romming an unlocked phone? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

question: i have a samsung vibrant that is unlocked and using at&t and i even have 3g lol for some reason....SO, if i were to root and rom my phone (which i have done several times in the past) will it re-lock my phone

No it will not lock your phone back up. I have rooted, rommed, bricked my phone like it was my wife and it stayed unlocked. You actually have to put in your lock code for this.

Seriously, I'm usually the one who thinks people who reply to posts in the wrong section with "WRONG SECTION DUDE!" are assholes, but this needs to STOP! I see at least 5 threads a day posted her that need to be in Q & A. This is quite ridiculous.

2.2.1 Not Today.

Mods Please move if in wrong section.
With that out of the way before I get flamed I just wanted to answer a couple questions that a few have had regarding when we can see 2.2.1 on the Vibrant.
Heathen was kind enough to port 2.2.1 for us back in December but unfortunately some files are missing (most likely having to do with T-Mobile network.) We ran into a problem with getting a soft semi-boot when the signal level reached -80 dBm. That left us with a phone that worked flawless if we didn't need to go outside. Several of us have been searching for the last month or so trying to find the problem to no avail. Tonight I tried something else. I successfully ported a different 2.2.1 rom to my phone and again it is flawless, but again that is if I don't want to leave my house. Same semi-soft-boot at -80 dBm.
Now if anyone wants to jump in and give some insight as to which files need to be changed or added please do. Rest assured though several people are still trying to bring 2.2.1 to you as well as 2.3. When a stable version of either is ready we will gladly post it.

I personaly never brought my phone in for servicing but its simple to unroot once rooted via htc unlock. There's many threads explaining the process. I follow zedomax's tutorials on htcevohacks.com. Go check it out.
Only thing with unroot the HTC method is that it now shows "RELOCKED" instead of "LOCKED". Not sure if they will pick up on that.
Gotcha.. I think I might take the risk. as of now my phone is working good, let's hope it stays that way..
So long as you have a stock ROM when you bring it in for your hardware problems, you should be okay.

[Q] Rooting & ROMS on Evo 4G LTE & Galaxy S3

Hello,
I, like so many others am trying to decide between the Samsung Galaxy S3 & the HTC Evo 4G LTE. One thing that I definitely want is to be able to root and flash ROMS on whichever phone I get. I know that root has been achieved on both phones but I'd like thoughts on developer support between the two, and which one (or both) can be set back to an original state where it's not known it was rooted for warranty purposes. I know HTC lets you unlock the bootloader but unless there's a workaround it'll say relocked on the bootloader allowing anyone savvy enough to check that it's been rooted. Wondering if current root versions are S-on, S-off or either with the owner choosing. Or perhaps S-off is a must in order to truly relock the bootloader so it says locked instead of relocked. I also read in my research that you can trip a counter on the S3 the counts how many ROMS have been flashed... Although I also read it's possible to root without tripping the counter but if anything goes wrong, you can't reset the counter.
Now, it seems like the S3 would have the most dev support since it's been released globally but I'm assuming that the ROMS developed for the global quad core version won't be compatible with the dual core US version. Is this correct? Is there Evo dev community really committed so that I could expect similar work being done for both phones?
Lastly, I'm assuming that the S3 will have more accessories available for it given its release on 5 US carriers without any changes in the phone... Seems like a first for any phone but the iphone. Do you agree with this or do you expect lots of accessories and aftermarket items available for the Evo LTE as well.
I know that there's a lot of questions in this but with the phones being so similar, this may be the area that differentiates them. And I know that I definitely want to root the phone... No question on that.
Thanks so much in advance for any and all advice, info and help you can give. I appreciate it so much!

Sorry, the forum description said rooting questions go in that forum... So sorry I misunderstood and thanks for moving to the appropriate forum.

New, but willing to do the work. Q re: Root for Gs3 sch-i535

I have never rooted a device before, and have searched and spent many hours reading before deciding to post. I apologize in advance if you feel these questions have been answered. I have watched the new member video and read all the rules for posting. Hopefully, I have not broken any.
To the point:
1)If I root my gs3 ( Verizon carrier) will that allow me to run a similar ROM like the nexus 7?
2) The goal I am trying to accomplish is to have my gs3 run, operate and look like my nexus 7 running 4.2:laugh:
Is this even possible?
Fyi I am a plumber by trade, I like tinkering with things, but have never ventured into cyber/code land before. But after my nexus 7 omg these things are amazing.
Thank you for reading and perhaps responding to my questions

If your phone is a dual core version from the US then you're in the wrong forum mate..You need to go there to get all the help you need. http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1708..
But if you have a i9300 or i9305 then you can root your phone using odin and chainfire's CF root then just download any custom rom and enter recovery by pressing Home + Volume up + Power..
When you're done playing you can download a stock rom made for your phone use triangle away to get rid of the counter and go back to the way it came from the factory.. If you've done your research you will know where all the items i just listed is..
But remember if you've a dual core version you need to go to the other thread. You will brick your phone if you use anything from here..

Newb here! verizon note 2

Hello!
I am a complete newb to rooting and just bought a used verizon note 2 that was already rooted with cleanrom 4.2.5 ace (lucky me!). I really don't understand all the technical jargon so looking for some answers from you smart folks
1. Do I need to know anything about updates? I know I'm not supposedto accept OTA updates from verizon, anything else?
2. Is there a way to get the wireless tethering app for root users (green wifi symbol) working? I am on unlimited data and tether a lot. I use the built in hotspot since cleanrom unlocked that but it doesn't seem as reliable as wireless tether was on my old rooted tbolt, but unfortunately the app isn't working on this phone
3. is there a setting or app to get a stronger LTE signal and is there an app to force 4G to stay on like the thunderbolt has?
4. what are some other cool features of this rom?
this phone is amazing with cleanrom I love the battery life especially coming from the tbolt. thanks for any guidance here
