[Q] Question and need help. - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Gang! I did some searching and couldn't find my answer so I need some help please. I have the Vibrant (tmo). I did the one click root and then installed Ginger clone final R2. All worked well but then I noticed I could not get back into Clockwork recovery to try another ROM. So... I found the thread explaining how to get back to factory firmware. I did that. Now when I try to Odin, Im no longer able to get the phone to the download screen. I was able to re root with the One Click Root and that worked but I still can not access Clockwork recover or the Download mode or anything to get a ROM on. I guess Im just not doing something or Im a noob idiot. That being said... call my an idiot and walk me through to fix this mess.
Thank you in advance

To get back to download mode try to
1.take off battery
2.run odin as administrator
3.plug in usb cable
4.hold the volume keys and while you are holding them plug back the battery

From any screen hold pwr button and vol up and vol down....keep holding untill you see the vibrant boot screen then release all at the same time. That will rake you to recovery if the reinstall pkgs option is there just click it. You may have to do this twice in order to get into clockwork recovery. Do this with the phone unplugged. hope this helps

First questions in question section. Second when on the blue screen go to reinstall packages that will take you to the green recovery screen. You may have to click reinstall a second time. Third the easiest way to download is to make sure your phone is off. Plug usb into phone only. Press and hold both volume buttons while still holding them plug other end of usb into computer.

The way I get to recovery is with the phone off I
1.hold down volume up and down also the power button
2.when you see the vibrant screen keep holding all thee
3.you will c the vibrant screen one more time when you do stop holding power but keep holding the volume keys
4.then hit reinstall packages...you might have to hit it more than once

I did notice that when I reverted back to factory, It actually was not the firmware I had before all this. I had JI6 and when I did the revert it was JE8. Im lost. LOL

Adb reboot download . or if u can still boot up download emulator from market and type reboot download .. if still doesnt work u might need to sauter a jig to get u in download mode

OK.... I downloaded terminal. Then reboot download. That worked, so I loaded up Odin, loaded the files and it failed. Then I just rebooted the phone and now I have a black screen with an icon in the middle of a cellphone and computer with an orange explaination mark in between them. Am I hosed?

Easiest way, after you have odin'd back to stock and rooted your phone.
Download the app Rom Manager for the market.
The first thing you need to do once Rom Manger is installed is copy the rom you want to flash to your internal SD card.
Then Start Rom Manger.
The first time you use Rom Manager is select the top menu item "Flash ColockworkMod Recover" and select your phone in this case I am assuming "Samsung Vibrant"
After the flash completes select "Install Rom from SD card".
It is fairly self explanatory from there.
Good luck.

Ok first, as stated before questions go in QA section no development.
to access CWM Recovery you may have to keep the update.zip file in internal SD card root
Odin is different
power off the phone, pressing volume up+down at the same time (don't touch power or you will keep going into recovery) until you get on download mode. (different than recovery).
Plug USB, ready to odin
When ODIN back to original, be SURE to check Re Partition and load the pit and phone files.

Thank you Dave! I was using Rom Manager with failed attempt, however Im game for another try. As soon as I get back to stock, I will give it another go. Cross your digits!

I do not know why this is so difficult now. I got back to an unwanted factory rom. I rooted the phone, put the new rom on the internal mem card. Downloaded Rom Manager. Installed Clockwork. Selected Install ROM from sdcard. Selected the rom and it rebooted to the original recovery (blue and yellow). No signs of Clockwork recovery (green). Now I have a rooted phone with an umwanted fatory rom and can install any other rom on it.

This sounds like a problem I was having for awhile. After installing clockwork mod it would only reboot to the standard recovery screen. I had to install update.zip again from this screen several times and eventually it stopped asking me for this step and started to boot clockwork mod properly.

Just keep your CWM update.zip file in the root of the internal SD Card
Now if you installed Froyo leaked rom stock, and the Recovery now on top says 3einstead of 2e, then you need to fix that, look for the thread to convert 3e to 2e otherwise CWM won't work anymore. you need to be rooted and have root explorer or know how to use either adb or terminal

Well.... I have no idea what I did but it is now working. I tried everyones suggestions so Im unsure what did what. I want to thank everyone for their help and quick response's. I was actually expecting to get bashed about searching and being a noob etc. After seeing some of the other posts, Im surprised I didn't. Thanks again for making it easy to reply and explain what I was doing and what was going on. I have a new outlook about XDA.

So is my Vibrant bricked?

I partitioned my SD card using ROM Manager, turned the phone off and got a black screen with lit keys. So, I read around and was told to use ODIN to reflash the stock TMO build, so I did. Now, Im getting the TMO logo and Galaxy S screen, but I get a black screen still.
I cannot get into download mode. I vol - and power and I get the Vibrant logo, then it goes back off. Even when plugged it, I get the batt charging animation, then back to the Vibrant screen.
I tried to push the update.zip to the SD card through ADB, but I get a permission denied message, meaning the root was killed.
So, is this phone pretty much screwed? I cant think of any other way to get it going outside of moving the update.zip to the sd card by a 3rd party measure i.e card reader/another phone
dude that's not even close to a brick as the phone is still responsive somehow..
do this:
1. pull out battery wait 5-10secs
2. connect USB to computer and phone
3. hold down the vol +/- buttons
4. plug in battery
5. you should be in download mode now
6. do what you gotta do with ODIN
good luck
Dont use that method to get to DL mode . Do it this way . First turn off your phone , then plug the usb cable into your computer ONLY . Next hold both volume buttons and plug the micro usb into your phone . Also use odin v1.3 and flash the rom of your preference .
Edit : xtone beat me to the punch

Yes using ROM Manager to repartition your phone will create the "soft-brick" you are experiencing. But as one person has already noted, this can pretty much be recovered using ODIN.
Definitely follow the advice given in Posts 2 and 3 of this thread to get into Download mode. If you're not getting the desired results using ODIN, what settings are you using? For example, what are the names of the .pit and .tar files you are using? Did you check or leave unchecked the "re-partition" option?
Sorry for the noobery. Im usually good at this.
Well, I was able to get into download mode and get ODIN to run, but im getting a MBD checksum error when I boot into recovery.
And I cannot install CWM through the market because my Application Storage is at 0.00B for some reason.

What ROM did you flash. You might want to perform a factory reset and then flash the stock JFD ROM and see if that fixes your problem.
Good luck.
Oh this is a nightmare.... exactly what happened to me.
I'll be honest, I tried and tried and tried all sorts of stuff and somehow I got it back reading again.
I would ODIN to Eugenes Froyo that doesn't brick and see where that gets you. Thread is in developers section and I am pretty sure that's what got me back working but follow ALL the instructions. With no application room I couldn't push, unistall, install ect...

That's only needed if he flashed a rom with the wrong kernel or if he flashed a rom without disabling voodoo .

Just get to DL mode as xtone and I stated in post 2 & 3 . Then flashed to JFD with odin v1.3 and click the repartition box in odin and you'll be fine .

I had this problem for the last two days, but I found a way to fix it thanks to a user (whom I don't know the name of)
I did this to go back to stock firmware (JFD), make sure you have that downloaded.
Look for Eugene's Galaxy S Froyo PDA, for the i9000, not the Vibrant. Flash it through Odin with the 512 pit file. It's not going to boot up but take you to recovery mode instead, and it's going to remap your Volume buttons, but you can still get into DL mode (up is now down, and vice versa but whatever)
Now Odin back to stock, using the same 512 pit and there you go! Should boot up with no problem. Now you can redo everything, but remember to never partition through ROM Manager ever again!

His exact symptoms happened to me when the noob in me decided to repartition in Rom Manager awhile back. I am just suggesting he uses this tool as an option. It's definitely a good tool to use regardless of how he got where he got.
something like this happened to a buddy of mine, i'm trying to fix it, but the guy was completely stock so it makes no sense... I've tried everything, and i cant seem to find eugenes files...

OK, I got it fixed. Heres how.
I was finally able to get into ODIN and flash Eugenes Froyo.
So, from there, I was getting an MD5 checksum error when Id try to get into recovery, and I couldnt install the ROM Manager from the Market
Well, upon inspection of a the Nero V3 build I had downloaded, there was a ROMManager.apk there. So I pushed it onto my phone, reflashed to CWR (had to do it about 3 times) and reinstalled Nero V3.
After installing the build, I was able to re-enable voodoo and its theres no more MD5 craziness when I access the Recovery

ODIN'd to JFD and Can't get CWR to Flash? Updated around 7PM

Deleted... if you want a good guide that I made:
Check it out here.
I did ODIN back to Eclair 2.1 last night and was planning to start rooting and flashing roms. Would you suggest me to NOT do it and if so, what should be the plan of action in such cases?
Go for it.. you are not going to hurt anything. Please report back if the guide works as it should, or if CWR does not flash. You will know because when you go to re install packages it will reboot... where it would normally bring you back to the stock recovery and you would press re install packages again.
This is very weird, because i rooted and flashed a new rom/kernel using your guide with my vibrant and it turned out fine.
I tried the exact same thing with my gf's vibrant this morning and got the issue of just rebooting of the phone instead of going into the red Clockwork recovery.
I'm going to try this new update.zip and see if it makes any difference and will post again if it results in a different outcome.
Same thing used to happen to me. Your EDIT (unsure about file because I don't need to try it but deleting old update.zip files) works. For some reason, when I would JFD back it would double the size of the update.zip file. I have one that is 633kb on my computer so i have to delete the doubled one, drag and drop the one on my computer, reinstall packages blah blah blah.....
I have a question.
If I use a different version of the ODIN than the one you have on your guideline. 1.85 vs 1.70 does it make a difference? Can I use the 1.85 version?
No difference
I tried that! I tried to Flash a new rom using ROM MANAGER. When all was done, I came back on Stock Eclair and I can't get into Recovery Mode by pressing Vol Up + Down + Power button anymore! However, I did manage to get into Recovery Mode using CWR and then selected to apply zip updates. My WiFi interent wasn't working before but it seems to be working now. I can't find the option to turn on my 3G internet though!

ok, so I dont know why but this is how i got it working.
On step 5 of the Back to ODIN guide, it states "Now, You could power off, but you do not need to. Hold in both volume buttons and power for a good bit. Do not have the phone plugged into a usb. Once you see VIBRANT, release all buttons."
At this stage, I turned my phone off and then went into stock recovery to reinstall package. So instead of going into stock recovery from when the phone was on, I went into it from when the phone was off. This allowed me to go into CWM recovery.
Give this a shot and maybe it will work for those who are having this issue too too.
^ which update.zip did you use?
If the latter, that makes sense.

I used the one that's on the first post of this topic.
I tried both the old step of booting into recovery from when the phone's on and that didn't work. So I turned off the phone and then went into recovery to reinstall pkg, then it worked.

That's the one that I posted already...
i had to do this a few weeks ago because my update.zip was messed up it would just reboot when i tried to install packages im not sure what happened to it though
I had this problem myself too! I went back to stock JFD twice, once when coming from CM7 back to froyo and another when coming from Asgard to Froyo (this time).
The first time I use a guide from this forum (don't feel like looking for it atm), it was a guide that I used when I first got the phone to root and stuff... it was pretty long. Fortunately, this time I found this thread and the update.zip works, so basically it's way easier this time around. You might have to install twice for it to work... I'll try to explain what I did.
1. Flash back to stock JFD.
2. Download update zip and put on SD card.
3. Power off phone
4. Start in recovery mode.
5. Reinstall packages.
6. Power on phone.
7. Repeat steps 3-5 and when you reinstall packages the second time it should automatically restart into green recovery.
This the way to do it and work always
Flash update1.zip from attachment after you rename it as update.zip
then you will have root.
Then reboot phone in recovery and flash update2.zip after you rename it update.zip and delete the previous one.
http://www.multiupload.com/8ZKCZWI5U7
The 1.72mb update.zip in the OP works when re-installing pkgs. Even when I somehow lost root with other update.zip files, this one still worked for me without ODINing to JFD
the possible fix mentioned worked for me.
Coming back from GB, followed your guide. When I reinstalled packages it rebooted to stock the first time, reinstalled again and went into CWM. Didn't have to mess with the update.zip.

Please help with current root method for fascinate.

Finding all types of different info for this phone. Everything seems fairly old. The phone is on 2.2.1 with ED04. I would be very greatful if someone could shoot me a link to a working method.
Lots of threads I'm finding have dead links as well so I kind of stuck.
Edit, sorry if this is in the wrong section my bad.

Info on rooting this phone is going to be rather old considering just about all the recent roms for the fascinate root the device during the flashing process...if you are just trying to root the phone to obtain super user permission to install certain apps you can use the z4 method or super one click or, what I recommend is to find a rom you would like to flash...comm rom 2.0 for example and see if it contains root access...(comm rom is one example that does just this)..so I guess a question back to you is in order...what are you looking for...root access, custom rom, or both?

Don't be sorry...this is the q and a section !
All you will have to do is download the rom of choice and put it on the root of your sd card...not in a folder, download odin to your pc install any necessary drivers, make sure your pc will recognize your device at this point, and download your cwm file to your pc and save it in the odin folder..(I use the 3-30 fix all file) connect your phone to pc using stock samsung usb cable, pull battery hold the down volume button...this will put you in download mode, once odin sets up a com port, click the pda button and only the pda never click phone. flash your cwm file, when odin is done install your batt and hold volume up, down, and power until cwm appears, (if you let the phone boot fully you will have to re odin since the stock kernel will over write cmw) at this point you will do a factory reset, wipe cache, and go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache then go to install zip from sd, find the rom you put on your sd card earlier and select install zip, if your rom does not contain a kernel you must flash the kernel also prior to your first boot up or you will have to re odin.
I also suggest backing up your contacts via exporting then to sd v card or backing up via g mail...after all is said and done reboot back to cwm via up, down, power button and do a nandroid back up to save you phone as is...just in case! You can always restore back to that point.

Wow thanks a lot for all that man. This would be my 3rd android phone to flash, so I feel pretty confident. But this one just seemed to have a lot more different ways to go about things then previous phones.
So I appreciate you breaking it down for me.
No prob...if you get stuck p.m.me and I'll give more in depth directions but the most important thing is to be patient...it can take 15-20 mins while your phone is loading so don't pull the batt and start over unless you have waited that long..good luck! Once you get the hand if it, its not that hard and our phones are pretty brick proof...I'm sure not completely, but this isn't your first rodeo so if you get into trouble read read read especially the stickies and when in doubt send me a p.m.

Ok cool thanks again and will do. Its actually the wifes phone so I won't be doing it for a couple days probably as shes busy and needs it. I was going to do it last night but kind of got overwhelmed with all the info.

[Q] Can't get into download mode...Bricked the shiz out of my phone.

Soo....I kinda f*cked up my phone. I had Bi-Winning for a while and got bored of it, so I decided to flash another rom. I had it for about 2 hours and decided, I wanna flash another one! I went back in my history and this is terrible, but I cannot remember for the life of me which rom I used. It was either Simply Honey, Crazy 8, or MIUI. I honestly can't remember. Anyway, after that I used ROM Manager to flash Biffmod from my SD Card and after it did that, it went into a bootloop. So I tried to get back into Download mode, but it just kept going to the Vibrant screen. THEN, I tried to use Odin without being in Download mode and I didn't realize the TAR file wasn't completely downloaded, ran Odin and it made it even worse. Now every time I try to use the various methods of getting into Download mode, I come across the screen in the attached photo. It's a weird version of CWM Recovery, it says. v2.5.1.0 SOK ULFK. I cannot get passed this screen and into Download mode no matter what I do. HELP!
It also can't mount my SD card.

If it doesn't work the first time don't panic, sometimes it takes me a couple of times to get it to work. If you still can't get into download mode I see a JIG in your future...

Same thing happened. The battery icon screen flashes and then it goes to this weird CWM. What the eff did I do to my phone?
Why not flash a froyo rom like bionix or project v from the recovery menu.
Another thing - When I try to use CWM to reboot into Download mode, the screen Galaxy S GT I9000 pops up and goes back to CWM. I have the Vibrant, and I'm pretty sure those are two somewhat different phones...Why is mine confused?

Well I assume I'd need to actually have the rom to be able to flash it. And when I try to install zip from SD it's unable to mount the SD card.
Someone please help me, I am getting extremely desperate here.
Generally the Galaxy S GT I9000 screen comes up if you have the Gingerbread bootloader flashed. GB Bootloaders don't use the 3 button combo for Download Mode, all you have to do is press and hold Volume Up + Power.
If that doesn't work try flashing a GB ROM. Sadly there's really no way to tell what file system the phone is using in CMW at least not in the version I have, if you can find out that would help a lot though. Since we don't know what file system it's using I'd recommend using a non-CM7/MIUI rom first. Download one of the non-CM7/MIUI GB roms. Plug the phone into your computer and in CMW go to Mounts and Storage and Mount USB Storage. You should then be able to copy the ROM onto your phone and flash it.
I had problem getting to download mode after flashing ported gt I9000 rom .hold down or up, power and home " button" (one puts in recovery the other in download can't remember which)
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

THANK YOUUUU!!! Oh my goodness. I JUST bought a jig with my gf's card and then I came back to this thread and saw this. Tried it, it worked. Now hopefully I can do the rest without a problem. Thank you again for getting me into download mode.
Word. Glad I could help. The important thing to remember is the Vibrant is a pretty robust phone. It's damn near impossible to brick it so bad you can't recover, so there's rarely any reason to panic. And hey, now you have a JIG on the way just in case you get into some real trouble down the line.

Actually I have one little problem, I am unable to get to CWM Recovery it says there is no update.zip/ "No such file or directory". I need to get going so I'll just leave it as stock 2.1 right now.
Also it's still starting up with the GT I9000 thingy and I just want it back to normal! Haha anyway. Thanks again.
Download the AIO Toolbox, use it to Odin back to stock (the appropriate PIT and PDA files are included with the install), root the phone (again using the AIO Toolbox) and then install ROM Manager and use it to flash CWM.

You seriously deserve some sort of medal. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out.

Please help. Can't escape from stock recovery.

Hey there,
I'm trying to get CyanogenMod on my friend's aging Vibrant. I first rooted, and then I attempted to install ClockworkMod through the stock recovery. At first it just restarted back to the stock recovery, so I installed it again, and boom- CWM. From there, I wiped, went to mount USB storage, and the drive didn't show up on my computer. I figured it needed to be rebooted, so I tried that. This time, it reverted BACK to stock recovery. I figured, okay, all I have to do is flash CWM again. It won't work anymore. I don't know what to do, because I can't flash CWM, a Rom, or even restore the original rom because I can't get into CWM.
Please help!

Okay, I've never had this issue personally, nor have I read of anyone else having a similar issue. However, despite the lack of CWR, you can still restore the device back to stock via Odin. There is a guide on the usage of Odin that can be found here. Download links to the program along with the required .pit and .tar files can also be found in said guide. Once you've got the device restored, you can go through the process of installing CyanogenMod... But, keep in mind that the installation process is going to vary slightly depending on what version of CyanogenMod you wish to install. Are you trying to install CyanogenMod 7 (Gingerbread), 9 (Ice Cream Sandwich), 10 (Jellybean 4.1), or 10.1 (Jellybean 4.2)?
I know about Odin, but I'm on a Mac right now. I was really hoping there was a way around this so I didn't have to install Windows via Boot Camp. I'm planning on installing CM10.

You could use Heimdall, an alternative to Odin that is compatible with OS X. You can download it here.
Now, in regards to the process of installing CM10, you could refer to this video... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812882. Hopefully you won't get that weird CWR issue this time around. Let me know how it goes. :fingers-crossed:
No matter what, I can't get Heimdall to detect the phone. It just says "Failed to detect compatible download-mode device".

Hmm... Perhaps this post might be of some help? Sorry, but I don't own a Mac, nor have I ever personally used Heimdall... So I've never had that issue before. However, a little Google searching uncovered a bunch of threads discussing this exact error. Perhaps a little digging may uncover your answer? Link. Again, best of luck dude.
Can you get back into the stock recovery and transfer files to the internal SD? If so, you need to flash update.zip(attached). It will add a custom recovery. You may need to flash it twice to get it to show up. From there, I would suggest you do the following: 1) wipe user data, cache and davlik(under advanced) 2) reboot recovery, if the stock recovery comes back, just reflash update.zip. 3) Flash whichever ROM you want on the phone, again, may take two flashes.
If you cannot add files to the internal SD, this solution won't work, in which case you'll have to play around a little more. I would suggest, as an alternate method, that you pull the battery and SD card. replace the battery and try to enter download mode. Try using Heimdal One-Click(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278683). It's much easier than using Heimdal or Odin and will flash the Vibrant to stock. View the download mode shortcut below.
Side note: hardware shortcuts help a lot. If you don't know them, they are here:
Hold volume up + volume down + power =
1. When off, boots recovery
2. When on, reboots into recovery
Hold volume up + volume down +plug in computer USB = download mode.
^This is what you use for Odin and/or Heimdal. They won't recognize the device unless it's in download mode.
May also take a few tries.
Let me know how it goes and if you have any questions.
EDIT: You may need to have the phone on the stock ROM to flash that update.zip. I ran into that problem and couldn't figure out why it wasn't working for a long time. Don't update the vibrant to stock 2.2 to use the update.zip.

I already have the update.zip on the phone. I can get into the stock recovery and flash it (it says "replacing recovery with Clockwork" and everything), but every time I attempt to flash it, the phone reboots to the stock recovery. I can't add files to the internal SD because the only options are Reboot System Now, Reinstall Packages, Delete All User Data, and Delete Cache Data"
One-Click doesn't see the phone either. I'm starting to get really worried. Is there some sort of driver or something I need to have installed on the system?
SOLVED!
Alright, I finally figured it out. I'm exhausted, haha.
I finally just bit the bullet and installed Windows. I used ODIN, which was such a breeze. I wish I would have just done that in the first place.
Thanks for your help guys!

Although I had heard of Bay_wolf's AIO Vibrant Toolbox, which is also a one-click software (but only compatible w/Windows), I had never heard of "Heimdal One-Click". This is good to know about, and I've added the program to the The Official XDA Vibrant Bible Thread. I learn something new every day. Thanks!

Great news! You can follow the instructions I wrote out to install a custom ROM from stock. Just put all the files on the internal SD, wipe everything and flash update.zip and then the ROM and gapps.
If you have questions, you may PM me as well.
Good luck!
