Flashing your nandroid - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I started out with 2.1 stock on my vibrant, and used clockwork mod recovery to flash nero v3 w/ voodoo, before doing this I created a backup in rom manager of my entire system while still on 2.1, if I wanted to return to 2.1 I would just disable lagfix and restore backup in rom manager right?

First one question.....Why would u ever want to go back to 2.1?
I usually just skip ROM manager all together and go directly into CWR. Then select Back up and Restore then scroll down to Restore option. Then select what u want to retore. Its pretty self explanatory once u get into CWR.

You will need to flash your 2.1 kernel as well as a nandroid backup doesn't backup the kernel.

Nero V3 w/ Voodoo is super duper silky smooth. I would never think about flashing back to 2.1 nanadroid from it. I forgot about the kernal.

Ya, I don't want to, but eventually, lol, when official 2.2 comes out, I wanna get that, so even if I just rooted, then used rom manager to flash nero, my kernel is now permanently changed? How would I change that back if it wasn't saved in rom managers backup?

why use your backup, why not just odin back to jfd?

Lot of people answering your question with another question.
Sano said it right...you're fine to restore your backup AS LONG AS you also flash a 2.1 kernel separately since nandroid doesn't back up the kernel.

So how do I flash kernels?
Sent from my SGH-T959 running nero v3 in XDA app

Same way you flash a rom with clockwork.

Where do you get a stock firmware
Sent from my SGH-T959 running nero v3 in XDA app

Just flashing nero v3 rom changed my kernel?
Sent from my SGH-T959 running nero v3 in XDA app

Yes cause the kernel are different in 2.1 and 2.2, which Nero is. U have to flash a 2.1 kernel if u want to use that nandroid.
Sent from THE Vibrant......

So would you flash the 2.1 kernel before or after downgrading, also where would I get a stock 2.1 kernel
Sent from my SGH-T959 running nero v3 in XDA app

First get the kernel from the bible put it on your phone . Once you have the cwm flashable kernel just nandroid back then before rebooting flash the kernel .

Thanks ill try that once official 2.2 come out

first time using ODIN need some help

greetings all, my phone setup is in my signature. i am running eugene's latest Franken-TWIZ rom using baseband JI6 and JAC's 1.1 OC/UV kernel . I have set up my phone for use with odin with the proper drivers and plan on flashing back to stock in a month or so before the Froyo OTA.
my question is, can i simply run odin and flash it back to stock using this guide link posted from the bible directory?:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475
i wanna make sure if this method is safe considering my kernel and baseband have been modified using Eugene's latest rom.
I am no expert but I flashed back to stock rom from ji5 which had a different kernel and all went well.
Yes it's safe. You are essentially erasing all data on your phone and returning it to stock so it doesn't really matter what base band, kernel, or rom you are currently using. However, unless you want extra steps in the restore, if you are using voodoo, disable it before you do anything!

nandroid restore now i am stuck at vibrant screen

i need help, i restored my nandroid backup which s the JI6. i am using the fusion 1.1 then after that i reboot now after the restore now i am stuck at the vibrant. please help. i do have the stock kernel. no lagfix.
i can go to download mode and recovery mode. will i now do the odin?
How long did u let it sit on the vibrant screen? It usually takes a while

I can't really follow. Did you not like fusion and want stock instead? Which fusion did you download? Did you follow sombionix's instructions? Also agree about asking how long you waited. What exactly is it that you want?
I like the fusion 1.1 but I would like to go back to stock JI6 first because I will unlock the phone to other carriers. unless I can unlock the phone while I'm rooted and using a custom Rom.
I'm back to fusion by doing a nandroid restore of fusion 1.1, but why does my nandroid backup of the ji6 isn't working. like I said its stuck at the vibrant screen for more than 5 mins.

Do not do a nandroid restore, instead try to install Ji6 over fusion using ODIN or Rom manager.
does unlocking the phone have something to do with the Rom or rooting? cause if not, I wouldn't be going back to JI6
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
You don't need to unlock your phone to root of flash roms. Ive done both w/o unlocking my phone. Now using odin flashing I don't think you need to but I'm not sure

you misunderstood me, i will unlock my phone because i need to. in a few months i will be no longer be with T-mobile that's why i need to unlock the phone.
Try flashing the JI6 modem, then reapplying the nandroid backup, because fusion 1.1 uses the JI2 modem.

i'll try that after i get the codes for unlocking this phone. do you know whether i can unlock the phone even if i am rooted or using a custom rom?
to get the unlock codes, I believe you have to be on stock firmware JFD

but getting an unlock code can be obtain from tmobile. If I do get a code can I use it with custom Rom?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I thought that you cannot get unlock codes for this phone from t mobile yet. Anyway I used the method that you can find in the android dev forums, which I think only works with the stock firmware
By the way did you unbrick your phone?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I had the same issue as you. Stuck on the Vibrant screen after the nandroid backup. Turns out I had the wrong kernel.
You need the Kernel-Vibrant-StockJI6.zip kernel. Apply that kernel after you do your nandroid backup.
Search the forums for it. If you can't find it, I will upload it later.

I used Bionix Final.
I was on stock JI6, went to Bionix Final with stock kernel, tried to nandroid back to my JI6, got stuck on the Vibrant screen. Got the JI6 kernel, and I got back.
I've attached the kernel for you if you need it.

I have had this same issue, when i did a nandroid back up while on stock ji6 then loaded bionix 1.9 on ji6 kernel and tried to reload my nandroid back up it soft bricked my phone. i have never been able to load a stock ji6 nandroid back on a bionix rom with it soft bricking. So i just made a back up when i was on 1.9 with ji6 and then created another back up when i switched to the ji2 modem just to cover all my bases. Side note always make sure your not loading a back up that has programs or mods that will not be compatible with what ever new rom or kernel you will be installing or you will soft brick every time.

[Q] How do you downgrade back to 2.1

I currently have 2.2 Froyo installed on my Vibrant, and I want to get back to 2.1before I install Axura204. I tried installing Axura with OCLF and Rom Manager...but no luck, so I figure I might have better luck installing it if I went back to 2.1. Is it even possible to switch to Axura since I am currently using 2.2?
I've only been using an Android for about a week, so please dummy it down for me. If I have to flash something or use Odin, can you please give me step by step instructions?
Quick unrelated questions:
How do you disable One-Click Lag Fix (I tried using the disable-lagfix file, but I think it is still active)?
What is the difference between a kernel and a rom?
Click the icon in your drawer for OCLF and uninstall for there. Pm me for help with your flashing.
I would say just flash with odin and go from there. Do u known how to use it?

How EXACTLY do you flash back to 2.1? What files do I need to do it, and does it work with my existing firmware?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
To flash to a 2.1 rom, make sure the rom has a 2.1 kernal comes pre flashed. For example, any bionix 2.1 roms can be used.

reverting to stock 2.1 rom

i have my vibrant running obsidian rom with no lagfix. i want to revert it back to stock tmobile 2.1 image. is this possible without using odin? can i just flash a stock image and kernal via recovery?
I was able to do it by flashing the stock kernal and then a nandroid restore.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Yep, once you flash a 2.1 kernel, a nandroid would work. Or flashing any 2.1 rom after that. dont reboot between flashing the kernel and rom or nandroid restore because it wont boot.

You can just flash. Do a data wipe, the op for the rom tells you all the instructions

but best beat u can do is yes wipe with stock and odin, format sd, and reflash with w.e your choice is, my 0.5$
I used rom manager and I just flashed bionix from axura. It is running well and a lot better than I expected

The general consensus is that Bionix V flashes well on top of other roms. Official TeamWhiskey forums say that you do not need to disable voodoo if coming from one of their previous roms, but you may want to disable it if you're coming from Axura or the like just to be safe.
