Since the vibrant doesn't have any kind of LED notification, I was wondering if it was possible to use the 4 bottom keys as a substitute. I found an app called NoLED that displays notifications on a black background (and since all galaxy phones have SAMOLED screens it wouldn't use much power), but having one of the 4 bottom icons light up or flash would be really cool.
I remember reading somewhere it was all or nothing As far as turning the bottom lights on...buy don't quote me.
Another thing to note us that black on the screens uses no power.

so i read into this a little more and it seems like TW made a kernel for this (i found the info on their forum). For those of you who are interested, its called BLN (BackLightNotification) and its in some of their kernels (DoW 1.3, 1.4, etc.). Does anyone know if this is available for the vibrant yet?

Yes it is available for the vibrant but the kernel of the rom you are running must support bln...like DoW...
Sent from my XDA app cuz I'm stalking your mom....
also know that kernels with BLN support are all i9000 ports at the moment.
Pros: You get BLN fucntions
Cons: Quick battery drains (8-12hrs off charger at best)
$0.02, id rather check every now and then by turning the screen on than sacrifice 40-50% battery life.

Is it possible to use the touch buttons as an LED notifier for missed calls, email, and SMS? Sure they cant change colors but at least it could blink every X seconds/minutes.
You do Realize this has been asked before.. I sent Jac a thread that has this working on the I9000.. Not sure if he's still looking into it or not though.
its already done for Captivate.

Whats included:
-Correct Screen auto-rotate
-HSUPA support
-MobileAP support (aka wireless tethering)
-Selecting with power button in recovery mode
-External SD card support
-Postboot scripts
-Voodoo lagfix
-Softkey Backlight Notification
I tried and got bricked... so if someone can make this for Vibrant i will be happy.
I use the app noLED. Works pretty well. Found it in the market.

I personally don't care for that app. It's okay idea, but what really needs to get done is samsung to implement the Notifications into the buttons. I've seen what the i9000 has done, it's not too bad. This has been posted many times, you might want to try the search button

Ive been using that but its questionable how it affects battery life and long-term effects on the screen life.
noLED is a decent alternative imo
When I used to noLED I would press the volume buttons and it would give me the volume sound and light up the screen but still on black. So I predicted it would kill my battery quicker.

NoLED is a PITA...it adds another layer of lockscreens/button-touches to get your notifications, thus I didn't care for it much. It also FC'd on me all the time...YMMV.
Someone will most likely get the button led flash to work one day, just be patient.
Flash notify in the market place will suffice for now and it actually works pretty good
surprised this hasn't already been implemented for the vibrant. if it's already done on the captivate isn't it just a matter of time for someone to port the code over?
Reason it hasn't been implemented got the vibrant its because your talking a whole new kernel build... Along with that the current implementations of it, from what I read prior, aren't too fond of battery life and they can't make it blink like a led would do. The buttons backlight just stays on. I don't know if that has changed any time recently but thats what it was like the previous time I looked it up.

hmm I never had a issue with it nor any extra battery drain. Is it the best coolest app nope. But it works for notifications
Samsung fixed this probably purposely overlooked notification problem with galaxy S phones with a whole new galaxy S, the Continuum

That phone is the ugliest excuse for a phone, add a damn led... Its that simple, why decrease the main screen size for a very sub par mini screen that looks like trash.

Yeah that things not looking so hot for me either. Lol
The best alternative IMO is Flash Notify. Been using it for a long time with no issues. Really wanted the soft keys to light up for notifications but I don't find that necessary anymore.

I think this app would be helpful, wondering if it would work on vibrant since we don't have led notification light

Have you tried noled from the market I know that works on the vibrant
Bi-winning has the equivalent loaded on it "BLN" but you have to buy the paid version (2 bucks i think) to get all the features .......
On my Galaxy S and Nexus S the mod I most appreciated was Backlight Notification (BLN) to use the LEDs for missed call/text notifications.
Does anybody know how possible such a mod is for the SGS2? It took a long time to appear on the Nexus S scene - is it likely to be just as tricky for the SGS2?
BLN would be great. Going to use Noled for now I guess.
definately possible since neldar released the version for older sgs gingerbread today..
I started a thread about a bounty for this. I don't think there is much interest. Which is crazy. Not having a notification led really sucks.
I would really like this too, maybe since the phone hasn't been out long it'll take a bit of time to get this on the radar for development. Especially as it still hasn't been released in some countries yet.
I came from an HTC hero, so this hasn't been an issue previously, and it took a bit of searching to find out that BLN had existed for previous galaxy phones.

Excellent! Neldar's BLN is definitely sorely missed on the i9100.

Can someone explain the advantage of this over NoLED?
I too came from a Hero and have been happier with NoLED than a single LED notification. There are already tons of options to setup NoLED however you want. I can't imagine a mod being any better...
No led is useless to me since I dont use a lock screen, hate em. Does the bln version work without one? I read for 20 minutes in the link without figuring that out.
This is the mod I am most looking forward too
so any news about the BLN application for Galaxy S II ?
Yes, same here. Eagerly waiting for BLN to support the I9100. But isn't there any other app in the market? As our phone has in built key light it shouldn't be very hard to make an app I guess.
Regards.

Lets hope its soon! I'm very excited for this mod.
I'm also looking VERY much forward to this mod, since I'm coming from an HTC phone (Hero) where this is standard.
This would make the SGS2 perfect! ATM it's only almost perfect
Would also happily add to the bounty
im also looking forward to this mod. can't believe a notification LED wasnt built in.. must have just forgot?
I will definitely donate for this!!
yes, this and the lock screen delay issue is the only thing holding this wonderful phone back.
Does BLN control Pro v0.11.10 work on SGS II??
Was wondering if I could get a mod similar to this that would allow me to use my soft key lights for notifications.

Perdon me but I have to ask why do you want this implemented?
The SGS does not have a dedicated notification led but the Atrix does have one and works really well. Specially when used with Light Flow app.
Cheers!

I could honestly see why somebody would still want this.
I became too used to leaving my phone on my desk (say for instance I wanted to leave it on the charger) and easily see if I have a message across the room if I became tied up with something else.
IMHO I'm a bigger fan of BLN, than any other notification light that I've ever used on ANY phone.
With that said, no dev is probably gonna waste time porting it over with a default LED already on board...
Does anyone else feel like the ICS OTA was just kind of thrown together and not built very well? To me, nothing seems to be themed consistently and I feel as though ICS/Sense doesn't fit very well together. In some cases, I'll get menus with the black and blue ICS theme and then other times I'll get the Sense white and green menus. Other than having ICS (which is awesome) I don't think HTC put much time into this update. What do you guys think?

Blame verizon all you want for the bad timing of the update, but the performance of ICS is 100% HTC's fault. No doubt about it
Problem is that HTC is mostly green and they want to stay green except Android is turning blue. I guess HTC needs to learn how to theme? Oh and I blame Verizon for everything as well, what a bunch of blowers..
It's kinda sh*tty but it doesn't bother most of us since we're on custom roms that are themed. Source is the only thing I care about.

ICS OTA
I waited for the OTA to drop before I unlocked the bootloader, rooted, and installed custom roms. I don't know why, because the OTA was underwhelming for sure.
It's better than gb for sure

I don't care much for the looks but that is not the problem. It is much slower the gb. The browser does not work well for flash videos. It also does not work when searching pictures with Google. Hancent no longer see's Facebook photos. I have several programs that don't work properly. I wish i could go back to GB!

I was annoyed to find out on a trip this weekend that the navigation voice does not have its own volume and if you play music at the same time, you can barely hear the voice. I had to mute my music when there was a lot of directions coming up.
It is an improvement for me
I am completely stock. I don't like to root until Verizon wont cover the phone any longer. But I was getting close though because of the data drop issues. ICS is not the solution to everything, but it made my phone able to work like I expect. I don't know if I blame HTC, Verizon or the tooth fairy. I know that they all should have been bothered by the number of people running stock that were dealing with not being able to us the internet as a general rule that is a core function of a smart phone, imho.
For those of you who are developing roms, thank you. I will root this phone, probably around Christmas. Thanks for keeping a variety around. :good:
Dated version of sense when 4.0 is the norm for newer HTC phones. Custom roms ftw.

Honestly I am ok with most stuff on it. The only major issue I am having is battery drain. I am hoping after I reset it will be fixed. But it did fix the 4g issues I was having. The browser hasn't been slower for me but I haven't tried videos on it yet. I am annoyed handsent isn't syncing the pics but since the address book is it sounds like a handcent problem. Overall I am happy with it. It's nice I can disable the bloatware and I like how ICS is. I like the sense its not much difference then GB, 4.0 would be nice but at least my phone is working now.

Nice! Glad to hear that you're happy with your phone and the update :good:. If you're having battery issues, try reducing the frequency of data synchs etc. Lower screen brightness for general use etc. Could also try a battery calibration. Good luck!

I kept my sync frequencies, and screen brightness the same so I could compare battery efficiency between GB and ICS. ICS is about 50% worse, in my experience. My extended battery lasts 1 day 9 hours to 0% battery, where it used to last a full 2. It's horrendous. If I reduced sync times and brightness, etc. on GB I would be approaching or exceeding the 3 day mark. Users shouldn't have to do all that just to hit 2 days on ICS. I know some users do not experience these battery issues (my wife and coworker do not), so I have to assume it's an actual defect in my handset.
I agree with OP. Nothing seemed themes consistently at all. I couldn't stand bouncing back and force between ICS and Sense themes, which were entirely different (and arguably clashing).
I spent plenty of time waiting for the OTA, and when it finally came and flashed a new ROM that night.
Screen brightness messes up after using camera (mine stays at full brightness until I lock and unlock again), landscape keyboard is severely ****ed (not so much the keyboard but the displayed content above it where my cursor is), and the themes a little but they don't bother me at all. Anyone else have those problems?

Ive always had that auto brightness problem with the camera even on the droid incredible so its not new to me but i did notice that if you try a new theme some parts of HTC's green theme turn into your color of theme. But not always.
I agree with everything said pretty much accept battery life. Mines still good even on these stock kernals.
Moral of the story... Nexus only from now on lol. The themeing issues and old sense and old version of ICS when we finally get the update is annoying to me. Why didn't they just release the source and not push an outdated update lol.
