/start-up... but when it restarts after that, it works great.
def
I just flashed 2.7 and I don't have any problem, I'm nonvoodoo also, however I'll notify you if something happens

Reboot once.
Boot back to recovery and restore your nandroid, or flash a new rom.
Once again, very sorry for the whole mess.

This instance of issues with superclean is really odd as with my experience with all your superclean releases not once did i encounter any major problem. Your prompt action to provide fixes and updates to those affected shows profesionalism. Thank you Sir.

I for one was able to flash 2.7.1 without issue. Thanks for all your hard work & dedication.
I was on 2.5 voodoo upgraded to 2.6 with no problem and today just flashed to 2.7.1 only doing the wipe data, cache, dalvik about 3 times each with no problems. On Eb01 kernal as well.
Adryn you are awesome. I follow you on twitter and here and I love your Roms. You don't need to apologize for anything sometimes bad things just happen. Keep up the awesome work.
Being a parent myself I know its hard taking care of kids and being able to dev. I hope your daughter is doing ok and note good things come to those who wait

I am very, very sorry.
Anyway, enough grovelling from me.

I don't think you have any reason to grovel. Mistakes can happen, and anyone doing this knows the risks. Family and personal life always take priority. I've been flashing your roms since m2d2 for the i910, it would take a lot to make me lose faith in your work. Thank you for all of your hard work, you are truly a gentleman and a scholor. And now I'm done cluttering your thread :-D

Thank you adrynalyne
Trust me adrynalyne, you have nothing to worry about. I have had 4 phones (all Android). I have used your roms for all the phones. you develop great roms and explain in layman's term. I can't thank you enough. Looking forward to your future projects.
+1 ....don't sweat it at all.
Adrynalyne, you have put a TON of time and effort into all this stuff, and I am nothing but grateful. Without your work, my wife's fascinate would be...well, less than desirable. With it, I have to question my decision to go with the Droid Inc!
Hey, we take risks using ROMS, and that's just how it goes sometimes. But the reward far outweighs the risk!
Thanks again for all your hard work, and for helping out this community. I think I can speak for the collective (dare I?) when I say that.

Adrynalyne Thank you for all your hard work. I didn't have any issues and have had very little with all of your Roms. Don't be so hard on yourself **** happens
Grateful to have such great Dev as yourself
Theres another way of restoring instead of doing full odin. Just boot into recovery. Plug the phone to computer and start adb.
use this command:
adb push "name of rom" /sdcard
after its done. Just go back and flash the working rom from recovery. Much safer and easier than using ODIN. Anyway.. I have been using android phones for a long time and stuff like this happens ..
I have SC 2.7 Voodoo. All rights. All works fine.
Just a one, is a gps fix, like Vanila. Gps bad works. And more localizations for the other countries, like kaoss build and vanila too. We have only eng and spain. But this phone Have many people of world. WZ don't know this! But you can do it!
Big thanks to you for your works!

Special Request
Can you put non-voodoo kernel in base ROM?
I finally got a smartphone about a week ago. I was so excited to root my phone and mess around with it. I figured it would be super easy because of so many people doing it, but I was wrong. WHERE THE F*** DO I START. Why is this sheet so god dam complicated. Everywhere I go it tells me to download this, download this, instill this but they never go into detail how or why. I finally found and easy way but it said I cant do it with Froyo. So basically what im asking for is a step by step explanation on how to root a Samsung Fascinate on Froyo.
If I'm not mistaken, the file here is a one-click root method. Run that, and after that, you just boot into recovery by holding the three buttons when it's off, choose to wipe data, choose to wipe cache, and choose to wipe Dalvik cache, then flash the zip for the ROM you want.
It's not terribly hard to understand if you read around a bit. What I linked to is a sticky. There are a lot of guides that explain it well enough. You just need to use your head a bit. Not everything is gonna hold your hand every step of the way.
What see you rooting for?...rooted apps? Custom rom/kernel? Both?
The reason I ask is if you are gonna run a custom rom, most of them give you root access just by flashing the rom and makes rooting prior too rather pointless.
If however your just looking for root access for rooted apps...ie titanium backup just use super one click...I believe it is located in the sticky the previous poster replied...if not just search around for it...there are stickies in the general and development section that should be able to get your feet off the ground

Question: What is EB04 ? I only know EC09, EB01, ED01,ED04, ED05 modem but I had never heard about EB04 modem
I honestly had like 20 tabs open with a whole bunch of random sites on how to root my phone. That was one of them and it didnt work. If you go to the first link it takes you to the one click root. I did this and it didnt seem to work. I read on another site that said it doesnt work if you have Froyo. I think im gonna try again tho.

If the super user icon is there your rooted...an easy way to tell is just do a search on the market for rooted apps..install one...like titanium backup and see if it gets root access, but for the most part if you see the little an android with the skull and cross bones your rooted.
If you want to run a voodoo kernel so you can use the voodoo control app for better sound, I would do a little research on what rom/kernel you would like to run...obviously voodoo but which one? I would recommend going comm rom (ukb)
I can send you some links for the stuff you'll need and how to go about doing it but there are some great posts on how to do it already when I get to my pc I'll see if I can find you some good links to get you started
