I came across this thread in the HD2 forum, it is an app for a software sidebar-styled soft keys for the hd2. Downloaded and tested on a rooted nook and it works brilliantly! This seems to be a great replacement for not having hardware keys for back/home/search/so on... Here is the link to the original thread and the apk I used is attached below. All credits go to the developer of this app jerryfan2000.

This is great. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks. I actually prefer this to softkeys (though really appreciate the effort on softkeys!) Also, you can install this via the market - just search for "button savior", and then you'll be notified of any updates...
I'm a convert from Softkeys to this ( button savior). It's not as easy to accidentally press the shortcut button. Also doesn't require any setup to make it function as it should.
Wow...I liked Softkeys and really appreciate the hard work of the dev...but like this more. Especially because it seems to work great in landscape. Thanks for the post!
Sent from my Nooxus One using Tapatalk
I'm using Zeam launcher. In landscape mode, the little arrow is directly on top of the dock icons. Really wish if we can configure the position separately between portrait and landscape mode.
I sent a pm to the dev asking if it would be possible to add an option to set the position of the dock. Maybe using sliders for horizontal and vertical positioning. The app is great though and is really streamlined with the rest of the interface imo. Glad I could help.
This thing is fantastic. Almost like it doesn't exist, until you need.
Yes, and..
Much better than SoftKeys (less obtrusive). Also, the developer of SoftKeys doesn't seem to be responding to issues raised!
I just talked to the developer, jerryfan2000...the next release should hit the market in a day or so and will include the ability to choose the placement of the sidebar using sliders. Seems he was already on top of it, and is just waiting for some graphics to be finished.
This is awesome, head and shoulders above the softkeys for me.
Thanks man, this is great.
Latest version is out. 1.0.5. Button saviour. You can move the button now. Although slightly limited to where.
Love the minimal UI. It's practically invisible.

MortButtons is around since about 4 years, but since there's quite some hype recently about both "touch-able" menu systems like Spb Menu or TouchCube and "click-through" button enhancers like HButton, maybe MortButtons might be interesting for some people, too.
It offers all required ways to launch a menu entry (press app button multiple times and wait for timeout, direction pad, tapping the entry), allows freely configurable items for up to 5 main menus (any number of entries and sub menus; don't believe old sites telling about an entry limit, it doesn't exist since years...), includes a task list (like Alt-Tab), offers many "special" entries (system settings, new documents, calls, new messages, screen rotation, ...), is skinnable, free (though donations would be nice), ...
V2.5 compared to V2.41 mostly adds some "facelifts" (new icons and skins, alpha channel support, images as icons for entries, user defined backgrounds, ...) and better performance, but also some new features like finger gestures and access to the system settings.
More informations, download, manual, etc. is available here.
(Screenshot shows TransAqua1 (new default) skin with Spb's Snowy theme as background, icons are "GlassIcons" .png images available in Rotlaus' forum intended for rlToday).
Wow, Thank you so much for such a wonderful software. I just started using Mortbuttons just a few weeks ago and like it very much.
I have made a skin that goes well with the Touch look and would like to share it.

Yeah, it's only a pity it's still some kind of insider tip while around for years, while similar concepts realized in the last few months make such a fuzz...

Thanks. Btw, it's also possible to create a skin with bigger tiles like the original TouchCube style. You can use any size for the menu entries you like, as long as MortButtons manages to fit at least one entry on the screen...
Nice Mort! I'll try it and give you some feedback
By the way, can I include this on a ROM ?
Thanks for great work, I was using previous version and this is even better. Keep it this way.
Just updated my skin to take advantage of the alpha layer.
Thanks again Mort for all your wonderful stuff.

Nice one, tough the alpha layer isn't very obvious.
Little hint: Zip only the folder contents itself (i.e. no subfolder in the archive), then change the file extension from .zip to .mbz. Having to copy only a single file makes skin installation a bit more easy for beginners. And it saves some space, though usually more by better cluster usage than by compression (most images already are compressed...).

Very nice update, the launch time seems to be much less. There does seem to be a bit of a memory leak? But not sure how to pinpoint if its cuz of MortButtons or something else. Nevertheless, it is a very nice, free, and actually more powerful alternative to other touch/launcher kinda applications.
Also a fan of MortScript (for small, useful tasks) and MortPlayer (THE audio player for winmobile ). Do you have a smartphone version of MortPlayer planned?
VGA & icons pixelization
Hi,
I just tried on my VGA PDA (Dell Axim X51v), and application icons which are VGA-enabled, appear pixelized in MortButton. Any idea on what I did wrong?
Great work Mort. I've been using mort buttons since about the day after I got my vario II 16 months ago. It was the ideal solution to the missing capabilities I had always presumed a touch screen device would come with by default!
I much prefer it to all of these today screen launchers as these seem to slow down the phone and generally use smaller, less usable buttons for my sausage fingers!
One thing I've noticed though, the new built in shortcuts to the control panel options don't seem quite right. e.g. I've added a shortcut to the Memory control panel on a menu. Having launched the Memory panel, the only way to close it is by pressing the 'ok' button on the top right of the screen - neither OK button works....
Alternatively, if I add a .lnk shortcut which starts the memory panel (with the shortcut "Settings>System>Memory>Main = 20#ctlpnl cplmain.cpl,4") the panel launches fine and can be closed with the OK buttons no problem.
The same goes for Input, Phone, Today panel shortcuts...
I was wondering if MortButtons is not closing properly after launching these settings links?
Apart from this quibble, a great update. Keep up the good work - I'd have binned this phone long ago if it wasn't for this App!!
MortButton and FTouchFlo
Thanks Mort for a great app. I was wondering what is the command line to launch each of the buttons. I was trying to use this in conjunction with efrost's FTouchFlo app where I assigned a gesture like leftright app to launch button 1 by putting the path "\Program Files\MortButtons\Button1.mbi" but that did not launch button1 when gesturing. Would you happen to have a solution?

I experienced the same. But if you link to the 'Button.exe'. It will bring you to the main menu where you can see the 5 buttons. While this is one more step extra, better than nothing.
^ What you guys are trying to do works fine here.
For e.g. go to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs\MortButtons and see how the shortcut for button 1 is created (if you have a good file explorer such as gsfinder you can see the shortcut as well as the command line parameter).
Basically the shortcut should point to \Program Files\MortButtons\MBRunner.exe and the command line parameter should be \Program Files\MortButtons\<path_to_button>.mbi. Both of these paths should be put in Ftouchflo config without quotation marks around. This makes for a much faster, customizable and full featured launcher than the cubes.
Thanks. That did the trick!

Once again for dummies. You mean:
LeftRightApp:\Program Files\MortButtons\MBRunner.exe
LeftRightAppCmdLine:\Program Files\MortButtons\Program Files\MortButtons\Button3.mbi?
I tried:
LeftRightApp:\Program Files\MortButtons\MBRunner.exe
LeftRightAppCmdLine:\Program Files\MortButtons\Button3.mbi
but it didn't work, it shows an empty "MortButton" window.
Maybe you need to use quotes around the parameter (i.e. mbi file). Otherwise it might be MortButtons tries to load "\Program" as menu informations, which doesn't quite work...
The exact method that you've listed works for me. Are you using the latest version of ftouchflo? I remember one of the versions had a bug in the leftright swipe..
Where can I find soft-reset function and it's Icon so that I can put it on the Mortbutton. Annoying each time wanna do soft reset have to tuck the stylus in the hole.
Hi all,
I had an idea for a better keyboard for the streak, but I can't find any step-by-step walkthroughs for making android keyboards. If there's one available, let me know and I should be able to tackle this.
If not, I think the streak needs a split keyboard. Imagine the left half of the keyboard on the left third of the screen, the right half on the right third, and a big numpad/d-pad in the middle third. When I'm typing in landscape mode, I know I'd appreciate minimizing my thumbs' reach.
Any takers? Or good keyboard making tutorials?

Great Idea!
If someone does make one you should add settings so you can control where the DPAD is, so you could make it like the original Dell Keyboard too!
I'm guessing you've not tried swype then?
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
While we're on the subject of thumb reach, might I suggest a portrait keyboard with more keys on the left/right side, so you don't constantly mis-type those O's and P's as a leftie (for example), when using the streak one-handed?
I was thinking of a real multitouch keyboard.
First, you have the standard qwerty keyboard, with shift, enter en dpad buttons. A tab button would be cool too.
Second, if you tap and hold the keyboard (anywhere) and slide it to the left, on the right side it will reveal the nummeric keys, where you can input your numbers. Releasing the keyboard and it'll slide back in position. Slidng the other way around, gives other keys.
I'm dreaming of such a keyboard a long time now.
Someone?

Hi guys- I don't know of any tutorials, but basically you need to create a custom IME (that's the term used by Android SDK). There is an android SDK example for creating an IME I believe. Also, here is the source code for a Latin keyboard IME someone made:
http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/packages/inputmethods/LatinIME.git;a=summary
+1 to the initial idea.
Myself and my office mate were just discussing UI's and both of us agreed that a split keyboard option would make the streak far more ergonomically friendly and probably speed up typing.
BTW, for mocked up examples of what we are talking about see:

I would really love to see a keyboard like this!
Dell's 1.6 stock keyboard makes good use of the additional space instead of just making the buttons ridiculously large, but it really should be symmetric.
With smartphones getting larger and tablets on the rise it's high time for new keyboards, so I think not only the Streak would benefit from it!
All thumbs up for the idea!
Here's an idea: find a developer and start up a kickstart for this... Perhaps we could post this to the general android development forum.
Basic Version
Hey all,
Here's a basic version. It's just a slightly modified version of the soft keyboard that comes with the SDK. It's only usable it in landscape mode, unless you have really small fingers.
Any thoughts/ideas/feedback? Basic changes may be within my ability. A lot of the programming is way over my head, so if anyone wants the source to do some fancy stuff, let me know.

Works fine i would just prefer the buttons to be a bit bigger about double the size infact and would like the numbers on the end and not in the middle and the numbers a different colour but thats me other than that a great start thanks
Awesome! Some color / shading might help to distinguish between the letters and numbers and more easily find keys. May be its something you adjust to but i find myself having to search for letters.
Two other layout thoughts. 1) maybe stretching out the spacebar a bit. since thats a frequently pressed key it'd be nice to have it by the other letters and closer to the thumbs., 2) rearranging the numpad to have the zero at the bottom center as with a typical dialer numpad. This would require splitting the spacebar into two segments.
Just my 2 cents.

Here's the current state of things (as of the build above). I'm going to look more into changing the color of the number keys, but I don't think it's really as necessary with this layout. Any and all suggestions are welcomed, and I will let you know what I can/can't/will/won't do.

I have definitely seen the same issue. I will take a look at the source, but if anyone has the SDK and has a good eye for troubleshooting code, feel free to post hints.
EDIT: Per the suggestions, I downloaded and can confirm it seems pretty amazing. A big learning curve though, doesn't seem intuitive. Working on that.
I Really would like to start using this app, but the permissions seem crazy to me. Everyone's thoughts? Am I just paranoid? The developer seems very legit and know's whats up... fan of XDA too... so, probably nothing, but I am so skeptical when an app needs so much (though, given the power of the app, it sorta makes sense)
This application has access to the following:
Services that cost you money:
directly call phone numbers
Network communication:
full Internet access
Your personal information:
read sensitive log data
Storage:
modify/delete USB storage contents modify/delete SD card contents
System tools:
disable keylock,
retrieve running applications,
reorder running applications,
modify global system settings,
prevent device from sleeping,
display system-level alerts
Your accounts:
discover known accounts
Hardware controls:
control vibrator
Network communication:
view network state,
view Wi-Fi state
System tools:
automatically start at boot,
expand/collapse status bar,
set preferred applications,
read sync settings
NOW... with all that said, look at the beauty you can create:

How do I use the theme?

I want this one - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11817549&postcount=69
1. go the app menu and open widget locker (will not work from an already locked state )
2. Long press on open space
3. Select "Custom Slider"
4. click the drop down box to select a different slider from those installed or select "get themes" and download them directly.
5. customize the slider before you select "save"
EDIT: http://widgetlocker.teslacoilsw.com/themes-doc/installing-themes/ <-- how to install
Nvm we need 2.0 version lol
Alright, downloaded it... it looks like there is a little bit of a learning curve on this app. I will try reading the guides already out there and see if I can give a readers digest version later.
I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and love it. I got it specifically for keeping the audiogalaxy app on the locker as to have quicker access to pause or stop music. I have also grown fond of the rotary lock as well.
I've been using Widget Locker for months and I've never had a problem. I've just discovered the theming aspect of it so I'm excited to get into that. I'm wanting to theme the rotary and the normal android tabs like the lockscreens in Bionix 1.3, hopefully it turns out well! If someone's already done this, let me know where to find it
Here is my first attempt.....
Not perfect.
I have to say i don't love this keyboard and frankly it is hard to notice the diff between this and the one that was on here before i flashed GingerBlur ROM
I can't believe there's a Smiley face by default where i would prefer to have a Return key (there's not one there??)
am i missing something...what is everyone else using?

Have you tried using the multitouch GB keyboard from the Market aka "Keyboard from Android 2.3"? You can customize the size of the keys and the spacing. I tried to copy the dimensions of my iPhone4 keyboard spacing with it. I believe my settings are, from left to right, 85, 15, 15, 38.
Personally I use Better Keyboard. I couldn't get used to swype for typing words like too / to so I went with a multitouch. Better keyboard has better autocorrect than stock or swiftkey, so that's what I went with. Unfortunately you can't turn off the haptic feedback without getting the pay version, but oh well.

On 'Keyboard from android gingerbread'
if you hold the space bar and pull it up, arrows will appear at the bottom which allow you to move through your text for that one letter you mis-typed.
That's great!
You don't know how to get a return key though do you? good when you need to type an address, etc

By the way the speech function of this keyboard is awesome
Just used it to send this message and it's flawless
I have now used GB keyboard for a few days and realizing that when you write emails the "enter" is present, when you are typing an ""action"(password, search ect.) the enter button changes to a "GO" button and when you SMS it again changes to a "" button.....
This is actually pretty cool but I still miss a hidden "enter" key on the menu?? If anybody reads this with the skills and power it would be great if the "shift" key was changing the smiley to an enter????
Otherwise this is fantastic and I will stick to this keyboard.

Hi All,
First off, I LOVE themer! I've been using Apex Launcher for some time on my HTC OneX (rooted, ARHD 31.3 ROM) and I've often gazed with longing at the home screens that some people have designed using UCCW, knowing that I'll necer have the time (or the artistic flair) to design my own. Now I can!
But there seems to be SO many customization options on Themer, and I'm a little overwhelmed. For instance, I'm using a theme with an RSS feed as a central tile, but I'd love to be able to change that to a 'favourite apps' tile. I'm sure the option is there, but I can't work it out. So, has anyone developed/is working on/knows of a Themer user guide?
I work on a cruise ship and internet access is slow and expensive (£10 for 167 minutes!) so I really don't have time to surf around looking for answers to design questions.
SO, does such a guide exist? If so, please point me in the right direction. If not, is anyone up to the challenge?:fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:

Thanks miles_muso for your kind words! Yes the video vhngu930 provided is a good one, but for your problem I can help here. See the thing is that you'd first have to delete that RSS icon and then hold down on the homescreen > Themer Actions > Favorite Apps. Now you'll have a massive heart (we're working on adding icon packs soon), which you'll be able to edit. If you hold down on the icon > edit > tap the icon, you'll be able to replace it with an icon image. You can maybe try here for icon images which may help, they by Jeppe Foldager and the small whites and darks should help for now: https://www.copy.com/s/DxsaXLatvBGf/Share/Icons
Hope this helps!
